Sorry if I committed a social faux-pas there. As for me still visiting this thread, it's morbid curiosity. The same reason some people can't help staring at car-wrecks...

Having had ample opportunity to observe both the NA and JP playerbases of FGO over the past few years, on 4chan, 2chan, shitaraba, twitter, reddit, and our very own threads, I would say it's a substantial majority of them. If that doesn't make sense it's because your understanding of the adverb 'ironically' is immature. That they enjoy it ironically does not necessitate that they set out 'to play FGO ironically', eyeroll, like some hipster stereotype. It means that an ironic structure obtains in their enjoyment - i.e. that immediate enjoyment persists alongside a more-or-less developed consciousness of the iniquities of FGO, the arbitrary and exploitative nature of the gacha system, etc. If you find Riyo's comics amusing, it's you.

Now your turn. Who are you talking about?

I enjoy the Riyo comics for the pathos of futility and desperation that I project onto real life situations.

Liking something while being aware of its faults doesn't mean your enjoyment is ironic or somehow insincere.

If I said I liked reading Lovecraft but didn't like how racist some of his works were, would you call that reading Lovecraft "ironically"?

I think you're missing the point, not because you're necessarily unintelligent or anything, but because it seems to me like you hate Dullahan. And sometimes that's how it is, so like, whatever, that's fine. But if you're going to dip back in repeatedly even though you know you shouldn't and broadcast that you're going to put him on your block list, just do it already.

    Quit dicking around and commit.

    Kind of like dropping FGO

You're pretty much right. I'm falling prey to ye olde' "someone is wrong on the internet" syndrome.

Nice dodge. Answer the question. We can talk Lovecraft all you want once you've told me who you represent.

I can't give you the kind of answer you want since your premise (that liking GO while acknowledging its problems is somehow "ironic") is wrong from the start.

If what you tout as examples of ironic enjoyment I don't actually consider to be ironic, then how am I supposed to give examples of what you'd consider sincere enjoyment?

I honestly feel like I'm getting closer to understanding Dullahan's position here though.

I imagine the gameplay people like FGO.
Y'know the ones that try to make their wonky 2 star composition work. I guess they play it like a kind of a puzzle game.

firstly, the flaws in lovecraft are of a qualitatively different character - i.e. lovecraft books are flawed in the sense that there are certain aspects of the content that are found disagreeable by certain parties under contemporary circumstances, whereas FGO is flawed in the sense that the overall form is not only exploitative of quirks of human psychology in the same way slot machines are, but also deleterious to the content that exists and to the potential for production of future content within that form.

secondly, 'acknowledging flaws' is meaningless if it doesn't alter the manner of your enjoyment. if all you're going to do is the exact same thing you would have done with no understanding that the work was flawed at all - keep on rolling the gacha, keep on grinding, keep on buying quartz, keep on retweeting the same roll result screens and mirthlessly laughing at the same shitty jokes - then your 'acknowledgement' is utterly vacuous, perfunctory, a formality, an indulgence paid to your conscience so you can keep on doing exactly what you were going to do anyway - and yes, this is 'ironic'

still waiting to hear who these people are you're speaking for

Everything about this thread (including the story, oh especially the story) is too intense for me to be able to safely process without frying something in the head.

Nice work on this story, Dullahan.
