    'So our theory was correct!'

Let us have a little recap! After escorting the lady who called herself Kagura from LOVELESS and saying goodbye to Fujiwara Miyu, Cosmos had spent the next few days mostly in the library, searching alongside Illia on information regarding "Bunny-ears people" and the strange tattoo on Kagura's hand (though somewhat strangely, Illia strongly insisted that she sticks with the books in the Church while leaving the net searching to her). While they had found nothing on the tattoo, they did found that in Japanese Mythology, the moon seems to be regarded as the home to moon rabbits. The fact that NWAB had their headquarters on the moon and reported nothing of the sort implies that such a thing wasn't really true...

So one of the theory that they propose was that the bunny people must have come from another world where the moon is actually populated by moon rabbits, or at least bunny-ears people. Of course there are more mundane explanations, such as being the descendant of a rabbit and human that simply live in rural areas as to not be found, but...

The fact that Cosmos sensed Kagura as a "Messiah" was the one that led her to favor her "different world" theory, as she had naturally assumed that her forgotten "master" was the "Messiah" of this world.

(The implication of such a thought regarding herself and her faith seems to have gone over her head, or perhaps Cosmos simply wished to ignore it).

'Still, an artificial world implied to be created by just a single person? That is a rather monumental feat.'

'Mm.' Cosmos silently agreed with her COMP's assessment. 'It is impressive, but scary too...'

That means Miss Aesop, Miss Risu, and this Akio that they mentioned are absurdly powerful people, certainly more powerful than herself or Alyx. Of course they seem to be good people, so there should be no cause for concern, but nevertheless Cosmos unconsciously shifted in her seat a little bit.

Still, the confirmation that multiple worlds exist with that statement is huge. It opens up a lot of possibility, both good and bad, that they should really take into account, such as the fact that there might already be people from another world coming into theirs. Again, Miss Kagura seems like a nice lady too, and the fact that she is a "Messiah" should only enhance that fact, but...

What is a "Messiah" doing in a world different from her own?

It's sort of like a temporary shelter I guess? A pocket world inside a world? Although, we don't really have an endgame... Sort of just biding our time until we can figure out what to do about it-!"

"It's... nothing special, really." Cosmos began, fidgeting with her hands. "Back in our world, we were investigating a mall. There's this enormous fountain, and I thought whatever I've been chasing is hiding in the depths, so I jumped in, with Alyx following me. The next thing we knew when we resurfaced, we were already in another world."

The memory of nearly drowning made her shudder once again. She swears to never leap into any body of water anytime soon...

"So that's how you ended up in that world!" Sariel chimed in after being silent for a while. "I don't think I've heard that LOVELESS has a fountain that can transport people to another world, but then again I'm just a guardian angel. I'll ask Lailah or someone higher if they know about it after we return!"

"Speaking of our world," Cosmos quickly added, a thought suddenly striking her like a bolt of divine inspiration. "About this temporary world and the people you've saved... How about moving them to ours? That would solve the problem, and Miss Ritsu and her friends could continue searching for their friend!"

While Sariel seems to be agreeing with her idea, smiling while nodding her head, her COMP let out a small sigh in her head... which isn't a good sign. To confirm her thoughts, Illia came out from her Rosary, which is a surprise considering that she rarely came out at all aside from when they're alone.

"Good morning. I am Illia, Cosmos' partner, and it is nice to meet you. Know that I am thankful to you for saving her, and please note that what I am about to say is simply a realistic assessment of what that proposal means. I do not mean any offense."

Cosmos squirmed as Illia now turn her attention to herself, knowing what's to come. Sariel, for her part, squirmed too, even though Illia doesn't look angry at all.

"We don't know the population of this world... the number of people that Miss Ritsu and her friends has saved. The fact that this artificial world has a city implies that at the lowest, we're looking at numbers in the thousands. Such a large number of people suddenly appearing out of nowhere with no official identification or shelter would only cause chaos." Illia calmly said, not raising her voice at all. "I am not opposed to what you are suggesting Cosmos, but we must first discuss this with people back home like Mary... and even then, it would require coordination, planning, and cooperation from both sides for it to succeed, assuming it is approved in the first place."

It was not a complete rebuttal, nor was it a complete acceptance. Illia was simply, through her words, gently reminding Cosmos to not be hasty and think things through before making a promise she might not be able to fulfill.

"For now, what we should be asking is... Could we even get back home?"

Cosmos - who looked like a daughter receiving a scolding from her mother as she listened intently to what Illia has to say - gave her COMP a confused look. "Of course we can. Miss Ritsu confirmed that they are world-travelers, and Miss Aesop already brought us here. That means they can definitely help us get back home without trouble!"

She then looked back at the two identical women in front of her, her eyes showing complete belief in what she just said.

    "Right?"

    "..."

As I thought, scientist have an outstanding ego. At this rate, any conjecture I throw at her will be swiftly refuted. Common sense is thrown out of the window when interacting with a researcher who believes they stand on a higher plane, even when they themselves would fiercely deny such claim. Even so, I can't help but to -slowly, but surely- draw a grin on my face, an expression summoned naturally by the presence of adversity and an opponent that is tough to defeat. Granted, to me, every enemy is stronger than myself, but this one is different that most others, you see, for we share the same battlefield. Against a foe that uses words to fight instead of weapons, I shouldn't feel powerless against. Against her, there is a chance of victory in the horizon.

    "... Is that so?"

Before I know it, I've been caught in the urge of throwing this person off their balance through arguments alone, an inexplicable desire to watch them lose their seemingly flawless composure if only for a second, to strip her of the right to wear their iconic lab coat and take it for myself. Yes, for a moment, I forget that in 'picking a fight' with someone who's fame precedes them I am making myself look like an idiot, and allow a hundred designs of victory to ram into my mind at once.

"That's right, I have something that you desire in my possession... BUT-!" My voice comes off as dramatic, the evil contained within able to be perceived with it. "What makes you think I am going to hand it over for free...?! NAIVE-!"

I must thank you, Kyp. For you have paved the path that will lead us to victory. You have granted me this position of power I would not be able to reach otherwise.

Oi, why are you retreating...? I-I would never trade you for riches! This is just an act!

"So what is it going to be, Scientist of Xanadu?! Will I see ten-digit numbers show up in my bank account? Perhaps I'll be able to move permanently to a paradisiacal island in the Caribbean Sea? Or maybe... You willing to offer your virginity as a compensation, woman?!"

There it is, the final definitive blow.

There is no way such a workaholic like her can live a normie life. And if that is the case, there is also not way she can remain steadfast against this kind of mental attack. I win. Even if the cost of victory is death, I have already won-!

Wait... Why I am doing this again?

    A Brief Respite

    Click.

    Clack.

    Clack-click-clack.

Hands move across the mechanical keyboard as if playing a complex melody. There is no room for error, nor for hesitation.

    Click. Click. Click-click-click-click.

It's been a while. Not since the old computer has been used; it gets plenty of action every day. Rather, it's been a while since those fingers tapped on those keys with such force. Normally a tool for leisure, the keyboard and the computer attached to it are now being used with purpose.

    Clack. Clack.

Programs open up. Mainly chatrooms. A sea of hellos from familiar names greet the visitor, but none are the names being sought after.

    Click. Clack-click?

Negative. Nobody has heard from that person. They went inactive around the same time the visitor did. Is she coming back from her break?

    Clack-clack. Thump.

No. She's just checking up until - there. A blinking icon. A private message request.

The hellos become goodbyes as all the windows close, until only one remains. A blinking cursor types out low resolution text.

    Open Chat Log?

[16:34] Midsummerdream: Howdy boss. What brings you to this neck of the woods?
[16:34] Midsummerdream: There are plenty of better ways to get a hold of me, y'know.

The cursor blinks. Fingers hesitate for a moment, before descending. Clack-clack.

    [16:35] Tantei_Robo: I know.
    [16:35] Tantei_Robo: Daisuke isn't available.

    The response is nearly instantaneous.

[16:35] Midsummerdream: I getcha, boss. Kid's busy getting overhauled so you had to talk to me the old fashioned way.
[16:36] Midsummerdream: Like old times, huh?
[16:36] Midsummerdream: Y'know, I'm hurt, boss. You haven't been around as much lately. Sometimes I feel like you forget I'm even here.
[16:36] Midsummerdream: It's good to be wanted, right? But feeling useless is just the worst! Almost as bad as being bored! I hate it!
[16:36] Midsummerdream: So thanks for finally remembering I exist.

