It sounds to me like you just don't like the starting point for her character arc.

Very true, that is indeed one of the larger problems I have with her. However, I don’t like her after her arc either. Except for her design, everything about her pretty much rubs me the wrong way to different degrees. However, the awful romance and her droning on about chivalry are also to blame.

Your description sounds much, much, much more accurate for Shirou. Do you feel the same way about him?

Shirou starts out as a traumatized kid. He couldn’t help people when they were dying all around him but was saved himself, so to deal with his trauma he develops an obssessive need to help others. I can get that. He ends up with a different mindset depending on the route (IMO: Fate-very bad, UBW-bad, HF-good) and I strongly disagree with his ideals and about their “beauty”, which I why I consider the HF version of Shirou by far the best one. And while he isn’t nearly one of my favourite characters (I am pretty neutral about him as a character overall) of Fate or even just the VN, he does have redeeming characteristics to balance this somewhat out for me. Saber has absolutely nothing about her that I enjoy. The most positive thing I can say about her is that her design is good, before TM ruined this by reusing it for every other important female character. She also has some decent fight scenes, but nothing that the averge Saber couldn’t have done (I mean the quality of the fight scenes, it’s not about her power).

I make fun of Takeuchi and some of his choices a lot, but I do think his and Nasu's friendship is very genuine.

Great post. You strike at the core of the matter without having to spend a million words tearing at 10+ years of TM output to get to it. What is fundamentally necessary isn't revisiting the old stories but recapturing the creative ambition and the need which they were written to satisfy. To this end I think not even a Remake is enough, caught in the trappings of this setting as it is, but expecting an original work seems even more delusional than expecting the Remake to right all wrongs, as if the brand name of Fate is solely at fault. If he has greater ambitions as a writer than turning his teenage scribblings into full-fledged works ("a writer can only write 5 good works in his life") and making video games then it'll show in his work, just as it had set the bar so high in the first place. Until then, the pill that cures the blind belief in Nasu's inherent quality remains the hardest to swallow.

Late as always but, now I feel like we've been set up to "unreasonable expectations" and we still haven't gotten the Remake yet.

And worse, we have only our Nostalgia Glasses to blame. Dang it. The good news is that I too went from fan to bystander (and in three or so years only) and now I am just sticking around for that one work.

Even if it isn't either of what you mentioned, I just hope it's enjoyable.

Get the guy who speaks Wabanese on dial. From what I heard, Corona made them desperate and TM is already neck deep in collab/outsource hell anyways.

Extra could've been great had they started focusing on Earth instesd of the Moon Cell all the time.

We are not getting any major releases from Type Moon because Fate/GO is making them way too much money. There is no Tsukihime 2 until Fate/GO is dead and buried.
