    Sidestory: From the Darkness

DISCLAIMER: Lunar Legend Tsukihime, Fate/Stay Night, and all related characters and concepts are the creation and property of Kinoko Nasu and TYPE-MOON, along with whomever they’ve happened to license them to, such as Geneon, Funimation, A-1 Pictures and Netflix.
    This is a not-for-profit, just-for-fun project.

He burned, though there were no flames.
He burned, though nothing was consumed.
He burned, though no time existed.
    And though he burned—
still, he did not yield . . .

    “Hm,” Zelretch muttered to himself. “How—problematic . . .

He’d been fully aware of the possibility, of course; how could he not be? Even disregarding Kaleidoscope as a factor, there was ample prior evidence of what could happen when a Holy Grail attempted to integrate an entity that wasn’t quite a proper Heroic Spirit, never mind Servant. That was partially what begun this whole enterprise (at least, on his apprentice’s side of things) in the first place!

And with Kaleidoscope as a relevant factor in things, the possibility became even closer to a certainty. After all, in at least one timeline, Darnic Prestone Yggdmillennia had managed, like “Angra Mainyu” before him, to cling to the core of the Greater Grail; and that was before factoring in the particularly ludicrous abilities of the entity called “Count Dracula”—and more specifically, said entity as reimagined by a video game company for a shonen audience . . .

Thankfully, things had not degraded that far: without the focussed influence of Command Spells, to say nothing of a “natural order” rendered malleable by the active presence and influence of several deities, maintaining Count Dracula in that form was not possible, even for the Grail. Certainly, not when the character’s own lore required that a century pass following each defeat (barring outside efforts, at least) before resurrection was even possible.

But though the persona had been discarded, the entity which had donned it was still very much a presence—and possibly even more confusing to the Greater Grail, as the core of it, as Darnic Prestone Yggdmillennia, was (technically, at least) more human than any vampire—be they folkloric, literary, or Dead Apostle.

This left the Wizard Marshal with something of a dilemma. As it existed now, Trifas’ Greater Grail was no more suitable for its intended purpose than Fuyuki’s; with slightly less apocalyptic consequences to its usage, perhaps . . . Probably. Well, maybe—it seemed likely, at least. Logically speaking, while no doubt more dangerous himself than a random scapegoat (being a century-old magus), Darnic was ultimately drawing on Vlad Tepes as his source of power, not the embodiment of all the world’s evils . . .

At worst, Zelretch figured, they’d wind up with a pseudo-Dead Apostle attack; if the Church was forewarned, they could deal with it easily enough (again, probably). It might, might even be amusing to watch, if he did it right . . . But while it was (in theory) a manageable problem, the issue surrounding it was that his apprentice’s little part-time job needed a working Greater Grail to operate as it did—and, unless he felt like creating a time paradox, had always had one, from the Fifth War on.

(Speaking personally, he didn’t have any need for a time paradox at the moment. They were, admittedly, handy for eliminating problems that couldn’t otherwise be killed—even beings that had no concept of “death” were subject to the concept of “never existed to begin with”—but he was just breaking in this apprentice and saw no point to replacing her so soon.)

So, he had to see about getting her a Greater Grail that worked as advertised; no small feat, given the history of the Holy Grail War Ritual in general—no matter which parallel you were talking about. The good news was that this particular facet would push things to help him, since neither Gaia nor Alaya really liked time paradoxes, either. But it did mean he was on a time limit, since the two primordial “consciousnesses” could only pretend to ignore the problem for so long . . .

Essentially, Zelretch decided, there were two real paths to solving the problem. First, he could find some means of purifying the Greater Grail he had, or second, he could follow his apprentice’s example and switch this one out for a working one elsewhere—which, as he’d noted, was kind of hard to come by. Not that purifying the Grail was any easier, mind you; there was a reason they generally defaulted to destroying it, instead.

(Though admittedly, part of that was down to a lack of suitable tools on the part of the destroyers, and part on the nature of the corruption. The latter might be easier, this time, as Darnic wasn’t “Angra Mainyu” or an unreasonable facsimile, but . . .)

