"U-um, Miss Lailah." She began, clearly hesitant. "Could we... have a moment of your time...?"
    "...Yes?"

Still standing with crossed arms, the woman tilts her head slightly to the side, questioning gaze landing on your figure as you obediently struggle into your newfound poncho.

[...How terrifying. That look of utmost disappointment... Are all angels like this nowadays?]

Even Preciel seems somewhat flabbergasted by the intensity of the mother energy radiating out from the dark-winged angel, enough so that you can feel her ruminations on the matter of the White Shroud come to a screeching, absolute sort of halt. Of course it's not too surprising to you, Lailah had always been like this; according to the older members of the church she just hadn't been aware of it at the start, questioning what people meant by 'mom energy' when it was brought up to her, but once it had been explained, well...

    She had embraced it.

    To somewhat terrifying effect...

Then again, you were sort of weak to these types, weren't you?

Aurora shakes it off a bit easier then you, just chuckling and rubbing at the back of her head in a nervous sort of tic, actively choosing not to fight her on these poncho issues. Best to just submit to things like this when they happen and you're in the wrong; but when it comes to Daniel, who seems to be the only one not withering a little under her gaze...

"Forgive me, Miss Night." He tilts his hat at her in a respectful, gentlemanly sort of way. "It's my fault for not bringing more then a single umbrella. I'm afraid this storm of ours caught me somewhat off guard, but I will endeavor to be better prepared for situations like this in the future."

    A bow.

Lailah frowns slightly, but ultimately nods at him, accepting the words.

---As always, it seems Daniel knows exactly what to say to get along with people... Or well, in this case, a particularly powerful angel-!

"As for our business with you." He stands again, his usual perfect smile returning to his face. "We are... Putting together something of a hunting party for a Baku. And as I understood it, the angels keep tabs on the current configuration of the Dark Realm, correct?"

"We do." Answers Lailah after a moment's silence. "But why a Baku?"

    She has a Mother-like 'I-can-sense-brewing-trouble' sense too-?!

Daniel answers immediately, unphased by the slightly narrowed eyes.

"Miss Cosmos here has been having some... Unpleasant dreams lately." He nods to you. "After talking about it awhile, we decided to consult a Baku on the matter. Dream Demons are often wise to these sorts of things, and in the worst case, such a being could simply devour the nightmare, no?"

    He chuckles.

"It's something of a personal matter, hearing myself say it aloud... But I figure it's a worthy enough quest, something to have everyone stretch their legs a little in this month's lull in activity?"

    His smile widens.

Lailah nods again -slower this time- before turning her gaze back to you.

    "...Is it the nightmares again?"

    She asks after a moment.

"The one about the stars blinking out in the sky?"

    ---So she knew huh?

    Perhaps that made sense...

Mom types pick up on those sorts of rumors...

    "..."

The look of cat-like awareness soon gives way to something more like a general haze, a cloudy look in the eye that reemerges the moment the shot of adrenaline that must have been pumping through her veins loses it's effect, the brief high giving way to an unrelenting sort of crash...

    "..."

    Still...

She doesn't answer you right away.

Where Shuichi had smiled approvingly before sitting at the table, as if he too thought that this approach might be the right one, the girl -Myra- still seems to be a little anxious about all of this... She's giving you a scrutinizing gaze -at least as much of one as her current haze-like state allows- like a cat that was trying to decide whether or not to let a human pet it, before slowly...

    "The fairy didn't... Hurt me...?"

    Slowly...

Making her way to the chair, and...

Pulling it slightly away from the table before sitting down in it.

    "Do..."

She starts softly, after a moment of awkward silence,

"Does this place... Still have the giant cinnamon buns?"

An innocent question, unfitting for the merciless White Shroud that she was mere hours before; no, sitting their with her hands in her lap (albeit with her sword right next to her) that girl...

"I haven't had one of those since... I was a kid."

    Seems almost...

    Shy?

What was it that caused this illusory memory, a broken piece of a long forgotten past?

Had it been the vision that Ludwig glimpsed from his older sister's mind, of that night filled with monsters, that morning without heroes, of a crimson spear that pierced him once before? Pieces of a fractured past falling in place now through a single nudge?

Was it the infection spreading through body and mind, threatening even to swallow whole a defiant soul in its wake? That familiar sensation of a pure malice tearing through any resistances along the way to the heart. A curse meant for consumption, much like that infernal mud wherein the Karlfeldt kids lay. A crucible to burn away the 'impure'.

Or could it be that it's another effect this place, this shared dream-world, bringing forth tales of a shared past, a shared suffering?

Whatever the case, one thing is for certain.