    [16:37] Tantei_Robo: lol
[16:37] Tantei_Robo: As if we didn't just go trekking through the Demon Server together.

[16:37] Midsummerdream: That doesn't count! You were visiting, not the other way 'round!

[16:37] Tantei_Robo: You're visiting right now, aren't you? I thought we agreed you'd only go through the above-ground channels.

[16:37] Midsummerdream: Sure! Above-ground channels for above-ground, and sneaky back doors for everything else.
[16:37] Midsummerdream: Messing with people online isn't as fun as it used to be though... all these restrictions and regulations.
[16:37] Midsummerdream: Don't you miss the days where you could do anything from your computer? Nowadays you can't even hide your IP.

[16:38] Tantei_Robo: You're hiding it right now, aren't you? And so am I.

[16:38] Midsummerdream: Yeah and it's a pain. The moment the Harmonizer figures out I'm jacking in from you-know-where, I have to reset everything.
[16:38] Midsummerdream: Soon it'll be impossible to even talk like we're doing right now without some organization or another spying in.
[16:38] Midsummerdream: Ah the good old days...
    [16:38] Midsummerdream:

[16:38] Tantei_Robo: Ew. Talking like an old man doesn't suit you. If you're supposed to be eternally youthful you could at least act like it.
[16:38] Tantei_Robo: There are still plenty of ways to avoid being tracked online. Like using a certain dead MMO nobody plays anymore.
[16:38] Tantei_Robo: And what's with that cursed emoji? Did you dig it out of some old archive?

    [16:38] Midsummerdream: =3=
    [16:38] Midsummerdream: I'm sad!!!!
[16:38] Midsummerdream: Here is my big sis completely ignoring me until she needs help!
[16:39] Midsummerdream: At least console me or something!!!!!!!

[16:39] Tantei_Robo: Daisuke was fuming when I got back.

    [16:39] Midsummerdream: Oho?

[16:39] Tantei_Robo: What did you say to him?

    [16:39] Midsummerdream: fufufu
    [16:39] Midsummerdream: fufufufufufufufu
    [16:39] Midsummerdream: It's a secret~
[16:39] Midsummerdream: But it's always about him, huh... not even a bit of concern for little old me.................

[16:40] Tantei_Robo: I don't have to worry about you. If anything, you should be the concerned older sibling in this relationship.
[16:40] Tantei_Robo: But I know you like to play the part.
[16:40] Tantei_Robo: I've been hoping you and Daisuke could be friends.
[16:40] Tantei_Robo: Is it really that hard for you to get along?

[16:41] Midsummerdream: It's probably not impossible!
[16:41] Midsummerdream: But seriously, that kid is too straitlaced. Nee-chan, if you're not careful he'll grow up to be a proper stick in the mud.
[16:41] Midsummerdream: Whenever I suggest anything he just shoots it down. And he always talks to me like I'm some kinda career criminal.
[16:42] Midsummerdream: At least you hear me out!!!
[16:42] Midsummerdream: But Daisuke's convinced I'm some kinda bad influence. Sure you didn't leave a big ol' stick up there last time you did maintenance?

[16:42] Tantei_Robo: He's young and responsible. You should be responsible too.

[16:42] Midsummerdream: Responsible and merry don't belong in the same sentence! Besides, you'd hate me then.
[16:42] Midsummerdream: I'm more useful to you as I am, right?
[16:42] Midsummerdream: Just a cheery little gremlin, creeping past, a proper good fellow, that's what nee-chan needs me to be!
[16:43] Midsummerdream: But I haven't gotten to do any creeping or flying or eavesdropping or any of the fun stuff at all.
[16:43] Midsummerdream: Hey, nee-chan, am I a bother? Do you dislike talking to me? Am I too crooked for a goody two-shoes like yourself? Should I just go away?

[16:43] Tantei_Robo: You can stay. Because you're cute.

    [16:44] Midsummerdream: 😳

[16:44] Tantei_Robo: Even when you're being all dramatic and acting out for attention.

    [16:44] Midsummerdream: 😜
[16:44] Midsummerdream: So what's the job?
[16:44] Midsummerdream: You wouldn't be going through the account Daisuke doesn't know about if it wasn't something you wanted to keep secret even from him.
[16:45] Midsummerdream: Fufufufufu, deceiving your own COMP and contacting the Demonic Server through illicit means, that's my aneki! Boss! Nee-chama!

[16:45] Tantei_Robo: I'm not keeping anything secret from Daisuke. He's just busy doing something else. And he doesn't need to worry about it. As for that last part...
[16:45] Tantei_Robo: It's not that I don't trust the SDCD. They're all great people. Far better than me.
[16:46] Tantei_Robo: But so much has happened this week that it's all starting to feel weird.
[16:46] Tantei_Robo: Like we're dancing in Buddha's palm, or moving along a set of rails.
    [16:47] Tantei_Robo: I won't be someone's puppet.

A pause. Two pairs of eyes stare at the blinking cursor, wondering, hesitating. But soon enough the decision is made.

[16:48] Tantei_Robo: We'll be going N@rth within the week. Me, and a few other Tamers. From the other organizations as well. There's going to be some sort of dig, I think.

    [16:48] Midsummerdream: oooooooooooo
    [16:48] Midsummerdream: Sounds absolutely boring!
[16:48] Midsummerdream: So lemme guess, you want me to snoop around and make sure there's no mole in the group? You expecting it to go south?

    [16:49] Tantei_Robo: No.
    [16:49] Tantei_Robo: And yes.
[16:49] Tantei_Robo: Everything's moving, building up to there... I don't need to you do anything. Just be there, stay out of sight, and keep your eyes open. If something happens, just do whatever you need to. And if it doesn't, don't cause any trouble. Think of it as a free chance to hang out in the human world.
    [16:50] Tantei_Robo: Understand?

    [16:51] Midsummerdream: fufufufufufufufufufufufufufufufufu
    [16:52] Midsummerdream: I get, it, nee-chan.
[16:52] Midsummerdream: When it feels like you're just playing a bit part on some shoddy stage...
[16:52] Midsummerdream: You just need a Fool to show up and ruin everything, right?
[16:52] Midsummerdream: Someone outside the calculations, that nobody knows about and nobody will care about.
[16:52] Midsummerdream: The wrench in whatever nasty prank is being planned in the shadows.
[16:53] Midsummerdream: Even a pawn in the right place can swing the match. And sometimes all you need to do is put that piece on the chessboard when the opponent isn't looking.
[16:54] Midsummerdream: Sorry for calling you a goody two-shoes, boss! You're the best! And just as devious as ever!

[16:54] Tantei_Robo: I wish I was. You were right. I've been getting complacent.
[16:55] Tantei_Robo: It's fun, being a good person, making friends. But you can't win just by following the rules. Taking refuge in your own righteousness isn't strength at all. If I stick to the 'proper' path, I'll forget the feelings of those that have strayed from it, and lose the ability to help them. It's the job of the Fool to humiliate the King when he messes up, to make sure the lesson is learned. No one besides you can do that.
[16:55] Tantei_Robo: I'm counting on you. Whatever happens, we probably won't see it coming...
[16:55] Tantei_Robo: So make sure they don't see you coming, either.
[16:55] Tantei_Robo: And try to be nicer to Daisuke. He wants to be your friend. He's just scared of being irresponsible. That's not his fault; it's mine.

    [16:55] Midsummerdream: Got it boss!!!!!!!
[16:55] Midsummerdream: You can count on me!!!!!!!

The brief conversation ends, and she lets out a long sigh.

Will it be enough? Some sort of wheel is turning, and it feels as if one Tamer can't possibly stop it. The sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach isn't going away. So close to her goal, and yet so far, and now all this... these revelations and ominous discoveries... all are building up to something.

    Something...

Well, there's nothing to to do but confront that 'something' head-on.

And if she should hide an ace up her sleeve for the occasion, who could blame her?

    Raz Stone
Avalon, Woods ~ Path to the Akarana Residence
    Morning

...She is right you know. Now I know why throwing you through the wall didn’t kill you. I should have known that hitting you in the head wouldn’t do any damage!

Raz ignored his partners grousing, again, as he had done frequently over the last couple of days.

“Why Erika, if I didn’t know better, I would swear you were worried about me, ahaha...ooooh!” Raz said, half doubling over has his friendly chuckle turned into a rasping cough.

