    Shiba Nao
    Shinto - Streets
    Night Phase

Silence briefly reigned over the murder scene of an old cop and his occupant as the four gunmen went to reload their guns. Surely. Surely, they were both dead. There’s no way anyone could survive the crossfire of four guns simultaneously emptying their magazines into the car. If there was, then they had to blessed by the gods themselves or someone who had supernatural means at their side to avoid death. As far, these gunmen were aware their target was just a young girl that followed Azma Tae around.

Almost after those brief thoughts pass by, three dull muzzle flashes occur from inside the police vehicle towards the three furthest gunmen! The shots flying towards their vitals despite the brief timeframe that all three rounds were shot in. The final gunman lucky enough to not be shot at was soon rushed by the supposedly dead young girl.

“ALWAYS CONFIRM THE KILL SMALL FRY!”

Her fist flying straight towards his face before he could finish his reload. If his counterparts possibly died instantly from being shot in their vitals, then the final gunman was unlucky enough to possibly die a slow death by Shiba Nao repeatedly pummeling him with just her fists. The beautiful, light blue aura surrounding her was ill-fitting considering how bloodied and angry she was. If he was lucky, then maybe his allies were still alive and could stop this mad dog from beating him to death.

Not used as often due to the fact that most opponents that Nao has faced are slower than her, but it’s always useful when you need to deliver a hit to someone’s face. That and it allows her to do inhuman feats temporarily like run on objects such as walls, water, etc.

    Takanashi Kotoha
    Shinto - Police Station
    Night Phase

Kotoha stares at the woman, mesmerized. Not because of her appearance, although for a woman who is much older than her, she can’t really find the wear and tear of age, but because of her presence. The woman’s presence has a sort of gravitas that only the experienced possess, and Kotoha, whose instincts are trained for the hunt, can sense a sly fox among rabbits. It’s something that piques her normally vapid curiosity, but now is not the time to ask questions. Quickly, efficiently, that’s how things need to be done. Never any time to dawdle.

“Dunno why you’re on those sides of the bars… But whatever,” Kotoha says, her voice barely above a whisper. Being heard is suicide in the making. “I’mma getcha out, just, don’t ask questions.”

Kotoha carelessly waves her hand, and in a second, Azama Tae is on the other side of the bars. This trick was not something she wanted to reveal, let alone use this often, but sometimes circumstances demanded that you push yourself harder than usual. No explanations, though. Take it or leave it.

The girl idly runs a hand through her hair, scrutinizing the woman she’s supposed to get out of here. While leaving wouldn’t be that difficult for her alone, Kotoha now has extra baggage to worry about, and this woman’s skillset is beyond her. She supposes there’s nothing to do but quickly move before someone bothers to check the cells.

“Hope you’re good at being sneaky. Tricks like that aren’t very cheap, so we’re gonna leave the old-fashioned way.”

Kotoha immediately moves to lead the escape, praying for no hassle.

    Night Phase

    "..."

Where the others move to scream as an impossible horror closes in, a certain crimson-haired owner of the land remains almost disturbingly silent, as if this sort of occurrence was something that didn't frighten her in the slightest...

Of course, such a claim is not true.

If she really hadn't been afraid of the monster, then the desperation with which she had thrown the vehicle into reverse would have been non-existent... Yes, there is no denying that even the stone-faced babysitter feels at least a pang of 'fear' at the appearance of the foreign shadow, and yet she not only refuses to allow it to show on her face, but has been taking steps to counter it the moment she became aware of it's existence, yes...

With her foot slammed down on the accelerator as far as it could go, the screaming engine joining a chorus of children of whom she was responsible, the girl whose hair glimmered like fire has smoothly retrieved a certain gun from her waist.

---That's right, as casually as breathing, in the face of a horror that makes every human aware of their impending demise, the self-proclaimed older-sister simply levels the gun at the approaching target through the driver's side window, and-

"Stop screaming, it's not going to help."

-makes a simple command with an unshakable voice, as if to snap everyone else out of the grasp of a particularly primal fear-!

    Activate Magic Circuits...

    Beginning connection to Ignition Complex...

Of course, she can understand that fear.

Even for her, this is a difficult scenario to be assaulted within...

Use of mage-craft was somewhat inhibited, even without taking into consideration how difficult it would be to cast while driving, the very nature of her mage-craft itself made using it in this scenario a bit of a risk... The opponent's nature seems like that of a suitable target at a glance of course, but if she were to miss and hit the inside of the vehicle, well...

It would likely do more harm than good, and failing to protect these children was simply an unacceptable outcome.

She was the babysitter, as had been stated many times before...

Call it foolish, but she had a duty to see through until the end, not only that...

This was her land, as the owner...

Slaying a monster or two was just part of the job, simple as that-!

    That's why...

Four shots ring out amidst the darkness and screaming of children, trained ruthlessly on an approaching horror.

    Yes...

Four 'shots' that could burn a certain sort of 'world' entirely to ash...

    "..."

Compared to the average person, Masaki Tomomi is a lot more perceptive. For her, it's only natural to be able to tell when others are lying, when others are keeping the truth to themselves or even if they are in pain but pretend they are not. In some cases it can be called a blessing, but most of the time it is a curse that she has to live with. And while she has no idea of what you've been through, she is already aware that your past is not without a stain, not as happy as you try to paint it as. No, in the first place, a life without your parents is a painful one, no matter how kind the one who takes you in turns out to be. She, of all people, should have an idea of how one is affected by such event. Regardless, she merely remains silent for a moment, before dismissing the thought of inquiring any further. The two of you have come this far after overcoming hardship. There is no need to question that, nor is there enough time.

"Don't worry, Alicia. We're almost there." The little girl says, trying to reassure her friend with another smile. "The Sleeping Bishop should be a few more meters uphill."

    Tonight it's really foggy.

It's almost unlike anything you've seen before. The mist has taken over your surroundings and it is hard to see what lies only a few meters ahead. Moreover, the atmosphere itself feels heavy and though not nearly enough to pose a real problem, it's rather taxing to move through it. Almost like the haze itself was sapping your strength which every moment that goes by. Tomomi mentioned that escaping this fog would mean your safety, however, if that is the case, a part of you cannot help but to wonder...

---But what if the inn is shrouded in mist as well...? What then?

"Alicia. Listen." When Tomomi calls your name all of a sudden and in such a serious tone, all your thoughts are brought to a halt. "This monster is not one you cannot face as you are now. Instead, I want you to head to the inn as soon as possible."

For a moment, you are unable to make sense of those words. There is no one else in sight and you cannot feel any sense of immediate danger present in your surroundings. You are surprisingly well-versed on that field, so it is a little confusing when someone else implies they can feel something you've missed.

But, at some point, it becomes clear to you.

It's not that Tomomi feels that the beast is coming; that the beast is near.

    No.

Her senses aren't honed to that extent.

It is that Tomomi calculated the exact time at which the confrontation is likely to occur.

Swirls of dust sweep across the street and dance around her, momentarily driving the fog back. In a matter of seconds, these particles -dark purple in color- begin to drive themselves into one another, combining to create prism-like constructs that hover around the girl. They are beautiful weapons that look like crystal shards to the untrained eye, but in fact might be something else entirely. Even to you, who have yet to even grasp the basics of Magecraft Theory, this dust feels almost familiar. Then, perhaps, it might not be mistaken to assume that Tomomi's power has at least one similarity with yours. At the same time, however, there is no chant, no pain, no process of self-hypnosis. Her power is hers and hers alone, it is not something she has taken from the world and made her own. No, what she wields is the power of humanity itself.

    ExtraSensory Perception. ESP.

Combat is imminent, and yet you a torn. Torn between trusting in your friend's judgment and running away or believing your own hunches and staying to fight by her side. Granted, while you might not be of much help, there is bound to be something you can do. Leaving Tomomi here to fend for herself just feels like throwing her to the wolves for a chance at survival. Even if she's by far the strongest person you've met...

    That beast. That demon.

It is on a completely different level than her own.

    "G- ...Urk!"

The youngest of the Masaki siblings isn't even granted enough time to utter a two-character word. The entire ground shakes violently as something which just covered hundreds of meters with a single leap lands in the middle of the road with no restraint. The force behind the impact is enough for the asphalt to give in, leaving an enormous crater at the point of landing. But that is not all, debris also scatters in every direction and the shockwave itself is strong enough to paralyze anyone.

There, recovering as if nothing has happened, is the swordswoman made of pitch-black darkness.

And, at that point, it becomes clear that the opportunity to run away has expired.

In the blink of an eye, her blade, coated by a strange light, is swung as if to enforce that fact.

However, the attack which should have cut through anything is unexpectedly forced back.

And the one responsible for that is...

"You bastard... I won't let you lay a finger on my sister."

Masaki Taichi, Masaki Tomomi's cool yet foul-mouthed older brother.

"Big bro!" Tomomi calls out, almost out of instinct. "Watch out, that thing is-!"

Her voice disappears the moment their eyes meet. To the average onlooker, Taichi's gaze must have looked cold and condescending, almost as if he was looking down on his younger sister. However, that cannot be farther from the truth. After going through so many ordeals together, they have learned to first deal with the cause of danger and then sort things out. So, the only thing that is written on those crimson red eyes of his is 'I am going all out.'

With that, he once more faced his enemy and then moved in to intercept a second strike with his pitch-black blade.

    "Lady Masaki, are you alright...?"

Following Taichi's trail, another person arrived at the scene. A green haired woman wearing an unorthodox maid's uniform.

"Yes... Thank you, Yuuna." Tomomi nodded. "But Alicia here is hurt. Her shoulder has been dislocated."

“Very well, then.” Having heard Tomomi’s explanation, the maid approaches you. “Alicia, hello. My name is Yuuna. I will take care of that injury now and it might hurt a little, so I’ll need you to trust me. Do you understand?”

