Do you guys think it would have been a more worthwhile project, or have less weighed against it if it was a longer and bigger Riyo learning FGO anime adaption rather than this?

I like Grand Carnival, but I won't lie, if they did like a full Riyo with his OC servants doing mad bullshit and Gudako being horny evil incarnate, I would pay in blood to see that.

I would prefer the Riyo one because as trite and just unfun I think it is at this point… it’s something different and isn’t quite just FGO reddit the anime.

While my first initial feelings were that it is actually in fact, a soulless and terrible nostalgia pander attempt...

Saying it's like a FGO event animeified and just more of what we have, in a set up that invites comparison with Take Moon/Carnival Phantasm when it really can't be the same thing does make it unfortunate in a different way.

Less weighed against it, certainly. I wouldn't watch it and be just fine with it if that was the case.
More worthwhile project... I mean, in the sense that it wouldn't have killed the dream of a real CP season 3, sure.

Eh, I wouldn't be so sure about it being that much different, Riyo Gudako is after all one of the biggest reddit memes out there
The gudako on episode 1 wasn't as extreme a Riyo's but I think you can see certain influence there on her characterization. Personally, I'm both hoping it stays at that level and dreading it won't

Gonna have to agree with seadragon and fishrin. This is just an anime original fgo gag event. theres an overabundance of this kinda content in fgo already since most content in the game itself is just gags and memes.

It's telling that the best jokes (Ritsuka being in mad love with Red Hare or Lancelot in drag, for instance) are the few ones that are brand new.

I hate to put it this way, but it ultimately feels, when comparing this to the original Carnival Phantasm, like the best way to express my feelings is the old, tired 'Soul versus Soulless'.

There are many new approaches they might have taken taking advantage of what you can do in animation but not in a gacha. Why not to make a piece about how the eccentricities of the Servants feel to a random Chaldea employee, for instance? Even an animation showcase acid trip from whatever plot device, overused as it is in other comedies, would have been interesting to see play with the GO motifs and characters, and again, because it's not the kind of thing the game format can show.

This lacked a solid staightman to anchor the comedy too. The old CP used Shirou and Shiki well enough for this, even with their own quirks, and Mash kinda works here, especially when confronted with Ritsuka and Lancelot, but I don't know, it doesn't feel like it suffices?

It's nowhere as bad as Riyo's manga has gotten of late, and it's never outright tiresome, but it feels like it goes through the motions for the most part.