“Oooh, ok, yeah, it still hurts to laugh.” Raz finished wryly, rubbing at the lower part of his floating rib cage. In theory Avalon’s excellent healing facilities should have done all needed to restore him physically, even though he was mentally exhausted, but even now, it was hard taking a full breath or straightening his back without sending a shooting line of pain and protest across his chest. It was possible that his body still knew it “should” be hurt, even if it wasn’t, and therefor was reflecting the notion of his recovery.

Or maybe some sharp eyed and even sharper tongues nurse had deliberately skipped a bit on his recuperative Magic’s to teach him a lesson about self endangering behavior. The dark haired boy had...admittedly...spent more then his fair share of time in the recovery ward.

Still, Raz was easily ready to take the last few days as a win. First off, he had learned something about his newest accouterment...even if he admittedly wasn’t quite sure what he had learned yet. Any knowledge was useful in this kind of situation.

Secondly Raz had added a new tale worth telling to his exploits. He hadn’t been the first knight, not Tamer to acquire the Mark, but he appeared to have been the first try experimenting with it. He had put himself in danger sure, but he had probably aided anyone else who carried the weight of the Sign.

At the very least, that was the argument the second group of his supporters on the internet. There was a healthy argument currently taking place on cyber space now considering what Raz has done. It seemed that the general gist of what had occurred in the tower was more or less well known, if mildly sensationalized and inaccurate in some of the details. There we three schools of thought on the knight known as Stone, two of which were active in the present debates.

The first school of thought was that Raz was an idiot. Brave, certainly, but stupid. Taking pointless risks. Selfless in the micro sense in that he couldn’t ignore pain in front of him, but selfish in the macro in that every time he refused to look after himself he risked his own death and thereby losing a valiant defender of the realm. Naturally it was not hard to find evidence of such in his recent actions.

The second school of thought was that Raz was neither stupid nor smart, merely brave to an excessive. First into the breach despite his status as a support mage, he sought out danger so that he might be the first to face that which could endanger anyone else. Again, this could be argued easily with the recent situation.

The final argument and people who supported such was concurrent suspicious in its, and there absence. This was that Raz was secretly one who rode the line of genius and madness, and as such many of his crazier actions simply were difficult to explain but still had a crazed reasoning to such.

The usual suspects who argued for such appeared to have contented themselves with writing new fanfiction or drawing fan art of Raz and his new mystical sigil. Well. That and also...

Heh. Well the other source of their inspiration was also another reason why was had to look at the events of Merlin’s tower as a success.

...Because belted at his side, humming softly to his ears the promise of morning and sunshine was Lied Ortus, the Song of Sunrise. Merlin’s gift and a true weapon of magic. Oh to be sure, it was in no way the equal to a weapons grade COMP. there were certainly other weapons of magecraft which far exceeded the artistic blade, but it was his, and he cherished it already.

One might ask how Raz was so informed on his fans arguments and debates but...well, he had spent quite some time abed healing. Even he could t spend all his waking hours humming new melodies. Spending some time on line and this keeping his ear to the rumor mill was also the duty of an idol.

Plus, Seriously... He had been pretty frikken bored.

At any rate, today was a chance to learn some things he needed to know, and he was running out of free time to get questions answered. Bruised ribs or not, he intended to take advantage of such.

"You even made Aya worry over you, moron... Or was that your plan the whole time you siscon-?!"

"Oh, was she worried? I'll have to send her a gift. Don't worry, you will always be the only girl for me!" The two went back and forward like that for a while, the little Manzai routine emerging naturally from a long running friendship. However as they traded good-natured jibs, they both came up short and stared blankly upon reaching their destination.

"Wasn't this supposed to be a dilapidated ruin?" Raz asked out loud, even though he knew there was little chance Erika would know more then he did.

Wasn't this place supposed to be deserted? for years? It looks maintained, hell, someone is measuring drapes!

I dunno kid. Way I heard it was boarded.

Why are you so bad at your job lately?!

Maybe I would have more time to beat feet on the case if some idjut hadn't shot off his roscoe and blown us both to kingdom come. I was sleeping off the Mickie same as you flatfoot!

Oh right. Well, whats the move?

She is a skirt and you're you. Bat the peepers at her. Usually works.

    Well, lacking any other strategy...

Raz strode up to the door, put on his most charming grin, Knocked on the door and called out "Hello! I am a knight of Avalon. We are looking for Akarana Liam!"

    Hyakka Onjouji
    Seaside Motel ~ ???
    Morning (?)

“Whoa! This really is a strange place. Is there perhaps a door with my name on it too?”

Hyakka went over to the door in question, reading the name of her teacher aloud. After, her eyes glanced down the hall, at the one door that broke the mold. Overcome with curiosity, she blatantly stared.

For a time, she stood in the hall, occasionally glancing at another door, then back to the unique one, then somewhere else. Like a moth to a flame, simple curiosity drew her back again and again. All the while, her COMP stayed silent, waiting for the young girl to finally decide between asking about it, or staying silent.

“Is it okay,” finally, she looked back and began to ask the question she had decided on, “if I look for a door with my name?”

“Can’t it wait for another time, Hana?” The AI interjected. “We’ve been enough trouble for one night.”

“Ehehe… I guess so… I almost forgot too.” Hyakka rubbed the back of her head, seeing that she was going overboard. “After all, sensei did say no diving into the depths today.”

“Really. To think it all started with investigating the garden. I guess in some sense, we were taking part in Occult Club activities before even knowing the club existed. Somehow, I feel like I’m caught in a certain,” a glare shot toward the teacher, someone’s web.”

“Yes! The ghost! Sensei, you just said she lost her weapon! If we returned it to her, maybe she could regain her memories, or rest in peace?”

“Somehow, I think that’s the last thing we should consider doing. Hana, she just said the ghost is harmless because it lost its weapon. That implies it would be harmful if it had its weapon. Why would you return it?”

“It seems like the kind of good deed that would be rewarded…”

    "...Rest in peace?"

A questioning remark, as if the idea itself was somehow... Amusing?

"No, the first thing that person would do if she got her weapon back is pick a fight with the students and faculty. That's not an experience that bears repeating, as momentarily entertaining as it might be for the staff, exposing the students to that sort of danger is not an outcome I'm willing to consider; the last time it happened, we had to close the school for two days in order to pacify her."

    Ah.

    She'd pick a fight huh?

While the ghost had seemed somewhat 'relaxed' back in the garden, the way in which she had immediately reached for a weapon -one that apparently no longer exists- did seem to hint that the ghost was somewhat aggressive, or at the very least, eager to experience the "strength" of the people around her...

Still, perhaps understanding that you'll remain curious until she puts a decisive end to the root of your question, the violet-haired teacher does give a more conclusive remark at the end, namely:

"...Although if you are curious as to what sort of weapon it was, it was a certain form of OOPart. Shaped like an ax if I'm remembering correctly... At the moment, it's within SDCD custody back at the base. There are a few of them back at the headquarters... Maybe I'll take the club on a field trip to see em one of these days."

    Ah.

There was the web again, although the brazen manner in which she manifests it now makes it clear that she's being obvious on purpose, still...

"As for the doors, feel free to look around for a bit. I don't plan on staying long, but nothing on this floor should be dangerous."

...In the end, you are able to find -or at least examine- two different doors of note.

The velvet one that had been obviously different from the start; it had remained firmly locked in the face of all attempts to open it -although unlike the other doors it did have a keyhole- and the faint sound of opera music could be heard from the cracks near the bottom of the door, and...

Secondly, you are able to find a room with your name on it.

It looks just like Sensei's, same golden plate, name marked clearly in English, but...

    Unlike hers...

...The door seems to be open a crack.

    Just a crack.

Enough that if you push on it... It just might open to reveal the contents of the room behind it, but...

"Alright Nanaya, get back here, we're getting ready to head out-!"

...Sounds like the other two are getting ready to leave...

    "The fly first? On it!"

    ---No hesitation.

While it is not within the usual Rothschild parameters -or rather the personalities of it's members- for two agents to work so closely together so as to inspire 'trust' in one another, but that is something undeniable that has manifested here-! While the silver-haired woman has her own misgivings about the bizarre nature of the bug's last attack, if you have determined that the entity itself is more of a problem than the unknown factors of it's magic, than she is inclined to believe you, yes-!

---Even as you spin the car around to get a better shot at your opponent, a massive streak of azure lightning arcing out from your hand with a roar as gathered spiritual power is actualized into elemental energy, the girl has thrown herself into the back seat of the vehicle to do the same, arm arcing out the window to face the -seemingly hypnotized- Tyrant without fear-!

But where you summon forth the shrieking sounds of artificial electricity, that girl-

-releases a volley of light spheres.