Now in theory, the easiest possible solution to this problem was to take it to the appropriate facet of the Kaleidoscope and have Touko Aozaki deal with it; unlike Arcueid’s boytoy, her employee wouldn’t destroy herself just trying to comprehend what she was trying to kill . . . But then again, she probably wouldn’t be able to see what needed killing until Darnic had actually manifested—and the whole point was to avoid that, if possible.

Although, he thought to himself, Ryogi Shiki could at least eliminate that pesky “Rhinegold” curse—but not just yet, I think. After all, it’ll help out by acting to scupper Darnic’s plans, too, so why not let it do its job for a while . . .?

(The curse would eventually have to go, of course—but as long as its effects could be used to his advantage, Zelretch was prepared to let it have its fun, this time.)

He frowned pensively. So, if the easiest way to eliminate Darnic from the equation was out, and he couldn’t simply ignore the problem by virtue of finding an untainted Grail, seeing as they were rare enough to be referred to as “the Holy Grail of Holy Grail Wars,” what options were left?

Idly, Zelretch considered handing the problem off to some iteration of Chaldea; they had dealt with it before, in their own facet (albeit with a slightly different history), and they had a knack for accomplishing not merely the impossible, but the outright ludicrous. Of all the divergent facets, watching them was one of his primary sources of entertainment—it was amazing what could happen when you crammed hundreds of Servants together all at once . . .

Not to mention hysterical. In every possible sense of the word.

. . . But no, he ultimately decided, Chaldea wasn’t feasible; while he had no doubt that they would solve the problem somehow, they’d take at least a year to do it, what with the way they tended to “rerun” things—and his apprentice didn’t have that kind of time.

What else . . .? Zelretch supposed he could always kidnap that Miyu girl of the many surnames—she was a complete and untainted Grail, after all . . . But then, the irony of running an agency that specialised in salvation on the captivity and enslavement of a little girl was probably a bit too ironic for most people to grasp the humour in it.

And there was even more irony to be had in the situation, when he really thought about it: the currently serving Ruler would likely have been able to deal with Darnic, had the Grail not been stolen out from under her nose. Her Divine Authority included Justice, after all—and one of her mythological attributes was “purity.” Who better to cleanse a tainted Holy Grail, after all . . .? Sadly, it was unlikely she would be able to do so now—and bringing the Grail back would only cause problems anyway.

Pity, though—it was a simple solution, and one that would require very little effort on his part. He liked those.

By the time Zelretch had come up with steal borrow Altrouge Brunestud’s dog, and let IT kill Darnic” as an idea, however, the Wizard Marshal was prepared to admit that he was coming up dry so far as inspiration went. Having potentially infinite possibilities and outcomes at one’s fingertips wasn’t nearly so useful as people might think . . .

I need a drink, he finally decided. And maybe some advice, though not necessarily in that order.

Zelretch briefly considered stopping by Arvandor, now that he knew how to reach it, and seeing if he could pick up a bottle of elverquisst; if nothing else, in the event he had to resort to that last plan, the stuff would work wonders at throwing off potential pursuit . . .

But if I do that, I might be tempted to go with that idea just so I can use the stuff, he realised, stifling a sigh of disappointment. The Moon Cell it is, then.

He just hoped the thing’s efforts at cultivating “administrative interfaces” had improved, somewhat—otherwise, that Archimedes prick would never let him live this down . . .

They dwelled somewhere in the shadows of reality, as mysterious in their purpose as in their true nature. Few even suspected that They existed—and fewer still believed it—but those that did referred to Them only obliquely, if at all. Their grasp extended across worlds and planes, even to the depths of space; and Their sight was, perhaps, even more far-reaching.

After all, if the abyss could be said to look back at you, should you stare too deeply into it, then there could be no truer manifestation of that abyss than the Dark Powers.

And They found this “Darnic Prestone Yggdmillennia” to be
    most interesting . . .

