Magic and science do indeed go in different directions... but towards the same endpoint. And the Moon Cell and to a lesser degree mechanical Gods are both examples of that.

I am not saying its not a change, it is (although I do think that the genre shift had a bigger impact overall). But what changed is the focus rather than the subject.

I don't think I'll ever dislike anything out of this series more than I do Extra tbh
I can't even really put into words what my problem is with it, but I don't enjoy anything to do with the Extraverse. I only bought Extella because liking musous is my secret shame.

Extra gave us only two good things: Tamamo and Nero. And even Nero is debatable, since, different personality aside, she is essentially just a shorter, bustier version of Arturia. In a sense, the mælstrøm of rehashed characters we've been cursed with owes its existence to the fact that Type-Moon was rewarded for taking a beloved character and giving her bigger tits and skimpier clothing.

And yes, before you point it out, I am fully aware of the irony in saying this while sporting a Nero avatar.

I think this isn't exactly fair criticism. The Pantheon encountered in LB5 are not the Greek Gods; they are creatures of alternative mythology. They share foundation to a degree (the war agains Kronus did happen, for example) but ultimately separate existences. Its like getting angry that Ivan the Fourth is a half-mammoth monstrosity.

It's not an alternative history to that extent, though. It'd be one thing if the greek pantheon was somehow different from the very start, but the lostbelts are explicitly our own history that just went in a different direction. So unless the history began with "And then Zeus gave up his golden-shower-transforming, bull-dick-wielding, most-likely-rapey, virgin-banging ways to become a robot", they were mechs from the start, and that's where the weirdness is.

The Berserker wouldn't add anything meaningful to the story.
The proper Archer version would overshadow most of the cast (and quite possibly solo'ed everything).
And Alcides would be just be out of place.

Alcides can go jump off a cliff for all I care about that one, although thinking about it, he'd likely be a good fit for a lostbelt where our final targets are his own gods.

I remember being fascinated by the concepts introduced through Angel Notes and codified through Tsukihime. Extra in it self isn't the worst example of introducing weird comic book sci-fi ideas unless you consider the biggest sin for it to be the one that opened the gates to enable more of this.

clearly the biggest sin is the conception of "TM Cosmology" as singular thing as opposed to Fate, Tsuki, Notes etc having their own independent Cosmology that fits their respective theme better.

LBs are fanfiction, not actual alternate timelines. Though that doesn't matter much with regards to your point.

I don't hate the idea that the Greek Gods became the more "human" figures we know due to losing to Sefar, abandoning their robotic forms and growing closer to humanity.
Something something because they started as inhuman robots it made their shift to their pan-history selves as severe as we see in the myths

I've never played either Extra or CCC, but I'm glad they exist because they led to Last Encore. Plus, Extella is fun! I have yet to play Link, but it seems it's even better, so good.

It is, Link's a pretty dramatic improvement on all gameplay fronts over the first Extella.

Eh, most fronts I'd say. I don't like how spammable the skills are. It makes actual comboing pretty much useless and attack rush is a pretty stark interruption to regular gameplay that I don't appreciate happening so often.

We knew that the myths weren't 100% true from the start. Before Extella and F/GO most people assumed that ancient deities were just natural phenomena which gained sentience from human worship. So Zeus was a lighting which adopted human form and started the whole "virgins, bulls and showers" shtick. The new version is largely the same: just replace "lightning" with "magic mecha controlling thunder" (and even that original body wasn't identical to the Lostbelt version).

If anything making Olympians into beings which predated mankind and were originally independent from it only made them closer to traditional understanding of "gods" in mythology.

I totally agree with you, its not like i wouldn't like see the typical "old gods with long beards and white robe", but i've seen this aproach of the greek gods on so many different works that im pretty much overloaded with it, while all this mecha thing brings a new and fresh air to all this (although mecha it's not exactly something that i like that much)
