Sadly I haven't looked at Western comics till recently. Getting a quick look at these guys though these don't really take away their existing realism fundamentals as using references is quite normal in the industry. Another great example is Aki who is always skipping out on feet and feet details but well just look at 'im! A weakness here or a reference there never killed anyone but personally its a little harder to defend in Takeuchi's situation.

Takeuchi's art has improved a lot over the years. My main complaint is that he seems to be re-using designs a lot - but I suppose it's conceivable he's doing something like Osamu Tezuka's "star system".

Liefeld is mostly a joke. He's mostly just a huge product of the 90's. Then there's this

As for Land, it's not the tracing so much as it is the constant recycling of tracing. You do something once, then you can write it off as a reference. But here's a 10 year old collection of some of the stuff he's done. Using references is fine, but when the only way you can tell who is who page to page is because of their costume, because their face changes with whatever model he was using at that instant? That's just lazy.

Tak gets a lot of shit from what I see. It's pretty warranted as well... though given that they've been in gacha hell, I think the amount of effort we've seen for a while now is to be expected. I feel like the general opinion is art capped out with MB a long time ago.

I still get emotional whenever he draws Saber so I'm voting Takeuchi good

Old Takeuchi was rough, but that's just his drawing skills IMO. Now, his drawing skills have either improved, or he's got good help, because his general style is now more aesthetically pleasing.

I wish Takeuchi gave his girls more distinct hairstyles. He used to draw those more differently, like Arcueid's hair intake and Ciel's widow's peak, which were great. I'm really digging Wada's take on Nero first time I saw her, which distinguish her from Artoria despite being a Saberface, that Takeuchi ended up adopting when he drew cover art for Fate Song Material. I could see the intake on Red Arcueid in the remake, but not as pronounced since it's a homage to OG.

Only for some of them. Every artist, however, thinks that their old work is mediocre at best.
Because you are too young. Or too stupid. Or both.

Oooooh my hahaha. Didn't know the well of recycled materials ran that deep Mattias. Still, I can forgive it since the less original content is actually quite well rendered over with real anatomical, hair and clothing detail not present in the original. Plus, they're only a tiny fraction among doubtless the dozens if not hundreds of completely unique poses, faces, and backgrounds he uses for the comic pages I imagine he makes every year. It may require diving into the behind the scenes stuff, but whether or not he received the formal training to develop industry standard character turnaround sheets so he didn't have to heavily reference would be worth looking into as well. For Takeuchi working in the more 2D, flat coloured, super deformed anime style -reusing poses and such in an obvious way is far more tacky.

Oh wow thanks for pulling that up Petrikow. Doing some digging on the popular works of the year leading up to that I'm seeing now that lanky kong arms were absolutely part of the meta back then. Between that and his acceptance of it I was a little unfair. I guess the Type-Moon dilemma for me is that unlike Nitro+ or Innocent Grey games no matter how much money and support I pump into it I can't really expect much of that to return in competitive art.

If I may explain to Mellow why people give Land shit, from what I've seen it's mostly that his style can a lot of times be very offputting. To elaborate, Land a lot of the time traces poses and facial expressions from porn. While that in an of itself isn't really an issue, the real problem comes in when there are fight scenes, and the female characters look like they are having orgasms for half of the panels. Also from what I've noticed, Land unfortunately has Takeuchi's problem of reusing poses and making them very obvious, plus his female characters all look the same, save for the different hair colour and clothes.

To be even more clear Land doesn't trace "a tiny fraction among the dozens if not hundreds of completely unique poses, faces, and backgrounds he makes", he traces almost everything he does.

I have to believe anyone comparing fucking Greg Land with Takeuchi hasn't looked at his work for very long.

Personally i think the "art" part of it is only part of my issue

Its more the saber-face part of the art which impacts the writing is more my issue, plus it feels like its being rewarded so to speak

Yes. Every writer too. To be a creative, you must think everything you make is shit at least once

As for Takeuchi, his fingers have been awfuls for years and his works are either bland or actually decent and the only times I've actively hated his art is thinking stuff like Jeanne's idol costume is the ugliest thing on this earth and what he was on when he designed it