The moment you do something, anything, to imply that you agree to her terms, is also the meaning a sharp surge of pain assaults your shoulder, forcing you to yelp in response. Normally, this kind of thing would not be possible. As Tomomi explained some minutes ago, putting your shoulder back into place should not be a simple procedure. Even if the one carrying it out has the knowledge required to do it, at least another person is required to hold the patient in place, otherwise they might hurt themselves further.

However, just like that, the maid has taken care of that problem, and all that remains of it is a foreign sensation on your shoulder where pain was a moment ago.

    "Tch..."

To mark the end of peaceful Masaki Taichi is forced back after only a couple of exchanges. He remains unhurt, but... For how much longer.

This is a foe that might require the combined strength of all four of you together.

Adrenaline surged through Alicia Rosenkopf's body. Every instinct within her screamed that this wasn't a battle she could afford to retreat from. It was do or die now.

She looked over at the boy with the piercing crimson eyes who was currently, somehow, managing to trade blows with that monster. 'He looks so cool!' Alicia exclaimed to herself. 'Just like one of the heroes of those shonen manga I read!' Indeed, with his spiky hair, otherworldly looking blade and that aloof yet dependable aura... he was the splitting image of the kind of protagonist 13-year old boys (and some girls) dream of becoming.

Alicia quickly shook that thought out of her mind. This was a battle now, and that meant she had to worry about fighting. She didn't have time to fawn over this cool new guy. She barely even had time to wonder how that maid-like woman had managed to miraculously heal her wounded arm...

Focusing on the shadowy swordswoman, Alicia scanned her options for what to do next. Charging in headlong like a certain internet meme hadn't exactly worked out for her the first time, so maybe she'd try to test out the monster's capabilities from afar. Alicia pointed her index finger at the ghoul, making a finger-gun gesture as magical energy flowed into her hand. "Linear Shot," Alicia called out as a bolt of shimmering, reflective light shot out of her finger towards the daemon. It lanced through the air incredibly fast, a transient streak of light illuminating the fog-choked night.

This was her weakest spell, so Alicia doubted it would do much to harm the monster. But if she could at least make it flinch, that would tell her something about the shadow's current capabilities. Tomomi had said it evolved, and indeed it looked far more humanoid and defined than the almost shapeless clump of darkness before. But could that evolution have come with any new weaknesses? Like, say, a newfound sensitivity to pain and attack? Alicia didn't know, so the best she could do was scout things out before taking any direct action.

    Yamashita Hiro
    Shinto - Fuyuki's Central Park
    Night Phase

    It's a sin.

Magecraft is not something that belongs to humans. It's an alien power a number of humans have claimed in exchange for part of what they once were. As such, the body will always reject that power. As such, the activation of one's Magic Circuits will always involve pain. For you, however, it might be much more dangerous than that.

If merely borrowing a small portion of its strength is enough to temporarily overwrite your personality, then allowing that power to run rampart would surely mean the destruction of the Magus known as Yamashita Hiro.

That's right, in your case, Magecraft is not just a simple taboo...

    ---It's suicide.

    "Hero-san-! You mustn't-!"

It should be no surprise than a doctor would be able to identify a patient doing reckless things at the expense of their health. Caught in a princess carry, confused by the the situation as a whole and somewhat dazed after a forceful landing, Luna still manages to utter the most rational advise possible. Unfortunately, you have already decided to play the role your name has assigned you and save her even if doing so puts your life at risk. If you push yourself too far, you die. If the enemy catches up to you, you die. If the rules of the game all lead to the same outcome, then isn't it fortunate that you at least get to choose the way the story ends?

    Your vision flashes red.

You lungs run out of breath. No... they've run out of breath moments ago.

Arms and legs cry in agony as you push yourself closer to the edge.

Your body cannot sustain this kind of pace under normal circumstances.

The goal is less than a hundred meters away. At the current pace, you might be able to cross that distance in under ten seconds. The enemy is on your tail, but the fact that it has not delivered any sort of attack probably means that your previous leap must have caught it by surprise. You might be giving it some trouble... If lucky, it might not even have any form of ranged attack available. If that is the case, it might not be merely wishful thinking to assume that you can escape this park alive.

    ---Suddenly, a splitting headache.

Or at the very least, that is the conclusion your oxygen-deprived brain arrives at, before reality quickly makes it come crumbling apart with facts.

The moment your eyes meet, your world is quickly immersed in darkness.

Only to be set ablaze immediately after.

Driven by confusion, a single thought manages to emerge from that polluted sea of information.

That thought is driven by confusion, by surprise, by curiosity.

    Eyes...?

... Since when did that thing have eyes?

Something digs deep into your leg.

A knife-like projectile, fired not with pin-point accuracy, but rather with charged hostility capable of bending the laws of fate itself.

Hiro Yamashita takes 10 HP damage.
    Critical Hit! Impaired Movement.

Naturally, you immediately lose your balance and fall. In a desperate attempt, you give it your all to shield Luna, but the results are far from what's expected from a gentleman. You both crash against the ground with a big thud and are forced to taste scorched earth in your mouths.

    Twenty meters short.

And the beast is already upon you.

Ten steps. It can probably cover that distance in a heartbeat.

It could have ended your life, it could have killed you at any time it wanted. The reason it did not attack earlier was not because it was being cautious, no... It was just taking its time, savoring the terror, it was playing with its prey. And it still is. That attack was not one to kill the target, that knife was not aimed at your vitals, it was meant to hinder your movement, to become another obstacle to be overcome in a situation that already seems helpless.

    And the reason...? Hah...

Well, the truth is, there is no reason at all. The shadow did all of this on a whim.

It just detected people in the vicinity of its newfound territory, approached them and decided to kill them.

Not to exert authority over its domain, not to satisfy an urge of bathing itself in blood. Not because it enjoyed it nor out of sheer malice.

    Simply because it could.

    "..."

However, this is as far as it goes.

Though you were twenty meters short from leaving the park, you were lucky enough to escape its domain.

For it cannot abandon this forsaken mist, even if it wanted to.

Doing so would come at the expense of its own life.

So it simply stands there, and stares in absolute silence.

Meanwhile, You lay at the boundary between truth and mystery, between what is certain and what is unknown.

    Between life... And death.

    Shinto - Streets
    Night Phase

Three shots are fired as the hitmen are busy reloading their weapons.

Against static targets and at this distance it should not be easy from you to miss, despite your position. All those bullets will definitely find their targets in the blink of an eye. Each projectile aimed at their vitals, it is to be expected that this skirmish will end pretty quickly. That is usually the norm when natural meets supernatural. There is little some thugs can do against someone who can act ten times as fast, especially if that someone also has a firearm. In other words, it all should be over in an instant.

    It should... But it isn't.

The bullets that should have taken lives miss their mark, some barely scratching their target, others dealing considerable damage but failing to slow down your enemies. No, that doesn't make any sense. In the first place, no matter which part of the body the bullet comes in contact with, so long as it is a direct hit, it should have a great impact on performance at the very least. And yet, these people resist that fate without a single cry of pain. Almost as if...

---Almost as if they were closer to a robot than an actual human being.

But it is too late to notice and way too late to stop. Moving at speeds that defy human laws, you throw yourself at the remaining man in an attempt to pummel him to death. However, once more, the impossible happens. After all, what should have been a surprise attack turns out to be nothing of the sort, as your foe quickly discards his gun and switches to a fighting stance just in time to intercept and block your attack. An incredible feat on its own right for someone who shouldn't be ready to face a supernatural threat, yet...

    That's his limit.

After all, Shiba Nao is a true monster in Close Quarters Combat.

Maybe your true intent was to grant the man a slow death, but in the end, it turns out to be quite the opposite. A quick follow-up to the head immediately knocks out the man and you move past him swiftly enough to find cover at the entrance of a nearby building before bullets rain on you again. On the other hand, the man isn't as lucky. He's mercilessly shot down by his comrades for a slim chance at getting you.

Just... What on Earth is going on?

Their behavior isn't human. Their reactions aren't human.

Yet they are extremely capable and well-organized and came out of nowhere all of a sudden.

And most importantly... They are all dressed like Yakuza, an organization that is supposed currently allied to yours.

The whole image makes absolutely no sense, starting from the events that lead to the police officer's death.

This doesn't bode well. Master might be in more danger than what you initially assumed.

You need to get past these guys and back to the station, fast.

    ... Before it's too late.

    Takanashi Kotoha
    Shinto - Police Station
    Night Phase

    "Hold it."

All of a sudden, the woman grabs your arm, interrupting your departure. Though the gesture is meant to grab your attention rather than to lock you in place, it is a strange change of pace for someone who has remained silence up until this point, even after catching a glimpse of what you are capable of. In other words, if someone as professional as Azama Tae made an effort to communicate, it is likely that it is for an important reason. Though there is little time, you figure it is reasonable to lend her an ear. If that information can help you get out of here without a hassle, it will be welcome. Unfortunately, as you will soon find out, your escape from the police station will be anything but.

    "Were you seen...?"

There is something strange about that question, but you answer nonetheless. You shake your head, convinced that no one has seen you get into to the cells. When it comes to sneaking around undetected, your skill is first class. Besides, any officer would have stopped you right away had they spotted you in the hallway or in one of the offices.

    "Were you seen by anyone...?"

However, Tae presses further, insisting with the same question. To that, all you can say is that there is one person who has seen you arrive at the Police Station. That would be the old man at the counter, which your partner lured away for you to even be granted a chance in this cat and mouse game. Provided the other girl has done her job properly, he should not represent a threat to the operation. Sadly, the image of the woman with purple hair biting her nails, submerged in thoughts, is not reassuring in the slightest.

