If there's somebody who's read the JP and can correct me, that'd be great, but the impression I got so far is that the english TL is making him out to be a lot more, uh... abrasive than he is in JP. English TL seems to go out of their way to make him a pain in the arse, probably to contrast with the moments of growth, whereas in JP he seems a lot more of a bumbler than the arseholish boss you hate.

Ehh, I can't really see it. Even if they shifted the tone, the theme still seems like, "show off the good side of this asshole, to make him the commander he could be", which is fine, but its turning into kissing his ass a little too quickly for that type of setup.
He should earn his stripes, then get the nakama hugs and shit, not "oh, what he really means is he likes you, don't mind the bumbling and overly harsh stupid crap". If you're trying to teach someone to grow, then becoming a sycophant isn't really doing it. Turns into making excuses for shitty behavior.

I think that's more a case of personally having bad experiences with the type. Japanese fans consider his tantrums just another moe/charm point because they are not really meant to be serious after all.

I think it's a joke about how he was actually short when he was alive, everyone was a giant to him.

Coming from Fortissimo, a lot of the names from Wagner's operas are familiar to me here. Seeing's Sigurd's NP though, it does disappoint me slightly to not see Bölverk being a giant meteor to the face :3

Maybe Wagner's operas get used a lot because it can expand or provide a parallel to most of proper Norse mythology or something, I dunno. :|