...Holy magic, by the look and feel of it.

Or rather, considering Astra's style, it would probably be more accurate to call them bombs-!

After all, you have fought both against her and alongside her long enough to know how she does things; while Astra loves to compete, she is not above fighting dirty, in fact, of all the people you could think of off the top of your head, the person most likely to lay traps around the battlefield while fighting was Astra... She had demonstrated that in the fight against the Suppression Weapon earlier in the weak, a fondness for elemental spheres that could be hidden around the battlefield as mines of many different colors/elements, in other words...

---She was the sort who would poke you with every element to see what worked, an ability aided by the mutation her spirit power had undergone as a result of the Rothschild Training regime, if she willed it, her 'spirit' could shift to mimic the characteristics of whatever element she so chose, barring the power of the Almighty-!

That is why you are unsurprised at the scatter shot-like nature of her attack, because it is unlikely her attack was something as straightforward as gunfire in the first place, no, you focus on your own strikes for now, tracing the arc of your shot in the future to confirm the hit even as Astra's spheres shoot all throughout the sky before coming to a stop in various different midair locations, and-

    -direct hit.

A storm of crackling lightning erupts at the impact site, as electricity meets expected resistance at the body of the Lord of the Flies; such powerful demons typically did not have many weaknesses, they were ancient entities who -at times- didn't seem to possess any true weaknesses at all, but-!

    Blue of Soul Success!
    Beelzebub's AGI has decreased-!
    B -> C

While most might attempt to stun others through Zio by targeting the nervous system of the target, your spirit power is of the sort to impede others entirely on it's own; it is not quite so good as a blast that fells the -strangely sluggish- Demon Lord from the sky, but one that causes a tangible slowing of it's wings as it continues it's circular path around the tower, falling just a bit behind the speed of the magitech car, but-

    ---It's but a small victory.

One that comes with the battlefield falling into further chaos, as the Tower's strange hum once again rises to a fever-pitch, and-

-something makes a violent entrance from beneath not only your vehicle, but the highway itself.

A shattering of virtual concrete and steel, a single punch from out of your line of sight that not only devastates the integrity of the world beneath your wheels, but also sends the car flying high into the air alongside it's occupants, the spinning of a horrific car end something that would have easily ended the lives of any human in the old world, but one that simply batters both you and Astra around inside of the vehicle as everything becomes a rapid, spinning mess, or rather-

---For her, it is possible that it becomes such a thing... No, trusting in her sixth sense, that woman is already moving to escape the car before she is caught in the inevitable follow-up attack of it's launching, predictions putting her down on the street below near Beelzebub, but while she does it out of reflex and instinct...

You can see everything with about 80% clarity with your eyes, program working on decoding the rapid shifts in your visual perception to give a clearer picture of exactly what was going on around you, and-

    ---There was another demon.

BABEL had managed to summon a second Demon into the battle as a familiar, and-

    This one...

While it's name wasn't quite as obvious, the vibes you got from it were that it was just as bad as that of the Lord of Flies, and that some sort of -horrendously powerful- defensive enchantment was present on it's entire body-!

    Yes...

Down below, where it had erupted from the concrete as easily as if it were water, the strange new entity-!

Lets loose a torrent of thick crimson mist, opening it's arms as the cloud moves to engulf the entirety of the flying car-!

    Amamiya Sho
    Xanadu Laboratories ~ Aoyama
    ??? - Noon

    ...Inevitable.

It's a behavior that is so common for you that one could be forgiven for thinking it stemmed from your essence itself, a driven command from your very soul to rebel against all who -by your definition- place themselves 'higher' in life than you...

A drive that, considering your personality, meant that you couldn't help but 'rebel' against basically everyone-!

It is also not the speech of a hero, while Tamers are all typically bizarre in their own way, there are few -if any- that go out of their way to come across as almost villainous in the way they talk... Yes, the response you give to the crimson-haired woman is one that surprises even you, moving the battle away from the nature of her work towards the fact that her social life is likely crippled to some extent, it's a low, fatal blow that can only be used by someone aspiring to be a villain-!

It's the sort of blow that can only be responded to with one just as damaging, and thus, you prepare yourself for death...

For that will certainly be your fate.

    Or at least...

"H-Huh?! The compensation was maybe fixing it-!"

...That is what you assume your fate would be, however-!

For that woman, who is so shocked by how low you had suddenly went in response to her rather innocuous request, the last words you utter are far more devastating than even you had expected, as if it had brought some sort of tragic past to light with-

"But what's wrong with being a virgin?!"

    -this...

A comment that is unfortunate in some ways, a controversial statement that would have almost certainly been picked up by bloggers if any had been nearby and one that you're not quite sure you had just heard correctly-!

It really feels like the sort of thing one shouldn't let slip after all, especially when she seems outright shaken by a truth that actually isn't all that bad, focusing on the implication behind your words rather than the words themselves-!

    Yes.

She does seem to be offended by it, as could be judged by the way her right hand had just balled itself into a fist that has burst into flames, however...

As a role model in the community and a responsible adult, it is difficult for her to actually go through with any form of -justified- vengeance on a student from the academy... Even if your harmonizer meant that the blow would probably just batter you around the room a bit, it was a bad look for someone who was -like a teacher- to actually strike at a student outside of the confines of the designated areas...

In other words, while her pride is wounded, that same pride in her existence as a "good role model" keeps her from avenging that same pride, a leniency you probably wouldn't have gotten at the other organizations, nevertheless-

"Ah, I thought I heard the upsetting cries of a moron, hee!"

-a fist is launched -in retribution- at your stomach; but it's not Claire that had launched the attack, oh no...

"Worry not fair doctor, hee ho! You cannot strike him hee, but as a follower of the Boss, I will become justice itself and punish this fool for you!"

    ...It's Jack.

Specifically, it seems to be Nadia's Jack, one that had just come screaming out of the darkness of the laboratory to deliver a karmic punch to your stomach that knocks the air right out of you-?!

"You cannot be offended by the nonsense that comes out of his mouth! For you see, Ms. Doctor, Amamiya himself has zero experience with romance of all sorts-! He is not capable of docking a ship in a port, hee ho! In a contest of being pathetic he wins out every time, not just because he has no guts, but because he also does not know how to shut his mouth, hee!"

Having dealt his surprise attack with remarkable speed, the small snowman backs up a few steps to stand in front of Claire like some sort of tiny knight, bouncing on the soles of snow feet as it takes exaggerated jabs at the air in front of him -and at you- like some sort of tiny disgruntled boxer-!

"Even if you did agree to his final term, he wouldn't know what to do-!"

...One who is being very much the usual Jack...

...In how blatantly mean it is in spite of him taking the "heroic" stance on this confrontation, or at least, judging by how Claire's hand goes on to collide with her own face at the mess this scene is quickly becoming...

As heroic as Jack can really be without Nadia around to guide him in a more 'reasonable' direction-!

In other words, a Demon that is willing to go even lower than you in terms of verbal combat has appeared-!

"That is Amamiya's dark truth! His inner rage! The boss would feel sad for you hee ho, but I will make you embrace the truth for your own sake, hee ho-!"

Avalon, Woods ~ Path to the Akarana Residence
    Morning

---The Akarana Mansion was supposed to be abandoned, but it certainly did seem like someone was in the process of putting the building back together...

Ultimately, the point of today's assignment was investigation into the only notable non-Tamer related roboticists on Avalon; the robots that had appeared to assault the island earlier in the week likely had to come from the island itself due to the nature of the landscape, or rather, the fact that one typically has to have some sort of connection to the Knights of the Round -or in some cases other Tamer Agencies- to really be allowed to set foot on this island in the first place...

There were civilians here certainly, but they were shopkeepers, magitech engineers, and family members of Tamer personnel... People that had some connection to the organization, even if they did not directly work under it in the same way as the Tamers do...

The paths to and from the island were controlled through both the island's natural barriers, and monitoring of the "Pulse Network" point near the island's beach, in other words...

If the robot's had emerged here, it was most likely that someone who had already been living on the isles had released them in the area around the base, thus, if the search was to be refined to non-tamer affiliated technicians, you would come to...

The Akarana Residence, or specifically, Liam Akarana himself...

Member of the infamous Akarana Family, former head of the Spiral Corporation's Robotic's Division, which had then been absorbed into the "Electronics Division" headed by his older sister Charlotte after his bizarre disappearance a few years ago...

It's a weak connection admittedly, but nothing ventured, nothing gained-!

Putting on a shining, trained smile, you knock on the door and call out as charmingly as you can-!