"... Then I am afraid escape won't be as simple as you propose. Policemen... Prisoners... In practice, every human being without innate resistance is likely to soon be coming after us. An overpowered, highly contagious, multi-target mind control ability that can be triggered at will after the target has been subjected to its influence once, that is the nature of Endless Day Subjugator, the current Mayor's Demonic Ability."

She further elaborates on the workings of his ability, explaining that though the demonic invasion might be dormant on a target, the Mayor can access information collected by their senses in real time and assume direct control at any time he wishes, and that no matter the number of targets that can be controlled at once, individual performance does not decrease in the slightest. In other words, it is a fairly ridiculous ability that does not manifest often, but when it does, it leaves a mark. It wouldn't be surprising if the Mayor used his powers rise to power.

    This is bad.

    It's really bad.

Because, while the number of people present in this building is low given how late it is, there is nothing that would stop reinforcements from arriving at any time. You subconsciously count your ammo. Hah... Will this really be enough...?

"Let's try to do it the old-fashion way, like you suggest. But let's be ready for anything." A brief pause. "... I don't possess any supernatural powers, so I would appreciate a spare weapon if you have one."

Her distant relative is a mind-controlling freak. In contrast, she's hardly any different from an ordinary human.

"Might be a lot easier if you could just 'teleport' us away, to be honest."

    Easy for her to say.

    Yamashita Hiro
    Shinto - Fuyuki's Central Park
    Night Phase

The more rational part of Hiro dispassionately catalogued a multitude of new injuries. Bruising, cuts, lacerations. The source of that was natural. The power had begun to leave him as he had landed, legs easily capable of making the jump had proven a little to human upon landing, he had torn a few muscles pushing himself to handle the impact. It didn't hurt to much. Yet. Adrenaline was blocking out pain, for now. The lacerations had come from his roll along the ground, even grass become sharp and painful if you passed by or through it at over a hundred miles an hour.

None of that mattered in the slightest...compared to the dagger currently decorating his holy fuck there was a freaking knife in his leg!

It may have been when his conscious mind processed that thought that his ability to maintain composure completely left him, right around the same time as he left his feet and crashed to the ground, half rolled over the doctor in a futile gesture of defense. Caught in the thin corded muscles of the sickly boys thigh, decorated in dirt that was sticking to the blood freely running from the wound, was a thin handled, heavy bladed kunai.

Maybe a stronger or tougher man would have been able to take that. Certainly as a mage he had experienced pain before. But there was something profoundly unsettling about the blade. It was designed to kill, and lodged in his body.

In a sense then, it was almost unnatural that he was alive. He could feel the things weight pulling at him, hard and cold and malicious. It almost felt like a tongue licking at his blood, relishing his pain but craving more. it probably wasn't just the pain that caused Hiro to break.

When he looked back later...it was probably anger at this foreign invasion. He hated it. More then anything, it was that anger surging inside him, enhanced and seasoned by the smell of his own blood...that caused the change.

It started simply. Somewhere, dimly behind him, he heard the oddly insightful doctor cry out in brave but futile warning. It didn't matter. There was nobody left to hear her words. Nobody who would listen at any rate. Nothing but the boy with the burning hand. It was that burning red hand that wrenched the kunai from his leg, and hurled it with equal...no, even greater force at the shadow creature, causing a clang of iron on iron as the malevolent force brought up another weapon to deflect the short dagger into the sky.

When another knife flung from the darkness, It was batted away...no, incinerated altogether, a spirit weapon melted into less then ash by that which consumed spirits. A human could not match this creature. It was death to anything alive. But the demon within, the devil in the boys right hand? That hungry beast was not afraid. Nor did it need to be. After all...

"Ahhhhhhhh! Its been so long since I got to come out!" The...demon? Said, stretching out it's arms in a manner reminiscent of one who has woken up from a long nap. When another kunai came from the darkness, the devil's foot stomped on the fallen cane of Hiro Yamashita, sending it spinning in circles through the air.

...It was at that point something became very apparent. While to a weak and sickly mage, his thin walking stick was a proper for an unsteady body...

...In the hand's of the devil in his right hand, it was a weapon. The thin white staff, impossibly solid against the heat that burned souls, then spun again after being caught. The great devil of Yamashita's calling twirled it like a baton, flicking away several more metal projectiles.

It shouldn't have been possible. Even for a devil. Just because it had power didn't mean it should be able to follow the movements of the Beast of shadows. But...

Those golden eyes could. The demon of the burning hand, whose eyes burned shadow and pierced through any defense...they could in tandem match even the death of shadows. And it was after that thin staff snaked out and batted aside another thrown kunai that sought to plant itself right between the devil's golden eyes...

That it reached up with its free hand, and pulled the bottom of it's eye down, and stuck out its tongue.

    The hell...?

The effect oddly seemed reminiscent of the look a street cat gave a house cat, when it jumped to the outside of the window seal and began to casually clean itself, strutting and displaying its freedom in a taunt to the other, confined feline.

"See now?!" The devil said, taking its staff in both hands and using it to trace a line in the dirt that lay between it and the shifting mist, and the shadow of death that lurked within.

"This is the difference between a king and a god! A king only rules his territory, but a god rules over everything under the sky! You will nyaver catch up to me!"

It was then that another kunai hurled as if from dead air. Unlike the others, which had been almost playful, toying with him even as they brought death, this one wasn't like that at all. it was targetted at the throat, and had no purpose besides death.

"Oops!" The devil...no, the God...said, hurriedly swinging its staff just in time to deflect away the small knife, with it passing so close that the god of the golden hand could actually feel the cold iron passing the skin of its neck as the weapon was redirected.

"Heh, that one yanked your tail didn't it, you flea bitten piece of mouse dung!"

...The God was more prepared this time, and so when another blade came flying out in response to the taunt, slapping it out of the air was a less dangerous prospect.

To be honest, the one sided back and forward didn't seem like it was ready to stop soon. Indeed, for a moment to the observer, such as the surely quite surprised doctor, it must have seemed like the god of the golden hand intended to spend the night taunting death's shadow, protecting itself with staff and golden eyes...that was until around the god, once more, even greater then before, came thick red lines.

The curse of the vampire. The curse of Dracul. That which constrained godhood. Red wraps began to circle and swirl around what had once been the body of a sick boy who had tried his hardest to save a scared girl. The boy called Hiro, who had died a hero. Red and black swirling mana began to speed around him, faster and faster, circling especially thick around and bound his golden right hand.

"Awww...." The God said, shoulders slumping, though not so much as it did not see and deflect another blade from the dark, perhaps hoping to take advantage of its distraction. "Guess I am out of time..."

It was then that the god, injured leg and all, tossed an arm around the back of the markedly older woman with an air of speaking to someone much younger. "No need to worry to much! Just a little further, and it can't reach us. Its spirit fades quick." Indeed, another blade came from the darkness, but evaporated into mist before it could reach them. They weren't precisely safe mind. The mist could shift, and allow the creature a chance to close once more. But still, it must have been less scary. Things are scariest when you do not understand them. It was you knew the rules that you felt comfortable enough to play the game. "don't forget about that fish though.....NHHG!"

At that point, the magus known as Hiro, whose body until that point had been entirely shrugging off the crippling blow he had undertaken, fell against the other woman, having to use her to support his weight, setting them both to staggering. There was no helping it. If he hadn't already had an arm around the doctor, he likely would have fallen over entirely.

"...Ouch." He said, looking shy and rueful. "I...I wont say I wish you hadn't seen that," The boy said, distangling himself and transferring his staff to his injured side so he could limp along side the older woman. "I guess it was the price of helping you. I dont regret it but...I think I may be about to pass out from blood loss. I can however think of a place we could lay down for a spell."

...The place indicated by the unsteady yet some how composed boy, who had shortly before been both god and devil was looking at was toward the outer city in downtown fuyuki...

    ...Specifically, the love hotel district.

    wise up!

Hiro's walking staff is evidently sturdier then it appears.

    Aya Alayana
    Shinto - Bridge
    Night Phase

As it's to be expected, Fuyuki's Red Devil cannot be just talk. Keeping your emotions in check comes naturally to you, and not even the premonition of your own death is capable of disturbing your focus. Even in a sudden fight to the death, your body moves mechanically in response to the mysterious threat. All of its hostility is being thrown at you, so you'll turn your hostility against it in response. Retribution. Alongside sacrifice and consumption, it's just another prominent term found in the Alayana philosophy. You see, they don't look kindly on those who point their fangs at possessions that have been left under they care. It does not matter if it's a piece of land, an ancient relic or a group of troublesome teenagers... When someone places them in danger, the Alayana act quickly and without mercy, their goal to get the point across. This pitch-black chimera is just that: An offender.

---Four projectiles fired in the heat of the moment.

Though they are fired from the barrel of a gun, they are not bullets, yet they carry a special property that makes them even more dangerous. This should not come as a surprise. After all, only conceptual weaponry is effective against foes such as this. The darts cut through the night and easily find their way to their intended target, who is to invested on the charge to dodge them. At the same time, you turn the steering wheel in an abrupt yet controlled motion, pulling the car out of the way at the last moment, avoiding instant death in the process. Regardless of how good affinity your special ammunition may have against this type of enemy, you anticipated that they would not be able to quickly bring the monster to a halt and so you timed your evasive maneuver. As a result, the car is now on an awkward position closer to the edge of the road, but that's about as negatives go.

Because the fight has come to an end already.

After only a single round of combat, Ala Alayana is the victor.

It's almost painful to look at.

The flames that engulf the shade grow bright and strong. Being repeatedly set ablaze with each detonation, there seems to be no end to the torture that it paints in front of your eyes. At best, that should keep the beast tied up for a while. Most likely though, it will be set ablaze as many times as it is needed for it to cease to exist.

