I'm not saying there's no interest, there's just very little when compared to anime or more gameplay-focused games.

I like reading novels. I also like watching anime. I don't really like doing both at the same time, though.

if only there were some wholly distinct medium which combined elements of the two in a unique fashion - a medium capable of the formal narrative complexity of the 'novel', but with 'visual' (and also 'audio') elements which draw it closer to the non-discursive conveyance of mood and affect possible in anime, cinema, theatre, and photography - a medium which is capable like no other of capturing in parallel both the symbolic and imaginary registers of first-person subjectivity

I'd argue cinema can do the same, and with enough immersion, you don't need visual or audio elements in a novel.

And on to the current topic, my problem with VNs is that in combining the word count of a novel with the voice acting and animations of an anime they take exponentially longer to get though than both, and people nowadays tend to be bombarded with demands on their time.

The traditional visual novels, the NVL format that is mostly just narrative with very little or no gameplay/interactive element whatsoever, these are generally the most unpopular because you'd better off reading actual novel or a manga. 80% of those are porn games, so it's as obscure and neckbeardy as it can get. However, if it becomes popular, like FSN, then it would probably get adapted into an anime or something and most interest of that franchise would come from that, so people watch the anime and ignore the VN.

On other hand, more interactive VNs, the ADV format, this kind of VN incorporates some other kind of genres in their gameplay and is often categorized as the genre their gameplay falls on. Arguably, many other game in other genre that incorporate heavy and complex narratives can also be considered as this kind of 'VN'.

Nobody talked crap about Hakuoki until Aksys started localizing it, now Otomate bought almost every Otoge studio out there. You can create demand with hype. Now, whether Nasu knows how hype works is anyone's guess.

Wait, NVL is still a thing? I was talking about ADV style novels where there might be a few minigames (preferably non sprite reliant and built onto the backdrop instead) and the like.

Making it into the Agharest/Conception/Atelier clone like Extra or taking the BB route does not seem like a good idea when most of those stories destroy what little emotional element there is.

For once, I'd like to play a non otoge VN where 3D isn't a thing. Which reminds me I've still got shit to do on that department rn. brb.

At least when it comes to TM VNs, official western releases would give an easier way in to the significant percentage of fans who are vaguely interested in checking them out but find downloading patches and changing locale too high an entry barrier.

Haven't they released a version for mobile too? It's super strange that everything but the original work has an English release. I might actually go back and finally read HF if that happened.

If they're worried about sales they can just add a code for 30 quartz or whatever for FGO and BOOM instant cash.

Even just 3-4 years ago I'd have said the audience wasn't there but TM's seen a big boom in the west recently, so it would definitely sell. Well sell by VN standards; they shouldn't ever expect AAA numbers but I'm sure they're aware of that.

I think it's just too much effort when the returns are uncertain. How many of the casual fans, which are the bulk of the fanbase, are going to care enough to buy it having already watched the anime? How many people are going to read for hours instead of just opening Netflix to watch UBW? How many of the FGO onlies care enough about the story to bother with a 14 year old visual novel?

Empirically speaking there is a not inconsiderable number of casual fans who would read FSN if they could get over the trepidation of how can i get this legally??/where can i download this???/guys i can't install english patch????/which version is the best?????

But sure, a reader reward system works too. Read one route, get some gambling money.
