A Chain of Debt (A Matou Shinji AU Quest)

Matou Shinji and the Chains of Debt (A Matou Shinji AU Quest)

A/N: In this Quest - for a quest it is, not a CYOA adventure, because I need something that won't require hours and hours of my time putting together massive chapters (this is not getting chapters on FF.net), we go back to the first year, using the basics of the Peerless Alchemist setting (which itself is a variant of BFAS where Snape doesn't commit suicide), and importing the Hermione of Peerless Alchemist.

This is another variation on the Matou Shinji theme, exploring what would have happened had Matou Shinji not sought the support of the family that had thrown him away, but had turned instead to Tohsaka Rin, the Second Owner of Fuyuki, asking her for a loan of 1 MILLION YEN (about $10,000 US, or 1000 Galleons). Her price - his servitude for the summer, to prove that he is serious about wanting the money, as well as a contract to repay 10 MILLION YEN in ten years time, or be bound for ten years of servitude for every million he falls short.

It was perhaps not the best deal in the history of the world, but given that he was but a boy with nothing to his name except the clothes on his back, he accepted that this was the best offer he was going to get and signed the contract she proposed.

Sadly for the boy, once Matou Zouken heard about this latest bit of foolishness, the patriarch went about removing the boy from the family registry, effectively disowning him, thus leaving Shinji with no choice but to move in with Tohsaka for the summer as her live in help.

Over the course of the summer, the boy learned that living with a girl...was about as icky and uncomfortable as that Ryuudou boy always said it would be, and that Tohsaka could most certainly be a...witch, and not the magical kind who made potions. He had once idolized her, true, but in his months in her house, he'd learned four very important things about her:

    1) Tohsaka Rin was a massive slob (or at least was deliberately making more work for him to do)
    2) Tohsaka Rin was very, very grouchy in the morning, and wasn't functional without coffee
    3) Tohsaka Rin packed a hell of a punch, and tended to use him as a training dummy
    4) Tohsaka Rin liked to seem flawless to the rest of the world, but she was often careless when it counted

Four, did he say? No - five, with the fifth being that she had an insanely high spice tolerance, no doubt acquired from the takeout that her guardian, the priest, rewarded her with now and again. (This had proved an excellent incentive to learn the basics of cooking, as the choice between starvation and ingesting something that would melt his innards and burn just as much going out as it had going was...not a pleasant one).

    Choose one Skill to Gain:
[ ] Cooking (Basic): Can make a decent cup of coffee, and prepare a basic meal (with a bonus to...tofu dishes)
[ ] Efficient Cleaning: Being able to clean up messes more efficiently
[ ] Martial Arts (Taking a hit): Knowing how to take a hit/fall in a way that minimized injury - earned from being Tohsaka's punching bag
[ ] Basic Physical Therapy: Giving massages and backrubs that help relieve muscle soreness

Still, he had to admit that Tohsaka wasn't entirely terrible, as she had asked Kotomine to provide some clothing for the...orphan, and the man had done so, giving him some items from his childhood, and some that had been donated for the church out of what he called Christian Charity.

[Acquired: 3x Acolyte Cassocks, 4x Black Robes, various shirts/slacks/coats - mix of new and lightly used]

...yes, charity, and all it cost him was time. Time spent attending Mass on Saturday evenings. Time spent studying a religious text he had no use for. Time spent in lessons on how all were doomed to the fires to hell, unless they repented from their lives of sin and gave up the false idols they worshipped - idols like power, the pleasures of the flesh, wealth, or more.

...oh, and time spent sweeping and cleaning up the church, out of...gratitude.

(It wasn't a wonderful use of his time, but appearances had to be kept up, and this was something Rin would have to help with otherwise, so it wasn't surprising she dumped the responsibilities on him).

But eventually the summer was over, and the boy found himself accompanying the priest on a trip to Europe...a trip on which...disaster struck. Apparently, one of the other passengers on board had been a rogue magus who had sought to become immortal, with...interesting results for his self-control. Sadly, the presence of the priest spooked the magus, leading a fight that ended the lives of many of those on the plane, with Shinji seeing for the first time just how dangerous an Executor of the Church could be, even if the man said he was "retired" or some nonsense like that.

    [Acquired: 1x Black Key]

After that though, the boy finally made it to London, where he...

[ ] Followed instructions to go to Diagon Alley
[ ] Was met by Lord Black
[ ] Was met by Filius Flitwick
[ ] Was accompanied by Leonard Spencer-Moon and his grand-daughter, who had been on his plane from Rome

    I have no idea what's going on but;

[x] Cooking (Basic): Can make a decent cup of coffee, and prepare a basic meal (with a bonus to...tofu dishes)
[x] Was accompanied by Leonard Spencer-Moon and his grand-daughter, who had been on his plane from Rome
    .