This is the cruel nature of the Alayana Magecraft. It cannot do anything but destroy and consume until there is nothing left. And it does so indiscriminately, against both friend and foe. That is right, in exchange from taking the gift of fire from the Gods themselves, humanity will perish by the very same flames that they sought to conquer. That is the concept it envisions.

    "..."

For a moment, there is silence in the car. It's only natural, for not everyone can believe what just happened right before their eyes. It is not often that you showcase such a brutal display of violence in front of people who know you or friends of people who know you. It must be hard to digest, so you decide to do everyone a favor and drive away. Still wary of the enemy you just dispatched, you swiftly fix the vehicle's position and accelerate towards Miyama. True, the bridge is a mess, with more than one victim to confirm, but that's not a job for you right now. You need to take these kids to bed. The agents of the Church on the Hill can take care of the rest.

Unfortunately, twenty five meters is all the distance the vehicle manages to cover before the entire bridge becomes a living hell.

Yes, something 'hits' the car and its passengers, something that cannot be avoided, not as long as one remains on the bridge. It's an otherworldly screech, an ultrasonic soundwave strong enough to move physical objects as an uncontested force, a painful noise that drills not just through your eardrums but your entire body. In practice, you feel as if you have suddenly been caught in a landslide, being crushed under a sea of boulders. Even before the car comes crashing down on the road, now upside down, your world had already been cast into madness.

    Everyone takes 20 HP damage.

There was no mistake in the way you acted. This outcome is not the result of your decisions. No, the 'now' that you see before yourself has been determined by fate and you, as tiny as an ant, were unable to influence it in the slightest. How could you have known that the beast, the demon, made completely out of ether, a never-ending source of fuel for your magecraft, would be able to bend fate to its will and put out the flames just like that? Or that it would grow a mouth, where there was formerly none and then sing the symphony of despair that would bring you to your deaths? One that, no matter how you moved, would have hit you, anyways?

    There was simply no way.

Yes, Aya Alayana is not at fault for what has happened.

Sadly, she's responsible for what will happen in the near future.

Everyone's bodies feel heavy. The car has been turned upside down, and every movement takes an unbelievable amount of effort. Fortunately, it looks like no one has lost consciousness, so everyone is doing their best to get out of the car.

Get out of the car before she makes it there.

    The demon.

The one now holding a spear that's born from human design. Maybe not at the hands of a legendary smith... Hell, if that were the case, it might have been salvation in comparison to this. No, this enormous polearm that was born from human imagination, is not just a tool for killing but something meant to inflict extreme pain on others. It is meant not just to skewer the enemy, but to do so in the most gruesome way possible and scatter their remains through her surroundings with a single sweep.

And the horned demon with a dragon tail...

She could spin it with a single hand, a testament of its strength and dexterity.

At that point, still in a daze, everyone can instinctively understand.

There is no escape from this. It's either you or her...

Only one side will escape this foggy night alive.

    Hiyako Tsurara
    Miyama - Streets
    Night Phase

The moment Alicia’s spell is fired… the wind carried on a faint voice to the ears of the ‘humans’ present.

    “… Hiyako Style…”

At that moment, the temperature of the air fell so quickly that their breathing came out as white mist. Frost covered the windows of the nearby buildings, crackling sounds heard as the sudden difference in temperature took its toll in the surroundings. More importantly, a sheet of ice covered the ground below the dark creature, affecting its footing with sudden slipperiness, and their movements with subzero temperatures one would only expect in the Arctic.

At the same time, the figure of what looked like a foreign woman clad in a white kimono, holding a seemingly ordinary katana that shone with a cold light, appeared from within a blur of speed. Emitting an aura of danger that rivaled that of the shade, eyes shinning with a frosty cyan light, like some sort of fallen god that crawled upwards from its fell realm, such was the unclean and tainted presence that surrounded her, she slashed with her sword.

    “HEAVEN-SUNDERING DRAGON!”

    Tsurara hadn’t acted without thought.

At first, she hadn’t even planned to make a move regardless of the situation she saw when she arrived. She wasn’t really interested in helping out two stupid brats who were over their heads and had committed the stupidity of blindly wandering at night. Furthermore… the maid was really strong, strong enough she should be able to handle most of the minor supernatural threats Tsurara could imagine as a possibility in such a seemingly peaceful place, at least short of an actual Dead Apostle showing up.

But the moment she had seen that tainted shade, she had immediately determined that this was simply not something they could handle on their own. She wouldn’t be able to handle it on her own either: it was simply that strong, outside of the ‘human’ realm to be on a whole other level.

She had at first followed just for her own peace of mind, something akin to ‘I wouldn’t be able to sleep soundly without satisfying my curiosity’, is how she would put it, true or not. But now, ultimately, she simply couldn’t let three kids die in front of her without at least trying to help.

That was just the kind of person she was.

But towards an opponent that surpassed her in all aspects, the brute-force approach, like the one that Taichi had tried against Yuuna, would only end up similarly. So, she had to come up with a plan, and she had to do so quickly. Attacking so fast without a clear idea of her opponent’s full capabilities was foolish, but waiting more had the chance of ending with someone’s guts spilled all over the street.

Thus, she had taken the first opportunity that had presented itself.

First, she aimed for a moment in which the creature had just pushed Taichi back, and someone from the group, Alicia, had cast a spell towards it. She had moved nearly at the same time but not quite, letting the creature react to the kid’s attack and then attacking herself: chances were that even a sword saint would be unable to maintain a proper stance or posture when caught at such an awkward moment. Furthermore, she had used her own ability to freeze the pavement below her to at least temporarily destroy her footing, and inflicted a debilitating feeling of coldness to her.

All this to aim for ‘a moment where the creature couldn’t defend itself’.

She had moved forward in a burst of clearly inhuman speed, one that’d leave Olympic athletes in the dust effortlessly. Tsurara doubted she was faster than the creature, and she was clearly not stronger, but her speed should probably be enough to catch it by surprise if she suddenly approached from the side in a classic flanking maneuver, although altered slightly so she’d end up in front of the being. Chances were she was the physically toughest of the group, after all.

Heaven-Sundering Dragon. It wasn’t a common strike but instead one of myriad techniques within the kendo style her ancestors had developed. When asked about honor, the Hiyako would definitely be the kind that would say that it should be fed to the dogs. They were yakuza, after all, and this sword technique was certainly dirty.

Normally, a sword strike would come from above, towards the ground, to add the weight of the sword and one’s own body to the attack’s strength. Instead, Heaven-Sundering Dragon was a feinting technique that attacked someone’s trained reflexes, looking like a vertical slash that would come from above, only for the user to twist their own body, and transform it into a slash that came from the ground upwards, striking below their adversary’s guard. Thus, it looked like someone slashing at the heaven, and the rising motion certainly looked dragon-like.

However, Tsurara didn’t seem to concede this technique, or her whole scheme, quite that much thought. Rather, because she recognized how beyond even her inhuman limits this opponent was, she hadn’t really expected to score a victory with this. In fact, she was already speaking without knowing the success of her attack.

“Run towards the inn!” She shouted in a commanding voice. Yes, this carefully planned attack hadn’t been meant to defeat: it had been intended only to buy time. Her voice was the kind of voice she used when giving orders to her subordinates, it expected unquestionable obedience, and promised a world of pain to whoever stepped out of line.

The inn was certain to have at least some sort of protection, and furthermore she suspected this Akane character was no slouch at combat herself. Perhaps this was an unavoidable battle, but they could at least attempt to change the terrain.

That may be what’d be needed to tip the scales against this impossible foe.

    Alicia Rosenkop & Hiyako Tsurara
    Miyama- Streets
    Night Phase

    And so, humanity wages war.

Against mighty foe, an enemy born from the realm of legends, a place where humans of the modern age are not granted access to, not even after their deaths. To overcome such monster would be bending the laws of reality itself, for there is no way such creature would submit to the wills of those who stand below it. However, there might be a way to turn the tables, to turn this confrontation into an actual battle rather than a one-sided massacre. The idea is to change to location to one that feels more advantageous to the group, however, to do that, an opening needs to be created first. This is not the sort of being that would allow you to run away, not when its sole purpose is to kill everyone within the extent of its dominion. Fortunately, a plan has already been set in motion.

    "I'll provide assistance as well-!"

Following Alicia's Rosenkop's spell, Tomomi reaches out with her open palm and, in response, the crystals that up to that moment where floating around her all shift their aim towards the swordswoman. A moment later, a good dozen of them are fired at speeds so ridiculous that even the trained eye of a hunter would have difficulty keeping track of the projectiles' trajectory. Catching up with the bolt of reflective light the blond girl fired, they all collide against the shadow, who makes literally no effort to avoid it. Alicia's theory would prove to be right, and doubly so. First, she has been correct in making the assumption that such a weak spell would hardly be any impediment for the foe they all are up against. A mere E-ranked spell would simply not cut it. Even after being powered up thanks to Tomomi's aid, it is unlikely that the attack would leave any sort of injuries on the shade's ethereal body.

But there is nothing wrong with that.

In the first place, the purpose of the attack has never been to hurt the swordswoman.

The flash of light and crystal splinters create an opening, one that doesn't go unnoticed to a fighter who has yet to enter the scene, one who has stood in the sidelines, waiting for this precise moment, one where the creature would be left vulnerable after having to intercept an attack. To mark her arrival, the surge of hostility Hiyako Tsurara emits is accompanied by a sudden drop in temperature that quickly turns the street and its surroundings into a literal icebox. Hoping to further slow down the enemy with this, she quickly jumps into battle and puts all of the experience she can muster into her blade, a Japanese Katana with enough mystery to be able to vanquish oni and spirits alike with ease. The first motion is a feint, and it's not just an ordinary one. Whereas one normally needs focus and experience to see through a move like it, Tsurara's Heaven Sundering Dragon is the opposite. It uses that experience against the enemy, forcing their body to respond before their brain can even process the attack. In other words, by the time her enemy understands the purpose of said motion, it's already too late. The body has already moved in response to intercept it. But, by that time, she's already swung the blade a second time.

