To say we have "no clue" is vastly overstating our ignorance of human behavior in the past. There are countless clues. Not enough to give us a full picture, but enough to at least give us a pretty good idea of what they liked.

I don't wish to downplay the capabilities of contemporary biologists, but even the clues we find, how we signify them, and the idea we make, informed by them, are all entirely liable to cultural context. Any attempt at objectivity is in its essence, subjective.

I should probably be offended by this? I dunno. I believe that our freedom to evolutionary select beyond basic caveman standards, including things that could be considered outright genetic flaws (such as weak eyesight -GIRLS IN GLASSES ARE CUTE- or buck teeth -not my thing but I hear it's all the rage in Far Eastern countries) is a badge of our success as a species to be able to truck along despite this "baggage".

Welp, it's subjective to the effects of erosion, mold, rotting, and any other form of material degradation processes that happen, impossibilitating us from finding any more than there currently are, or will be in the future. There feasibly could be hundreds of artifacts we just don't know about because of the effects of time.

What if I were to tell you that while humans weigh towards platonic forms due to inborn aptitude for visual calculus, symmetry is in fact aesthetically off-putting and truly symmetric faces are uncanny valley kind of ugly? Pretty people have beauty marks, uneven facial musculature, and often sideways facial hair.

That's somewhere in the very basics of art theory, btw.

Ya, absolute symmetry is off-putting for sure. There's minor imperfections in nature, and we expect it.
