As the outpost finished construction, Richter stood back and examined their handiwork, small, barren conditions, 3 tents for Rest, a recon tent, and sniping and recon positions.

Turning towards the battlefield, he had a clear, unobstructed view of the city and it's surroundings, yet also remaining clear away from attracting any unwanted attention from the worms or the enemy.

He nodded, satisfactory conditions for the battle, low-key yet livable. He left his men to resume their preparations, as he scanned the battlefield for signs of trouble.

He smiled kindly. "Sure thing, darlin'."

With one hand he pulls a poster from his coat from his coat, and with another he signs his name on it. Another hand pulled a chocolate flower from nowhere with a smooth flourish. He smiled at her. "Here ya go little lady. A rose for a rose and an autograph for your brutha."

"Now, if ya would kindly ... ?" He gestured to the gate.

Daintily picking the flowers with her hand, then grabbing the poster with a vine that crawled up from the ground, Deliah nodded. "Very well. Enjoy your stay, Sir Black Bear." Another vine grows from the ground, and presses a button on the machinery next to the gate. With a loud rumble and a huff of machinery, the multi-ton steel gates slide open, granting access to the city.

    Merry
New York City, Up in the Air (Floating Among the Clouds)
    December 20th, 1:07 PM

Flying wasn’t something most people would consider special in this world. Though there were quite a number of people in the world who could not manage to even hover off the ground a little, it really wasn’t an unusual to see someone flying through the heavens. However, most people who could fly did so with levitation spells – defying the Earth’s pull with anti-gravity magic. Even most angels were no different; though they had wings, those existed to help them soar in power – not in the sky.

Merry was neither like most people nor most angels. She had always wondered why you couldn’t use wings to fly – after all, many of Earth’s original species had evolved them for that purpose. It was then Merry realized, as she drifted among the clouds above New York City, that maybe people simply hadn’t tried. Then again, maybe they had tried before – and the reason they couldn’t tell people how it went wrong was because it had gone horribly, horribly wrong.

“That would be horrible,” Merry muttered to herself, as she imagined the same thing happening to her… not that it was easy to do that. After all, since she didn’t know what would have happened to those people the closest thing she could picture in her head to that mystery was a big question mark appearing over her body.

“Yes, definitely horrible. Punctuation should be in sentences, not on top of people!”

Just to prove her point, she shouted that last sentence – and she was sure that an exclamation point had appeared after the last word. Of course, to be completely sure, she would have to ask someone like Mister Tenebrae if that was the case; he always seemed to know about things like this.

Still, that didn’t change the fact that it might be dangerous to just turn off her levitation magic. Ignoring concepts like the proper place for punctuation for the moment, there was still the ground to consider – which wasn’t soft at all. Then there were the buildings below, which had a tendency to relatively pointy tops. And finally, it just wouldn’t be nice to accidentally hurt someone by landing on them.

In the end, though, Merry decided it was worth the risk to try. After all – life was an adventure!

    “Here goes nothing!”

And so, with a yell of determination, she released her levitation spell… and, predictably, started to fall.

All in all, she was off to a good start.

Location: African Continent, Battle of Jerusalem
    Time: December 20th, Overcount 1989 - 12:25 PM

"I am afraid this is as far as I can take you, sir."

"Good enough, Corporal, good enough. I can take it from here."

The gigantic steel hatch at the end of the transport plane opened, buffeting the entire inside area with winds that would kill a lesser man. The HERCULES-class air transport was initially made for arial insertions. Of Hyperion Tanks, that is. However, due to its high cost and low overall success rate (at least when it came to dropping the large Hyperions), only a handful were ever made.

The HERCULES now served a rather different purpose.

    Airdropping Ether Liners.

Richard calmly strode against the buffeting winds, as if he was taking a rather leisurely stroll, rather then about to join a battle. He calmly walked towards the edge, looked down...

...and stepped off the hypersonic plane, like it was the most easiest thing in the world.

He managed to barely grasp the pilots last words, as his entire vision was filled with blue.

    "Happy hunting, sir."