The mist rose suddenly, thick as the layers of dirt on a freshly buried coffin and colder than any grave. For all that, however, it moved with a speed that belied the smothering weight of it, grasping hungrily at all in its path. The Wizard Marshal’s acclimatisation to the Kaleidoscope was the only warning he had; as it was, he barely got out of the way in time.

Silently, the mist enveloped—consumed—the Greater Grail, before thinning away to nothing, like a nightmare before sudden wakefulness. The shadows seemed darker, for a moment, in its passing . . .

And then, as though the world had released a suddenly-held breath, all signs that it—or the Grail, for that matter—had ever existed were gone.

    Zelretch stared, for a moment.

    “. . . Damn it—now I’ve really got a mess to fix . . .!”

Writer's Notes: I am sincerely sorry for the brevity and the wait - this has been fighting me for three weeks straight . . .

*Sighs* Hopefully, it at least takes the edge off for you.

...what did I just read? I mean, did you go with the idea of Barovia being a thing, here?

Hmm... this is a bit of a surprise these days.

An archive of my works on the forum that's pretty accurate.

Note that I don't wish to be seen as an idiot any longer. I can't always promise better works than before, but I can sure as hell try, alright?

I was about to PM, I was getting concerned you might be having other issues, given your earlier-mentioned "quota". If you want to use me as a sounding board, my inbox is open. At the same time, hopefully you're not pressuring yourself too much. (I vaguely hate that I have contradictory sentiments here, but burnout is a thing I try to be cognizant of in my line of work)

Intriguing. You've mentioned Ravenloft before, and Godafrid having a taint from the Dark Powers therein, so we're expanding on that and cashing in on the foreshadowing. As an interlude... I'm unsure if this is part of the main story, as a "break in the action" setting up for the next act, or a plot hook for a future story. I assume this is happening directly after Rin gets away with the Grail. The reference to the Grail Works needing an untainted Greater Grail and associated temporal paradoxes is familiar, and this certainly throws a wrench in what was looking like a clean solution. I have to wonder if the Rhinegold curse is also messing with Zelretch's plans, it seems like a potentially subtle thing.

I'm also quite interested in whether Vlad or Darnic (or both, but as a combined entity, or separate ones?) is the focus of the Dark Powers. Obviously Vlad and Strahd have a lot of conceptual overlap, but I think there is a lot of interesting horror to be derived from Darnic's body-hopping and gradual loss of identity. Both are ripe for the sort of ironic torments the Dark Powers seem fond of, though Darnic being suppressed in Vlad's head is already an effective example of that.

Pretty much, Ravenloft just "Yoinked" the entire Greater Grail to somewhere for shits and giggles. Along with Darnic inside it.

Also not sure if you've spotted my Wolfen sidestory at all, but I've been posting a ton in the Mission Dossier until recently.

I'll freely admit, we've been busy. Even my Wolfen sidestory has taken a step back for stresses and the like in life right now, and that tends to be the fun one for me to write. Sorry about that? He still hasn't fixed his hard drive, so we're slower on his side of the chapter lineup, and I'm bogged down with my stuff on my end, too.

Doesn't mean I'm not working on chapters, I just haven't managed to finish them.

Loosely, this is a part of the main story, and a plot hook for the sequel on his side of things.

As for Darnic? Kinda, maybe, sorta? We're not fixed on certain things for the "sequel" yet. Without the bulk of his notes, though, a lot of it has been "banging Kieran's head against a wall", "tossing out ideas and figuring out what might stick" and "Okay, where the hell do we go from HERE?!" moments for him, and us both, as we go over lots of new ideas, rehash old ones, etc.

    On my end of things?

