Come to think about it, with Romani gone, and since actually Guda never was her Sempai despite of what she says (she was there long before Guda), and Goldorf is a Johnny Come Lately, she is THE Sempai of Chaldea, overall. She just likes to pretend otherwise, but by this point she's the person who has actually spent the longest there by a long long shot.

When is the last time you've seen viewers feel sympathy toward Ikari Shinji? Most deliberately try to ignore his circumstances so they can bitch about how he's a coward or wonder why is he so ungrateful about piloting giant biomechanical robots.
That's just memes that go around the anime community that didn't even watch Eva though. Literally everyone I've talked with, that has watched the show, likes and/or sympathizes with Shinji.
I can't say I've had the same experience, though everyone I've spoken to who saw Eva and threw around that take on Shinji also preferred the Rebuilds, so I can't say they're bucking a trend here.
