If it makes it any better the same thing used to be said about novels too (a la Don Quixote who went crazy because his brain dried out from reading too many novels). Those sort of accusations are always directed at the "new media".

Honestly complaints about obnoxious Harry Potter fans have gotten almost as old as said fans themselves at this point. While I get overzealous fans who try to view everything through the lens of their favorite book can be annoying, those aren't representative of the broader fanbase, much less everyone who enjoys novels...