Chapter 123 came out for Arpeggio of Blue Steel, and absolutely wrecked all my plans for the Wolfen sidestory in one fell swoop, leaving me working over several weeks to figure out how to save the plot for that sidestory entirely. I went ahead and worked out a deal for getting myself a Honda Helix scooter, before getting my license or motorcycle endorsement (I had to say goodbye to my savings. I have about 20 bucks left in my bank account now...). I've had to work out emergency paperwork for to save my health insurance since something fucked up involving that. (Which may or may not have been delayed to be sent in until April. Hopefully. If not, I'm going to have issues, and a lot of phone calls to do. The surround sound I had working for 14 years finally started to break down right before Christmas, and that came super late this month, instead of in December, adding more stress to things.

So, here's roughly where things stand on my end. 2 pages for the next Fate Anarchy interlude. 3 pages for the next Fate Anarchy Chapter (I'm working on it. Really. Just the work on how to account for what sort of stuff a Basmu would do to some of Erik's stuff alone, much less the sheer amount of traps, etc. that has been prepared for Erik's army in the Hanging Gardens alone has been hell. 15 pages in for the next Wolfen sidestory chapter (and I'd like to get to one more scene before I release it, damn it...). Roughly 4 pages into the next Saber Alter sidestory chapter. Another epilogue being worked over for Fate Anarchy as well, to account for shifts to the plot, and Kieran's wishes for future stuff to not fuck over the Grail Works as a whole, and make things even harder for them. (What with him creating it, and all...) Which means a lot of vague stuff meant for Erik has solidified a lot as a result.

On top of that, in a couple months, we're going to try me DMing again, and I've been doing a ton of world building, designing, etc. It looked like it might've been starting every other week, starting this Friday... I really wasn't fully prepared, either. So rushing to ensure I had something ready was also eating into my time.

So yeah, life built up a lot. Sorry?
I'm starting to suspect that talking with Kieran influences my rolls on Fate/Grand Order Heavily. How else can you explain me talking with him, then rolling for 30, only to get 3 Archer of Shinjuku on my second ten roll?

I write like Douglas Adams. Proof: http://iwl.me/s/696f37bd

    Curses - thank you, fixed.

I understand, and appreciate your concern. Thank you again (with less self-directed exasperation).

A bit of all three? Since my former hard drive is still unable to be recovered due to lockdown (so I can't even look for somewhere to try to get it done, if it even is possible), I'm rebuilding from nothing - and this seemed like a reasonable place to start.

I've also been trawling TVTropes' Fate/Grand Order pages, which brought up the Apocryphan event's plot - and saw no reason not to use it myself (and worse, no reason it wouldn't happen here), so . . . *Shrugs*

Entirely possible, given how events twist themselves in each Grail War to make an outright victory untenable - and the curse, mythologically, was known to affect Loki, of all beings, so . . . *Shrugs again*

I'm also quite interested in whether Vlad or Darnic (or both, but as a combined entity, or separate ones?) is the focus of the Dark Powers. Obviously Vlad and Strahd have a lot of conceptual overlap,
Ravenloft is noted for having two Vlad Tepes expys, actually; Strahd is the obvious one, but a second Darklord is based upon the historic version - a warlord whose dreams of conquest are stymied by the very nature of the Domains . . .

but I think there is a lot of interesting horror to be derived from Darnic's body-hopping and gradual loss of identity. Both are ripe for the sort of ironic torments the Dark Powers seem fond of, though Darnic being suppressed in Vlad's head is already an effective example of that.
    Oh, yes indeed . . .

Hard drive failure is the sort of thing I didn't know about, and is a very good reason to have slowed down, especially if you've lost notes. That's pretty awful. Other assorted life stress is also totally understandable, it hasn't been a good year for anyone. I'm having trouble getting the connotation of what I'm typing correct, as I said before, but I'm trying to aim at "supportive". Take the time you need. It would be absurdly entitled as an audience member of a fan-work to demand anything of you.

Hard disk recovery is often a messy thing. If you're lucky, it's something like "boot sector is mildly corrupted, everything else is fine", but it's got a lot of variation. If there's no obvious physical damage (i.e. dropped laptop while it was running, "clicking" disk) I'd be optimistic, but I only really have second-hand experience with the process.

I hardly noticed that's where it was from on the initial read, it just fit "this is plausible", which makes sense, given the precedent.

