No, that's not quite enough despair.

Shirou declaring that he would damn himself to an eternal hell with a smile on his face if it meant he would save his friends? That would do it.

Cue Nanoha and Fate realizing that their chosen professions will give Shirou plenty of reasons to needlessly endanger his life and afterlife for their sake.

EDIT: Naturally, he smiles reassuringly the entire time.

I was kinda hoping you would get the hint

Raganarok, I love you for that idea. Somehow all those shocking revelations are always great stuff to read.

    Oh, the horror...

Always a pleasure to inspire horror. And nothing reflects horror like shattered innocence.

Remember that in my snippets they tend to cling to him in their sleep most of the time? It's because they still fear losing him, even at that point.

Hayate was nearing a mental breakdown when she tried to force him to take time off, and the only reason she didn't crash down was because Shirou was able to pick up the signs. This isn't the first time that happened anyway.

I've been thinking about this for a while though. I've been thinking about writing a 'Shirou goes to pay his respects to his dad and sister's grave'. It would start out as a light story with him telling them about his life on Mid-Childa, and the antics of his three wifes and their kids together.( remember when I wrote he knocked them up? I might get back on that track later)

But in the end it goes more serious as Shirou realized, and confesses to his fathers grave, that in all the years his family had slowly started to push away his ideal of saving everyone. He confesses that in the last few missions he has kept more value to his promises to his lovers and children to come home safe, slowly suppressing his oath to save everyone.

In the end he will tearfully confess that he won't be able to carry on his will as an hero of justice, even though he promised his father to do so. This realization causes him to crash down in front of the family grave, where the girls find him later.

In the end Shirou will live with the guilt of choosing the life of a few over those of many, just like he did in HF. Nanoha, Fate and Hayate know this, and although they are grateful for him for doing it they too will forever carry the guilt of forcing him to destroy his Ideal.

In the end he still has no value of his own. But he replaced the Ideal of saving everyone into the Ideal of 'saving' those who form his family, even though many more might suffer because of this.

    Love hurts people. (-_-)

But it is in the same trend as the original 3 routes:

Fate: By choosing your Ideals both Saber and Shirou are separated.

UBW: SHirou knows his Ideals are impossible, but will still chase it. he hooks up with Rin ( and saber) and the moment of choosing is postponed.

HF: By choosing for Sakura you discard the ideal that has sustained you as far as you got, But in the end you rescue the woman you love.

Shirou and the girls will realize that the wish of forming a family together and his ideal of sacrificing himself to save other are bound to clash at some point.

When that time comes the strength of those bonds will decide if Shirou falls in battle, crushing the hearts of his loved ones, and possible leaving behind at least one child (Vivio) and possible more.

It would be sad if Shirou was to outlive his wifes though ( blame avalon's reidual effect)

Though with Fate he managed to reunite with Saber in Last Episode just before sinking into the despair of his ideals.

    *reads fraggle's post*

    *Kotomine Smile*

I have no idea why I'm in such a schadenfreude mood today, but that scratched that itch nicely. I can see that happening very, very easily. The breakdown sounds marvelous, as does the mingling feelings of relief and regret on the parts of the girls.

Shirou is either going to die as he lived, risking his life for that of others, or he is going to die with the guilt and shame of failing his father and living for his family and only his family.

Yep, no happy ending to be found here. Not at the end of their journey.

But perhaps you can split the two. They grow old together, but the TSAB has an emergency and they're sending people on what is essentially a suicide mission. Shirou decides that he won't die as Kiritsugu did. He will die on the battlefield in defense of others. Perhaps one last chance to be the Hero of Justice he dreamed of being. Whether the Aces decide to join him...that's another story. Either way would certainly be revealing of their character and the people they've become.

I can't see Shirou dying in his sleep as anything but tragic though. It denies his very nature. It ought to be tragic, sobering, and heart wrenching, but ultimately his proper end.

I also have to idea of Alaya offering him a chance to be victorious in exchange for his service, but Shirou denies it and chooses to die with those he loves and trust the next generation. Alaya retreats, and Shirou charges into certain death.

If there's one thing I don't like about that scene in my head, it's Alaya getting refused. I do not see it making the offer unless it's certain it would be accepted. Also, it already has EMIYA. The plot holes could probably filled, but it'd take quite a bit of handwaving.

...Damn, I just hit on another bit of tragedy. Shirou accepts and becomes and Counter Guardian, but each Ace leverages their individual afterlife to spare Shirou from eternal hell. But each Ace doesn't realize that the others are doing to same thing. So Shirou gets a miracle, the three Aces get the same miracle, and The World gets three new Counter Guardians for the price of two.

