Eh, to me the best/worst that can be said about his whole ensemble is it just looks like something an unimaginative teenage boy would wear. If you think that kind of thing looks dumb then I won't argue.

I think calling Classic Shiki nondescript is an exaggeration. His design is elegant AND functional, and while you would be hard-pressed to name any aesthetic elements that truly stand out (other than the glasses), the overall package is still effective enough for him to be instantly recognizable, especially if he pulls out a knife. Other male TM leads either look dumb (Shirou, Shiki Tohno is his casual shirt) or over-designed (Sieg). Kerry doesn't look dumb or over-designed on his own, but does not make much aesthetic sense in the context of his surroundings. Seriously, show him to anyone who does not know the least thing about Fate and I'd bet a lot of people would describe him as a gangster; dude would feel right at home in a work taking place during the Prohibition.
Now, the new Shiki Tohno... that one is absolutely generic. Of all the new designs in the Tsukihime remake, I think his is the only one I'd call a true downgrade.

He spent more than a dozen years thinking about his experiences. Plus, he's "young". Of course he's be a dork who'd befriend you, make you sammiches, protect you, teach you maths, carry you on his back when dragon'd and draw you a pretty picture of Fafnir burning a gazer to scare away nightmares. He's adorable! What's there to hate?

That Kerr looks just like a villain from Durarara or Baccano is a well known fact, but at least he stands out and is recognizable without requiring knowing the character.

As weird and "Otomate bait" as Prototype was, the most unique character designs were either there or in Mahoyo. MB goes without saying.