Befitting this memory, the body that stands in this desolate wasteland is that of a mere child rather than the adolescent Tamer. A frame significantly smaller, weaker and fragile, yet with that same rebellious look burning in his eyes.

The smell of smoke, fire and brimstone surrounds the boy, a nigh tangible lingering heat pressing down upon him from all around. It'd be easy to give in and falter to this landscape, to the battle raging forth within. Fall prey to the curse that seeks to melt away all that one is.

And yet, despite such a state the child sets one step forward. Hands clenching to form fists, assuming a fighting stance.

Of course, such an action is fruitless. Such is the difference in stature and power between the two. Had the man standing before Ludwig desired his demise, he would've let him burn away in this rotting sea of flames. If this man so pleased, he could end any hostile exchange before the boy could throw a single punch.

All the same, the tiny frame clings on to life for whatever few more seconds it can spare.

Yes, from the very start there had been an unyielding will that resided within. One unwilling to falter, even with his heart pierced and his veins on fire.

Perhaps that was why he was spared in the first place? Or was it something else that guided the dark ESPer's hand?

    Impossible to say.

Whatever the case, the action may be fruitless, but not meaningless.

    Never meaningless.

    ---That's right.

It had been something like this, hadn't it?

The familiar town had been bathed in unnatural flames, the remnants of a battle that had taken all night to ultimately resolve itself. It had been something like a nightmare, unnatural shapes lingering in the windows, whispers of the dead floating eerily by on the night's poison winds. Lara had hid everyone inside of the orphanage. She had locked the doors and refused to let anyone out, telling them that things were just a nightmare, to close your eyes cover your ears and just ignore it, let it pass around you rather then through you.

---You had tried to do so.

But the whispers had gone beyond the physical world; the creeping dread that had run down your spine had done so in spite of all attempts to drown it out. Sitting with your eyes closed and ears covered hadn't helped; there had been sounds like something incomprehensibly large roaring on the outside, explosions and screams...

Some in fear, some in defiance.

---The town had been a battlefield last night, that was something even your childish mind could put together in the end. You weren't sure what kind of battle it was, but you could feel that it had been important, world-shattering, so large in scale that what was happening now, these unnatural flames?

    Aftershocks.

A certain group of heroes had put a stop to the source of the destruction at the cost of their lives.

But what was left was still rampaging about, sparks of an absolute darkness that was enough to set fire to a town even after everything should be over...

You aren't sure how many buildings actually caught flame; but the sky is dark, it's supposed to be morning, but the sky is black and cloudy with smoke. It hurts to breathe, it had hurt to breathe from the moment that Lara had burst into the room to drag everyone out, when the fire had taken the shape of grinning specters, the remnants of a dying malice that sought to take as many people with them as they could before they ran out of power, a spiteful wish, meant only to spit on the sacrifices of heroes that had done their best but had ultimately been unable to save everyone.

---It seems you hadn't quite made it out of the building; or at least, it seems that sentient flame had caught up to you.

You're not sure how you're alive.

A human would certainly have succumbed to this phenomena, but what you do know is...

This man had pulled you from the flames.

He had pulled the others too, although they lay collapsed on the ground...

    Still-!

    ---Something about him is wrong.

Perhaps its just the feeling that no one good should be doing so well inside of this mess? His clothes are undamaged, his body unharmed, and those eyes...

You weren't sure what was going on inside of them, but you wouldn't call it generosity.

Those aren't the eyes of a proper doctor.

You had raised your fists as best as you knew how, will unbroken even in a world that was actively falling apart, where you should have been collateral damage in the end, but...

    "...That's right boy."

The man had chuckled, failing to see a child as a threat.

    But that's only natural.

    You're not a threat.

"Cling to your life with everything you have, as is your right." He had stated simply. "You were one of the few with a strong enough will to do so."

He had smiled, seeming almost impressed with your actions?

His eyes drift, finding the others along the ground, before-

"...Them too, of course. But that's all."

    -drifting back to you.

"The fools did their best, and they won in the end... But the curse still took the rest of this town."

He doesn't sound particularly bothered by this...

A determined stare remained aimed at the man, not letting him out of sight out of desperation. Something was wrong with this man, his words, stance and unfettered appearance only further fueled a growing sense of danger.

This was the savior of the orphanage, and yet his reasons for doing so didn't come across quite so altruistic. He didn't act out of a sense of righting wrongs, or justice, or goodness.

Clad in a doctor's robes, the appearance only served to make him look more sinister. Like a mad scientist only too eager to try out inhumane experiments.

But perhaps such judgements are too harsh, colored by the death and despair that is heavy in the air.