    And in response...

    "...Liam?"

...The door opens almost immediately, as if the person on the other side had figured this was gonna be what happened, but had chosen to try to avoid the encounter anyway.

She was tall, skin pale like a certain sister of yours, although the crimson eyes that she bore were focused in a far more 'thinking' manner than the 'annoyed' one your sister tended to use...

    Yes...

    Crimson eyes...

    Quite charming eyes-

"Oh, that's the guy who lived here before right? Sorry, I'm still trying to get a handle on things around here, just moved in yesterday."

-eyes that you tear yourself away from automatically, because you can recognize it after but a moment.

It is somewhat rude to frantically look away like that, but...

...She was clearly some form of vampire.

While it didn't seem like she was putting any real power into her eyes, meeting the gaze of a vampire is not something one risks too brazenly; it can be much like staring into the madness of the moon, ocular magic that comes from their existence itself rather than any sort of magitech device, and you find yourself circulating your spiritual power throughout your form instinctively, reinforcing your mind by rousing your soul, preparing yourself just in case she tries any sort of hypnosis...

Of course she doesn't seem actively harmful, indeed, the tired expression that exists on the other end of that door is just that, tired...

Not to mention the act of seeing a vampire on Avalon alone was strange...

As a form of demon that humanity could transform into, they were the sort that typically seemed to avoid holy places out of sheer principal of the matter, but this one...

Doesn't seem too bothered by anything, rather...

"Oh, sorry... My eyes right? Forgot I wasn't wearing my glasses."

...She's remarkably calm, a bit disappointingly calm in the face of your beaming smile, but chill nonetheless as she affixes a pair of thin spectacles to her face-!

"You're... Raz, right? I've seen the posters in town... You stood out a bit..."

    A pause, then-

"I'm pretty sure this Liam guy isn't here, just bought this house the other day, clearing some of his things out..."

-she outstretches her hand, as if she meant for you to shake it...

    "The name's Isako. Nagatani Isako."

    Meanwhile...

Your partner, being somewhat more antisocial...

Has already put herself a few feet back from the both of you in the role of 'silent bodyguard,' staring at the dark-haired woman with a light suspicion that had seemed to emerge the instant she realized this person was a vampire...

    Seaside Motel ~ ???
    Morning (?)

“It’s open.” Stating the obvious, the AI’s voice gave pause to a hand that had, without thought, reached toward the cracked door. “Just a little bit, but it’s open. Just enough to tempt you. I don’t like this, Hana. I don’t like it one bit. Let's go back.”

“Y-yeah, I… just without thinking,” the girl drew her arm back. Her eyes went from her withdrawn hand and the tiny crack. If she just got closer… pushed it just a little bit, maybe… “Sorry, Camelia, but it wouldn’t hurt just to look, right? We can go back just after I look inside, okay?”

“Hana, this place is haunted, this can’t be go-“ the AI cut itself off, as a thought occurred.

Was this bravery? In the face of an eerie, supposedly haunted hotel, Hyakka was willing to peek past a door that was likely hiding ghosts, evil spirits, and frightening wraiths?

The question passed through the AI’s mind, looped in its thoughts, and then ceased. An answer was found.

    No.

This was not bravery. Just curiosity and shortsightedness.

But before the AI could give its conclusion…

That tiny hand reached out, the small frame of the girl pressed up to the door, one eye closed and the other wide open, peering into the cracked door as it grew slightly wider…

    Hollow Fields, Academy
    World Designation: Revolution
    Noon, Foggy

In response to the strange attack, I naturally check the sensors built into my body and scan for any information that might elucidate the nature of the phenomenon. Something about it feels incomplete, unsuccessful. Attributing the lack of effect to innate resistance seems premature.

The data returns no meaningful results.

    Odd.

But even though the intended purpose of the ability just now remains unclear, its effective results are obvious. The blast has dislodged the pieces of the creature that I was holding onto, leaving me in freefall. Given its decision to relocate to the upper atmosphere, it’s a height that is worthy of concern, but only merits secondary importance at the moment.

The greater issue is the impact on my combat performance. Since I cannot freely propel myself through the air, it will be difficult to perform evasive maneuvers or get closer to resume combat. Regardless of how many meters per second I am descending, I might as well be a stationary target in aerial combat- easy target practice.

But even if I do not have the ability to fly on my own, I can at least make sure I do not fall alone.

Performing a spell of my own, ‘wings’ of my own appear in my hands to help me out of this predicament- a pair of long, thin lines made of spiritual energy. Spirit Chain is a simple spell originally made to pull a target closer. While I never imagined using it for aerial combat, the same principle applies- find purchase, and exert force to close the gap. A pair, for extra reassurance. Failing to find purchase was not a leisure that could be afforded in this situation, and there was no harm in an extra rope with which to maneuver.

Sending off the pair of spiritual coils at the creature, rather than prepare myself to get closer for another series of strikes…

…I instead turn all attention to the creature once more, focusing on analyzing its attributes once more. For information on the peculiars of its flight patterns to ensure Spirit Chain finds purchase, on the specifics of its odd attacks and what to watch out for, and of greatest interest…

… where to hit it hardest.

    Wise up!

    Name: Eva Ellet
    Comp Heat: 9/10 -> 0/10 (venting)
When Eva is in combat mode (ready to fight seriously and hasn't been caught off guard) she gains the passive stat benefits of all three COMP types, in essence, when fighting, her base stats are effectively:

    Strength: A
    Vitality: A
    Agility: B
    Sense: C
    Resistance: C

    Auto Skills
    Judgement
    Absolution

    Spells:
    Auto da fe
    Spirit Chain Usedx2
    Tarunda
    Kouha/Kouga/Kougaon
    Aura Shield
    Phantasm Step

    -Spirit Chain-
    Rank: C
    Element: Spirit
A spell that shoots out a rope of spiritual aura from one of Eva's arms, and quickly acts to ensnare a target. It inhibits their movement to a degree, but is not too difficult to break out of especially given time- it's greatest function is largely to transmit force, as grasp over the other end of the chain enables Eva to toss, throw or pull herself towards the target. Against opponents of much greater stature, this can even potentially backfire- for such cases, her end can be detached.
Although the end of the rope is capable of some basic movements such as those necessary to wind around a target, it's trajectory is very simple and it speed drops dramatically with distance. This makes it usually only suitable at close or mid range combat.

    Comp Action:
1.) Punch/Kick/Etc (Normal Attack): Deals Strength based damage to targets. Damage dealt to others can be voluntarily reduced by holding back. Can be increased or altered through the use of magic.

6.) Recall Demon/Summon Demon (COMP Action): Summon Diari to her side through use of the COMP's Demon Summoning Functionality. Cannot be used if the Demon is bound in some way. Cannot be used alongside other COMP Actions.

7.) Decode (Auxiliary-Type COMP Action): Concentrate on decoding any hidden attributes the opponent may have, such as encoded spell data or falsified physical parameters. Will not reveal everything at once -and can only decipher things that have actually been in use around it- but will generally become more effective the more times it is used on a single opponent. Cannot be used alongside other COMP Actions. (Used Again)

8.) Fortify Body (Armor-Type COMP Action): Negate the 'stun' chance of successful attacks that would target a user's weakness on this turn.

    Name: Diari
    Gender: ???
    Class: Demon (Angel)
    Weaknesses: Curse
    Neutral: Everything Else
    Resists: Light
    Stats
    STR: C
    VIT: E
    AGI: C
    SEN: D
    RES: D
    Spells

    Magarula
    Rank: D

    Element: Force
Conjures up razor winds to attack a designated area. General shape and size of the air-blades can be decided by the caster, but the strength of the blades themselves are determined by how much spiritual power was put into them (the spell rank.)

    Special Traits
    -Guardian Angel
Not a warrior by nature, these angels are those who are said to be assigned to humans at birth; as a guardian angel, albeit one who's a bit lazy at heart, Diari bears the ability of passively healing her Summoner over time simply by being present alongside her on the battlefield...
In addition, status effects that would ordinarily require the direct intervention of magic to resolve (those inflicted via a weakness) become possible to recover from over time instead; those that aren't have their duration lessened by a single turn.

"Jack... What... The hell...? Why... Here...?"