Today's mission was a rather standard one, compared to his more usual missions. Insertion before the main army, with the express purpose of weakening their defences and sowing confusion amidst the enemy lines. A nice, simplistic mission, without any extrapolations or confusing secondary goals. That did not mean that it would be easy by any stretch of the imagination.

The ground started to appear in his sight, revealing the A-Ray army below. From this height, they all seemed like small, almost unnoticeable, instead of the hulking monstrosities they were. For them, men, this had always been a war of survival. For the A-Rays? It seemed to be nothing but a war for bloodshed and superiority. But who could tell of what lurked inside the minds of the Six Sisters? Maybe for those who could use True Magic, this war had a deeper meaning...

He accelerated midair, heading towards the left flank of the army. The increased movement speed shattered the sound barrier as if it was nothing. And he kept increasing his speed. More, more, more. His body had left behind his mortal shape and had become light, a pure and honest lance of destruction.

The A-Rays could not even notice his descent.

He landed amidst the main army, the powerful shockwave of his landing sent a dozen or so closest A-Rays flying into the air. But he was already in motion, the gleaming crystal longsword - Strike Light manifesting in his arms with a burst of light. His body became nothing more but a directed flash of light, as he cut through his opponents as if they were paper. The twelve airborne A-Rays around him were dead before they hit the ground.

Step. Eighty six meters left of his previous position, he drove his blade through the skull of a cat-like A-Ray. Step. Fourty four meters north of that position, he disembowelled a representative of the #46 subspecies, an officer by the looks of it. Step. Sixteen meters southwards, the 3 A-Rays were blinded by a bright flash of light, and cut through in a second.

The dance of the Bloody Light, Richard Gottlieb Dietrich, Ether Liner 1st Class, continued as flashes of golden light were tinged red by the arcs of blood in the air.

As you marched through the desert, tornadoes of Grain sand rising in the distance, towards the city of Jerusalem, you notice a small elevation in the terrain that got closer at an alarming rate.

    And suddenly--

It was gone. There was nothing but a hole where the arc-like formation had been on before.

It was only after some seconds have passed, that you began to hear the screams of your comrades. Immediately, the sound of autocannon muzzles flaring drowned out the screams of battle.

From the sand, it had risen. A worm-like beast, with a mouth that would mince and dismember all. A thick skin that was slowly being dented by autocannon fire and flashlight fire. It leaped at soldiers, taking them to the underground, of which they would never come back. It would pop back up, knocking a tank over or crushing some more soldiers.

    BEASTPEDIA

Desert Nightmare: The Desert Nightmare is a giant, metallic sandworm. Its ability to dig into the earth makes it a fearsome enemy, that can turn most Liners to shreds just by grazing them with its mouth. One should be really wary of this Beast.

One of Weaver's Night Terrors assaulted the battleships of the Liner soldiers, forearm spikes impaling them or dark energy syphoning out their life force. Its red eyes glowed eerily as it roared.

    Suddenly--

    Luck: Bad
It tumbled forward, as the battleship suddenly buckled. It hissed in pain as a long cut was made on its back, plasma cauterizing the wound, and turned back to see the agressor, fist raised.

As you looked up, you saw a Knight in the standard JORMUNGANDR armor, holding a long, ornate black sword, which crackled with energy and struck terror into anything that looked too long at it. As soon as he had been there, he had dashed off at immense speeds to a battleship different than yours.

Using your enhanced sight, you managed to see as he charged a group of beasts as the sword dissolved, and saw him fight against all of them singlehandedly, breaking all their bones, snapping all their joints, crushing all their functions. Once they were lifeless carcasses, he stopped beating the stuffing out of them and marched to another battleship, this time out of your sight.

And in the distance, the transport ships containing A-Ray reinforcements approached ever-so-closer...

He looked insignificant compared to the other men in the room. They who sat, shouted and laughed were far more noticeable than the brown haired man in the corner clutching the radio in anticipation. They had yet to be called into the battle, the Ether Liners found air-support currently unnecessary, so that man could only stay and listen to the guttural cries as yet more men fell in battle.