Still... to call the heroes that fought throughout the night, that laid down their lives to quell nightmares beyond understanding... mere 'fools'. It doesn't feel right, no, it doesn't feel right at all.

Yet, the man's behavior didn't change the situation itself. In the end, what had remained of the orphanage, no, the entire town, was only dust, ash, echoes and roaring flame. Destruction, death, and the faint few souls gathered here.

If it was salvation that was desired... he was their first and final hope.

    So...

    "...Thank you. For saving us."

...was it worth lowering one's guard, if it meant saving the others?

If this man had the means to shelter and feed the others, or the ability to vacate them from this disaster zone, then it'd be wise to ask for his assistance, shouldn't it?

    "Mister..."

Fists remain clenched. A singular will to persist aimed at the stranger.

    "...Are you strong?"

---It is, of course, a sensible conclusion to reach in the end.

This man is clearly an outlier in the night. Where those that have survived have seemingly all done so by the skin of their teeth, he maintains an air of health that makes it hard to believe that he had lived through the same night as everyone else. If that is the case, then there is only a single possibility that comes to mind...

    Namely.

    He is strong.

In order to survive as he had, this man must be strong; after all, as he said....

The weak had been swallowed up already.

    "..."

    His answer is not immediate.

Looking at you silently for a moment, that glint of a mad scientist never quite leaving his eyes completely, the man had ultimately raised a hand to the sky and snapped his fingers. He acts as if the act itself is the answer, something that confuses you at first, until...

Water begins to fall from the heavens.

It's slow at first, a handful of droplets, a light drizzle...

---And then the clouds open up.

    Or perhaps...

    Just perhaps...

    The World starts to cry.

It cries tears of endless regret, for a day that never should have happened; it's a sorrowful rain that finally starts to put out the flames.

A punctuation mark at the end of a tragedy.

"...Stronger then most. About on par with one of the fools."

He had ultimately said that without a smile, a stoic face in the heart of a storm he had seemingly egged on with his willpower alone.

"But I see you understand, I thought you might."

He can be heard clearly, in spite of the thunderous downpour.

Because it does not touch any of you.

It falls around you, a mark of unnatural power.

"Might controls everything. And without strength you cannot protect anything."

    He looks to the distance.

To the park where the heroes on the television set had ultimately disappeared...

"Those that went to slay the beast had power enough to protect the world, but not themselves or this town. They had power, but they didn't have enough of it. Their lives were used to make up the difference."

He stresses the word out, as if seeking to impart this wisdom to the next generation, and indeed...

    "It is... A tragedy."

Perhaps that is part of it?

The way he had said that... Made it seem like something important to him...

    A core philosophy.

    That which dictates his life.

    His gaze returns to you.

"Strength is an endless journey. You become weak when you stop seeking it out."

---He had never responded to your thanks, but-

He continues to stare at you.

    Thinking.

Ah, was that why... the reason Lara wishes this man dead?

A sin born from my own desire?

A choice that would set us all on a path of pain.

    With no way back.

    Ludwig Karlfeldt
    That Day
    ???

Rain washes away the fires, replacing the smell and dissipating the latent heat, but nothing more. It cannot restore what was lost, it cannot take away the pain, nor can it make right all that had transpired.

A town in ruins, marred by a curse of hatred for all that lived within.

The rain doesn't touch the children nor the man that brought forth this downpour, the lone survivors of this disaster. Whether it was done out of showing of controlled strength, or as if it symbolize that for those that remained there would be no relief. No rains to wash away the pain. These scars and burns will etch their way into their very souls, igniting a fire within that will never be extinguished, a hallmark of where their story began.

    From the tragedy of another.

Still, steadfast eyes keep that man in their sight. As if the moment the boy look away, or diverts his attention, something will happen.

---A price to pay, though not for carelessness.

"Then... how did you and the others... how did you manage to attain, this strength?"

As rains falls all around, the boy once more speaks up. He remains standing on his own two feet, fists at the ready, his heart is beginning to beat ever so slightly faster.

Perhaps in anticipation for what is about to transpire, or perhaps merely to keep the boy going for just a while longer.

He was the only one standing now, with Lara and the others down for the count, victims of relentless smoke and flame, suffered in an attempt to rescue...

Well, suffice to say it was Ludwig's turn to protect them.

And it is precisely so that this man's words hit that much harder, striking deep within.

To protect others... power is a necessity. An ever-ongoing pursuit of it was needed to ensure the safety of others, or it would all be for naught.

This world is a cruel one, its opening act a tragic end for the heroes that gave their life to defend everyone... failing the one place they must have held dear the most.

