That sentence (that whole infodump, really) was created only to hide Archer identity and to be subverterd later, so this whole discussion seems rather foolish.

I'm sure you can come up with a better reason why a lengthy passage of exposition explaining the concepts of heroic spirits, servants, and the holy grail war to the reader might be inserted in the prologue of the first work to feature all these things. And yes, Archer's provenance plays off the expectations that the readers have for his identity based on this passage. An exception does not invalidate the established norm.
Because I like this forum, and I think it's kind of important that translations being propagated are accurate and not skewed by personal opinions.
You can have an opinion and use translations and entries to support it, but translations shouldn't be trimmed and skewed to make you "more right".
I guess the point ultimately is whether Archer is that much of an exception or not.
Anastasia and voyager do however.

This may be an unpopular opinion (which does fit the thread, somewhat ironically!), but I actually like this. If the setting has established that magic was real for all of human history, it only makes sense that philosophers and scientists absolutely would try to study or practice it if they somehow had access to it - as indeed many did in real life, though with rather less spectacular results.
Ah, Nasu and his exceptions.
I've switched camps in that particular war anyway - I used to think the setting rules were somewhat "hard", but before the irresistible force of narrative convenience, they might as well be made of tofu.
General Discussion became a lot less fun after that realization.