Yes, when four becomes five, the tides are turned and an opportunity manifests itself.

    (BGM off)

---Or, at least, that would have been the case if Alicia Rosenkop had not been right in her assumption.

The swordswoman, whatever she is, is evolving. She has been evolving the whole time since it all started. Of course, said evolution comes with a number of complications, a set of limitations imposed upon her. However, to think that those problems out-do the benefits... Is merely wishful thinking. This shadow, this demon of the sword, has become powerful enough to disregard all sort of weak supernatural effects, no matter how annoying. Which would be the same as to say...

That the moment of weakness Tsurara attempted to exploit...

... Never existed to begin with.

Fast and with a enough strength to easily pierce through an ordinary body, the enemy's fist dug itself deeply into Tsurara's gut, not just interrupting her technique before it could be completed, but also nearly knocking consciousness out of her with a single punch. Her order was supposed to be act as a spark of hope, someone that would unite everyone's wills and point them towards a single goal. 'Run towards the inn!' is the message she left behind a mere instant before being hit. But how could anyone carry out that order? How could anyone do anything when someone like Hiyako Tsurara, who is referred to as a Rahkasha, a literal demon on the battlefield, was defeated in the blink of an eye? Even though some of those who are present are more familiar with it than others, there is no doubt. What everyone is feeling right now...

Hiyako Tsurara takes 18 HP damage.

---Cannot be called anything but 'despair'.

The body of the orange haired girl is thrown against the wall of a nearby house, crashing against it with enough force to leave a crater at the point of impact. Had she been anything but a demon hybrid of high pedigree, Hiyako Tsurara would have been reduced to a lifeless piece of meat by now.

That is the signal that kicks Masaki's Taichi's body into overdrive. Escaping at the expense of someone else's sacrifice, especially that of a stranger, is not something that goes against his life philosophy, so when Hiyako asked everyone to retreat, he was eager to do so. But that eagerness lasted only an instant. With the Yakuza heiress temporarily out of the way, someone has to step in, if only to prolong everyone's lives by two or three more seconds. That has to be him. Out of all of those present, he has been the one to hold his own the best against the pitch-black swordswoman. Perhaps it is less a matter of overall strength and more a matter of affinity, but against a sword-fighting enemy, his talent is ideal.

Yes, like Masaki Tomomi, Masaki Taichi also possesses a special ability.

    "Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!"

    One swing. Two swings.

And then it suddenly becomes a storm.

A countless number of attacks rain relentlessly on the opponent at increasingly high speeds. Unlike others, there seems to be something about Taichi's attacks that make the enemy wary, and because of it she decides to ignore the chance for a counter-attack, instead focusing on defense. That's also what the older Masaki sibling wants as that allows him to unleash the full-potential of his fighting style, Sword Dancer. It's a series of high-risk, high-reward techniques that focus on abandoning defense to execute a continuous onslaught meant to overwhelm the opponent's defense. In a battle against many enemies, it's close to suicide, but in one versus one, it's actually pretty strong for the simple premise it follows.

---The foe... Is actually being pushed back...?!

    "..."

It's uncertain how much the boy will be able to hold the demon back, but Yuuna uses this opportunity to enforce Tsurara's order, to an extent. Grabbing the two little girls, Alicia and Tomomi, one on each arm, she departs with a leap that clearly denotes supernatural strength. Occupied with Taichi, the swordswoman does not pursue.

    "Big brother...!"

Shouting one final time, Tomomi's voice fades as the maid's figure disappears in the mist.

    "..."

Though they have escaped, that clearly creates another problem. Five become two, against a threat that five cannot handle. In spite of the fact that Hiyako has been hit hard enough for her bones to cry in agony, it doesn't take away the fact that she is still alive. For a demon hybrid, that is the same as saying 'still able to fight'. So you can count that this is not the last of her. But what can Taichi and her do, against someone that stands on Heaven when they are stuck on this lowly Earth?

    It ends with lightning.

    "Ahhhhhhhhafggggghhhhhhhhhhhh---!!!"

The fight did not even last a full minute.

What should have been a simple clash of blades turned into a conductor for a lightning storm. Yes, electricity was called forth by SABER's sword and was discharged in Taichi's body, nearly killing him on the spot.

Masaki Taichi takes 32 HP damage.

    "Hah... Ah... haa..."

Somehow, however, to boy manages to dig his sword into the ground in order to remain on his feet, albeit in a really poor condition. It's clear that, if he has not been defeated yet, his destiny is leading him towards that conclusion very fast. A true swing of the swordswoman's weapon and it would be over for sure.

    At that moment.

    Something unbelievable happens.

It is at that point in time that a miracle would come in handy. Because to win against this kind of foe, a Deux Ex Machina is needed.

    But...

The arrival of a familiar actor marks this scene as one born from a nightmare and lights the flames of despair ablaze once more.

For having just made it this way by going uphill...

is no other than Sakaki Yuuna, carrying the two girls she intends to protect to her last breath.

Having gone uphill from this location, they ended up arriving at the very same place, coming from downhill.

    In other words...

    At that point everyone realized...

No escape truly meant no escape.

    Aya Alayana
    Shinto - Bridge
    Night Phase
    HP: 80/100, MP: 400/400

    ---Decisive.

For those who witnessed it, such a term may have perhaps been the only correct one for the sonic strike that ultimately would up destroying the car of that witch and those she had taken under her care...

Was it the sonic itself that had flipped the vehicle? Or had the sudden impossible pain simply caused her to lose control of the car? It's a question that requires no answer, as the ultimate outcome will only ever be a single thing; the screeching of breaking wheels, the sparking of metal and concrete, screams and groans, perhaps even a sudden, awful silence?

    Yes.

Certainly that attack had been blessed by 'fate.'

Unavoidable, and seemingly unblockable, a stepping stone in history to correct the 'error' that was the witch's casual dispatch of something that should be far, far beyond her... It's certainly the action of a hero, something that defies destiny for the sake of correcting what they perceive as a "wrong," yes...

The vehicle had been destined to be destroyed, and perhaps too, were those people inside the car destined to perish here on this night...

For those watching far above, this is an easy conclusion to reach; there is no need to struggle with it, from the very beginning the monster was something impossible, defied only by the 'more impossible' feat of a human being able to somehow damage it, but...

This should be the end, yes...

With no immediate response from the witch inside the car, the first one to fight back, and the only one to do so so far...

It would be easy to write everything off...

Flames that had burned so brightly mere moments before had somehow been put out... Or rather, those flames that had coated the shadow's body had gone out; those that had flickered off of her in their never ending hunger still remained to a certain degree, but they had been weakened... Like the flickering of a candle that was about to go out, their persistence in this world was perhaps a sign that their caster's life too, was hanging by a thread...

    Yes.

Those are the conclusions that could be gleamed from the outside, and yet...

    And yet...

    Those conclusions...

    Can only be called wrong...

    Consume.

    Consume.

    Consume.

    Consume.

    Consume.

At what point can those whispers be heard? And from whom do they come? It's a sound that sounds both familiar and incredibly bizarre, it's full of crackles and pops, like those lingering flames themselves are talking aloud, making their presence known to the world as they defy their own fate of extinction for the sake of devouring everything else, and indeed...

    Indeed...

That certainly might be 'what' is speaking...

    The flames.

They are far away and weak, they have been crushed under that hammer called 'fate,' and yet...

    They giggle.

They laugh, as if all of this was funny; if they had eyes, it would be obvious that their gaze is transfixed on that shadow that has beaten down their wielder so effortlessly, as if in awe of that awesome, forbidden power...

And in a sense that's correct, certainly...

The flames do eye that power, but only so far as...

    Consume.

    Consume.

    Consume.

    Consume.

...Noting it as something they really want to eat; in some ways that's all they are concerned with, while the nature of their origin means a flicker of concern and obedience exists for their
    themselves
    wielder,
if she isn't going to say or do anything, then they'll just eat and burn as they like until they can't go on any more, as they are destined to do, especially in the form that they had taken in the hands of the current Alayana heir, but...

Seeing that shadow's retreating back, something changes about the crackles and the pops, and the slow, hungering chase as they crawl along the ground after the demon made of muck...

    Something...

    Ah, she's really angry.

Should have killed her in one shot.

Don't worry, we'll eat you for sure next time.

As if they were being influenced by something else, the crackles and pops become more verbose; it is only natural, that 'fire' is tied deeply to Alayana Aya, so deep that they might as well be one and the same; she is the one thing that can tame them, the one thing that they won't be able to consume no matter how powerful they get, and once her consciousness reawakens from it's brief blank out, from the impact of sound drilling into her skull and her head slamming into the dashboard, her feelings leak out from her soul and become expressed in that 'fire,' in that regard....

It is not it's own entity at all; or perhaps it is something like a shadow?

    Regardless...

It becomes a voice-box for one who currently cannot speak, a whisper filled with violent vengeful intent that she would never voice aloud, but that now burns brilliantly inside of her now that her charges have been harmed, yes...

    ---It's a babysitter's wrath...

    An older sister's wrath...

    Yes.

Stepping out of the car with remarkable grace for her injuries, landing on hands and knees and exiting in one fell swoop, the red-haired woman's only real sign of pain at first is the hand pressed to her forehead, a mark of an all-too fragile human body screaming about the sudden onset of abuse, but...