And right now, all the boy can muster is to remain standing. How could he ever protect anyone if that's the extent of his ability?

    No, this would not do.

    And so...

"How do I become even stronger than them? I... We relied on Lara, believed in her words as best we could but... if nothing changes she might..."

Words spill out of a frail frame, paving the road to hell with a purity of purpose that will devour them all.

"If I could be strong like you, then none of this would have happened."

---Instead, it is a price paid for caring too much.

Ludwig looks away from the man, his eyes trailing off to his fellow brothers and sisters.

    "The power to protect..."

The power to safeguard the weak.

    The power to vanquish evil.

The power to bring forth great change.

The power to do true good.

The power to champion the wishes of those behind one's back.

The power to overcome all obstacles in one's path.

The power to break through it all.

---No compromise would be too great.

    You look away.

The man grins, but at the time you do not realize the meaning behind such an expression. After all, in that mind's eye, you were an embodiment of something in which he placed absolute faith; a life form that should have been consumed by the curse but was not, a miracle that existed in defiance of the stacked deck that had ended everyone else.

    Might controls everything.

If you had survived, then some sort of power must have allowed you to do so.

This didn't mean that you weren't weak... No, you had been very weak that day, but...

You had the potential to be strong.

The drive to do so, the reason for that drive was irrelevant to him. But of course you could not have known that then; he was but a stranger to you. You were a child that had wandered into the closing scenes of another story's tragedy, unaware of how twisted things had to be to reach this point.

The people of this land should not have lost, yet for some reason they had...

You should not have survived if they had fallen, yet for some reason you did...

    Regardless...

Pushing all other thoughts from mind, you look away, pondering the nature of a philosophy that had been presented to you. You do so in search of the others, to remind yourself that they are still there and breathing; you can spot some of them easily enough, there's Liesl next to Lara, farther off was Sakurako and the new boy... Xavier? The one Lara had pulled inside earlier tonight when she had spotted him wandering the streets alone, and-

    "...ugh..."

Your attention jolts back to Lara, who stirs in her sleep.

Her eyes flicker, a haze taking them over as she looks at you, and then-

"If you were strong like me, huh...?"

The voice of the man you had taken your eyes off of speaks.

"The world chose... Randomly last time and this time, but adding one more won't hurt."

---Pain, as something runs you through the chest from behind, easily piercing your heart.

"If this works... Well, we'll call it your first step towards power, kid."

    Lara screams.

    Fire runs through your veins.

    You collapse.

Whatever strength a child might have, it is not enough to do anything after a grievous injury like that; you are barely able to understand what happened even after observing the crimson flower blooming from your chest.

    It's crystalline in nature.

Blood-red, a twisted sort of translucent spear; one that has healed all other wounds even while leaving a grievous new one all it's own. Darkness closes in on the edges of your vision, you see Lara stagger to her feet, so the man turn to regard her in an amused sort of way, and-

-darkness again lights up your vision, tearing apart the memory and returning one to their older self.

You are amidst the flames of your mind once more, body desperately struggling to push out an old curse you were starting to remember from your childhood, and yet-

    "...Well now."

-this man remains here alongside you.

Not as a memory, but as...

    Something else?

    Something with a will?

    "Always amongst flames, eh?"

    He chuckles.

    Mind's Edge, A Shared Path
    ???

A forgotten past plays out before the Inheritor, with his child self serving as a pawn of fate moving towards the starting line. An innocent desire had taken root within him that day, that had thrown him into walking the path of power's pursuit.

Though, at least for him it was a choice of his own making.

And true enough, much was gained from this decision. A power that lies beyond the means of a normal human, the awakening of a sixth sense, and all that followed on since that day. But so too was much lost. Lives, purity, innocence.

All for the sake of power... and where did this journey go?

Threatened by malicious fire once again, meeting face to face with this man once more.

"Such is the nature of adversity is it not? The strongest steel is forged in the fires of hell."

Unlike memories of old, the body of the inheritor is restored to his present day form. Older, more experienced, stronger, and yet without a wound to show for it.

Though, for ESPers like these two, such appearances hide the truth. Behind that self-healing body lies a wealth of trauma's, undoubtedly for both Ludwig and Jonathan.

"It's been a while, or perhaps it hasn't for you, Black."

Two souls that walk the path of power's pursuit.

Though, one is still lagging far behind...

Still wrapped up in the chains of his past, as a similar fire of old courses through his veins, along with the curse that began this tale.

"Have you come far on your endless journey, or has death graced you yet?"
    "Death?"

    He snorts.

