I havent read it, i've got some tolerance for bullshit but this one sounds way past my tolerance level. But I have plenty of friends that read both the LN and WN, and i've gotten pretty mixed answers on how you're supposed to react to the MC. My understanding is that he's slowly turned into a better person but it isn't nearly as harsh on his disgusting bullshit as it should be, and it never outright calls him out like ReZero does for Subaru.

If there's any Mushoku Tensei fans here I'm sure they'll be able to give a better assessment.

I'm a Rance fan, I enjoyed Venus Blood Frontier, and even so Mushoku Tensei sounds just way too much for me.

Well, I can't enjoy the Rance games but only because they're not voiced. These are not the days of original Tsukihime and Fate/stay night anymore. I expect voices in most VNs, at least for the MCs. Yes, I'm aware that the bioweapons in Sadistic Blood aren't voiced, but again, I wouldn't consider henchmen MCs.

I never played Rance but there's a big difference between porn and a story about self-improvement that expects you to seriously follow and root for its protagonist.

Specially when said protagonist in the serious story is a child groomer who hasn't changed at all after getting his literal second chance in life.

That's the thing. Rancei isn't just porn. It's apparently as serious as MT, given X is a super long narrative-focused game and all the games form an overarching narrative that isn't about the porn. Rance expects you to like the titular rapist as much as MT expects you to like Rudeus
And even if Rance was porn, the separation of porn and not porn in tastes is weird. You're still following and reading an MC who is a rapist in Rance. Look man, a pedo and a rapist are both shit so that's why the comparison confuses me. Like I can understand MT putting off normal people, but putting of the kind of person who reads long franchises of rape hentai? That's where I'm lost

Venus Blood, like Eiyuu Senki, is a solid tactical RPG. I'm pretty sure that the same can be said for Rance, though I've never played it. As for rooting for its protagonist, in Souten Kouro, you're supposed to root for Cao Cao, and while they did get rid of that part of Romance of the 3 Kingdoms where he kills his uncle by oath, they added in a part where it turns out that he was the one to provoke the Yellow Turbans into rebellion by taking advantage of their superstitious nature, all to give himself an excuse to build an army (because he received intel that Dong Zhuo was building an army discreetly, and he, Cao Cao, did not want He Jin to take credit for "exposing the traitor").

Oh, and speaking of funerals, Rudeus, in his past life, did not attend his parents' funeral, due to trauma about going outside. Cao Cao's first wife, according to Souten Kouro, was the musician hired to play at his grandfather's funeral. They "consummated" before his grandfather's body was even in the ground. They also consummated before his grandfather's body.

It's hard for me to dive deep into that comparison when I haven't experienced Rance, but just from the discourse around both series you can clearly see how the expectations of both works are not the same at all.

I'll leave it at that though, I don't particularly care about either to continue defending Rance and shitting on Mushoku, even though Mushoku does deserve to be shit on lol

There's a difference between antihero protagonists and villain protagonists. Mainly, the antihero has a noble goal they're working towards even if they take a dishonourable path to get there. Villains just do things because they want to. Shield Hero just wants to get home and got burned by the system so he no longer trusts it, while Light Yagami just has a God Complex. From what I've seen the MT protag is firmly in that second group, with a tragic backstory, but nothing to drive him to making whatever horrible choices he does.

It's more like MT has caught the attention of more general audiences who didn't know what they were getting into, while Rance remains hentai OVAs and a non-Steam VN and people know to expect Rance's a rapist. I assure you, the discourse for Rance'd resemble MT if it got a well animated TV adaptation like MT has.
Not like expectations change the fact Rance expects you to like the rapist and even masturbate to his rape. Like, MT's fanservice is limited to panty shots so far (and a very brief scene of Roxy masturbating). Compare that to rape sex scenes.

Having higher conquest points than reign points in chaos route of Venus Blood Frontier makes even me uncomfortable. Even I have lines. That being said, I am OK with having higher reign points than conquest points in chaos route or going either way in law route.

I'm not sure Alicesoft even fully expects you to masturbate to most of the ero in Rance games since a lot of the eroscenes take a weird comedic turn with a rock remix of the east german anthem playing. Their other games have a lot more erotic H-scenes. Rance the character is also very tongue in cheek, and the games are in tone somewhat of a dark comedy. A serious depiction of a sex offender is much harder for me to swallow than the meme shit going on with Rance.