---Aware that her impossible opponent is approaching, that hand withdraws after but a single moment; she does not have time to nurse her wounds, now is the time to battle an opponent that cannot be defeated, to fight off the grasp of despair, and yet...

    Where did that despair go?

It's no longer there, even the flecks of it that had existed before...

Had melted away into the burning flames of this sudden burst of anger, and yet...

"...I see. You managed to put them out."

...Why is that voice still ice cold?

    "That's impressive."

---It's a monster beyond human limits.

For that reason, her statement has no meaning; while it might be impressive from where she's standing, from the monster's point of view it must only be natural, and yet...

"But if you were capable of doing that... Why didn't you run away?"

In other words, the red haired woman is saying something insane, yes...

    Why didn't you run away?

    In other words...

...Under these circumstances, I would have let you go.

    That's what she's actually saying...

    It's arrogant.

Has to be, and yet her face betrays no fear.

    Eyes close, then:

"I suppose it must be the fog, then? Well, not like it matters to me."

It has to die now either way.

One of them has to go, either her or it, and she has no intention of losing...

Just as it couldn't bear to quietly burn until she was too far away to actually ensure it's death, so too did this magus reject this thing's silent declaration that fate had decreed her death, that she was an ant that couldn't budge it in the slightest, after all..

---Who does this shadow thing it is?

    A fate of inevitable death?

Is that supposed to be surprising?

Is that supposed to induce true despair?

    No...

    No, no, no...

The Alayana have been aware of that fight from the very beginning, she was born within that despair called the "truth," and the family goal was to push that death back perpetually; burn everything else if you must, but keep humanity going no matter what...

That's why she doesn't mind destroying monsters.

If the opponent was a human, there would be a bit more hesitation in all of this; but...

As it is, it's do or die.

One of them will kill the other, and that will be that-!

"...Connection to the Ignition Complex: Confirmed... Mortal Flames. Reignite-!"

    So saying...

    The magus out to the
    herself
    fire,
telling it that she has not given her permission for them to simply be snuffed out; it's a demand filled with prana, a soul-bound connection to those flames that couldn't be severed so long as she was alive, and-

-while those flames that had covered the girl's body are too far away for her voice to reach, those flickering remnants, the dying sparks of that distant crawling flame, the fires that had whispered into the ears of a monster...

Reignite with a fury that shows no mercy to their surroundings, as their caster beckons them to live with her magical energy, live and consume everything that opposes them, be it this unnatural fog, or the entity of shadows...

To do so is to consign this bridge to oblivion, but...

That seems to be the intention, setting everything ablaze; still...

The fires she had chosen to rouse are quite the ways away, even if they will inevitably make their way over to her as they spread and burn once more, the monster will inevitably reach her long before they do, thus...

It seems like a foolish action to take, but...

If Aya Alayana is to fight seriously... Then this world must become hell; it is only amidst the sea of flames that this magus truly shines bright, it is there, and only there, that her existence as an ant might just shake the world to challenge fate, to that end...

The distance that had been put between was fine, she would simply have the flames burn through it all to reach her opponent... Or something along those lines.

Simply spreading was enough at this point.

But still... She can't just ignore her opponent...

    "..."

She has no bladed weapons, nor is she carrying a shield of any sort; her only defense are the flames that she has cast into the distance, and thus her options of what to do when cornered like this are slim, even so...

    ---Two more shots.

It's dipping into reserves that are a pain to replenish, but holding back now would be the sort of ill-timed joke that only ends in the demise of herself and those under her care, thus...

Locking eyes on an opponent that had never had any real intention of hiding itself, she...

Moves to defend by forcing it onto the defensive; considering it had already tasted her 'power' once, it was likely that it would be unwilling to simply take her attacks head on again...

    Yes.

Standing calmly as the world ahead of her turns straight into hell, a certain older sister...

Makes sure to stay at the front of the group.

---They were her responsibility, so if someone got hurt.

It might as well be her.

    Ability

    -Mortal Flame-
A unique form of pyrokinesis magecraft utilized by Aya; the flames themselves seem actively malicious to an extent... Or are perhaps obsessed with consuming magical energy/ether? Regardless, they seem to be willing to do whatever they must to avoid being put out...

Will try to eat anything or anyone they can reach; Aya herself is only excluded in the sense that she has some means of actively stopping them; still, her connection with it is seemingly good enough to allow her to manipulate it from a distance...

    Origin Perk

    -Memento Mori ~ Spiral Virus-

A unique Thaumaturgical Foundation utilized by the Alayana Family that seems to revolve around both "consumption," and "humanity." Probably the reason why her flames are weird.

    Alicia Rosenkopf
    Miyama- Streets
    Night Phase

"W-what just happened? Alicia gasped in shock. One moment she and Tomomi were being carried away from the battle, and the next space had warped to bring them right back where they were before. Just thinking about it made her head hurt.

It seemed a similar shock had overtaken the maid who had just been diligently carrying them. While her stoical expression didn't falter, a sharp intake of breath betrayed that she was just as astonished as the two children by what had taken place. Her grip slackened slightly, letting Alicia wriggle free of her grasp and land on her feet. Alicia was grateful to the woman for trying to shield her with her body, but had a feeling the loss of mobility would only hinder them if that monster attacked again.

Alicia looked across at the street turned battlefield, trying to regain her bearings. The boy- the one Tomomi had called 'brother'- had been critically wounded. He was standing, but barely, reduced to leaning on his sword like a cane to prop himself upright. His clothes still smoldered from the lightning strike, the ugly stench of charred flesh pervading the air nearly making Alicia gag. His breathing was ragged, and his muscles tensed as ripples of pain shot through his battered body with every breath. Yet still he stood, scarlet eyes glaring at his foe with a gaze full of fighting spirit.

The boy was tenacious- that he was still standing at all despite his injuries was prove enough of that- but tenacity alone could only go so far. Alicia knew- the realization sinking like a dagger in her gut- that one more strike from the swordswoman would put an end to his valiant yet feeble show of defiance.

Alicia's hands clenched at her sides. She'd sworn that she could back up her newfound friends in battle, but her singular attack amounted to less than nothing- not even deigned worthy of dodging by the pitch-black beast. Her theory that a weak attack could expose some of the monster's weaknesses had proven worthless, no more than the fanciful dream-like reasoning of a child yet to be taught in reality's harshness.

Once again, she was helpless. Once again, Alicia Rosenkopf couldn't protect the things she cherished with her own hands.

    "Haaaaaaaaaagh-!!"

Screaming out in rage, howling out in defiance. Either way, what poured forth from the young girl's lips was a cry of protest against her own weakness, her own powerlessness. But more than anything, against the arrogant providence that sought to decide the fate of herself and her friends. If 'fate' decreed that she would die here, then Alicia intended to rage against that fate with every fiber of her being. Yes, truly, for Alicia Rosenkopf this hammer blow of despair hadn't marked the end of the battle, but the beginning of her declaration of war.

"Stay away from my friends, you shadowy jerk!"

Childish words from a girl unused to bearing or expressing hatred. Normally such a callow attempt at intimidation could only be called laughable. Yet the fighting spirit burning behind her words was certainly no joke.

"Shard Fangs!" Alicia called out, sweeping her hands out wildly to either side. Instantly every streetlight in the vicinity exploded. Sounds of shattering glass rang out across the road like countless bells chiming in distorted harmony. But the shards from the broken bulbs didn't fall to the ground. Instead they stayed frozen in the air, as if awaiting their queen's orders. Alicia slowly brought her hands together and willed the shards to swirl together, condensing into a massive glass javelin.

    "
    Release
    Freisetzung
!" Alicia exclaimed, thrusting her palms outward. On cue the lance that had been content hovering placidly in the air surged forward, hurtling towards the daemon like a ray of light piercing the darkness. As flashy as it was, this was still merely a D-ranked spell. Alicia knew that it wouldn't stand a chance in harming the monster.

---However. The nature of glass is not to pierce but to 'shatter'. That in itself is the root of Alicia Rosenkopf's Magecraft. And once the spear breached the ghoul's ethereal body, Alicia intended to let it break, rupturing into countless shards that would tear the enemy apart from within. That monster's defenses may be impervious from the outside, but could it withstand an attack detonating on the inside of its body? Here the shadow's proven unwillingness to dodge attacks might work against it. Going by before, the creature probably wouldn't even register the incoming javelin as a threat before it pierced through. And by then it'd be too late.

That was a chance Alicia was willing to wager everything on. Her hopes, her pride, her wish to protect her comrades, Alicia poured everything into the fragile spear launched against the umbral monstrosity with all the magical power she could muster.

But--- in the end whether the sound of shattering glass would herald hope or despair, not even the girl herself could answer for sure.

    Wise-up!
Alicia's Magecraft seems to revolve around creating and telekinetically manipulating glass shards. She's shown two spells so far, 'Shard Fangs' that condenses glass into the shape of a weapon, and 'Linear Shot' that fires a bolt of reflective light from her fingertips. The latter spell is exceedingly weak, but practically unrivalled in speed of casting time.

    Shinto - Love Hotel District
    Night Phase

    "..."

When the girl known as Luna comes to, she finds herself staring at the entrance of luminous, yet shady-looking hotel. Even when a good part of her memories have been lost, she can tell what kind of place the one in front of her is with just a single glance. It's only natural, the love hotel does nothing to hide its identity and even less so in a district that has been built for the purpose of fostering its kind of business. In other words, it is at this point that the blue haired doctor, still dressed as such, begins to question not just your sense of morality but also the extent of your sanity.

It goes without saying that under normal circumstances, she would have not have followed you this far, not even to repay the favor of saving her life. However, a little speck of hope still remains in the young maiden's heart in regards to the reason why you have made her venture into this dangerous land. After all, in spite of being somewhat unestable in terms of personality from time to time, it honestly seems like you are doing all this with good intentions. If that's the case, she can think of a couple of things that could redeem you. For instance, the place could belong to someone inside your family circle, your only connection within this forsaken city... Or something like that.