    ...Wow that's evil of me.

Fraggle, thats a brilliant... No, Heart wrenching idea...

    Please proceed.

I also thought about another reason for Shirou's self-destructive nature. Remember that he's origin AND affinity are both 'Sword'. He might as well be a living sword and it might affect Shirou's behavior. Sword's are dangerous, but they are also disposable. Emphasis on the disposable part.

"Perhaps, I really am a sword in the end." he chuckled, as the teared eyes of his lovers looked at him. Without saying a word they embraced him from all sides, as Nanoha spoke to him.

"You might be a sword, unwilling to bend, sharp and destructive. But that sword will get strained to the point of breaking if wielded continuously."She spoke, as they held him in their arms.

"If you really are a sword, then we will become your scabbard." Fate continued. "A scabbard that will temper the sword known as Emiya, and protect it for the battles that must be fought, and guard it against those that would wield it for battles not their own."

"We will never allow you to become disposable." Hayate concluded. "Our fates have been intertwined form the beginning after all."

"We will never allow you to break before we do."

And Shirou knew that they would keep that oath.

    Saying goodbyes

Anyone remember that snippet where I killed Shirou?

Emiya Vivio was sitting on the lap of her father in the local park. It was late in the afternoon as the sky had already turned orange, the sun starting to disappear behind the horizon. She didn't remember getting here, or what they were doing here. When she asked how they got here, her father simply smiled at her.

"This is a dream silly, don't worry about those things."

She snuggled against him as he petted her head, only for her to look up at him as he suddenly stopped. He looked tired to her, not really showing it to her, but it felt as if he would fall over any minute now.

"Daddy, are you okay? " She asked, as she grew worried. Her father was always full of energy, and seeing him like this somehow scared her.

"Vivio" He grabbed her shoulders as he spoke softly, but with an serious face. "Daddy is gonna be gone after this dream."

"When will you be back?" She innocently asked him. a small smile grew on his face at her confuses expression.

"Daddy wont be coming back." he told her as disbelief filled her face.

"Why? Did I do something wrong? Is it because I didn't eat enough greens? I'm sorry for whatever I've done, so please don't go Daddy!" She begged him as tears streamed across her cheeks. Shirou hugged her, as she cried against his chest.

"Sssh." he whispered in her ear. "It's not your fault. Daddy just wanted to save as many people as he could, to become an hero of justice. But it looks like daddy wasn't able to safe himself."

She rubbed her eyes with her hands as he continued.

"Daddy's sorry that he's leaving you and your mothers alone. I never wanted to see any of you cry." He slowly stood up. "But in the end I wanted to protect the things precious to us. This world, which is our home, and everyone in it needed an hero to save them."

    "Daddy...."

"Be a good girl Vivio". He smiled at her. "Take care of your mothers, eat your greens, stay away form strangers and....,and,,,"

He chocked up for a moment, before deciding on what to tell her.

"No matter what happens, never lose sight of those you care about. Protect those persons, and everything else will be fine."

Vivio nodded at him, as she noticed that the park was fading away. She tried to grab him, only for her hands to grab empty air as he faded away.

For a moment she was alone in the empty dreamland, before she woke up in her own bed.She cried for the next few hours in Arf's arms, who had raced toward her room when she started crying. Vivio couldn't explain why she felt so sad, and why her heart hurt so much. Arf needed no explanation as soon as Fate finally reached the surface of the planet. Soon the stories of the battle started leaking trough the unofficial channels.

Outside the walls of the apartment people celebrated their victory against an enemy who had nearly brought them to their knees.

Inside the apartment a single familiar tried to console a small girl, who had just lost her beloved father......

You're cruel Fraggle, anyone told you that before?

On the other hand i'm impressed by the pace your writing these snippets. Sure these latest ones have been a bit shorter but they have much shorter intervals between them.

'King of Snippet's, do you have enough ideas at your disposal?' A bit lame, yeah...

I know I'm cruel, but I needed to get that out of the way for more humorous snippets.

I'm not really a king of snippets. I'm more like lancelot, because I can turn any simple idea into a snippet.

@Fraggle: The two months of forced leave Shirou has to go through, maybe one like this most recent snippet except a bit further after his death, one of him having man-talk w/ Erio, one of him w/ Teana during her training, one of him on business/a mission w/ Caro and/or that purple-head knight whose name evades me from the Saint Church...

I can keep going, if you want.

Okay, then let us test out your limits, fraggle. Write a snippet where ORT enters Mid-Childa. You don't have to do it, but it would be an interesting thing to see.