Starting with a human level of cooking, such a blasphemy! (I'm going for it, don't try to stop me, guys!)

    Meeting Lily early, why not.

A Priest route! Yeah, a Dark Priest is a Priest too. Healing is fun, amirite?
One of this days. Wait for me, vampirism...

In the course of Shinji's...time working as Rin's...assistant (or rather, her punching bag and source of stress relief - he picked up two skills, both of which were essential in helping him remain functional after a particularly painful training session.

[x] Martial Arts (Taking a hit): Knowing how to take a hit/fall in a way that minimized injury - earned from being Tohsaka's punching bag
[X] Basic Physical Therapy: Giving massages that help relieve muscle soreness

Training the body was as important for a magus as training the mind or one's spell-casting abilities, and since he couldn't do either of the latter two, he figured that he would at least try to hold on when being pummeled by a frustrated Tohsaka. And after a while he'd learned just how to do so - how to hold his body and tighten his muscles so the blows hurt less, how to move with a blow to minimize the force of impact, and more.

Perhaps he should have spent that time practicing English instead though, given that the boy found himself fairly disoriented as he made his way through the streets of London after getting off of the Tube at Charring Cross station.

    'The Leaky Cauldron, was it...?'
he wondered, looking about for where the pub could be, only to walk past it several times, given that he hadn't expected it to be such a shabby establishment. Eventually though, he picked out the right building and made his way inside, asking the bartender about how to get to Diagon Alley in rather rusty, accented English.

Still, he got his point across well enough, so the man let him in.

'I'll have to exchange my money, I suppose, unless they take English pounds...'

Tohsaka had been kind enough to give him half of his money in pounds, as he'd mentioned he'd be going to Britain, so he supposed that perhaps he wasn't completely out of luck.

What does he do at the bank?

[ ] Convert all of his British pounds into wizarding money (500 Galleons)
[ ] Convert half of it (250 Galleons)
    [ ] Convert some smaller portion (write-in)

And with his money, will he try to buy everything new, as no doubt people will judge him by the quality of his possessions? Or should he get used goods, to save himself some cash

    [ ] New Goods (100 Galleons)
    [ ] Used Goods (57 Galleons)

And, on top of his normal/required supplies, does Shinji choose to buy something else?

    [ ] A pet/familiar
    [ ] A book
[ ] Some candy - something to bribe children with
[ ] Some tea - gifts for his professors
[ ] An enchanted quill of some kind

    More options, more of them!

    [x] New Goods (100 Galleons)

57 gold for used stuff, really? Saving on this choice is not worth it then.

    [x] A pet/familiar
    [x] A book

    No social required, thx.

Something tells me that going into Slythereen with an intent to ignore people in favor of powergaming promises hardship.

Dark and Mysterious Master of Eastern Arts Mk.2 is a go.

    Edit

With some pondering and sinister whispers from Daiki, I've managed to convince myself that having cronies is a worthy goal. So let's spend some more on the investment.

The bribe options so we can instantly alienate Gryffindors and outmalfoy Draco. The earlier you place yourself in a position of influence, the better.

Used robes not even half off no point of getting them. As long as tea leaves not that expensive why not try to score some points.

At the bank, Matou Shinji wavered for a moment when asked how many British pounds he wanted to convert into wizarding currency. If he converted it all, he wouldn't be able to do much in Muggle London without going to a currency exchange counter or bank, and he'd heard...stories of usurious and moneygrubbing merchants and moneychangers in the west could be (though it was mostly from Tohsaka, so he wasn't sure how accurate the stories were).

[x] Convert all of his British pounds into wizarding money (500 Galleons)

With a bag of literal gold coins figuratively burning a hole in his pocket, Matou Shinji went shopping, deciding to pick out only the finest of choices for the garments and items on his school supply list. Yes, it consumed a fairly hefty portion of the currency he had just exchanged, but it was worth it...wasn't it? After all, it wouldn't do to look like a beggar who had just stumped in off the street. First impressions were, well, maybe not everything, but pretty damn close.

    [x] New Goods (100 Galleons)

That said, no matter how good his basic items were, he wouldn't be able to make that much of an impression on the rest of the...impressionable rabble without bringing something else to the table. Some extras - perhaps a bit of knowledge that others wouldn't have? An exotic pet? Something else?

No...perhaps, that's right - all of the above. He had money, and money was made to be spent! If there was anything he'd learned from Tohsaka, it was that.

