Thread: Matou Shinji and the Price of Victory (HP/FSN CYOA)

  1. #781
[x] The fanaticism of Albion's foes - they might be individually weak, being practitioners of witchcraft, but weak did not mean harmless. It didn't take *that* much force to kill someone, after all - just a bit properly applied.

I mean, she will have to face stuff like fiendfyre beasts, dementors, AK spell, etc... It's probably best if she is careful and prepare adequately.

Fear is also an option that could be good, but I guess that's more on the long term kind of choice.

    Choice 221:
Matou Shinji is briefed on this new background for Rin, as well as on the specifications of the glide cloak that she designed while going through that bit of simulated time.

What is the general shape of his thoughts regarding the person she became without his influence?

[ ] Satisfaction - he knew she had the potential for greatness, and he's glad she's finally applying herself
[ ] Wariness - he needed to be careful that any of his feelings about the prior Rin didn't bleed through to the current iteration, as this is a stranger to him
[ ] Jealousy - he needed so many lucky breaks, and so many unlikely opportunities to get to where he was, and all of this is just handed to her?
[ ] Apathy - he doesn't care. He has bigger things to worry about.

Choice 222: Still, the glide cloak she designed seems like it could have interesting applications, so he...

[ ] Waits to see how she uses it in combat
[ ] Makes a note to have LeShin look into making something like it
-[ ] Working with Tohsaka in a collaboration
-[ ] Without her help - now that he knows it is possible to make such a thing, he's sure that Toroi can duplicate its effects
[ ] Sends Luna a copy of the dossier and specifications - given that she's running a company, she might appreciate a good employee (and Tohsaka, if she was anything like the old one, always needed money)
[ ] Requisitions glide cloaks for the squad as a whole (will take up Rin's crafting time to produce)
    [ ] (write-in)

Choice 223: As Tohsaka wishes to become more familiar with the wizarding world and their foes, he will..

[ ] Assign Draco to help her - he is, after all, the son of the enemy leader and a British native
[ ] Assign Andreas to help her - what is an XO for?
[ ] Handle it himself as Squad Leader
[ ] Have Emilia help her, since the tanuki has learned about its strengths and weaknesses as an outsider
[ ] Have her work on this together with Luvia, since they both need to know

[X] Satisfaction - he knew she had the potential for greatness, and he's glad she's finally applying herself

Its the most positive of the choices we have. Wariness works for me as well. But really Shinji should just be happy that Rin is finally what he always saw in her.

[X] Makes a note to have LeShin look into making something like it
-[X] Working with Tohsaka in a collaboration

Other options work but this I think is a good way for the two to learn to work together and could benefit the both of them. The Luna option I will wait on until Rin can prove she is worth a contract with, but I still plan on this happing down the road. Requisition glide cloaks is not a bad idea but I think we need to first field test and improve the design before we make a production model for the squad. But if people want go with it cause the Squad could be the field test for later improvements.

[X] Have Emilia help her, since the tanuki has learned about its strengths and weaknesses as an outsider

In my opinion you need someone that both has experience with wizard world and has an idea of where Rin is coming from. So experience with moonlit world or other non-human wizard thinking is a plus.

Of the options given, Draco and Andreas while good at knowing the ins and outs of the wizard world, don't met my last requirement from above. So they are out. Luvia does not met the first requirement of knowing the wizard world but Rin and Luvia together should do a fairly good job figuring it out but I think they should at least have someone to guide them.

Which leaves me to what I consider are our best options. Shinji or Emilia. Both have merits and downsides. Shinji's time is fairly busy with his squad leadership position and getting himself back into shape. Emilia while not perfect has a fairly good handle in Albion, the enemy as well as what Rin can do. I trust her to be professional.

Before judging what to do with it, it's best to see how it performs first.

[x] Assign Andreas to help her - what is an XO for?

Well, Shinji needs to learn to delegate I guess.

I think it would be fine to have Andreas introduce her into wizarding 101. He was a student (military) leader in his own regards at Durmstrang and likely has prior experience in dealing with newbies to the wizarding world.

I would be fine with Draco as well, yes.

The others not so much, Luvia is obviously calling for a disaster to happen, Emilia will hit on her hard, likely making things harder to take seriously and Shinji is obviously in a grayish area at that point.