"I continue to live. Much as others might wish to deny that to me." He smiles. "Some are trying to do just that right now... But I am far beyond the realm where brute force would do anything meaningful to me."

Just like back then his hands are in the pockets of that doctor's coat, completing the illusion that absolutely no time has passed for him at all; of course ESPers are odd in that regard, they age to their 'physical prime' and then stop, the body seeking to maximize it's full potential entirely on it's own.

To some people, such immortality is somewhat frustrating; it is the sort of thing that means one can only really die in battle, for others...

    It's a long-sought gift.

For this man, who sought an eternity chasing ever-greater strength...

It was probably the highest possible virtue.

Still, you don't question how he had appeared here; such a question is ultimately unnecessary after all, if there was one thing that memory had made clear...

It was that something bound the two of you together, in a manner far beyond the physical realm...

"This moment felt... Appropriate. So I stepped in to see the results."

Again, the sound of a mad scientist.

The eyes that search this inner realm do so with that same flair of scientific madness, but there's also genuine curiosity in it too. Indeed, he makes a sound like a hum as he does it, observing the flames and perhaps something beyond the flames, before crimson eyes flicker back to you.

"I see the souls you carry are still asleep."

    He chuckles.

"That's a little surprising, if they were awake, well..."

He gestures towards the world around you.

"Crushing all of this would be a simple matter, no?"

    ---Again.

---He's behaving similarly to how he had that day.

    ???

Much like that day, determined eyes stare back at the man clad in a healer's robes.

Though this time, the boy doesn't form a pair of fists. Such a desperate defense was no longer needed, or rather, he had learned to defend himself through other means.

Mind, body and the depths of his own soul had been weaponized in order to survive. The fire within him unwilling to extinguish, whether by the myriad of curses thrown his way, the descent of magic beyond his own, even a weapon designed to neutralize the superhuman hadn't ended his journey.

Though, it hadn't been through his own strength he had made it this far. However there is nothing wrong with that.

Even the man before him wouldn't be so foolish to dismiss the power that was born from others. The desire to protect those that are cherished, the knowledge found within the experiences of others.

Or even, the might of souls laying dormant within one's own sea of souls.

"Is it so surprising? You can tell can't you, this world is one where those 'fools' had enough strength to persevere throughout the night. Strength to save the world without sacrificing anything."

Yes, every ESPer shares a connection to the Soul Sea. The collective consciousness that encompasses any and all that live within the world.

Each world has it's own, and perhaps even those are part of greater whole still.

    A unity, embracing all.

"This world, and the one we hail from... differ in the parts that matter most."

Those heroes back then, those that fell and those that beat any and all odds thrown their way, they had all managed to do so with the support of countless souls gifting them their strength.

    ---Eclipse.

A power that even Lara had awakened to, and yet... it remained out of reach for Ludwig.

Perhaps he didn't have the strength to trample through the gate, or perhaps an outsider like himself wouldn't be allowed inside.

It boils down to the same principle.

"Perhaps you are right. With their aid, this might not even be an exchange."

    You were yet weak.

    Powerless.

---And what will you do for that strength?

"All the same, I'm not about to give in. I was taught better than that."

"Is it so surprising? You can tell can't you, this world is one where those 'fools' had enough strength to persevere throughout the night. Strength to save the world without sacrificing anything."
    "..."

He tilts his head, eyes shifting for the first time you had known him from his usual casual arrogance...

    "...Is that right?"

    ...To mild surprise.

The way he had always called them fools... It hadn't been done out of what one might call traditional malice. He was not the sort that had hated those heroes; far from it, he had approved of them because they were powerful members of humanity, but had derided them as fools because they had chosen to give up their lives -and consequently their power- to save the weak ones around them, those that had chosen to let their heroes go out front. Let them confront the darkness alone and let them die for their sakes.

In his mind, it should have been the other way around; the weak should have died so that the strong could persist, it would have been better in the long run.

His logic was as simple as that.

You could understand it now, all these years later.

    "..."

For a moment, he seems to ponder this new bit of information; but...

"Good for them. They had power enough to back up those ideals of theirs... I can't disapprove of it."

    He chuckles.

"Perhaps you wound up in an interesting place? A world where everyone was strong..."

    A smile.

---A true one, rather then a mad one.

---But it doesn't change where either of you came from; things hadn't worked out quite so well for the world you had forgotten.

Still, playing the role of aloof mentor, a stranger that continued to change your life each time you encountered each other, that man...

"All the same, I'm not about to give in. I was taught better than that."
    "...Naturally."

    He nods.

"...You are an ESPer boy. Your origin will always be pain."

    He locks eyes with you.

