Well, dlsite lists around 2k sales, which (comparing with the most popular works on that site, and keeping in mind the game is available from other distributors as well afaik) is actually not that great considering how long it's been in production. But only luwen him/themselves would know the real figures, I guess.

Insisting on the existence of some mangled machine translations in lieu of a proper/official translation just so that "more people can read it" or "people deserve to read it even if they don't know japanese" is honestly akin to trying to justify Coke's fanfiction-in-all-but-name "translation" of Kara no Kyoukai. You might get the general gist of what the story is trying to tell you but you lose out on everything else that went into making the writing what it is. If you wanna read it with an MTL then go ahead, but don't act like it's some sort of de facto justification that more people need to read it and this is the only way. Go show lumenworks that you want an English translation instead if that's your end goal.

The only way you can turn that into a "good translation" is to throw away the machine translation and translate it again properly. No amount of editing of a machine translation will make it a "good translation", no matter how well it reads.

I completely understand where you're coming from but, to use your example, there's no denying that Coke's 'translation' of KnK introduced a lot of people to it (and Type Moon in general) who might otherwise never have gotten into the series at all. A carefully edited machine translation will inevitably be inferior to a proper translation done by a translator, but only being able to transfer 50-60% of the intended meaning is still 60% more than nothing at all.

Yes, that is in essence what I'm saying, and I'm sure what Comun was getting at too. A machine translation might convey the general gist of what's going on, but it can never do what an actual translation does, and no matter how much you edit a machine translation to read well in English, it won't ever be a good translation. The only way you can increase the quality of the translation is by crosschecking it with the original Japanese text, at which point it's no longer a machine translation. Do you see my point?

I never said that, but I stand by my view that wanting to push out a machine translation for lack of an actual translation (either by fans or by lumen themselves) is more hurtful than not. You purport that it's a net gain because more people get to "read it" (again, real liberal use of those words), but like Comun was kinda getting at, it feels like it only accomplishes disrespecting the writing more than any actual net gain. That's not to say that I really care about you reading it with a machine translation or something, it's more the idea of pushing it to be widespread. In fact, in the translation community I feel like the spanish/south american community suffer most from this, because people push out edited machine translations and people just accept them because there is nothing else, which then leads to other people not even bothering with proper translations because what's the point when people's standards are so low.

Lumenworks aren't TYPE-MOON. They're literally based in Canada and at least Maple himself is an (native?) English speaker. They're not nearly as disconnected from a worldwide audience as TM are, and if there was actually widespread actual demand for an English version they've even implied that they'll consider it. Ergo, the chance for a proper translation of this isn't even non-existent, so resorting to a machine translation already is a bad take. That's my stance.

Type moons "who cares" attitude towards english releases is legendary and can hardly be used as reference. Anyone else would be putting out if there was this kind of demand.