Choice 224: There's also the matter of Tohsaka's drug habit. They do seem rather useful...

[ ] Rin can do whatever she wants with her body, but the rest of the squad should be drug-free
[ ] Have Rin share with the human/wizard members of the squad
[ ] Work with her to see what potential there is for potion/drug interaction

[ ] Leave him to his own devices
[ ] Ask him to handle squad training (general)
[ ] Have him train the squad in (write-in topic)
[ ] Have him train a specific person

[x] Make sure her decoctions are safe for the squad member's different physiology - as not every species (wizard, goblin, tanuki, tree-spirit, magus and w/e Shinji is now) would react in the same manner - before thinking of sharing it or not.

The first choice, because we don't want squad members disabled by their own items during missions, especially in situations where they would have to rely on the extra drugs for success. It may look like an extra step, but it's a vital one considering composition of the squad.

Andreas supervising the daily routine (drilling the basics) is exactly what he would excel at.

I don't think the Rin-Shinji working together complaints is altogether valid as this Rin is not attracted to Shinji given his golem status. And Shinji I think we should give some credit to that he can stay professional for five minutes. But sure might as well have the drug be tested before we roll it out. But given that we don't have the resources to do a double-blind test here to study the effects of the drug on various races, I think what you are really voting for is to test it on the squad and note the effects. Which is just a vote saying Yes Rin drug our team but do it slowly.

[X] Trade in the thermos, to get Rin the Customized Workstation

No one mentioned that first part but to get the three points to spend on the Workstation, we had to trade the thermos in. So I am at least going to mention that in the vote.

[x] Have him train the squad in team building exercises to build team coordination

Ok this one I feel strongly on. Generic exercises are fine and all but Andresa knowledge should be at least directed here. Its not like Andresa can teach half the team spells. Nor does half the team need weapon training. If you want Andresa to train the weak spots of each person in the squad then say so.

In this case, I am going with the thing that the entire team needs training in, How to work as a group. Most of this team has never did squad sized operations before, nor do they know what the others can do. So we need to focus on that first. Even the parts of this team that do know how to be in a squad and work as a team to complete objectives have not worked with a group beyond their racial/skillset lines.

EDIT: Fair points made about the generic training. Ok, I am cool enough with it so I will switch my last vote to

[x] Ask him to handle squad training (general)

I apparently forgot that you'd all already traded in the Thermos earlier, but I'll let you have the workstation anyway. It will be shared with the rest of the squad so they can do their maintenance

Soon enough, negotiations between Leonard Spencer-Moon of the ICW's Security Directorate and Gilderoy Lockhart, First Citizen of Albion, finish up, and with it, travel resumes in some limited capacity between the Scandanavian nations and Albion. Of course, as part of the final agreement, Lockhart agrees not to simply conscript students returning home - and further agrees that any former student who signs up has to have passed their O.W.L. exams (or to sit - and pass - an ICW administered equivalent before their recruitment is finalized). This is fine for Matou Shinji, of course, who has certifications from the Centre of Alchemical Studies, as well as the MACUSA, attesting to his competence as a wizard, and for a number of the older students interested in serving - like George Weasley. Others wanted no part in a war anyway, no matter how "civil", but appreciated having the option to go home without being conscripted if they did - at least by Albion, since the Ministry made no such guarantees.

For the younger ones who were interested in volunteering for Albion's cause, however - most of them individuals who had once been Ourea, such as Draco Malfoy, Ron Weasley, and Pansy Parkinson, Lockhart's apprentice, this stipulation was a bit more troublesome, since they had not sat the exam yet. As such, before being able to serve in the Albion army (or Homeguard), they would need to take their tests, which of course, meant some delays in constituting the other Home Guard squads, unless these were to be all-goblin units.

...or would have, anyway, had Lockhart, not seeing that as a politically viable option, not had Tomas do some shuffling to cover the gaps, as well as hiring members of the graduating class of Durmstrang to fill in any gaps.

Thus, the leader of 2nd Squad would not be Pansy (at least, not immediately), but Sylvana Terum, former Commander of the Banner of Wolves at Durmstrang, while George Weasley, originally slated for special assignment, would be heading up the third, with all of them leading a mixed group of wizards, goblins, and...various mercenaries.