"It's not enough to want that power. You need to feel that pain. You need to need that power. Ride those emotions, rather then lock them away."

    ---His voice is surprisingly serious.

"For you it might even be more simple then most. Feel it, how unfair your past is. How unfair that world was. Use your power to make them feel it too. Project it throughout the sea."

    He turns away.

"After that... Well, what's left to get in your way? Cripple your enemy. Give her a wound that will persist in reality. You can track her from that... Even if she hides her voice."

    He chuckles.

"---Crush all obstacles on the path towards what you believe. Life isn't complicated."

There is no need to ask his motives.

Regardless of circumstances or his opinion on the man, Ludwig could understand what drove him even now. This man would sow the seeds of his own downfall if it meant that the strongest would remain. In his view there is no room for the weak and feeble, other than beneath his boots.

He speaks from his heart, not out of the goodness of it no, but because such is his philosophy. Hide not what you are, be proud of your strength.

---Why did you keep it all sealed within anyway?

Hiding away your soul behind that stoic expression, as if the world couldn't hurt you even if it tried.

It had hurt you, had it not? Painfully, continuously, without mercy.

And yet you had kept the darkness within you at bay, unwilling to let it slip out and taint others, to what end?

---Because you wanted to become a star of hope? A light that offers comfort to those that watched it's movement? A champion of mankind, like the myths that inspired man since the dawn of time?

    "Heh."

Why did you ever believe these two concepts were separate?

That light and dark could not be together in harmony?

Are you not the one to forge such a Unity?

Something is lost within that moment.

A mask shatters, a twisted, savage grin forming with resentment, glee, anger and yet... a strange calmness.

    The silence before the storm.

    Before another awakening.

"Crush any and all that stand in my way... Yes, why not."

All that lays within slips out, anguish, resentment, bitterness, pain, passion, pride.

    Power.

Those flames that dared consume all you are, all you could ever hope to be... let them try.

See if they can swallow up an ocean's worth-!

Feel it, the desire to prevail, the will to live, the need not to compromise with the unfairness of a cruel world, with this unreasonable foe.

Let her behold the entity she and all the other elders had forged in that infernal pit.

Look upon your creation, and know that this was all set in motion by your own hands.

Meld together darkness and light, love and hate, hope and despair.

What lies at the end is your answer.

"Who dares dictate this twisted reality in the first place? Why should I approve of it, this irrationality? I'll be the author of my own fate, and smash past any that thinks otherwise."

Relish in what you are, the experiences that forged you, the trauma's that shaped you. Whether tragedy or fortune, joy or pain, these are your own unmistakable memories, the cornerstones of who and what you are.

No one is allowed to take them from you.

    ---No curse.

    --Not Binit.

    -And certainly not this woman.

Feel the beating of your heart quicken, feel your mind connect with the sleeping wills of those within, awaken them as you yourself awaken to your truest self.

Trample any and all obstacles that stand in your way, break through it all.

And be proud of what you are.

Only through such a step will you be able to move forward, to further strength.

And thus, once again, the boy sets foot into the world of the supernatural.

But this time, he will stop at nothing.

"Keep watching, you bastards thinking you can play God. We'll meet one day, prepare yourselves."

"Well, no one on either side is dead."

Answers the voice in a matter-of-fact sort of way.

“In that case…” Speaking was difficult. Then again Raz probably didn’t want to know what condition his lungs were in.

”I’ll adjust my answer to your previous question. If you can achieve such a result then…one person basically dying still beats a TPK. I bet Ada thinks I looked cool!”

"But I think the princess had a bit of a plan to get everyone out of there. Picking fights with villains is all fine well and good, but in this case discretion was probably the better form of valor. You picked a fight with an immortal. Although... I suppose this suicidal tactic of yours always works out for you, so I can see why you keep it up."

“…Heh. It might be out of character for me to say it, but ‘works out’ might be a stretch.”

It hurt to die. It hurt to rip. It hurt to be cut, and burned. It hurt to feel your insides tear.

Maybe it was the strange, motherly presence, or maybe it was the dream like world but…

Raz found himself thinking about things he often didn’t think about. Fighting hadn’t been wrong. That motherfucker hurt his friends. His family. And it’s not like they wouldn’t have been in danger if they hadn’t. Negotiation might have been possible, but a deal with the devil came with a cost.

In combat, he had at least been able to define the price as a pound of flesh.

Moreover…if fighting hurt well… hitting John, cutting him in half? That shit felt pretty good.

Cant wait to do it again!

Next was taking a bit of stock.

