Not reining him in, sure, but a lot of it - the bloating of the cast and the repetitiveness of the plots come to mind - is on Kubo.
Technically it was originally supposed to go 1 arc longer than it did.
Kubo just needs to stay on character design duty. His work for Sakura Wars is pretty good.
Do you have any source for that? Because that’s directly contradicts the Can’t Fear Your Own World afterwords.
I'm pretty sure Blood War was always meant to be the last story-arc.

Per CFYOW's afterwords, Bleach was initially planned to have 6 arcs:
1) Introduction
2) Rukia's arc (Soul Society)
3) Orihime's arc (Arrancars)
4) Chad's arc (Fullbringers)
5) Ishida's arc (Quincy war)
6) Ichigo's arc (the Soul King stuff)
But since Kubo was vomiting his lungs, he had to rush the Quincy arc and cut the final arc, leaving a lot holes that would make sense once everything about the Soul King was explained (including Aizen and Ywhach's entire motivations and the pretty much the whole reason why Ichigo is the protagonist). Because of that CFYOW had to absorb all of the Soul King arc lore and shift scale from "fun spin-off about Hisagi" to "the de facto ending of Bleach".
"Bleach was accepted for publication a short time later in 2001, and was initially intended to be a shorter series, with a maximum serialization length of five years.[3] Early plans for the story did not include the hierarchical structure of the Soul Society, but did include some characters and elements that were not introduced into the plot until the Arrancar arc, such as Ichigo's Soul Reaper parentage."
It was rushed because Kubo was indeed falling apart with some sort of proto-Covid virus, but that aside, it was initially supposed to be shorter.
Not a joke.
Wikipedia outdated info is hardly the kind of evidence that refutes Comun's point.
Wikipedia's source for that links to a Los Angeles Times article, so I don't doubt it's real.
I was tempted to link it or find a Japan Times source, but I decided you'd deduce it's WP and arrive at your own conclusions.
I should also mention this was early. Like, really, really, early on. Kubo switched girls as early as Shrieker's appearance or possibly earlier. Before then, there wasn't much in the way of loose plot threads that hinted at a larger story... then they pretty much boomed, indicating that the series started to get longer afterwards.
Suffice to say, Kubo did not expect it (his previous work was even shorter lived, so it kind of makes sense) and he fell back to character creation to write the plot. However, when the series did get extended, the extension was also cut off as mentioned before, meaning he had to resort to Novels to finish the plot off and tie everything else in.
I think it's better. More condensed info means less time waiting to get five minutes worth of plot.

I didn't know Ichigo was a T-M protag :O
/strange Fake connected the Nasuverse to the Naritaverse, so Ichigo is canon.
Does FGO even have any collabs outside of Type-Moon? It seems like all the event collabs are for anime adaptations, game tie-ins, or LN's. And we still haven't even started to milk Tsuki yet.