    "..."

Truth to be told, Luna is not as innocent as her beautiful features make her up to be. And though it might be the norm to act relaxed around someone like you, there is no way anyone wouldn't feel tense in a situation like this. Especially so when you have yet to explain your motive. A boy meets a girl and then before they know it, they suddenly crash in a place like this. Isn't that how it often goes, in this day and age? How could you possibly avoid raising suspicion...?!

    "......................................."

A long silence ensues as the clerk in charge eyes the two of you. A young boy with messy hair, someone who, despite his age, has seen too many strange things to care, who is far too tired to care, and whose only wish is to be somewhere else with someone else. In short, though his response should obviously have been "Holy shit, are you okay?" or "Oh my God, you are bleeding-!"d he instead just speaks the words he repeats every single day he's behind the counter, with a monotone voice that makes one ponder if he at some point stopped perceiving the reality the way a normal teenager should.

    "You want a room, yeah...?"

His eyes might not bear any prejudice or hell, any emotion at all, but that doesn't stop Luna from feeling a surge of shame wash over her body. She has reluctantly accepted to enter... Yet why does it feel like, to the average onlooker, it looks like she is being the instigator here? Is it because she's taller and you look like an innocent kid in comparison...? No! She definitely isn't THAT kind of person!

    "N-No! We can't! I am M... M-married-!"

Mentally pushed against a corner by this bizarre turn of events, Luna brings something up without thinking. Is that a excuse made up in the heat of the moment? Or is she telling the truth? Regardless, she does not seem to possess any sort of evidence that she is married, not to mention that she looks too young for that sort of engagement.

Well, it's not like the clerk guy cares, anyways.

"Yeah...?" He comments, unimpressed. "Those come here a lot."

    Escape!

    She needs to escape!

Face boiling red, these warning messages are the only thing on her head right now-!

When you get right down to it, the human body could adapt to almost anything. Things like...a curse that constantly sapped at your magic and your body, leaving an ongoing feeling of being tainted...used...

Things like...a monster in your mind, a power that coursed through you, whispered enticing things to you, seductive and terrible, leaving a feeling of unrivaled potential and unquenchable lust.

Things like...an open and bleeding tear in your leg, exposing muscle and far to much blood to the outside air. Leaving a feeling of...well a feeling that your fucking leg hurts, really.

Hiro almost found himself getting used to the pain and mild blood loss induced dizziness as they walked. Well, she walked, he limped, pushing off his walking stick. Between the blood loss, exertion, and mana lost when the devil of his hand took over, Hiro trudged along in a torpid state, the only thing really keeping him going was a stubborn desire to maintain whatever was left of his dignity following him losing control of the spirit.

Well, that had been what kept on his feet through the walk down town. what was keeping him going now? Well...that could best be described as...mirth.

Ahahaha. Oh man. She is unexpectedly cute. Hiro’s amusement was mildly seasoned with guilt, because her emotional predicament was somewhat his fault. However, his choice of venue for them to recover, he still believed to be the right one. He needed to speak to a ray shifter. The information she might be able to add to his own knowledge of the fragmentation of history could be more invaluable then the servant studies he had entered fuyuki to undertake.

That said, Hiro right now was having trouble not cracking up. The little boke routine had been worth the price of admission. If she had been calmer, the solution was obvious.

And yes...Hiro did have to fight down a momentary urge to keep his mouth shut. Humor was not worth cruelty.

”Peace now,” Hiro said to the flummoxed older woman. “Have peace. We will be getting two rooms of course. Close together preferably. And a clean towel.” Hiro directed that last part to the hotel worker whom Hiro suspected was enjoying the reactions he was evoking a little to much.

”You are right in that I was going to ask our innocent maiden to attend me. But in a medical sense,” the boy said, indicating his injured leg. “Thus a towel or something suitable to be wrapping this up.” Hiro offered a rather modern credit card to pay for the service, maybe surprising for a young magus lord but Hiro’s family, for a certain reason, got along surprisingly well with technology. As for the price, he wasn’t rich, but he wasn’t broke either. A simple service fee was reasonable enough.

...Though his father or his governess might be giving him a call soon, when they saw that particular charge to his accounts!

    Night Phase

Kotoha does not pretend she understands any of the “how” of the situation, but the world demon lingers in her ears, starts an uncomfortable itch she doesn’t know how to scratch. Murdering the police major off a whim was both absurd but incredibly appealing at the same time and the fact she can’t figure out why it’s the case is starting to piss her off. She’s a professional—emotions, especially whims like these, were not supposed to be part of the job.

Nevertheless, it’s good to know. What isn’t good to know is that she has to lend Little Miss VIP a gun, and well, Kotoha supposes it’s moderately fortunate she has two.

Not that she likes it. She’d almost rather die than let someone touch one of her guns, but it is still only almost. Living was pretty fun, after all.

“Here,” she says, tossing Tae one-half of the most precious gift she has ever received. And a magazine or two for good measure. “Don’t lose it. They’re a pair and one of a kind gift, so if you lose it I’ll hunt you down for the rest of your life.”

These are the words a cute high schooler like herself should definitely not be saying, but the guns were that important to her. They held memories that couldn’t be matched. And as such, she attempts to secure their safety in the only way she knows how.

Not to say that being raised by the Yakuza has made her lack manners, but it’s certainly taught her what words get people to obey. Considering how this woman has been acting though, Kotoha hardly expects those words to even register as imposing, but she needs to get the point across regardless.

With that, the young girl makes her way towards the exit of the jail, even more cautious than she had been before. Assuming the woman, Azama-san, was correct… Getting caught would be the kind of slip-up she couldn’t weasel her way out of.

Kotoha peeks, waiting for the right time to move. With no space and no disguise, she only has her gut to follow and the blessings of lady luck to trust.

"I appreciate it. This is a very reliable pistol." Quite pleased with your firearm of choice, Tae reveals a discrete smile as she meets your gaze and nods in agreement. "Very well, I'll take your advice to heart. I don't think I could handle another person coming after my head. Maybe if I still were in my teens..."

Her words might be enough to fool the average person, for there is some truth contained within them. After all, few are the ones who can escape from the grasp of time, from eventually seeing diminishable returns as the years go by. With every passing season, it takes more investment and effort not even to grow in skill, but to prevent the loss of what one has already achieved. In other words, being considerable older than the girl she once was, it can no longer be said that she is in her prime.

But, while that is not exactly a lie, to claim this woman is old enough to be considered a pushover is, by all means, absolutely wrong. What allows you to see through this veil is not a skill or special affinity towards crafted illusions but rather the minuscule details and evidence only someone with similar talents can pick up. Azama Tae can manipulate this firearm as if it were an extension of her body and can do so without showcasing a single speck of doubt. This goes beyond being a simple gun enthusiast, she's a professional who has been a shooter for a good part of her life. Supernatural powers aside, in a contest of pure shooting skill, she would be a hard foe to overcome, even for a natural genius, such as yourself.

    "..."

Silently, the two of you make your way back towards the main part of the station. Here, there are no reliable places to hide and if a shooting were to ensue, you'd still be quite exposed despite the good number of obstacles that can be found in the narrow yet cramped hallways that lead towards the main counter and the entrance. All you can do is rely on coordinated movements to advance and avoid detection and pray to whatever God you believe in that no police officer decides to stand at the wrong place and at the wrong time. Fortunately, the woman with amethyst-colored hair, quickly proves to be quite capable in her responses, most likely due to experience in similar operations in the past.

But then, there is also what she said only a few minutes ago: If these people have already been subjected to some sort of brainwashing power and have already become aware of your presence... It's entirely possible that you or the person you're supposed to protect could get shot down before making it outside.

    "..."

Having finally reached entrance room and move over the counter, Azama Tae finally relaxes her stance. You have succeeded in evading any encounters on the way here, but to be more precise, that has only been because there is no longer anyone in this police station at this point but yourselves. Everyone else seems to have vanished into thin air. A premise that would have been considered a miracle mere moments ago, now fills the scene with an ominous atmosphere, as such outcome can only be considered 'strange' or 'impossible'. Though all the visible sources of danger have disappeared, the danger that lurks within the unknown still remains and makes your sense stand on high alert. In essence, it is nothing more than a gut feeling, something you are not sure your companion can perceive but... Something you can't shake off nonetheless.

"Quiet." At this point, Tae's voice is no more than a whisper. "Listen."

With careful steps, you move closer to the entrance doors in a roundabout way so as to avoid placing yourself in the line of fire. Being made of wood, there is nothing that would save you if someone on the other side suddenly decided to fire a bunch of bullets through them. But as you lean your body against one of the adjacent walls -while Tae does the same on the opposite side-, the sounds that you perceive is not indicative of any sort of ambush waiting on the other side. If anything... It's pure, chaotic noise. Like someone smashing a metal pipe repeatedly and without mercy against another surface. The moment you decide to slide the door slightly open in order to better grasp what's going on outside...

---There, despite the darkness and the thick fog that envelops the area, You bear witness to something impossible.

Something violently crashes against the floor of the police station's parking lot, asphalt giving in under the sheer force of the impact.

Standing in the middle of the resulting hole left on the ground is something which cannot be called human. It's form is somewhat humanoid, but it lacks essence, a soul, something that would make it any different from a mere shadow. It's a monster, something that can only belong to the world humanity turns a blind eye to, and thus an enemy. Needless to say, it is the sort of being that could kill an enormous amount of humans unaided, for no ordinary weapon can harm it, let alone end its life. Yes, under normal circumstances, something like this would be a major threat, a signal for a force of authority within the world of the arcane to intervene and put things back into place, but...

