Thread: A Chain of Debt (A Matou Shinji AU Quest)

[X] Nothing - a fortune built on sacrifice is meaningless

He has to risk everything but a gambler only risks what he can afford to lose. To actually lose it all just to gain wealth, has no point. The money is just the way to keep score.

Plus we don't plan to lose it all or to risk everything, we plan to STACK the deck and change Fate to our favor, the smart gambler risks only what he knows he will not lose.

    So that is my answer.

"Is that so? Are you that confident in your skills, I wonder, or merely ignorant of how the world works? After all, one cannot get something for nothing - there is always a price, even if it is the time spent asking," the Hat noted. "One final question then, as we come to the end of our exchange. Imagine that you - and the rest of humanity - have been fighting against constructs of unimaginable power seeking to harvest humanity's knowledge and preserve it before it inevitably destroys itself. These relics of a past civilization contain the knowledge of countless aeons, and civilizations, and have never failed to reap that which they sought. Indeed, all who have stood against them, contending with them power to power have been defeated, even their own creators. Yet every system has a weakness, and after many sacrifices from many, many people, you have managed to reach the heart of the constructs' power - the citadel that protects the guiding intelligence that gives them purpose.

At the cost of your life, you may deploy a potent ritual that will allow you to end the conflict in one fell swoop -
but how will you end it?
    Will you...

[ ] Destroy the constructs and the intelligence guiding them to put an end to the threat they pose once and for all, at the cost of destroying civilization as you know it
[ ] Control the constructs by overwriting the guiding intelligence with your mind and soul, as with the power of the constructs in your hands, you could usher in a new age
[ ] Synthesize the knowledge and will of the constructs with that of humanity, creating a new civilization that collaboratively the knowledge of the past into the future
[ ] Refuse to choose, as surely another way can be found

"I see," the Hat noted. "Well, I have very little doubt about the House you belong in now, Mister Matou. After all, with your insatiable lust for financial dominion, and your desire to always be in control, it has to be SLYTHERIN!"

For reference, the purple-haired girl - a certain Miss Sokaris - as well as the bespectacled blonde she was with were sorted into Ravenclaw.

Amber Noel came over to Slytherin, while her brother went to Gryffindor.

The Japanese girl among the first years, Natsumi Suzuki, went to Hufflepuff.

Miss Spencer was sorted into Ravenclaw.

And of course Mister Weasley, he of the loose Niffler, was sorted into Slytherin.

What topic will Shinji focus on most?

    [x] History

History it is, under Leonardo de Lune, a kindly old man who is taking over from Professor Binns for a year, who is particularly popular at the moment due to the announcement he made at the Welcome Feast. That is, to ensure that people took an interest in such a vital topic, he would be awarding one student from each year with a fully funded year abroad, with tuition, housing, even a rather generous stipend. How he would choose students was a topic of some debate, but already people were thinking that he had to be well-connected, or extremely rich, or both.

In any case, on hearing of the stipend, Shinji perked up, resolving that he would be the one to win the prize, whatever it took, clenching his fists as he did. For a moment, he thought he felt someone looking at him, and look up in the general direction towards the Ravenclaws, but he didn't see anyone actually looking, even if Ana in about the right spot to have been looking. Or was it perhaps the purple-haired girl who reminded him of...something.

Aside from the main classes though, there were the "secondary" classes - things like Astronomy, Flying, or Magical Theory

Which of these does he consider most important?

    [ ] Astronomy
    [ ] Flying
    [ ] Magical Theory

And then, there are the other things he could be spending time on - things outside of class and its required work. Which two of these are his top priorities for his free time?

    [ ] Martial Arts
    [ ] Legilimency studies
[ ] Studying the Magic of Numbers
[ ] Getting better at Cards
[ ] Studying the Invisibility tome, provided he can make it visible

History is a go. Could be worse.

    [x] Magical Theory

That's even an option? Neat. Let's see how our Magical Numbers will help us here.

