The TM writers may - *may* - be basing themselves on Schibli's supposed reconstruction of Pherecydes' description of the wedding between Zeus and Hera, which does compare the world to a tree with its roots in Tartarus, the trunk circled by the ocean, and the branches reaching the sky.

Nope, nothing I can think of. Hesiod's Theogony starts with "in the beginning, there was Chaos", and goes on to Nyx, Erebus, and Gaea (iirc), but no mention of a tree anywhere.
