In anime, this is particularly apparent. Lesbian skinship and even relationships have been around in mainstream shit for awhile, but no gay stuff, at least not at that level. Honestly, the real paradigm shift for me would be a truly gay male shonen lead, no subtext, just text.

I would say it's a lose-lose situation for everyone. Yuri is rarely synonymous with writing in actual wlw characters with all that entails, and might be a disservice too bcs some people who don't go out much start thinking this is what relationships between women are actually like. Otoh men get barely anything.

Not only is finding good yuri hard, but there's a dearth of adult yuri content (meaning not highschool stuff), and more to the point same sex relationships are pretty much confined to the romance genre. I don't necessarily want to read a story *about* queerness as such, but I do want queer characters to be as normal and common an occurrence in all genres as straight characters are. This goes for Western fiction as well

Forgot to say, but I think in Western cartoons and lit, we're actually getting there with regards to queer normalization. As for mainstream anime, yeah we've got a while. I'd say the best I can think of are Cowboy Bebop and JoJo. JoJo in general makes its side characters seem like actual people with actual sex lives, and there is some queer representation where that may or may not be the main point.

Pepe honestly surprised me. He's a great queer character who has a lot going on under the surface, despite his very stereotypical camp mannerisms. He reminds me of Leeron from TTGL, another Queer character who's a bit of a stereotype but is still a valued character despite it.

Not that anyone can take my hc of biromantic asexual Touko away from me with facts and logic, but being a star in an all-girls' school smacks of lesbionics. Plus stuff like estrangement from biological family, attachment to a found family (of other weirdos), existing outside mage society and timeline, non standard 'reproduction' (term used very very broadly), seeming and acting younger than she actually is, cat? That's queer lifestyle baby.

My own rule of thumb is to assume everyone is gay until proven otherwise, when I assume them to be bi instead

I think her first love was a dude? But I may be pulling it out of my ass idk. I assume everyone is bi until stated gay and when I say bi I also mean pan (but I realize not everyone agrees and that's fine).

I do too these days, but the evidence has tipped the scales for me with regards to Touko.