My vision becomes foggy as my balance immediately collapses, forcing me down to my knees. That bastard didn't just throw a random punch at me, the demon purposefully hit me in a way that would knock the air out of my lungs...! For the average tamer specializing in defense, it is a trivial strike that's light at best. After all, Jack Frost's size is no different from an oversized company mascot plushie. There is not much weight it can pack into its punches and it is widely known that its forte is Ice Magic. However, when it comes to me, someone whose harmonizer is weak to the Physical Element, the attack is not something I can easily disregard. No matter how weak they may look, demons are always naturally tougher than humans. When the harmonizer protection is weak, you do notice the difference. It will take me at least a few moments to recover.

... Moments he cleverly exploits by sharing my own secrets in the most vile way possible.

That's right. This is Jack Frost. A true neutral demon who follows the law when it feels like it, breaks it when it feels like it and behaves in such a way that it is impossible to classify it as either good or evil. Like several other fairies, its favorite hobby has to be pranks, and right now I am the one being played.

    "..."

I am the weak, the powerless, the hermit, the survivor. For someone who has been rejected by society, there is no place for a girlfriend in their teenage years. Its existence is incompatible with the status of an outcast.

    But I am glad.

Although I hate to agree with someone whom I have hereby declared a figure I must defeat, but there is nothing wrong with what I am. Because deep down I know that I would be even weaker if all their prejudice and my own cowardice have not changed me. It has taught me to be proactive, pave a path with whatever is available and get by through life just by living.

Case in point, Jack showing off leaves him full of openings and the scientist woman has inadvertently obstructed her own field of view, if only for a moment.

---IF THAT IS THE CASE, THEN I'LL SHOW NO MERCY---

What happens next barely takes up an instant.

Having prepared the desired configuration beforehand, I execute it through the use of a specific macro. 'Slime C' effectively turns Kyp into an extension of my body, granting me full reign of its capacities as a demon. Like me, slimes may be weak and powerless, outcasts that the world has discarded as failures, but there lies our biggest strength... The capacity to adapt. Using the human mind I fill the gaps it cannot do on its own. Imagination gives birth to power as I alter Kyp's shape, size and purpose in the blink of an eye. Normally, I wouldn't be so aggressive. But, you see... I am not being a complete tyrant here...

---Kyp wanted to do this from the get go-!

Luminescent green strings cut through the darkness of the laboratory, easily wrapping themselves around the two victims in sight. With Vanity Step acting as a support, I've ensured that no easy escape is possible. Granted, I didn't make the bindings as strong as I could in an unconscious effort not to hurt any of them, and as a result the 'slime wire' manages to retain its usual stickiness...

"There is an unspoken pact among men that cannot be broken, Jack. And you just did... I hope you are prepared to face the consequences..."

I assume a more villainous pose, one that can easily transition into mad laughter, with arms stretched to each side. I should punish it... I really should, but I have no immediate ideas in mind, so for now I'll just do my best to give him scare. It shouldn't be hard, considering I can turn Kyp into any mundane thing I can't think of, even those that Jack despises or is afraid of. And, as it happens, I know this one Jack Frost pretty well, and just as he knows things about myself others do not, I do know quite a bit about him too...!

"Fixing...? Xanadu's Scientist... You are mistaken...There is nothing to fix here besides your own misunderstanding. Kyp is more than fine as it is..."

I am not doing so bad.

Maybe I could take acting as a part-time job.

"But, let's get back on track... I believe you still haven't given me any solid proof of your identity. I have a delivery to make and I'd hate to lose part of my pay to some silly late delivery clause, thank you."

    Raz Stone
Avalon, Woods ~ Path to the Akarana Residence
    Morning

Oh hells bells and bloody water, back up flat foot!

    What? Why?

she is a frikken vampire kid!

The DTG was first to pick up on what the latent magical energies ensnaring from the young (looking?) woman’s eyes signified. Raz didn’t have much history with vampires. He had studied such during his novitiate, but the standard response advised had been along the lines of “Run away and come back with 5 knights, a half a dozen members of the church, and immediately after bathing in garlic.

...Which is to say, not the most actually useful advice. Just his luck to have had that class when his usual teacher had been sick with the Guinness 18 virus and thus the class was taught by a substitute that day.

Rerouting magical energy sport. Keep your eyes lowered. Your glasses won’t help, that’s just a myth. Try to avoid giving her any biological samples, and for god’s sake, don’t...

“Isako-Chan was it? A lovely name for an even lovelier woman!” Raz said, taking a hold of the outstretched hand, and kissing it chastely in the knuckles before releasing such.

...Kiss her, the DTG finished glumly.

”Your name sounds Japanese, am I right?” Raz went on gaily, as if he hadn’t heard at all. “I could offer you a Japanese greeting, but have you heard how westerners meet a new friend they haven’t seen each for a while?”

With that rather ominous statement, Raz pecked twice at the blood drinker, once in each cheek. “Fair lady, me and my standoffish but all together lovely compatriot are here investigating a crime, the source of several rogue pervert AI’s that take pictures of pure maidens such as yourself against their will. And indeed, a crime has surely been committed! For what else could you call it when a lovely lady is found alone and seemingly uncherished, without a song to tell even the most wayward passerby that loveliness lies within!”

The smile on his face and nascent eye roll coming from a certain tactical squire suggested this spiel was far more enjoyable to the brave but headstrong knight then it likely should have been. “Say the word, beautiful Isako, and I would be happy to compose a ballad in your honor, asking only a brief tour of the abode lucky enough to house your sleeping face! ...Perhaps we could start with the bedroom?”

...Oh Jesus Christ kid... least I don’t have to worry about you being charmed. It would crack the fabric of the whole wide world for you to actually listen when a cat what was smarter then you tried telling you what to do.

    Morning (?)

    ---Just a peek.

Just a little look, and you'll leave it all be...

It's the culmination of the night's tone, a sort of inevitable occurrence at the end of a day full of questionable decisions, where a door that is presenting itself to be opened will be opened, in spite of the 'bad feeling' that had erupted inside of a certain A.I's mind at the sight of it, of a door that must have simply come into existence the moment you entered this place, but...

    It's fine.

    Just a peek...

    Just a peek...

    You'll leave after that...

    Thus...

Your hand presses up against the firm build of the door... It's old fashioned but well maintained, there aren't any visible scratches on the surface of it or it's name plates, nor is the feeling beneath your hand anything but a smooth one... It comes across as completely normal, a thing lacking in both spiritual power -that you could sense anyway- and notable presence, but one that has your hair standing on end as you slowly push on it, leaning closer to the door crack, so as to be to pull it closed in self-defense should the need arise, and...

    Slowly...

    The door opens...

    Slowly...

    ...Too slowly, actually, as if...

Someone was pressing lightly on the other side...?

It's a realization that comes slow, perhaps because you were focusing so much on the act of pushing that you forgot about everything else, but...

The moment you think about it...

An eye opens in the crack of the door.

---Yellow, flecks of gold amidst the dark confines of a room that seems much like your room back at home.

---Hair like yours, a body like yours, skin like yours...

You can't see her whole form, but the glimpse alone, of a single eye staring back at you through the darkness, is the same sort of recognizable scene as seeing yourself in the mirror.

It's like seeing your reflection, a hard thing to mistake for something else.

    "...Not yet."

    She speaks.

    Simple words, just two words.

Two words that could mean a number of things, two words that reject your attempt at entry, two words that...

Accompany the click of a door as it falls shut once more, yes...

Amazingly, you somehow find the strength to not scream or pass out...

    At least...

    Not immediately...

    "...Fufufufufu~"

    A scary laugh.

A scary, ominous laugh emerges from the violet-haired girl at the mention of the words "onee-chan."

It had been a complete success, a different form of "onee-san aggression" that what you are used to from Chris... It is something to which you are not yet immune, like running into a different form of virus, something to which no previous vaccine seems like it will help you, yes...

    "Nothing too serious, Dai-suke-kun~!"

...It's a danger that even your User is ill prepared to deal with in some ways, the charismatic nature of a girl that is simply hard to hate, the legendary shut-in that retained the dangerous socialization powers of a normie when forced from her room, yes-!

Punctuating each syllable of your name clearly, if this had been a manga panel, you would have easily been able to see the "<3" hovering above each and every one of her words as the teasing continues; it's not something she normally does, due to your user's self-conscious nature seemingly making her more of a 'target' for Lexie's aggressively friendly personality, but-!

That particular barrier isn't here to shield you now-!

    Although...

As she shifts you onto her back and starts off into the woods you had described earlier, you lose easy sight of her expressions as she turns to face ahead, arms supporting your legs behind her back...

"I was just wondering what you remember seeing that day, at the aquarium I mean-!"

    Hmmm?

    A bizarre question...

    "At the aquarium...?"