He couldn't understand why they were still here. Some of the finest pilots of the generation were here to protect their people, and yet here they were doing nothing. Sitting awaiting orders from the General to take the enemy's fire from the Ether Liners. They were the only ones Trusted enough to do it.

    Trust.

Oh how he hated that word. He Loathed it, Despised it with every fibre of his being. He was "Trusted" by his superiors. “Trusted” by his peers. "Trusted" enough to know some of the many military secrets.

Lies. All of it. Lies. They just didn't want him to leave.

He had seen the truth of the war. The fields filled with flesh and bone. Where great men fell and malicious men rose. When even the sun ran red with blood and all for a piece of land that meant almost nothing to those who owned it.

He had wanted to leave. At the moment of discovery his only wish had been to run. Run and hide and flee and cower. To escape the blood that ran down his arms and up his legs. Never to shoot an innocent child for being in the wrong place. To wash those cold, murderous hands of it all and leave.

He had been refused. The military wouldn't let even one soldier away at such a time of need. Sure they had explained it. “Knowing these secrets puts both you and your family in danger. You need our protection from assassins and kidnappers.” Bastards the lot of them. They knew the buttons they had to push to get the desired result. They knew why he was in the military. Bastards.

He had died at that moment. At least, he had changed so much he called it his death. His sky blue eyes darkened to a mat grey and would have shot himself on the spot were it not for his team.

    His team.

    Oh how he...

The radio crackled to life. A series of bursts of static across the private frequency meant it was time for action. Donning his helmet he raced across the hanger to his best friend. Sliding into the aircraft he greeted her warmly.

    “How's the plane looking Karen?”

The engines starting was the only reply. And with that another Abyss Hunter joined the squadron leader in the sky.

Combat is always slow-paced. You feel as if a day has passed, when it is only has been a minute. Waiting for the enemy is no different. How many meters has he ran? Did he even get a kilometer closer to the Holy Land? Shit, that does not matter. It does not matter at all. And things that do not matter do not even cross his mind.

And then he stops. And he is not the only one. Those who are too damn scared stop running, and put the brakes to their vehicles. Those who are smart stop, cause they anticipate a tragedy. Rambo obviously belongs to the latter.

    "GYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH"

It is not the scream of desperation from one of his comarades what alarms Rambo, but the creature that has just emerged from the ground. A Desert Nightmare as they are called, a fitting name, that is for sure. In a matter of seconds, it returned underground, together with the unlucky soldier that happened to be on the wrong place at the wrong time.

    "Kuh!"

Rambo charges full force to the left, aware that the next point of exit of the beast might be very close to where he was standing just a second ago. And he is correct. The Sand Worm pops out, throwing a vehicle through the air, in Rambo's direction. He instinctively throws himself to the hot sand, his head dodging the 'projectile' by only a few centimeters.

Using the few seconds he has before the next strike of the creature, he approaches the now wreckled car, aiming to help those who are trapped inside. But it is no use. Looking through the vehicle window, those inside are clearly dead. One of them, however, was propelled off from the vehicle, and now rested over the hot sand, in agony. Rambo runs at the top of his lungs towards him, places him on his back and carries him out of the harm's way, just before the worm decides to take the car underground. The impact throws them both to the ground, but Rambo recovers in an instant, placing the fallen soldier on his back again.

    "Lend me your weapon."

There is no response, as the man is practically lost conciousness in the last round. Still, Rambo takes his CALIBURN with his left hand. On his right hand he carries the same weapon, this one belonging to him. Running with two weapons and carrying a wounded man, Rambo tries to get away as far as he can, to get out of the Desert Nightmare's range of attack.

And when the beast decides to come out... John Rambo will be ready.

It is moments later that the Desert Nightmare resurfaces. The sand erupts from the earth as the worm rises only a few meters away from Rambo, Liners running to the sides in fright, firing their CALIBURN's grenades to largely useless effect on the being's thick hide. Its sand-like colour only serves to further inspire the image of terror, clouds of sandy dust and bloody mist in the air. And so, it lets out a loud roar, that shocks the Liner soldiers to the core.

