More broadly: Riordan's writing was never subtle, the only difference is his choice of themes.

To the best of my knowledge we've never had an incidence of someone who can alter their gender AT WILL in real life, so pretty much any pronoun I chose to use would be incorrect. I just threw whatever came to mind at the wall. Pick whatever you feel works best.

EDIT: I suppose genderfluid works (and now that you mention it, was probably what was used in the actual text, I honestly forgot). Genderfluid character, then.

Alex doesn't change her/his gender, only what he/she feels like identifying at the moment. She/he is considered genderfluid.

But... they do? At least the way I read it the implication was that they actually biologically change genders. Given the way it was tied to Loki appearing as both a man and a woman (and a horse, and other things, but that's besides the point) I thought that was the obvious takeaway.

Ok, that's the opposite impression of what I got. I have the books close at hand, but I don't really feel like going back to check if it's ever referenced directly.
In a way, I guess that's pretty much the point, doesn't matter if their plumbing changes or not, only that their mindset does. Which is one way of looking at it, I suppose.

Exactly. The only reason Magnus notes any differences are because once he knows what Alex's gender identity of the moment is, there are subtle changes in how he perceives him/her, and Magnus has also gotten weirdly good at determining her gender identity at the moment.

It might've been a little vague in the novel itself, but I definitely interpreted Alex as literally (physically) shifting from girl to boy. Besides, it strikes me as pretty simple logic. Alex explicitly has shapeshifting powers. What genderfluid person with shapeshifting powers (and no qualms about using them) wouldn't use them to shapeshift into the sex they identify with?

When was that ever mentioned in the story? I only remember Alex being pissed when s/he first came to Valhalla and thought her body was locked into the gender s/he died in, which kind of implies the opposite conclusion.