Loosely, his old laptop failed completely, refusing to boot, and the new one has none of his old notes, etc. etc. as a result of it. I'm not sure if he had anything on his portable hard drive, but from his reactions? I'd say "not nearly enough" is the case, unfortunately. We're not sure if it was the hard drive, and shipping it down to me might or might not work to fix things. I've spotted some stuff online that may or may not hook up to what's possibly a good hard drive, or the cause of the old laptop's death.

We're still not sure. And with the Pandemic shutting everything down again... it's going to be a while before we can figure out how to deal with it.

What makes it worse? I'm over in Washington State, and he's closer to the east coast of Canada, which makes things more irritating. The shipping costs alone... Blegh. You get it.

As for the chapter? Yup. It is plausible and thus, liable to work well.

It was a lovely discovery to make at eight o'clock in the morning . . . On the Saturday of Black Friday weekend . . . When I had to be at work for noon.

    Truer words were never written.

If there's no obvious physical damage (i.e. dropped laptop while it was running, "clicking" disk) I'd be optimistic, but I only really have second-hand experience with the process.
And I have zero, so I'm completely lost. But it means that my half of the story, and all related notes (along with all my other fiction) is gone - or at best, inaccessible - so I've having to rebuild from literally nothing.

I hardly noticed that's where it was from on the initial read, it just fit "this is plausible", which makes sense, given the precedent.
I thought it was plausible when I read it, myself - which is why, upon failing to think of a reason it shouldn't happen here . . .

. . . So many hooks to follow, later; closing MHXX's time loop (though again, I'd prefer to "noodle incident" that one), the lost Sword of Atli, Laeticia's cure(s), any number of the snippets from the Dossier thread (Higurashi, KonoSuba, etc.), and now, potentially this - anybody have preferences on which to follow up on?

I'd personally prefer it if you could do two of the hooks. Find that sword, guys, and find a proper antidote for Laeticia.

As it appears you're the only one who has an opinion, I will certainly look in that direction; I'm also working on a couple of different snippets as I wait for RB to get ready for the next portion of this story - so, my apologies, but I can only ask for patience.

Kieran, if it's not so much trouble for you, could you please also follow up on the hooks for the Greater Grail being stolen from the Grail Works? I'd appreciate that as well.

Omake 16: The Bibliophile's Secret (Another Alternate Servant Summoning)

    Sighișoara, Romania
    July 1, 2004

The last etchings made, Frid made a cut, and bleeding into his empty summoning circle, beginning to chant as he did so . . .

Ironically, Frid had a catalyst; he’d picked it up during a layover on his journey from the Orkneys. His pre-awakening reasoning, apparently, had been that it might be useful to the Yggdmillennia, given the scarcity of such things after the widescale distribution of the Heaven’s Feel ritual; and if not, it would be an interesting, if macabre, souvenir. Post-awakening, he’d still intended to hand it over—even if the Servant it would almost certainly summon was no better than Jack the Ripper, the newcomer was (probably) more reliable . . .

And then Fiore had made her request before he could even mention it and rendered the catalyst useless. For one thing, the Assassin slot was probably already filled (unless Zelretch had intervened to take out the unholy lovechild of EMIYA and Kotomine Kirei), and for another, that one wasn’t at all compatible with him.

Some of the other versions, maybe—but I’m not sure any of them would be strong enough to survive this . . . Which means I’m stuck relying on the compatibility system.

Even as he began the incantation, Frid wondered—what sort of Servant was compatible with a Master who intended to betray his comrades in spirit, if not in fact, from the beginning? He had no particular interest in the Grail, himself, and no reason to care whether the Association or the Yggdmillennia wound up with it in the end; at least, not insofar as it was kept out of the hands of Kotomine Shirou or “Count Darnicula . . .”

Shirou—the real Shirou, to his mind—would’ve approved of that, he thought.

His only concern in this affair beyond that was regarding Fiore’s wellbeing, and to a slightly lesser extent, Caules’; only “slightly,” because he did like the kid, and Fiore’s was, obviously, invested in it.