Anything short of death could be mended by dia, or one of its analogues. That raised some fairly worrisome questions. Considering the power already displayed, the idea that his savior didn’t possess a simple healing magic seemed, unlikely. Instead…

Raz remembered another spell. More myth than myth. A power wielded by the Plume of Dusk, the first COMPs, and lost with them, if not before them.

    ”…Recarm…?”

The lost art. A spell of the Gods, death’s denial.

”Are you sure you are a janitor? With that power…shall I make a guess? I have heard of one particular type of person, I believe you would be better described…as an elevator attendant, right? Well, it’s a pleasure to meet you. Allow me to express my gratitude, over dinner perhaps?”

Raz couldn’t see through the gloom, perhaps that was because of the darkness…or maybe, he didn’t have eyes. That much reiki coursing through his body…maybe he had failed to regulate it with the holy sword. He might have boiled them out.

Still, while it was just a guess…the world between worlds. And powerful entities that took an interest, when they saw the power of the heart made manifest. Avalon’s lore spoke of such places, though only in whispers. Eyes or not. Sight or not, through the gloom it might be possible, if he was right…just a hint of that well known color…

”But my greatest power? Hah, you saw it. And it’s not death, or the sword, it’s not even wishing star! My greatest power is my friends of course, and my enemies too! Anyone I meet forges my heart. Isn’t that why you brought me here? …To the velvet room?!”

    "...Pfft."

    The voice snorts.

"I was definitely the janitor. I was handed a mop and a broom and told to sweep up more then once, the downsides of house arrest I suppose."

    She chuckles.

"And no... I am not an attendant of the Velvet Room. That would be... Well, right now I believe her name is Agatha, but that's neither here nor there."

The non-existent figure continues it's movements, or rather, your body continues to behave as if someone outside of yourself is pumping your heart for you.

"I am not human. Nor was I born from humans. I'm an... Outsider to all of this trouble, a bystander, someone that just happened to be around when everything went down and got caught up inside of it. Even so, it doesn't really involve me."

    A pause.

"...Well, I suppose I've involved myself from time to time, but it rarely ends well." Another chuckle, as her voice continues to emanate from the darkness around you. "I can't say I'm not involved right now either, I'm keeping you alive after all... But make no mistake, this is not a... Physical place... I suppose you could say that we're inside of your soul right now. I'm... Well, I'm using a power that would be difficult to explain to appear here and loan a bit of my own energy to you."

---So she was an entity that could manipulate souls.

But she had called herself an alien earlier right? Could aliens manipulate souls?

    Well...

Aliens rarely played by the same rules as humans, so you couldn't say it was impossible...

"You can't see me because... Well, humans are rarely pleased when they see what I look like, so I've made it impossible for you to do so."

    A chuckle.

"...So dinner won't work out either I'm afraid, although I'm flattered that you offered; then again, you were always nice to girls."

"You sure about that? Other than muscle men, my strike zone is huge! And I couldn’t help but notice you said your appearance would be unpleasant to me, not mine is unpleasant for you. Shouldn’t that be a decision I got to make? Come now, you are waaaaaay to uptight. Be honest now, when is the last time you got laid?”

Raz mentally filed away a piece of knowledge to report when he got back. The velvet room, per Avalon’s current understanding, could have multiple “attendants”. One or even more then one per visitor, with more speculated to be unbound. The idea that there was currently only one either meant the entity here was acting on the wrong information, was lying, that there was only one current resident, or that the room itself was restricted in some fashion.

    Not impossible, but disturbing.

“I mean, if you have been on…house arrest, did you call it? You can’t have gotten much action lately. Plus, I probably owe you a thank you for stitching me up!”

    "..."

The voice goes silent for quite some time.

Of course it's only natural, the questions that have been thrown her way are somewhat awkward for most people to answer; indeed, the silence is the silence of the embarrassed or the stunned (hard to say for sure without being able to see her face) but eventually, yes eventually...

    "...Hah..."

    A sigh.

"Somehow, I knew you were going to insist."

    ---It's not an unfriendly voice.

---Her words earlier had even implied a certain familiarity with you, now that you thought about it. Of course that could be familiarity with your stage persona, but would an alien truly care about things like that?

"I don't think you understand. I'm not... Well, I wouldn't say I'm ugly. You're certainly one of the more handsome humans as well, but how do I put this..."

She pauses, and the sound of a finger tapping on an invisible chin becomes apparent.

"It's like with... Cain. You remember Cain? The moment you saw him, the collective unconscious of your species warned you about him. It's kinda like that..."

    Another pause.

    Another sigh.

"But fine, fine, you'd just keep asking until I showed you, right? Let's get this train wreck out of the way."

There's the sound of shuffled movement, then...

    "Y-Yoooo...?"