Andreas took the news of Sylvana holding superior rank to him with good humor, noting that she would certainly be qualified to jump into leading a squad, while he preferred a bit more time getting the lay of the land, so to speak. The Banner of the Raven was one that was good at making various manipulations and exploiting information for the maximum benefit - but by the same token, member of that Banner tended to prefer having some time to gather said data and familiarize themselves with the context in which they operated.

And since Shinji was the person who had the most context for what to expect from Albion, the Ministry, his assignment in the Home guard, and other such - including the capabilities of the other members of the squad (since Shinji had hired them and worked alongside them), Andreas turned to him for this critical information.

Choice 227: What does Shinji tell Andreas about his own capabilities?

[ ] Everything - including his nature as a "construct"
[ ] Mention his partial memory loss and emotional issues due to injuries sustained on the island
[ ] Mention that he currently lacks access to his old trump card (fusion), and is working around this disability
[ ] Mention that the rumors are true - he defeated the mercenary army that attacked the Ministry singlehandedly
[ ] Say that nothing has changed since they last saw each other

Choice 228: What does Shinji have to say about the members of his squad from the Moonlit World?

[ ] Be as accurate as he can about Luvia and Rin's background, and mention the context of the Tower and the Association
[ ] Give a vague explanation that omits the politics involved - this isn't something he needs to know
[ ] Say they're mercenaries, but that he is not completely aware of their abilities and history (don't explain magi)
[ ] Say that they are magi from London - and likely observers from the Association (explaining what the Association is)
    [ ] (write-in)

Choice 229: What does Shinji have to say about Emilia?

[ ] Tell him she is an infiltration specialist, but leave her abilities in the air
[ ] Tell him she is a metamorphmagus - its a decent way to explain what she can do. Kind of.
[ ] Mention that she is a Tanuki, and explain what they are and what their capabilities are
    [ ] (write-in)

Choice 230: What does Shinji have to say about Nines?

[ ] Go with the cover story
    [ ] Tell the truth
[ ] Come up with something else (write-in)

Choice 231: What does Shinji have to say about the goblins?

    [ ] (write-in)

Choice 232: Why did he choose to recruit Draco, knowing that the boy is the son of the leader of Albion's enemy?

[ ] Because this gives him a certain amount of insurance against Lucius
[ ] Because Draco has talents that could be useful, regardless of heritage
[ ] Because someone he trusts found Draco reliable
    [ ] (write-in)

Choice 233: And finally, what are Shinji's thoughts on Albion?

[ ] A worthy cause - Britain must be free of the tyranny of the Ministry
[ ] A good employer - at least, he trusts the man behind it
[ ] A good place to hone his abilities
    [ ] (write-in)

[X] Everything - including his nature as a "construct"

As our second in command, Andresa has a right to information so that he can help lead this squad, especially given that Andresa has to make command decisions particularly when Shinji is disable or the squad is separated in smaller units. Also important to point out that Andresa was on the island and has seen a lot of the changes with Shinji and has access to other champions on the island, especially Remona. You really can not BS Andresa about Shinji and have it go well. Just tell him the full truth. End stop.

[X] Officially - they are mercenaries. Unofficially - they are Observers from two rival noble bloodlines of a magical collection of non-wand users that stayed within the muggle world instead of joining the wizard world. Shinji can not say much on this subject without their agreement as the Noble families are very touchy about their secrets (Killing is not taboo to achieve this) especially against other families and outsiders. Explain they are in this squad because of Shinji's...family was one of them but due to fate, Shinji inherited his mother's witchcraft instead of his family magic and was sent to the wizard world.

Its a bit long but there are a lot of angles to cover if you are not doing a TELL ALL. This gives Andresa our second, enough for him to understand just what is at stake and why none of this is to be shared and is considered highly classified. We don't really give him a run down on what a Magus can do but that stuff Andresa will learn in training them and in the field. This explanation will just make him more observant.

[x] Mention that she is a Tanuki, and explain what they are and what their capabilities are

Again, he is our second in command he needs to know this stuff. I don't think that Emilia wants to broadcast her abilities (after all they work better when people are not aware of them) but she understands that leadership needs to know. Now I suspect it would be a bad idea to tell him about her antics within Durmstrange that we knew about but did not inform anyone at the school, even if we did deal with it.