The man blinked. "A Last-Seed? Over here?" The man laughed. "Well, isn't that a rarity!? Last time I checked, you guys like Europe!" Hefting the small crate over his shoulder, the man nodded. "I was just about to move to the city of Madrid, but I guess one hot-dog or two won't hurt." After all, if there were clients willing to pay, then there was no reason to refuse.

"If you want to, we can go to the stand now, and I can tell you how to come back to the store later-- Assuming you don't know where this store actually is." The balding man continued. "No problem with that, right Thomas!?" The man yelled back to the store owner.

"Haaah? Sure, sure, just go and sell your hot-dogs, it'd be a crime not to let them eat those as soon as possible."

The two men laughed with each other, as if some joke had been told.

    Merry
    December 20th, 1:09 PM
New York City, Up in the Air (But not as much as she was before)

Merry was falling. It wasn’t quite like flying – in fact, some might say it was the very opposite of that. However, most people would stumble while they learned to walk, and so this really was nothing more than a minor setback. At least, that’s all it would be, as long as she didn’t hit the ground.

And, even though the ground was approaching rapidly, it was still so very far away.

That didn’t mean she could relax, however. Quite the opposite – she had to focus. So, with a deep breath, she closed her eyes and concentrated on what she needed to do. Thinking back, it would’ve been smarter to plan this out before her sudden descent, but then again Merry had always found her greatest inspirations when she was in danger. Those flashes of insight appearing to her when she needed them the most were no doubt the reason she was alive today.

It would also be the reason she was alive tomorrow.

Memories resurfaced from the days of her youth – of books and stories that spoke of birds and other creatures who would fly through the sky. In all of them that had pictures, they were always shown with their wings spread out – and so Merry decided it was time to spread hers.

Two crimsons wings stretched out – catching the air as Merry fell. Immediately, Merry felt her descent slow down. At the same time, she began to fall at an angle instead of plummeting straight down. When she opened her eyes the city was closer than it had been before – but farther than it would have been had she done nothing at all.

Still, you couldn’t call this flying either. It was simply a controlled descent, nothing more than gliding through the Heavens. If there were a wind strong enough to catch her, she could ascend, but she couldn’t really do it on her own power; not without magic at least.

    Nonetheless, it was a start.

She continued to fall. However, as she fell, she circled around the city – practicing the way to glide with style, or at least some measure of control. When she entered the sky line of the city it was tougher; she had to start dodging a building here and there. For an Angel with her reflexes, though, it was a simple matter to do just that.

“This didn’t turn out horribly horrible,” she said to herself, a pleased smile on her face on how everything was turning out. “In fact, it isn’t horrible at all.”

I guess this takes care of the food situation. I follow Bob to his stand, and buy a special hot dog for me, and an ordinary one for Vezha.

If you're wondering how I can afford anything, well, let's just say that along with my year's worth of soldier's pay, I grabbed some money off of some people who won't be needing it anymore. Like Sarge for instance. I hated the guy, but he was an excellent commander. Always pushed me too hard, but he never expected anything less from me just because I was a Last-Seed. While that made basic training all the more grueling, I could respect him for that. It's a shame he had to go down like that. The guy deserved to at least have a calm death.

    May he rest in peace.

    While I eat hot dogs!

I thank the vendor. "Thanks Bob, it's been a while since I've had a real hot dog." Never, in fact. Dad always used to tell me stories of real food just to spite me, while all I ever got to choose between was Liver flavored protein bars and Lemon flavored protein bars. It wasn't much of a choice, since both tasted exactly the same.

As I'm finished for the moment, I take a look at Vezha. "So, I'm finished here, now it's your turn. Where do you want to go?" I'm confident that I can navigate these streets even though I don't know the layout. I suppose I'm just good at finding things. I should be able to guide her anywhere she needs to go.

    Ragna Asuran Messiah
    Unknown Location

    December 19th

On the bed laid a dark blue haired young man barely out of his teens. He was of lean build with slightly effeminate features that had been the subject of teasing when he was younger, but once he started working out and learning self-defense, only his friends dared to joke about his looks, calling him 'pretty boy' and such.