    She says, nervously.

    -A maid?

-You had been expecting some sort of tentacled horror at the very least, but this was definitely a maid. Heck, judging by the name-tag, she was actually a maid-cafe maid...!

    "M-moe moe kyun!"

    Yep.

Definitely dressed in a maid outfit, and...

You didn't know what she was talking about...

You didn't feel anything extra upon seeing her at all; well, beyond the maid thing, which may actually be shockingly important to you.

    “Oh wow.”

    Jackpot!

”OK, let’s just address the elephant in the room. First off, you are adorable!”

And she was too! Raz had been pressing her of course, but in reality he was expecting at best her to be attractive in a “broadening horizons” sense. Not an adorable shut in with a cosplay collection! Oh sure, Raz heavily doubted that was exactly what she looked like. More to the point she probably was hiding her form in a second way. But this was probably somewhat closer, more likely to let her “essence” leak out a bit more.

”Second, it’s not who someone is but how they act that defines them. If Cain hadn’t been an asshole I might have hit on him too! And there are plenty of jerks who aren’t worth my time who are big standard humans. There is no such thing as an ‘enemy of humanity’ or ‘an existence to be rejected’ until someone chooses to be those things!”

“Third, while I could just call you ‘Moe Moe’, it’s certainly fitting. But since you have opened yourself up for me, indulge me once more…might I know your name?”

    "...Unexpected."

    She blinks.

"You just... Completely ignored the curse, huh...?"

Her reaction -that of sudden wide eyes- makes it clear that she had definitely been expecting more of a blatant rejection of her existence instead of well, more or less just being called cute by someone. In that regard she seemed convinced that this curse of hers existed, but you hadn't felt anything even in your weakened state, then again...

Concepts often had trouble grasping at you.

Perhaps this was an extension of that?

---Or perhaps your libido was a mental barrier all it's own?

    Either way...

“Third, while I could just call you ‘Moe Moe’, it’s certainly fitting. But since you have opened yourself up for me, indulge me once more…might I know your name?”
"It's Aislynn." She says simply, no longer stuttering in her words. "Aislynn Wevere."

    Another pause.

She falls back into a sitting position, legs crossed, hidden beneath the cloth of the maid outfit. It begs the question of why was wearing it, doesn't it? That looks like a work outfit, so had all of this caught her in the middle of one of her shifts? Was she projecting herself into you in the middle of a work shift?

How had she known you were in trouble at all?

    ---Well, then again...

    Alien.

At least if you took her by her word, and yeah...

You sort of get the vibe...

This isn't her original form, but it's definitely closer to what she 'actually looks like.'

A 'human form' if you will.

"...And I am afraid you're mistaken. I was definitely labeled an enemy of humanity, I was a big-shot villain back in the day."

An odd thing to say about oneself; although now that her 'appearance' has been accepted it doesn't seem like she plans on moping around about it either...

“What a pleasure it is to make your acquaintance, miss aislynn. I would kiss your hand if I was sure I had any lips. But let me assure if nothing else, you’re is a form to make a dead heart pound, I am in unique position to know!”

Inwardly Raz racked his brains to think of anyone he might have heard of with that name, but nothing came to mind. The DTG was still dormant, but honestly Raz doubted he would have any information either. Some mysteries were lost to time, or at least were not shared with the “jester”, as it were. Still, primary sources were the best anyway, as the detective COMP would have said.

”I suppose that explains the house arrest/janitor job. I guess that would be what they call ‘community service’ right? Well, you know, back in the day, I was a squire they were about to kick out because nobody knew what to do with me. Then I learned to sing. I don’t really care about moldy old grudges in the first place!”

That was a key part of being a knight. Well, not everyone believed in the premise. The oaths often took different forms. But the first role in Raz’s book wasn’t slaying the bad guy.

It was saving a damsel in distress.

”Since you appear to have some free time Mademoiselle, how about a story? Like the one about how the enchanting maid came to be? I would be happy to offer a song in exchange!”

"That too, yes." She confirmed. "But recently, the nightmares had become more... personal."

She fidgeted, averting her gaze from the angel to steel herself before once again summoning the courage to tell Lailah this while looking at her in the eyes; it's not the full truth, but close enough that it should convince her...

"I... I dreamed of going on a mission, only to find mother and aunt Alisa d-dead when I returned." She said with trembling lips, thankfully without tearing up. "It was... it was so scary and realistic, I just..."

Cosmos shut her eyes to stop herself from bringing the memory of their dead bodies back to her mind, and took a deep breath.

"I know I'm being selfish, but..." She bowed. "Please help us, Miss Lailah."