Involuntarily, Daisuke's arms, wrapped around Lexie's shoulders for stability, tighten a bit.

It is a strange question. Not just because of there being little reason for Lexie to ask it, but also because asking a COMP what they remember is like asking a video camera what it has filmed. Daisuke could very easily roll back the footage to that day. Indeed, he had done as much, together with Chris, as they pored over every last detail of the battle and analyzed what went right and what went wrong. That was how they'd figured out the connection between the crystal that had been embedded in Shuichi, and the one dangling around Sakurako's wrist. That was how they'd deciphered those last, garbled parting words. So, why would Lexie ask such a thing?

Daisuke doesn't know. The answer is not apparent. Could he figure it out, if he spent a bit of time putting possibilities together and trying to read into Lexie's actions? Quite probably.

But, he doesn't. He does not read into the question any further. Some part of him, one he has not quite worked out a name for, is telling him that simply saying what he feels without thinking too hard about it would be best. So he does exactly that.

"The fish were really beautiful," says Daisuke. "The octopi, the eels, the crabs, especially. The shark plush you got was real cute. Not like all those figures Chris keeps around. You looked pretty happy to be there. I remembering wondering how you got so good at putting on a smile even in tense situations, cus I'm not very good at it and neither is Chris."

One by one, he voices the thoughts and images that are most vivid in his memory, the one that isn't integrated into a million other circuits.

"That Sakurako girl, I remember seeing her. She looked... kinda lanky. And gloomy. But also kind of excited, too. I guess anyone would be excited to see an old friend again. Chris seemed pretty nervous too. Oh right, and Shuichi on the ceiling... it was kinda funny. He was like a ninja from one of that old anime... it was hard to keep from laughing and blowing our cover."

Daisuke pauses, then, as his recollection shifts to the nastier parts of that afternoon.

"After everything got complicated, and we switched on Eagle-Eye, I don't remember anything specific. Just the shadows, and jumping around, and a lot of panicking. Shuichi was fighting that blonde lady. You were carrying me sorta like you are now, except with your legs, swinging on a chain. I kinda prefer it like this... Sakurako kept turning into different things and we kept trying to catch her, like a butterfly and a net. And then she busted through the ceiling, this big shadow showed up, and..."

And the rest was bitter history.

    "Why do you ask, onee-chan?"

    Junes ~ Rooftop
    ??? - Morning

    ---Once more, Magic roars.

Faced with the ominous words of a demon that seemingly meant to put you to sleep in it's next few moves, driven by a desire to overcome, to succeed against your opponent in spite of everything, you let your spirit power flow, Reiki shrieking through both you and your COMP as it is driven through countless calculations and formulas, all for the sake of giving birth to a phenomena inside of a phenomena, to support a Mythic Class Magic with a Mythic Class Magic.

    Double Galeforce.

---In some ways, a trump card that perfectly encapsulates you.

If it does not work the first time, succeed on the second try; if an attack doesn't do damage hit them harder the next time, if they out-speed you, then simply move faster...

It's a simple philosophy, and one that has served you well throughout the years, nevertheless...

---This is a dangerous sort of a miracle, a line that must be carefully towed, lest you bring ruin to yourself in but a handful of seconds.

Amongst the Tamer population, magic has been given designated "ranks" of power, E-A, with outstanding feats of impossible sorts of magic -something that truly cannot be explained- receiving the designation of EX, but...

Amongst those ranks, it can be broken down further...

E-C for instance, were conventional magics... They can be powerful phenomena in their own right, blasts of lightning, rains of swords, even things like precognition, but they do not typically tread upon the realm of Myth, no...

That's for magic of B Rank and higher, that is why they are hailed as "Mythic Class," because they begin to tread on the realm of Legends...

That is what a Tamer's "Trump Card" is, a representation of their power as a "hero," in that regard, it's no different to the legendary abilities that existed within the scope of the original age of magic, but...

---Such abilities are not to be used lightly, as the stress they put on both User and COMP is immense, using one such power while inside the depths of another of the same class, well...

Reiki rips through you like azure arcs of electricity, arcs that encompass you and Aster both, and light up your bodies with a sharp, crackling sensation of pain.

One could call it a consequence of having a soul that is a bit too strong for the body, a reality for most beings; it can supply you with enough power to do as you ask of it, but using so much so quickly will overwhelm your body, your physical vessel... The pain is a sign that you should stop, like the circuit breaker in an electrical system, but it's a pain that you can bear, a pain that you feel you must bear to defeat your opponent, thus-

    ---Instantly.

---You reach your opponent instantly, in a world that has become overrun with the sound of the wind, roaring and shrieking along with the distant sound of Reiki circulating through the COMP's magical circuits.

    Countless blows.

So fast that they might as well have been simultaneous, so fast that there is little that can be done against them in reaction, as they happen in a world in which only Ayra Lilygrove should be able to move, the reward for giving up so much energy and pain to that ability called "magic."

It is a testament to supernatural force, a decisive step into the realm of legends.

---Even for you, it's so fast that it's difficult for you to tell what's actually going on, with even your sixth sense overloading in the face of all of the 'information' storming your way, but...

    That doesn't matter.

You will defeat your opponent without fail.

Distance to opponent had been calculated beforehand, the necessary techniques were already burned into this body's muscle memory; the flash of a blade lights the area as everything falls to pieces and nothing reacts, because nothing was given the time to act, because they will already be cut by the time they realize what has happened, and yet...

    And yet...

    ---You see it.

For less than a moment, in the world of blurring colors and muted sounds, the expression of your opponent has changed, as if...

---She had recognized this strike for what it was, after all...

She had seen this Trump Card once before already-!

    That is why-!

---In opposition to a dual Trump Card, the ability of a certain Guardian of Humanity is released in response; of course, it is always something she had intended to do, the charging of spell to settle this battle once and for all, and-!

Reality shifts, ever so slightly, as Concept Magic attempts to force itself over this tiny section of the planet.

    Renown Check!
Ayra Lilygrove (Gale Knight) VS Mikagura Genbu (Starlit Guardian of the North)
While the Land Forgets... The Sea Remembers it's debts...
    90 < 150 (?)
Unable to negate alteration to reality, however, effects are weakened...!

    ---It feels wrong.

The timing of the impacts, your own swings, they are hitting something that they should not be; it's a realization that you have after the first two blows, a realization that is followed by a second, more staggering realization as you watch your own phantom in motion, yes...

You are only hitting one part of the opponent.

It does not matter how you swing the sword, the method with which you do so, or even the weapon with which you do so, the only target available to you is that turtle's left arm, as if your attacks were simply drawn to it like a magnet-!

    Yes.

From the start, this Demon was one who would not ordinarily be fast enough to keep up with you, the powers it had used to do so were those that belonged to it's summoner, powers that -due to the length of their connection- she was able to call upon as if they were her own, but...

Those powers would not avail her in this instance, to truly counter this trump card, she had to go back to how she had originally fought against speedsters all those years ago, namely...

    ---By redirecting their attacks.

It is a small simple magic, ordinarily used to force others to target her, and that is exactly what is happening here...

    On a much smaller scale.

The target is her arm, nothing else is allowed while the magic persists.

She cannot read your movements anymore -she is not the original user of these eyes- but if she always knows what the target will be, then she can defend herself from all of them flawlessly.

Defend at one point, then break through in the aftermath-!

That is the power of this Demon, one who has been present at more than one "Final Battle" for humanity, but-!

---There is one flaw in that power.

Namely, while it redirects, the target must still defend against all of that damage, and...

    Again and again.

    Over and over...!

While it feels like you're ripping your own nerves out and setting every part of your body aflame, the blows that rain down on the Turtle of the Northern Sky are no joke... She had, perhaps, played around a bit too much in not raising her usual magical defenses, but-!

    Don't relent.

    Never surrender-!

She wouldn't hear the end of it back at "home" if she lost to a wet-behind-the-ears kid out here in the world, no, she had a mission to complete-!

    "Haaaaah-!"

From two sides, Spirit Power roars...

    And finally, finally...

    Something gives.

An arm, broken from the hammering of parrying countless blows.

---To a demon, it's nothing serious, even to a human nowadays it's the sort of injury that can be easily overcome with magic, however...

"Haha... Damn... Not bad at all!"

Holding her blade -still thrumming with it's own feeling of overwhelming Spiritual Power- in one hand, the girl regards the arm -which fizzles out into spiritual particles, disappearing along with the blood- with a light sense of amusement, before falling down to one knee, breathing heavy...

