Finished Fate/Requiem 2 last night.
Structurally, the book is awfully similar to its prequel for no good reason. The first chapter tells one of Erice's regular Nightwatch missions, with very questionable relevance to the plot. Then a couple chapters of worldbuilding showing off the city of the week and how the Requiem timeline is different from everything else, and followed by a chapter also focused in developing Erice's relationship with Koharu. All the action is reserved to the third- and second-to-last chapters, with the former being mainly Koharu and Galahad jobbing, and then the last chapter is a 10 page epilogue that prematurely kills Erice's mother figure of the week and call our understanding of our protagonist into question.
In terms of advancing the plot, volume 2 did very, very little. It gave its reasons why its lack of progress, and I can definitely say I'm a big fan of those reasons, as the scene where Erice finally admits she's been actively looking for excuses to postpone her travel to Fuyuki is my favorite scene in /Requiem so far, but neatly tying your plot stalling to your protagonist's insecurities doesn't make it not stalling. I'm not saying I found any of Erice's detours boring, it's just that filling a whole volume with this kind of open and intentional stalling feels a bit dishonest since I paid 1000 yen for this book. If Fate/Requiem was, say, just one unreasonably big book and I paid for everything in one go, I wouldn't have any problem with this.
I could take some about Makki as well, but this review is already sounding way more negative than I wanted it to be, so I'll move on to my favorite things. First of all, Erice's relationship with Voyager finally became something I can care about. Their bickering, their moments of genuine understanding of each other's characters, them finally fighting as duo, all of that was pretty great. Directly attached to that, every single scene of Erice flying is an absolute delight to read. In the sky, Erice feels happy on a level she never feels otherwise and that gets very tangible in the narration. Really sweet breaks from her usual gloomy self.
Another point the book really nailed is the indirect characterization for Chitose. Chitose has barely appeared this volume but the world history exposition and Erice's commentary on her influences to the land inform so much about who she is than any of her actual on-screen appearances. I'm still just as convinced as I was before that she'll be the final boss, but now I'm a lot my confident that she'll be an interesting final boss. As for Anubis & Friends, I'm still not sure if they'll be something of a "disc one final boss" team or if they'll be allies. I'd say it depends on who killed Makki (it didn't seem to be Nzambi, Anubis nor Eingana).
Anyways, I'm looking forward to see the actual trip to Fuyuki hopefully next volume, how the Grail War will play out and who is participating on it. I presume at least Erice & Voyager, Kuchime & Anubis, and Chitose & Lucius to be participants, but leaves at least 4 spots open, if not more considering Voyager Class Voyager proves this Grail War is not sticking to the 7 standard Classes.