Extras: [x] A pet/familiar; [x] A book; [x]An enchanted quill of some kind; [x]Some tea - gifts for his professors

The only question was - what - and how much would he buy?

    Common Toad (5 Galleons)
    Exotic Toad (9 Galleons)
    Black Cat (9 Galleons)
    Siamese Cat (11 Galleons)

    Owl (12 galleons)
    Raven (11 galleons)
    Giant Purple Toad (15 Galleons)
Mystery option [Could be a Kneazle, could be a Niffler, could be something much more exotic...or much more mundane] (5 Galleons, may be taken multiple times - or "until you get what you want"; 10 roll option available)

Gacha prizes: (may be bought outright)
    Diricrawl - 50 Galleons
    Augury - 500 Galleons

    Books:

Living With Legilimens: Choose Your Minds Wisely (7 galleons)

First book because we need to blend in as someone respectable and of a decent lineage.
Second book because I just want something different.
Third just because manipulative route sounds fun.

    Quills:
    Self-Writing Quill (10 Galleons) x2

Only plebs write themselves. A second quill in case we damage / lose the first one.

    Tea:
Porcelain tea set w/self-heating pot (25 Galleons)
Set of tea leaves (25 Galleons)
    Neverending Tea Thermos (15 Galleons)

Shinji learned how to cook and serve tea, so it's good to have a full service which he can use to enhance his brewing skills.
Quality leaves for quality time with the few who deserve it.
Thermos so you never end up without a quality drink - or something less enjoyable if you need to show disappointment in a refined manner. (Adjust to your convenience)

    Pet: Diricrawl - 50 Galleons

Screw the Gacha. Just buy the darn exotic pet directly. Price given by Alf. Dodo Bird for the win. It can blink and dimension door. So that is cool.

Book: Invisible Book of Invisibility (10 Galleons
) (Main focus for the year)
Living With Legilimens: Choose Your Minds Wisely (7 galleons) (Secondary focus after learning of first book)

Goal here is not to be the best student in the world, no no. We want to go under the radar. To gain power but to not draw attention so first we learn how to be stealthy, invisible. How to blend with people. Gain trust with people. Build himself up behind close doors. Don't stand out. And that why I grabbed the Legilimens book. Once you have hidden yourself, now hide your mind and learn to read others. IE Start with being the subtle Tomas.

Quill: Spell-Checking Quill (10 Galleons) and Auto Answer Quill (50 Galleons)

Use the first Quill to answer homework. The second Quill is to check your answer before turning it in. Cause the Auto answer Quill will give you the bare bones answer, so that you do not stand out. Don't be the know it all. Be the hidden power.Tea:
Porcelain tea set w/self-heating pot (25 Galleons)
Set of tea leaves (25 Galleons)
    Neverending Tea Thermos (15 Galleons)

    Good tea is good tea.

Total Price tag for my set: 192 galleons. Still have a good amount leftover. And still less that Gacha crazed suggestion spent on just the gacha draws...see it is better to just BUY a familiar.

    [x] Dodo.

Dimension door is a passable advantage. But since Poisonous Toad has acquired zero interest, and Kneazle is a filthy cat...

    [x]Invisible Book of Invisibility
[x]Living With Legilimens: Choose Your Minds Wisely
[x]A Millennium of Wizarding Ingenuity: Inventions, Innovations, and Inspirations that Changed our World

First two look like a beginning of a specialization.
The last one looks interesting, but I'm not sure how much time we will have to read it all. But just skimming it will give Shinji some perspective.
Still waiting for Knockturn Alley goodness, Alf.

    Spell-Checking Quill (10 Galleons)
    Self-Writing Quill (10 Galleons)

Sounds like an efficient combination, yet doesn't encourage laziness like auto-answer.

Porcelain tea set w/self-heating pot (25 Galleons)
Set of tea leaves (25 Galleons)

    None of that plebean garbage.

After a rather thorough crawl of Diagon Alley, Shinji decides on the following items for himself.

    Pet: Diricrawl - 50 Galleons
Books: Invisible Book of Invisibility (10 Galleons), Living With Legilimens: Choose Your Minds Wisely (7 galleons)
    Quills: Self-writing Quill (10 Galleons)
Tea: Porcelain tea set w/self-heating pot (25 Galleons), Set of tea leaves (25 Galleons), Neverending Tea Thermos (15 Galleons)
Total spent on extras: 142 Galleons
Remaining Balance of Wizarding Currency: 258 Galleons
    Remaining non-Wizarding Currency: 500000 Yen

Notably, he did not end up taking advantage of the mystery option in the pet store, even though he could see a wall of winners, from people who had won strange and exotic pets through what seemed like a random draw system. Two of them - Ron Weasley, who had won a Niffler, and Phelan Noel, who had won a Dancing Rate - even seemed his age. Seeing that, he had been strongly tempted, especially when he'd heard one of the prizes was the so-called "Phoenix of Ireland", as he imagined the prestige he would earn from having such a pet.

