You see, GRRM stopped writing because he ran out of ideas not for events following events, which is simply what the show presents you with for the most part. He ran out of ideas for storylines concluding in a satisfactory way that would outweigh how cruel he made the journey, or how cruel he'd yet have to make it. The general direction is there, and the rest of the events until the assumed conclusion would be boring or needlessly edgy to write about, so he didn't, until he needed cash. I'm willing to give the guy this much credit at least.

Judging by that leaked sales pitch he sent to his publisher/editor/whatever, GRRM had a good plan for books 1-3 (which he churned out super fast) and then a few loose ideas to end the story.

But then he fell into the classic trap of starting a land war in Asia adding tons of extra characters and storylines because it seemed a good idea at the time. You'd think a guy who double times as an editor would have the good sense of realizing the hole he was digging himself into.

At this point, old guy should just let the story he started run wild, and if that leads to a nihilistic maelstrom of grimdarkness, just embrace the edge and go for it. Tuck a bittersweet coda at the end of the inevitable massacre, call it a day and enjoy NFL/hearty dinners.

Like he did in the Iron Islands chapters in ADwD, those were pretty fucking hardcore. And judging by the advance TWoW chapters, it gets better/worse.