[X] Tell the truth about Nines

Pains me somewhat to tell the truth here as it very much telling the sham/secrets of Shinji to Andresa that we have guarded for so long. But I can't say that Shinji or Zelkova would be good at fooling Andresa for long with this Nines. Best to come clean so that Andresa can help Zelkova with his cover and adjust to being human. We should allow for Zelkova to experience life as a human without everyone knowing what he is but this is a case that I think we should inform someone.

[X] Goblins is a sensitive subject within Britain politics and Goblins have been treated unfairly and horribly by the Ministry for generations, leading to many armed conflicts with the two. Albion is a new chance for Goblins to be equal in society and respected including the right to have wands that has been stripped from them. However government policy does not change hearts and minds so biases still exist on both sides and part of our unofficial role as a mixed unit is to be the positive example of unity and cooperation to win over hearts and minds. Treat goblins with respect as you would anyone else but do not make promises that you are not willing to keep to the end of time as the goblins refer to Wizards as Oath Breakers.

Again long. But for someone that not familiar to British-goblins politics, this has to be fairly long. I tried to stay within the knowledge that Shinji might understand.

[X] Because Shinji understands what its like to be judged based on your last name verses who you really are as well as the difficulties of making a stand against your family for your convictions. In the end, Draco's last name doesn't determine who he is, yet for the world he lives in, they treat him like it means everything.

Yeah I made this personal for Shinji. It fits rather well I think with my Moonlit world disclosure write in. Without that write in, I would not pick this current write in. I can't help but feel that Shinji picked Draco not because of using him but because Shinji can feel akin to the position Draco is in. Someone that standing against his patriarch, no matter the cost cause of their own convinctions. Daco having useful ability or being a useful pawn on the chess board are all secondary in my opinion.

[X] A worthy dream that worth fighting for. A more equal society that treats people fairly regardless of race, background or lineage. A tall order given the history of Britain, but Shinji trusts that if anyone can achieve this, he can. Lockhart and Albion have been a calming force for the public after months and months of the Ministry drumming up paranoia and suspicion against anyone not a 'loyal' British wizard. Which did not help calm the people down after suffering two deadly attacks within a year and the people are scared.

Ok I admit this last write in is cheating as its just ALL OF THE ABOVE option. But all of them are valid I think to Shinji, he can value turning Britain into a better society that closer to what he seen Japan be. That Shinji also believes and trusts Lockhart at this point but that Shinji is not just some firm activist loyalist of Lockhart that Shinji is also being a bit mercenary in all of this. Something I think Andresa will value. A worthy cause that we personally benefit from. Best of both worlds.

[x] Everything - including his nature as a "construct".

I assume Shinji will only mention stuff that happened since they haven't seen each other?
Just be honest on this. He should as much as possible as about his superior and fellow leader. If anything happens to Shinji, it's Andreas who is supposed to take charge and having him "in the know" can only help in covering up or supporting wakame.

[x] Officially - they are mercenaries. Unofficially - they are Observers from two rival noble bloodlines of a magical collection of non-wand users that stayed within the muggle world instead of joining the wizard world. Keeping up the masquerade is a matter of survival, pure and simple.
We don't need more people seeking Shinji's death - or cause political drama down the line between Atlas and the Clock Tower.
If the girls wanna share, well they will.

[x] Tell Andreas what he knows of Emilia's skills and personality - but nothing about her background, their past encounter and fight in the North, nor her true identity. He thinks that if Emilia decides to share, it should come from herself.

Pretty much the same as for the magi girls, there's no need to mention more than is needed here. If the tanuki wanna share, she will, otherwise it's not really our place to speak.

    [x] Tell the Truth

Well, it's hard to tell the story of Shinji on the isle without mentioning Zelkova, who pretty much kept Shinji alive as much as his partners there. Besides, I think it's good to for Andreas who works with information gathering to know how good a scout / detector Nines could be

[x] Goblins is a sensitive subject within Britain politics and Goblins have been treated unfairly and horribly by the Ministry for generations, leading to many armed conflicts with the two. I like that one, it's long, but it conveys the fact that goblins' issues are complex and deep-rooted.

