Penth at least has Berserker to excuse her personality on.
Penth at least has Berserker to excuse her personality on.
That isn't saying much.
We could've had intelligent, ruthless chinese empress who beat out everybody in the imperial court through guile and murder and being better at politicking than anybody else in the imperial court, who'd all spent their entire lives politicking. We got a loli covered by a single ribbon whose idea of solving problems is torture, with a topping of torture.

Now, now, let's be fair - she's also afraid of ghosts. That makes for an interesting and layered personality, right?
My fanfics:
The Gift (F/SN): The last duel between Cú Chulainn and Scáthach.
Passion Acknowledged (F/SN): Shinji X Shirou lemon
He Was a Good King (F/SN): Was Beowulf a good king?
A Fairy Tale of Love and Death (F/SN): A meeting between Scáthach and King Hassan.
Palingenetic Descension (Tsukihime): The origin of the Tohno family's hybrid nature.
Let's be honest, a well written ruthless, intelligent, independent character with a superb handling of politics wouldn't have been the best fit for a cast of human Pokemon who have to admire and devotly follow a token Japanese kid with no political knowledge and the personality of a dead fish.
Exceptions and rules and all that.
She's still ruthless, intelligent and capable. Most of her story arc centers on how she never ceases striving to improve herself, (including her fear of ghosts). Did you really want a second helping of Lancer Alter?
One thing (out of many) that weirds me out about Agartha is that it's entire cast is tied together by themes of effort and perseverance, but that theme never comes up in the actual plot. Seriously, we can count everyone:
- Columbus is a living Karakuri Circus reference, with all about the "never give up even and your (evil) dreams will come true" speeches.
- Zetian is motivated entirely by self-improvement and her idea that evil only exists because people aren't trying hard enough, so she has to (physically) show them they can't do whatever they want.
- Penthesilea is forever pissed at the fact that in her last moments she was acknowledged by a natural trait she put no effort in, instead of the warrior skills she spent her entire life cultivating.
- Fergus wants to train and WILL NOT shut up about it. Ever.
- Scheherazade, the villain, was someone persevered for years until she reached her breaking point. Her motives are completely tied to die she doesn't want to have to persevere again like she did before.
I can't for the life of me understand how all these plotlines happened in isolation, while the main plot decided to talk about Japan's declining birth rate instead of the theme all these characters where clearly built for.
saying Fujimaru doesn't have personality now is too forced.
especially in chapter 4.5 which is main plot.
personality or no personality - would you know it if you saw it?

He doesn't have personality as much as other characters with actual personalities keep telling us he has a personality and pointing out these personality traits that he doesn't really have.
And the whole 'trauma' bullshit is too little too late.
Dullahan makes a valid point re: how do you actually perceive a character's "personality" when by necessity all emotional content they experience, gestures, reactions etc. must be relayed via observer because they are never visible themselves?
so request DW to make Fujimaru into independent character?
is this how much TM has to do to stop 'bland character' rant that mostly came from gaijins?
making a vn mc that actually talks, wow so much effort. nobody must have done that before.