So who will it be? Normally, I'd expect Hans, but under these circumstances . . .? Medea was the betrayed, not the betrayer . . . Lancelot, maybe—or, since Mordred is a thing here, maybe her? It’d be nice to try and get her past her gender hang-up . . .

“. . . From the binding circle,” he finished in a thundering tone, “thou, Guardian of the Scales!”

Blazing light filled his vision, but his Mystic Eyes “saw” through the blindness, which revealed—

A Caucasian girl, perhaps a teenager, with reddish-gold (titian, his Mystic Eyes insisted) hair, and very blue eyes (but had that been a reflection of pink, just now?) She was a head shorter than he was, with facial features that reminded him of Fiore’s, but weren’t by any means identical; the closest way he could think of to describe it with any accuracy was “like seeing another female drawn by the same artist-slash-character designer.”

That was strange, to put it mildly—normally, in anime worlds (the Works’ home world being his prime experience), that wasn’t visible in a “real life” context. Rin and Sakura, for example, did look alike; but that was because they were sisters, whereas neither of them resembled Saber or, say, Arcueid (which their character drawings very much did)—but you had to be in an outside perspective to see it. That this girl so closely resembled Fiore as she did meant . . . What?

Am I dealing with Counter Guardian FORVEDGE, or something?

“It’s nice to meet you,” the Servant in question said, in English that Frid pegged as having an American accent—and tentatively a “Midwestern” one, as he understood the term. “I’m identified as Servant Alter Ego. And while I’m afraid succeeding in this War might be a tricky puzzle to solve, as I’m not much good in a fight, I’ve never met a mystery that I couldn’t unravel.”

As Frid remained silent following her introduction, she tentatively added, “ . . . That is, if you’re willing to be my Master . . .?”

The ersatz magus was startled at the sudden question, realising that he’d been spacing out; but really, how could he not? After all, she was a Servant that he didn’t recognise—AT ALL . . .!

(And yet, despite that, there was the nagging feeling in the back of his mind that he should recognise her, just the same; was it just desperation on his part? Was he actually dealing with Counter Guardian FORVEDGE . . .?).

No—because if I was, I have to think that upon seeing me again, Fiore would either sweep me up and kiss me (just because she could actually walk over and pick me up, now), or kill me on the spot, because she knows the truth . . .

Aloud, however, he decided to answer honestly—at least in regards to his feelings.

“Of all the Heroic Spirits within the Throne, you were willing to answer, when I called for help,” Frid answered her gratefully. “How could I not be?”

He could see the bonds of prana forming between them (abruptly realising that his Mystic Eyes were still on as a result and shutting them off) and flinched as an entirely new form of vision opened up as the contract locked into place. “Master Vision” was all he’d ever heard it called, and never really described—which made sense, as it was more of a game mechanic for the original visual novel, not actually seen in any other Fate incarnation.

    [Class: Alter Ego]
    [True Name: ????]
    [Strength: E]
    [Agility: D]
    [Endurance: E]
    [Mana: E]
    [Luck: EX]
    [Noble Phantasm: EX]
[Personal Skills: Inherent Insight A, Librarian of Knowledge C, Morph (Infiltration) B, Riding C, ????]
    [Noble Phantasm: ????]

Frid’s first thoughts, on looking at her Parameters, was that she really wasn’t a fighter; given that (assuming that F/GO’s rules applied, as her class was native to it) she was already at a disadvantage against the three Knight Classes, that was bad. He’d have to try and get to Kairi Sisigou, assuming that this facet’s Red roster was otherwise unchanged aside from him; having Mordred to cover things would be essential to their surv—

He blinked. Wait, why would a Skill be unidentified . . .?

Not knowing Alter Ego’s Noble Phantasm or True Name made a certain amount of sense; the Servants tended to need to explain them to their Masters (and the audience), in his experience. And that was without Skills that blocked them naturally, like Mordred’s or Lancelot’s—or Invisible Air, come to that. But a Skill . . .?