---But how can it be called a threat, when it is being neutralized so easily?

Destruction comes crashing down once more on the parking lot, but this time you manage to catch a glimpse of what causes it. Projectiles, fired at incredible speeds from somewhere nearby. To you, the only moment where they become visible is right before they come in contact with something, right before they detonate and shake the nearby structures and the hearts of everyone watching this battle. And there, amidst the mist, amidst the chaos and lunacy, is a man whose attire gives the impression of him being of high-social standing, to the point that even his long, disheveled hair does not come through as something unsightly, but the complete opposite. Indeed, if one is to compare it to something, it has to be a lion's mane.

And that person remains there, fixed in place, unfazed, as more and projectiles fall into the battlefield in a storm of metal that is meant to eradicate the darkness. That person... Was once little more than an ordinary human.

    And then... It ends.

Countless attacks connect with their target, each of them fatal on its own.

However, mysteriously, a trace of the shadow's strange presence can still be felt.

"That will keep you pinned down for a while, beast. Enough for you to learn not to attack the hand that feeds you."

Having removed the dust from its shoulders, the man turns towards the entrance to the Police Station, flames and destruction behind him. Then, all of a sudden, his polite voice is replaced with a yell that could pierce the heavens.

"TAEEEEE-! I KNOW YOU ARE THERE, SO COME OUT AND FACE ME-! LET'S SETTLE THE SCORE ONCE AND FOR ALL-!"

    It's an unreasonable request.

Someone so weak will never be able to stand against someone so strong.

Yes, not even that shadow, that incomplete manifestation, could hold a candle to the genuine article.

So what can one expect from Azama Tae, someone who is hardly anything more than an ordinary human?

    "..."

Naturally, it is safe to assume that following his orders will lead to the end of her life. But, at the same time, What is the alternative? Can this wall hold out against an all-out attack that the one that descended on the parking lot? In the face of so much power, there is seemingly little anyone can do.

    Even more so...

    "..."

When the one standing in front of you is Mayor Asama, the new ruler of this forsaken city. Someone whose face has been all over the local media this past week and a figure whose importance might become even more relevant in the future.

Someone, who, at this precise moment, might have the fate of Fuyuki in the palm of his hand.

"Ah, I see. It's not exactly common, but these kind of cases present themselves from time to time." The boy behind the counter says as he quickly takes possession of your credit card. "Worry not, each room is equipped with at least two sets of clean towels. You can find those in the bathroom. They should prove to be more than enough for your little 'roleplay'. Hopefully."

Still, he has to admit the two of you have made an impression. Granted, among female roles, the nurse is quite the popular choice, second only to the casino bunny attendant and the almighty maid, so it was not a surprise to see someone dressed for the occasion. However, it was a shock to finally realize how invested the two of you are in the fantasy that you created. At first, the boy thought you were amateurs trying new methods to spice up the relationship, as neither of you seemed to be 'into it', but, in hindsight... What else can you be, if you are not PROs?

You see, the odds of an injured teenager coming into a love hotel accompanied by a female doctor casually renting a pair of unoccupied rooms so he could be treated... Are so low and the scenario itself is so bizarre and ridiculous... That the only conclusion that he can reach is that it all must be a fabricated a lie. A reality crafted in order to emulate an adrenaline-rush situation where the act is much more meaningful and passionate. 'Damn' he must have thought the moment he cracked open the mystery that had been bothering him ever since you arrived. For the first time this year, something stood out in his monotone and tedious routine. And that IS impressive-!

"Umm... Yeah. Uh, have a special discount. It's on the house."

Flashing a tired yet mischievous smile, the boy goes the extra mile and does something he shouldn't out of respect and gratitude. It's not much, but as someone with finite resources, it surely counts. After he returns your credit card and hands you over the room keys, Luna and you venture into the depths of the love hotel, the latter still somewhat wary, like a castaway on uncharted lands.

    "..."

As you walk away, the clerk shoots one final glance at the back of your body. Despite its child-like build, he can't deny it possesses a certain kind of charm. Otherwise, you wouldn't have been as confident as you were this whole time. But delving further into that sort of thoughts is a dangerous adventure for a man, and so he concludes it's for the best to leave his curiosity unsated. Fetching his phone, he opens a certain app and prepares to enjoy a new chapter of his favorite show.

    "... Ah, no internet connection."

Either the weather is messing with the connection or Fuyuki's internet service is just that bad. Regardless, this man has come prepared. He has downloaded some movies in case something like this would happen!

    -------

"Truth to be told, this is all rather new to me, so forgive me if I do something wrong."

A completely common line to be heard within the confines of a love hotel, but one you wouldn't want to hear from the doctor in charge of looking after your injuries. Fortunately, given the lack of proper tools for the job, Luna makes a great job at cleaning and wrapping the wound, the ultimate result leaving it clear that she at least possesses a bare minimum of skill in the fields of medicine and human body anatomy. Case in point, you should be able to move much better after a good night's sleep, that much you can tell.

"I... I still have no idea of who you are or what exactly is going on... Not even exactly where we're supposed to be... But..."

In but a couple of minutes, the procedure will end and she'll undoubtedly go back to her room. You too are in the dark when it comes to Fuyuki's situation and you can already tell that moving around the city is going to be more dangerous from now on. That means that times like this, where you can talk in private, may become scarce in the future and that you should probably use this opportunity to talk some information out of your newfound ally. However, doing so might be kind of tricky. Quite a few times already she has implied that her memories are all jumbled up and thus her capacity to recall things from the past is rather limited. So asking the wrong kind of question may result in a huge waste of time...

"Again, thank you for saving me."

    Hiyako Tsurara
    Miyama- Streets
    Night Phase

    Crack

The concrete wall of a certain house cracked apart, crumbling like paper under the force of the creature pushing at it. The temperature in the already cold street dropped even further, frost forming around the houses, the lamplights, the asphalt… it was as if the world had been transported into Cocytus itself.

“So, you attacked before I could attack. Not a bad reaction time.” A cold voice commented lackadaisically, seemingly very pleased. “A good way to deal with the situation all things considered. Interesting.”

The Frozen Rakshasa walked out of the crater she had formed in the wall with calm, even steps.

“You do seem to have some intelligence, monster.”

Blood was trickling from her lips, and her clothes were slightly disarrayed… but… that was all. Sure, her body hurt a bit, her bones creaked slightly when she moved, and her ribs hurt like hell, but that was all.

Although Tsurara didn’t know this, she had taken the strike of a top-tier Saber class Servant, and all it had accomplished was to wind her.

“It is a shame that you are not the only monster here.”

She didn’t even seem to care if the shadow in the shape of a woman was listening to her or not. In fact, she was merely watching the on-going tragedy with detachment, as if it was unrelated to herself.

Yes. The only thing that could be seen in those inhumanely glowing light blue eyes was an insane arrogance that would allow no fear nor despair. It was the sight that the whole underworld of Japan would fear the most.

It didn’t matter that escaping had been revealed as impossible. It had already ceased to be an option.

Hiyako Tsurara wouldn’t stop until it had made this black monster into her bitch.

“This will cost you more than a finger, you know?”

    And that’s it.

Once she finished a monologue that she had been seemingly speaking out for her own amusement…

She ripped away the human guise and revealed the nature of the monster that dwelled underneath. A berserk Demon Hybrid that thrived on the battlefield and slew both devils and gods, without caring about what kind of being would cross in her path.

    In other words.

    A Rakshasa.

Taken out of the fight? Defeated in a flash?

    Wishful thinking.

    Laughably so.

Tsurara’s speed as she dashed towards the shadow went beyond human and started to approach the limits of the supernatural realm. The sidewalk and asphalt both cracked with her every step, the sound of ice shattering as her feet slammed against the rime-covered street loudly invading the place. By now, she isn’t holding back anymore, and her demonic presence hung around her in a fearsome blueish aura that caused her silhouette to shine in the night.

It is a suicidal approach. One that can only be met by one end, leaving herself completely open to the shadow’s sword, which should soon pierce through her heart and finish her off right here and now.

    Yet…

The shadow’s sword arm couldn’t be moved.

Before that fact could be processed, Tsurara held her sword high. The ancient relic of the Hiyako suddenly glowed brightly, pale blue flames alight in its blade, the katana suddenly releasing a powerful, blinding shine as the ancient conceptual magic inscribed within was activated. The flames intensified further and further until they became like a beam of solid light.

In less than a thousandth of a second, the weapon had become less a sword and more like a cryogenic laser, a cold light that would burn through anything. A weapon designed to pierce through supernatural defenses by becoming ‘something that couldn’t be defended against’.

And then comes down a slash like a guillotine’s.

It is said that a master of the whip could wield their weapon in such a way that the tip would break the barrier of sound with each strike.

And, what happened when someone with the superhuman physical attributes of a Demon Hybrid combined with mastery over the Way of the Sword struck with all their might?

The sword became a bright blur that disappeared from human sight, the sound of the barrier of sound being broken crackling on everyone’s ears. A simple slash, but one executed beyond the bounds of humanity.

It was not aimed at the shadow’s body, nor at its neck or at its head. No. Tsurara might be stubborn to the point of insanity, but she learned from her mistakes. If the creature could react before, it could react now, even if her speed and strength when up a gear.

That’s why, she told it that this would cost it more than just a finger.

A brutal and merciless strike aimed to lop off its free limb.

Maybe if she was feeling merciful afterwards, she would let it go.

After all, given what was happening to its other arm, even if the shadow got its other limb out of the way, the sword was sure to at least dig into its body. Theoretically speaking, it was a wholly unavoidable strike, but it was not as if the monster couldn’t do something to deal with it.

But it would perhaps mean opening itself to the attack of the others.

It was time to see just how smart this thing was.