...of course, reality, in the form of his rapidly shrinking balance, soon set in, dissuading him from that path. He'd already spent almost a quarter of what Tohsaka had loaned him in a single day - and this money had to last him for 7 years!

'Urk...' He reasoned that many of these things weren't costs that would be repeated, like the cauldron, the telescope...or of course, the single most important item he'd picked up. His wand. The proof that he was more than just a common muggle, more than a powerless fool to be yanked around by the whims of a spoiled magus.

[Acquired - Wand: Hawthorn and Dragon Heartstring, 13 inches, pleasantly springy]

Here and now he resolved that not only would he pay off the debt, he would make Tohsaka pay for her cruelty, pay to an inch of her life, just as he would make his family pay. He'd show them what he was truly capable of, watching them crawl back to him, begging for forgiveness at how they'd treated him. Yes...yes...he'd show them all!

And well, if this was all one time costs, he might as well see what was in the place the letter from Hogwarts - from a certain Lord Black - had cautioned him about. Knockturn Alley, a place of great opportunity and great danger.

'Well, no time like the present for an adventure.'

So he told himself as he followed the signs on the road to Knockturn Alley, which was something of a disappointment at first glance, as it was shadowed, dark and dank, with many of the storefronts looking...less than well-maintained, with shrunken heads, black candles giving off noxious fumes, and other such things for sale. These stores made him feel...less than comfortable, so he didn't go in, until he arrived at 13B, Borgin and Burkes, which seemed reasonably safe, if still rather dodgy. At least, the objects in the window display here were necklaces and rings, and since they hadn't been stolen, the storekeeper had to be something right.

'An opal necklace that has killed 19 muggles? A set of rings which will tie the lives of the wearers to one another? A master and slave ring set? ...interesting.'

He could just imagine tricking Tohsaka into putting on a cursed ring which would force her to heed his commands, reversing the power dynamic of their relationship.

'Yes, once I was the debtor and you the master, but with this...I would be the master now.'

Though...he probably couldn't afford it, since there was no price tag on the items, and from what he knew of such things, if one had to ask, it would probably be out of one's price range.

"Welcome...to Borgins and Burkes," the shopkeeper stated as he walked inside, noting his foreign visage and the cassock he currently wore. "Looking for something unusual?"

"Yes, but also...affordable," the boy replied, trying to keep himself from wincing as he imagined how much the items in here would be, or from recoiling from the decor: evil-looking masks stared down from the walls, an assortment of human bones lay upon the counter, and rusty, spiked instruments hung from the ceiling.

"Affordable, you say? Well, that depends on your budget, though we do have a few things available for less than a thousand, if that is what you mean."

    "...anything less than a hundred?"

The shopkeeper looked positively affronted by the query, as if Shinji had insulted his dead mother and danced on her grave.

"What manner of establishment do you believe this is, boy? Some bargain bin retailer whose shelves are lined with counterfeits and trinkets of dubious worth?" the man inquired, his eyes sharp. "This is a place where those who are willing to pay the price may find objects with unusual and powerful properties, items of great age and great worth."

"...fine, what do you have for less than a thousand?"

"Hmph, well, here is what we have in stock."

He gestured to a glass case nearby, which held a withered hand on a cushion, a blood-stained pack of cards, and a staring glass eye.

"The Hand of Glory - best friend of thieves and plunderers! Insert a candle and it gives light only to the holder!" the shopkeeper explained. "A set of cards which render any who handle them - aside from the owner - more suggestible and less...fortunate than they might otherwise be. A wonderful tool for those seeking to earn a fortune in short order, though should one not be cautious about using it... And of course a glass eye that can see through concealment. Obtained second-hand of course."

    He smiled then, very thinly.

"Aside from that, we have an array of potions useful for eliminating pests, some mokeskin pouches that...cause any contents placed within to vanish after an hour, and an assortment of masks which change one's voice and can heighten the fear of those looking upon them."

    [X]The Gambler's Lure - 100 Galleons, Pouch of Vanishing - 50 Galleons and Hand of Glory - 100 Galleons

Card Shark Shinji earning his money back and gaining favors or influence with them. With a Bag to get rid of any evidence that we might need to hide. Hand of Glory so we can read at night, no really Professor. It is not like I want to sneak around at night...

And thus was the story how Shinji became poor yet again. One day we will be good with money. I swear.
