I mean, Carnival Phantasm ep.1 is easily in the top 3 episodes if not a contender for best CP episode outright. The first ten minutes alone were better comedy than everything this successor (not to say "pretender") has shown yet.

It's telling that the best jokes (Ritsuka being in mad love with Red Hare or Lancelot in drag, for instance) are the few ones that are brand new.

I hate to put it this way, but it ultimately feels, when comparing this to the original Carnival Phantasm, like the best way to express my feelings is the old, tired 'Soul versus Soulless'.

There are many new approaches they might have taken taking advantage of what you can do in animation but not in a gacha. Why not to make a piece about how the eccentricities of the Servants feel to a random Chaldea employee, for instance? Even an animation showcase acid trip from whatever plot device, overused as it is in other comedies, would have been interesting to see play with the GO motifs and characters, and again, because it's not the kind of thing the game format can show.

This lacked a solid staightman to anchor the comedy too. The old CP used Shirou and Shiki well enough for this, even with their own quirks, and Mash kinda works here, especially when confronted with Ritsuka and Lancelot, but I don't know, it doesn't feel like it suffices?

It's nowhere as bad as Riyo's manga has gotten of late, and it's never outright tiresome, but it feels like it goes through the motions for the most part.

The old CP had its share of overly stale memes and the telenovela Sakura skit was purely unfunny because it was entirely mean spirited (the poll hot take when Sakura was flatly beating Medusa on the international poll they had at the time was tone deaf and frankly mostly liked from people who disliked Sakura at the time). The stalking episode was funny even if it used stale yandere memes.
The Luddite Rin jokes were stale, the Saber being hungry jokes were stale but the femdom Saber Alter was good. I could go on, but while some parts were good the original had many stale memes and overused jokes.

What might be going on for the current one is that FGO is very comedic already, like we get the same tone of an April Fool's event all the time from its events, so a comedy show based on it, would imo, seem redundant if using the same jokes or not having more varied interactions.
So my take is that Carnival Phantasm worked so well because back then we were fairly dry on content and April Fool's was once a year.

The telenovela Sakura episode dragged a bit long and wasn't terribly funny, but the idea itself of ~Unmei no Shoujo, Sakura~ was inspired (and hilarious).

Hungry Saber and Luddite Rin weren't nearly as overused back then, so they were still funny. Kawaii Kowai Goth Loli Waitress was a peak, but CP was uniformly fairly strong in my opinion, with the only episodes that really felt tone-deaf being the Date Plan ones (both ordinary and Extra version).

Most of the stale CP memes weren't stale when CP did them.

"Lancer died!" for instance, was outright started by it since before Lancer's deaths in every route were treated just like those of Gilgamesh, Medea, Heracles, EMIYA and Kojiro, who also always died no matter what.

Also, no matter what other flaws may the Sakura segment have, Shinji as an Internet troll makes up for them.