For awhile, he had a peaceful look on his face as he slept, unaware of what was going on around him. Sleep was one of his few sanctuaries. The bloody war and the dying planet made living through each day a triumph in itself.

Ragna was a corporal in the Liner military of the 731st Infantry. He had been happy to be promoted, not because he felt patriotic duty as a soldier, but because of the slight bump in pay-grade. The orphanage that he grew up in, which was now managed by his sister, Fianna, needed money to keep going, and most of Ragna's paycheck went to keeping it open. That's the only reason he joined the military - it paid well, and Ragna hadn't had very many opportunities growing up as an orphan. He couldn't even dream of going to a university and getting a cushy management job; he simply didn't have the money.

That's right. This was no time to be sleeping. He had to get up. Speaking of which, what was he doing before he went to sleep?

"What happened? Where am I?" Ragna asked as he tried to remember what happened. His head was still a mess. As he looked around, he noticed the high-grade medical equipment and assumed he was in an infirmary. "Was I rescued by the military?"

Activating his anti gravity magecraft, Euler was a little more than disappointed to see it hadn’t been fatally injured. He would’ve preferred to end this quickly, as there were many more enemies to defeat. Still, he was prepared as the freshly wounded beast turned around and instead readied himself for his next attack. Waiting until the last possible second to dodge, he showed no signs of worry on his face, as though the threat of being hit wasn’t even a possibility. A split second before contact, he activated his Knight Arm.

Suddenly, Euler vanished from the beast’s line of sight, avoiding the attack. Instantly reappearing behind, or rather, on top of the beast, Euler swung his blade down as hard as he could. Like a guillotine of death, it was aimed directly at the beast’s skull.

This "Bob" person was mysterious. There was no way he could be a normal person. His hotdogs were far better than any hotdog had any right to be. I can recall birthday dinners back home that were inferior to the one hotdog I got from him. I would like to stay and investigate, but there were more important things to do.

"Much obliged, ma'am. If I were you, I'd eat those chocolate flowers quickly now. They don't last long."

With that, he left her as he entered the steel city that was New York. He cruised along the city streets at a leisurely speed, occasionally taking a puff from his cigar or waving at a passing fan.

The massive skyscrapers blurred into a maze of steel dominoes as he sped along, simply enjoying the scenery and the people. He tapped a few commands into an interface on the bike with one his left hands, while using one of his right hands to turn up the volume on his speakers.

Music began blaring from his bike, loud enough for any around him to hear. He turned on his mic, and activated the loudspeakers for his channel.

"This is Black Bear speaking, coming to ya'll from the beautiful New York city! Man, it's been a loooooong time since I've crashed here."

He swerved around a crowd of passing A-Rays, while flicking his spent cigar into a nearby waste dispenser.

"Let me tell you, after a few months cruising the Land of Steel alone, it feels real good to get back to civilization folks!"

He turned a corner, lighting another cigar and slapping hands with a particularly bold passerby.

"Man, they got ever-y-thang in the cit-Ay! And I love it all! City folk, city food, city streets, city sounds, city sights, city guuurls, city smells- Whew! Well, maybe not the smells!"

He pulled up next to the WTC, putting his hovercycle in park. He turned on the autoplay, while saying, "Well listeners, I've arrived at my destination! For the next two days, love machine will the one hosting the show and meeting all your entertainment needs. Ain't that right love machine?"

A robotic voice answered back, "You got it, B-Man."

Black Bear chortled as he deactivated his mic, stepping off his cycle and heading inside the building.

New York City, Manhattan, One WTC, Medical Wing: Observation
    December 19th, 9:35 PM

"What happened? Where am I?" Ragna asked as he tried to remember what happened. His head was still a mess. As he looked around, he noticed the high-grade medical equipment and assumed he was in an infirmary. "Was I rescued by the military?"
I watched the young Liner on a screen, in a room adjacent to his. Small, young... didn't really seem like the combat type. Interesting indeed. I tapped a button. "Rescued? Yes. By the military? Technically. By the Liners? No, and in all likelihood, that is a good thing for you."

A siren-like voice broke the silence. It was both alluring and dangerous, setting Ragna on his guard as he digested her words.