"Been awhile since I took a hit like that... Brings back memories I guess..."

    As for you...

"Tell you what... How about we call it a draw?"

Standing still, body aflame, COMP pushed to it's limits, and feeling heavier than it has in awhile -and with Tsukiko drawing closer to you, as if worried- you...

    Are offered something strange...

    Or rather...

Something that is difficult for you to accept...

    Hyakka Onjouji
    Seaside Motel ~ ???
    Morning (?)

The crack widens. The tiniest bit, enough to turn that sliver of light into a perceptible space. Beyond that door, it’s only barely visible, but Hyakka can see inside. Yet, her eyes aren’t turning toward what’s beyond that door. They stare in, but her thoughts are elsewhere.

    “This resistance…”

Her partner feels it too, and a shudder goes down their collective spines.

The force resisting her attempt to push the door open, the force making this single peek drag out over what feels like an eternity…

    “…Not yet.”

Is that of someone, something, beyond the door.

Separated by inches, Hyakka stares into that single eye peering from beyond the door. Behind it... is a room. One she recognizes. It’s uncanny, how much it resembles her room, as if… it is her room. Although it’s dark, she can make out the shape of her bed, her shelves, her nightstand.

And a mirror image of… herself.

They say that if one were to confront a perfect replica of their self, that is, a clone, they wouldn’t recognize it as such. Even if it were obviously their own visage staring back at them, it wouldn’t register as “them,” yet somehow, even in the darkness, with only a glance, Hyakka can see clearly that the one beyond the door… is like looking at herself in the mirror.

Before so much as a gasp can escape her lips, the door shuts, and the click of a lock tells all that no further trespassing will be allowed.

Slowly, Hyakka takes a step away from the door. The girl stares in silence at the door, mouth hung open in frozen silence.

    “Hana?”

The girl’s COMP lights up, the brooch at her chest flickering as a face appears on the surface looks upwards, and sees the sight of its partner.

The marble-like paleness of Hyakka’s complexion had somehow transformed into an even stronger form of pale, like untainted, pure snow. Her eyes were like tiny whirlpools, swirling in circles, and her mouth hung open, frozen in mid-gasp. Both of the girl’s hands reached out to grab onto something, searching for some sort of handrail to hold up, or maybe for something to hide herself behind. Whatever it was the girl was searching for with those hands, it was obvious her eyes saw nothing, yet miraculously she began to go back in the direction she had came from, toward her teacher and classmate.

“Literally blinded by the shock… I guess I would be too. At least she didn't faint again.”

“Senseeeiiiiii…….” The blind girl cried out as she slowly returned from whence she came.

Ragged breaths. My own. Body like lead. Yet, despite everything, it just isn’t enough.

Everything I had… couldn’t break her defenses. That’s the gap between my opponent and I. It pisses me off. I don’t like seeing things I can’t overcome yet.

Having things in front of you that you can’t do anything about… that’s just frustrating to no end.

I open my mouth to respond, but nothing comes out but a laboured breath. At this moment, with the severe backlash from Galeforce doubled, it’d be hard to do anything. I could swing, maybe, but I already know this fight is lost. That wound isn’t something that could have ended the fight… especially for a demon with concept manipulation.

It’s just… accepting that kind of pity doesn’t sit well with me at all…

    Ayra.

I know how you feel, but, before you say anything stupid, we never here to win in the first place.

My face flushes red. Partially from the humiliation of being offered a one sided draw, partially from the crushing embarrassment that I forgot why we were here in the first place. My weak grip on Aster tightens, sheer force putting feeling into my palm.

If it makes you feel better, I thought letting you do whatever you felt like would make it more convincing? I think it turned out fine.

    I’m gonna cry.

I can mope about this later. I’m given a chance to end it cleanly, but naturally, even if Tsukiko and I are clearly outclassed at this moment, it’s just not right to simply accept an offer from the “enemy” like that. There is a certain pride we have as Knights, and as such…

“Just go,” I force out, pointing my blade at “Joker.” “It won’t be a draw next time.”

    ??? - Noon

---An eye for an eye, an ambush for an ambush.

While things are already quickly becoming a mess due to Jack's interference, you get up off the ground after the verbal beating the small fairy had given you, and unleash your magic against your two targets while they're not really looking to continue this little brawl... Yes, while Jack had certainly come out here out of some vague sense of heroism due to your rapid descent towards villainy, the small mascot-like demon was the sort to get a bit too into his roles, into his pranks, and thus-!

    "Hee-ho?!"

The sneak attack is a complete success-!

Capturing both scientist (someone you had decided you must defeat, but who might actually be a victim here) and Jack Frost (someone who must pay for blaring his observations about you so casually) in a web of green slime, the one who seems to struggle the most out of the two, or at least is the most obviously dramatic about it, is Jack himself-!

"You hee think you can scare me ho? I ride on the motorcycle with the boss, you think you have what it takes to get in my head, hee?!"

    Defiant.

Just like you, the demon realizes it has been trapped, realizes that it actually does not have the physical strength required to free itself easily from this slime, and thus resorts to it's words once more rather than falling back on it's magic, egging you on as if he was some fearless soul-!

And indeed, this Jack Frost is a brave one...

To ride on that bike with Nadia Starr is not an easy feat, one must be willing to confront their death every time, for that girl does not truly know the meaning of slowing down to make sharp turns... That is the reality of Formula Zero Racers, they are thrill seekers to the end, adrenaline junkies that need the rush all of that speed gets them, but-!

    But-!

    But-!

Fear is not so simple a thing, at times, it is completely irrational... Jack might be willing to be Nadia's co-pilot, as a demon he might be willing to fight as a Tamer's subordinate against a number of monsters and demons, and yet-!

    And yet-!

He does have a simple fear, one that a number of humans can sympathize with, namely...

    Spiders.

Specifically, he had let out a remarkably unheroic screech the first time he had seen a Tsuchigumo out on the town... Of course, that is understandable, even in this world of coexistence, a number of people fund the Tsuchigumo unsettling, after all, they are massive spiders, a different sort of "enemy of humanity," the prickling thought that goes through one's mind when cleaning out their garage or dojo in the summer, of creeping crawling entities that awaken a primal fear within mankind, yes...

The Spider-people is a complex issue, especially since they don't really talk that much -being amongst the more animalistic demons- and more often than not, retain their ability to spark fear in humans by just going ahead and attacking and webbing up the people they come across occasionally in the woods, seemingly just because they seem to think it's funny...

    Yes.

The spider demons are a complex issue, nevertheless, history of giant demon spiders aside...

That is what you torment him with, it's little more than a shape made out of goo, but it's goo that looks remarkably sharp, and...

    "Hee... Ho?!"

...Jack has devolved into his verbal tick at the sight, or at least, that is what he does for a number of seconds before throwing away his pride entirely and playing a trump card that should not be played, a trump card that you could have perhaps seen coming, or perhaps, something you had realized but had chosen not to think about, namely...

"Boss! Boss! Help! Code Hee ho! Code Hee ho! Jackie is down! Claire's lab!"

    This little...!

...He calls out, as if confident that person could hear him, and...

In the distance, there's a sound like a door slamming open... And then...

    Footsteps...

    Fast ones, heavy, and...

As if to make matters worse...

    "...Hmmm."

...The scientist suddenly disappears from the bindings, disappears like she had never been caught in the first place, because...

    ---She hadn't been.

Your assault had triggered some sort of automatic defense system-?!

    And now-

"...Am I mistaken? Is that what the demon believes? Or is it just what you think?"

-her voice, a more serious one now...

Asks that question from behind you.

Not out of malice, but of a... Professional curiosity...

"...As for proof of my identity, the Jack Frost just vouched for me, no?"

    Claire (Wise Up)

    Perks

    -Auto Trigger-
    Cost: 2
    Restrictions: None
A new COMP sub-system that is becoming popular amongst Tamers of all factions, but one whose use can have some dangerous flaws if not thought through completely due to it’s inherently uncontrollably nature. Involves the installation of a special spell circuit and monitoring system inside of the COMP, this circuit is separate from the others, and will preload a single spell that will be set to be used automatically upon the appearance of a specific situation or trigger, without any active input necessary from the User or COMP AI.

    Exodus (Complete)

Even if the author is silenced, the performance is stilled and the actors leave the stage, the story will never truly end.

Regardless of the form it takes, as long as there are memories of it's existence, the story will continue on.

In a small ward in the heart of a once devastated town, life carries on as it always has...

    Because of you.

    Please, remember it warmly.

We'll continue to walk down this path for eternity.