[x] Because Shinji understands what its like to be judged based on your last name verses who you really are as well as the difficulties of making a stand against your family for your convictions. In the end, Draco's last name doesn't determine who he is, yet for the world he lives in, they treat him like it means everything.

I like this, especially after Draco had his event trigger at the hospital.

    [x]
Because Shinji understands what its like to be judged based on your last name verses who you really are as well as the difficulties of making a stand against your family for your convictions. In the end, Draco's last name doesn't determine who he is, yet for the world he lives in, they treat him like it means everything.

    [x]
A worthy dream that worth fighting for.

Choice 227: [x] Everything - including his nature as a "construct".

    Choice 228:
[x] Officially - they are mercenaries. Unofficially - they are Observers from two rival noble bloodlines of a magical collection of non-wand users that stayed within the muggle world instead of joining the wizard world. Shinji can not say much on this subject without their agreement as the Noble families are very touchy about their secrets (Killing is not taboo to achieve this) especially against other families and outsiders. Explain they are in this squad because of Shinji's...family was one of them but due to fate, Shinji inherited his mother's witchcraft instead of his family magic and was sent to the wizard world.

    Choice 229:
[x] Tell Andreas what he knows of Emilia's skills and personality - but nothing about her background, their past encounter and fight in the North, nor her true identity. He thinks that if Emilia decides to share, it should come from herself.

    Choice 234: Andreas nods.

"Thank you for the information - especially for trusting me with your background, as well providing some context about the situation with the goblins and the other members of the squad," he says solemnly. "For my part, I have to admit that I am not completely unfamiliar with the Edelfelts - anyone interested in the mercenary scene has certainly heard of them. The Hyenas of the Battlefield are rather notorious for their viciousness and efficiency, after all - though I admit to not knowing much about the current heiress to the line. It will be interesting to work with one and see if she lives up to the family's reputation."

    He made a considering hum.

"All in all, you seem to have selected a rather combat-focused squad, Mister Malfoy and myself aside. Even then infiltration specialist is apparently quite a heavy hitter - which leads me to wonder why you picked me as your second in command, as opposed to someone else."

    How does Shinji answer?

[ ] He respects Andreas' leadership style and wanted to learn from him
[ ] He wanted to balance out the squad
[ ] He didn't really have other options
    [ ] (write-in)

    Choice 235
: "There was one other thing I wanted to ask about. As part of my benefits package as an officer in the Home Guard, I am entitled to attend classes offered by the Albion Military Academy during my free time, with the current offerings being the Art of Movement, Shamanism, Ofuda 101, Reinforcement, Advanced Dueling, and Tactical Thinking. I consider myself a fair hand at tactical thinking, given my training at Durmstrang, and a decent enough duelist - even if I am not at the level of Sylvana, but the others sound rather intriguing. Do you have a recommendation?"

    Which do you recommend?

    [ ] Art of Movement
    [ ] Shamanism
    [ ] Ofuda 101
    [ ] Reinforcement

    And why?

    [ ] (write-in)

    - such that it is. Since you have had quite a bit of exposure to "

[X] He respects Andreas' leadership style and wanted to learn from him

There is a bit more to that in my head but that is the short answer. Boils down to Shinji knows he is a Maverick and needs someone that more grounded and levelheaded to help him lead a group of highly specialized combat team that full of egos.

    [X] Shamanism
[X] Depends on the role Andresa wants to play in the squad, as Reinforcement or Art of Movement would boost his fighting ability directly but the squad has that role covered fairly well. Ofuda 101 given that both Shinji and Nines has knowledge in can be learned within the squad if he wishes to shares skill training. Where as Shamanism, the squad does not have a practitioner, yet has proven to be a very useful skillset based on what he seen on the Island with Remona. The ability to control your environment, call forth the powers of sprites to empower yourself and gather information by communicating with sprites. Its art seems the most Raven Banner method of the options given.

The above basically gives my reasoning for my pick. I wanted to give Andresa the logic behind whatever choice he picks. We can recommend a class but really he wants the LOGIC behind our pick. For that reason I can't pick Ofuda. And Art of Movement and Reinforcement is only if he wants to be better direct combat skills.
