I mean, in fairness I did read the first chapter or so of the manga a few months ago. Wasn't much impressed.

Goblin slayer is a true high point in anime because it stars a protagonist who is actually on the spectrum. The plot of Goblin slayer isn't about the adventure or the rape or DOOM or Skyrim or whatever, the plot is about an autistic kid moving into a new town and working as an exterminator, and making friends along the way with people who either help him at his job, or try to convince him there's more to life than doing what he loves.

It's a classic heartwarming tale.

I figured I'm just a sucker of the message there is a beauty to be found in a seemingly hard and futile life.

Yes goblins are terrible irredeemable race who commit any every atrocity, but it's not really story about goblins.

There's something there that I think has been overlooked- they're seen as vermin, and exterminated, and the few survivors of those exterminations themselves escape and grow up wanting to take revenge on the ones who killed their families, and they do the same, prompting more Exterminatus, and so on. They're clearly intelligent enough to set traps, to make tools, to communicate with each other, and it goes on and on.

Maybe at some point gobboes were an actual race, up until they lost a big bad war, or were slaughtered by some kingdom or another. Would they have ever actually had a culture of their own?

Pretty sure the "evil" races of the setting were created explicitly by the gods to be

evil

so they have someone to send their

PC's

adventurers

against.

It's kind of like Warcraft lore where there's all sorts of history and grudges and betrayal in-universe but really it's all just an excuse for the Horde and the Alliance to always be at war so PvP can happen.
