what can that defend against - I know it blocked some of lancers NP, I presume it'd get rekt by say an excali blast -
Why didnt he ready to use this in the initial 1v1 with lancer? I forget which show he used it in - was it fate stay night / or the ubw movie? or the novel, hell its been forever.

Rho Aias - that's the shield - is said to have the defensive power of seven castle walls. Anything with power that can surpass that can break through it. He didn't use it in the first fight wih Lancer because he didn't need to. He used (and will use) it in UBW, when Cu unleashed the Anti-Army Gae Bolg.

Rho Aias (raw anus) is indeed not capable at blocking the full force of Excalibur as seen in HF it merely weakens it.
As to the first Lancer vs Archer fight I would assume Lancer took him by surprise and he didn't have enough time to cast Rho Aias.

He didn't need Rho Aias since Saber interfered and Lancer never got to use Gae Bolg.

A bit late, but I excluded the timestop thing so she can't just stop time, shoot him in the head, and win instantly (if that's how it works, I dunno. Can Servants dodge bullets after they're fired?) And even without the timestop, she still does have superhuman strength/speed with a shitton of guns.