It would have to be one that would identify her
instantly, and is blocked to protect her—but wouldn’t I see the blocking attribute, regardless . . .? But what else could cause an effect like that . . . Maybe it’s a Skill she’d normally have, but is sealed by her being summoned into this Class . . .? That might make sense, but I’ve never heard of it happening before . . .

The only other alternative Frid could see would be its being a Skill he was unaware of; but why would that hide it from him?

No wonder Alter Ego claimed to enjoy mysteries, given how much of one she was herself . . .

That niggling sensation in the back of his mind suddenly became a full-blown tingle—like the mental equivalent of going from a faint itching to an all-out nerve strike. He’d found a connection, even if he didn’t quite make it outright—

Ah—it was her hair, of course. While images of the girl in question could vary her depiction by a considerable margin, he’d seen only ever seen “titian-haired” used to describe one person—in one place. Combine that with the thought he’d just had to spark all this, and her identity, while not obvious, could certainly be extrapolated . . .

Frid held out his hand carefully, saying in a casual tone, “I look forward to working with you, Miss Drew . . .” Dropping to a whisper, he added carefully, “Or would you prefer ‘Nursery Rhyme?’

His use of the first name prompted her eyebrows to rise in surprise—but his use of the second escalated her expression to bug-eyed shock. For a brief instant, the redhaired, blue-eyed teen displayed white hair and pink eyes, before her initial appearance reasserted itself—but not before the final Skill in her portfolio was revealed.

    [Self-Modification: EX]

“ . . . No wonder I was summoned like this,” the Servant murmured. “But if you’re that good at solving mysteries, then I feel kind of redundant . . .

    Picture link fix, here.

Clever solution for including more obviously-fictional contemporary characters. Holmes is about as recent a fictional character as we get as a Heroic Spirit, and Nancy is much more contemporary and relatively-obscure, so you need something. I'm not entirely sure what she does that's different from Holmes, so the EX-rank could just be the equivalent to Elementary My Dear, but I haven't actually read enough Nancy Drew to know if there's anything else that should come to mind.

I feel like this particular choice of partner would make Godafrid... even more of a mastermind than he currently is, though spotting some problems earlier in the timeline might have been more impactful than being able to fight through them. I do appreciate XX's contrasting role of being more like "the muscle" of the pair in normal continuity, though.

Fixed, thank you - and apologies, I keep forgetting it does that because I don't link pictures often enough . . .

But Ms. McMann is the first Nancy Drew I've seen who actually looks like Nancy, going by the way she was described when I read the books - so I couldn't resist.

    I thought so.

. . . It wouldn't work for just any character, of course, but as Nursery Rhyme is both a book and "the Heroine of Children," the lead character of a girls-oriented mystery series (particularly one in its 91st year!) made sense to me. I imagine Dorothy Gale, Anne of Green Gables, or maybe even Harry Potter to be possible under that little loophole.

Not especially - I am toying with the idea of a magnifying glass, as the series' title had a silhouette of Nancy holding one for years - but as it stands now, the "EX" actually represents Nursery Rhyme's Noble Phantasm(s). The time-looping ability of The Queen's Glass Game actually could be reinterpreted under Miss Drew's auspices, as her debut mystery was "The Secret of the Old Clock" (which she did get to keep, at the end of it) . . .

That was the idea - along with the concept that any literary character (particularly one like Nancy) could be considered an Alter Ego of Nursery Rhyme, of course.

. . . Truth be told, I did consider "Rider," as Nancy's first on-page appearance has her driving "a brand-new blue coupe," but I thought it might be cribbing from Rider Carmilla's style a bit too much. As to why Nancy? Well, as noted, she's over 90 as of this year (and the Hardy Boys are 94), she's been adapted to film, television, board and video games worldwide (and as I've said, I like the look of the current TV one), and Nancy is arguably one of my first crushes (since I was about 8).

I might've started with the Hardy Boys (which I did and do enjoy), but growing up, her books were always easier to find.
