I have a theory about Magatsu. I think he is a Matou working under an assumed name. Slot himself into the Army to try and manipulate them for a leg up in the last war, but nothing went according to plan and of course failure is hardcoded into their family so his attempts to break even this time go about as well as they ever do. It explains his lack of hard magic skills, relying on herbs and mixtures like the later talentless members of his family, his wakame hair and even the shape of his command spells have the similar triskelion design that all the Matous have shown.