"Who are you?" asked Ragna. "Ugh..." As he was assaulted by a throbbing headache, his right hand clutched the side of his head. "And what are you talking about?"

A young looking woman, with long straight black hair, watched the city below her with mild interest. Sitting on one of the tallest buildings gave you a great view of almost everything. It was amazing. She simply loved being in high places. Perfect for an Angel she mused. Not that she held a lot in common with most Angels. She flicked on the radio she carried with her.

"This next song is dedicated to a very special woman out there. You know who you are ..." the radio said as music began planning.

She couldn't help but smile. Well, there was one thing for certain, Black Bear had great taste in music. The next time she saw him, she'd have to mention it to him. Good thing he was coming to New York today and soon. In the distance, she could see a human sized shape soaring through the sky, only to begin falling. Even with her impressive eyesight, she couldn't make it who it was. Not that it mattered too much, many beings capable of flight lived in New York.

On a whim, she turned off the radio. Getting a good grip on it, she jumped off of the skyscraper.

Her levitation magic activating immediately. It was time to have some fun! It was time to rock all over New York.

It was what Ariel did best.

It was a truly terrifying dance. The blood that spilt to the air, the troops that were powerless before the might of the Ether Liner, the flashes of light that illuminated the blood rising into the air. But as you dug your blade inside one of the A-Rays, warning bells were set off inside your brain. You reacted quickly, moving to the side as a clawed hand almost impacts with your back. Jumping away, turned to see the offender--

There, unscathed, was one of the A-Rays. His white hair cascaded down his back, tied in a ponytail. His hands gleamed with Grain energy, and he stared at you. "Two hits-" He started. "One of them didn't feel quite right." If you were to judge him by the growls in between the sentences, then surely would be a wolf A-Ray.

As fast as he had spoken--

The Wolf A-Ray was already leaping, heading at supersonic speeds towards you---!

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

A sudden meteor impacted against the wolf-like humanoid- No, it was not a meteor... But a man! As the cloud of dust that had risen into the air receded, you saw the source of the impact.

Clad in armor of lunar and mercurian steel, and wearing a heavy gauntlet that crackled with Eldritch energy, this man of epic power could only be--

"Tch. You missed one, Dietrich-- Not what I'd expect from a 1st Class Knight." The 2nd Seat of the Knights of the Round further slammed his armoured boot down on the limp form in the ground, more blood rising into the air. "Now listen-- Since you're better apt at infiltrating, HQ is giving you this job- And I'm not talking about those ignorants from your HQ-- We're talking about those who know about that power of yours." Nikolaus gestured at the recuperating A-Ray forces. "I'm taking care of these mongrels-- You are to infiltrate into the city's R&D centre, and download the plans for a supposed Great Beast Weaver plans on deploying in this battle." He gestured to the city on the distance- "Now get going." And leaped into the battle, tearing the nearby A-Ray forces into mincemeat.

This time, the blade struck true- Its superheated plasma blade ripped into the Beast's skull, piercing it like knife cuts through butter. The Night Terror let out a short shriek, then thusly fell forward, laying on the battleship, unmoving.

The Liners surrounding the Beast let out a cry of victory, but then suddenly fell quiet. Turning to see why, you froze.

From the bubbling waters, a creature leapt out, at speeds insane- Its body was like that of a shark, but no fish would be reminiscent of an armoured torpedo with spikes all over its surface. It soared through the air above you--

And released a shower of steel nails upon you and the Liner soldiers.

    BEASTPEDIA

Naval Terror: On any operations with Night Terrors, you will see these bastards. They roam through the dead waters like godless sharks of monstruous proportions, and can omni-directionally fire steel nails at great speeds. It is, however, unable to leave water for much too long.

Good questions. Time to meet and greet. I walked out of the observation room into the main ward, hand clasped behind my back, and burning off a small amount of energy to make me seen as a source of light, radiant. First impressions and all. "I am Ramiel to Vrontón, Fifth Seat of the Royal Guard of Her Eminence Weaver, Lord of Manhattan, New York, et cetera. May I ask who you are?"