[x] Studying the Invisibility tome, provided he can make it visible
[x] Studying the Magic of Numbers

This is a tough one. We need something to ensure our long term growth - meaning, working on our foundations of our yet-to-be-determined build - and to enforce our image in the House of Snakes. Whether we want it or not, the latter will be an issue, and we lack the edge of Mysterious Boy from the East we enjoyed in the past. Now we are virtually powerless, and that needs to change, - otherwise our build up will be colored by social stigma.

That's why I chose to experiment with the hinted synergy of Magical Numbers and Magical Theory here, pushing outward our desire for unconventional power. That, combined with some insights on behavior from Invisible book, may let us pull through here.

Or it may not, and everything will explode in flames of Great Prank War spectacularly! Now that's an entertaining thought.

Start training body so he won't be the same as normal squishy wizards.Working out also provide increase in physical stats and help him get rid of stress due to troublesome roommates. It is best to start building foundation early and to make it a routine.
We should start looking for ways to open tome to unlock the knowledge needed to study the craft of thief/assassin.

The announcement, once made, could not be revoked, and so Matou Shinji found himself walking over to the table draped in green, where the older students welcomed him, though he couldn't say he felt entirely pleased at the attention. It wasn't like they knew him, or truly appreciated what he could bring to their side - they just liked the fact that he was another warm body who had been sorted into their house by a Hat which liked to ask strange questions.

Still, he couldn't just brush them off completely, if these were the...people he'd be living with for the next few years. He dearly - dearly hoped there wouldn't be any nonsense about large communal rooms filled with dozens of students, because that was probably the one thing that would drive him mad. It was one thing to deal with the barbaric English tongue after he was awake and alert, another to hear dozens of foreigners babble about inane topics when all he wanted to do was sleep.

'Maybe I'll just have a roommate.'

He could tolerate sharing a room with another person. Just not dozens of their ilk, though...

'Well, if they put me in a room with all those people, I will rob them blind.'

Figuratively speaking, anyway. He had his cards, and some of the people at the table, like that Malfoy boy, seemed to be rather well off, if the way he carried himself and the fine cut of his robes was any indication. The Granger girl - the one he'd originally thought of as Malfoy's lover - seemed not quite as good at match, on closer inspection, as she seemed a bit more hesitant, more...uncertain about her place.

'Foolish. If you want others to believe you belong, the first thing you must do is believe it yourself - or at least act like it. Act like it well enough to fool everyone, even yourself.'

Of course, having an ally, a co-conspirator, helped with such trickery considerably, and so the boy was relatively pleased to see the coppery-haired Amber Noel be sorted into Slytherin as well, as he thought he hadn't left an entirely terrible impression on the girl.

"It seems we meet again, Mister Matou," the girl murmured as she slipped into the seat next to him, with the Malfoy boy's attention drawn to the new arrival, something that displeased his bushy-haired companion, by the look of it.

"A pleasure, I'm sure," Shinji replied shortly.

"For you, perhaps," Amber quipped, before turning her attention to the others, making introductions so easily that Shinji almost - almost - felt a hint of envy.

In the common room that night, a few of the Professors - Slytherin alumni - are present at something like a small reception. This, according to Professor Slughorn, is something the Slytherins do every year, so that the newcomers can mingle with faculty and students, and get some questions answered. They have a reputation of always looking sharp and being on top of things - even on the very first day of classes and it would be a shame to break such a longstanding tradition.

Who does Shinji wish to prioritize speaking to? (choose up to two)

    [ ] Professor Slughorn
[ ] Lord and Lady Black
    [ ] The Prefects
[ ] Students like Draco and his...whatever she is
[ ] Amber, whose company he at least finds tolerable
[ ] No one. He is going to just go to his room and read before bed.

    [x] The Prefects

The former so that we get a lay of the land and the true power of the house. Might as well talk to them to learn who they are so we can avoid them better when we going sneaking around. The later because might as well start casing the easy mark, and maybe if you extend some early branch to Hermione she might be more tolerable.

The teachers I imagine will be swarmed with Slytherins trying to kiss butt to them. And since we don't really have anything to offer Slughorn yet, I will cross him off the list. Amber we already know and likely can talk to during a meal or partner in class.
