    Seventh Heaven [Assumption]

Humans look up to and dream of something beyond the pale blue sky.

They dream of kingdoms filled with spirits and beasts and gods who watch over the world.

Kingdoms of dreams and fantasy and wonder.

These kingdoms of human imagination are known as heavens.

    Heavens are places of miracles.

Miracles are impossibilities outside the grasp of mankind.

Mankind wishes for miracles with prayers and songs.

Yet, these kingdoms of miracles lie beyond the grasp of mankind. They are left to toil in worlds of dust beneath the heavens.

There are those that reach for the heavens. Magus, spellcasters, witches, who bend the
    blood
    energy
of the world to their will to create minor miracles known as magecraft. Mankind creates miracles through technology, twisting the
    bone
    materials
    of the world into miracles.

All this to achieve heaven on Earth.

Yet still, the heavens remain shut to them.

    At least, they did.

A strange incident is taking place. It is spoken of as whispers and rumors. They say that the gates of heaven have opened once more in Japan.

You are Menodora Strauss. The third child of a magus family. Yet you lack any capability of magecraft. A child who stands the furthest from miracles. Your sister, a talented magus, has taken you along with her while she investigates these rumors of the strange miracle known as:

It had been four hours since Elle left the hotel room.

That was four hours of Menodora sitting around this hotel room in a ridiculous schoolgirl uniform, waiting for her to get back so they could finally get lunch. At this point, they’d be eating dinner.

Menodora flopped boredly onto the bed, staring up at the luxurious hundred-dollars-a-night drywall trying to think of why she agreed to go on this trip. Elle had claimed it would be a ‘good bit of sisterly bonding.’ Menodora could smell bullshit from a mile away, but she still agreed.

Some friend had called her, a local and probably a magus. Menodora had no idea what it was about, but Elle had practically skipped out the door, calling over her shoulder that she’d be back soon.

They had very different ideas of what ‘soon’ was.

    Menodora sighed.

Nothing else could be expected from her older sister.

Crawling to the edge of the bed, Mennie reached into the nightstand. A box of Lucky Strikes greeted her hand and she shook the box open. A lonely stick rolled into her palm.

    “Damn.”

She had brought these from home only two days ago. She had no idea if they sold Lucky Strikes in Japan and she didn’t want to try any new brands.

With a sigh, she slipped the cigarette between her lips, pulled out an old Zippo lighter, and set the tip smouldering. She was 99% sure she wasn’t supposed to be smoking in here, but she couldn’t find the energy to care at the moment. She’d apologize for any inconvenience later. Right now, she needed something to calm her nerves.

Warm smoke filled her mouth with flavors of roasted nuts and cancerous chemicals on her tongue. She breathed deep, letting it fill her lungs with poison, and breathed out, filling the air with the smell of cheap cigarettes.

Menodora sat there for a few minutes, breathing in and out, letting the smoke calm her. By the time she felt her frustration was gone, the cigarette had burnt down to a nub. She flicked the end into a half-empty cup of coffee. Now, the room was filled with smoke and silence.

    Mennie glanced at the clock.

    5:30pm.

She should probably do something besides sitting around the hotel room. It was supposed to be a fun trip, after all.

[1] Elle’s not coming back any time soon. Go get your own food.

    Note

The reboot you've all been waiting for. It took an entire year but I'm back and I'm determined to finish what I started this time around. A reboot of Seventh Heaven. I hope you enjoy.

Voting will close in three hours.

Even if it is a hollow center covered by a so-called cutesy shell, acknowledgement of that shell is still something worth reflecting on.

    Mennie's back ! \o/

1., we're told that Elle said she wanted to go on a trip with Mennie to bond but clearly she doesn't need Mennie to do whatever she's doing. And it interests me ! At least to know what Mennie is thinking about her relationship with Elle, does she see it as a real attempt to connect over something that failed because she cannot participate or just a pretext to get her sister out of her room while she does the Important Things ? Or a mix of both maybe ?

hmmmm 3 would have the highest chance for a certain fateful encounter, but tbh 1 is just too enticing.

    Prologue: Yokohama II

    Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan
    January 14th, 2018
    Yokohama Royal Park Hotel
    5:30pm

    ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾

Menodora’s stomach growled. Well that was that decision made, wasn’t it?

Unfortunately, cigarettes couldn’t be considered a part of a healthy and balanced diet, so Menodora needed to actually go out and get some food.

She could have ordered room service but she didn’t want to risk trying to order food over the phone in a language she barely spoke. The restaurant in the building was closed for renovations, so that wasn’t an option. Fortunately, Menodora had an idea of where to go for a quick bite.

Riding down the elevator to the lobby, she stopped out onto the plaza that sat above the highway. From there, she could see the city.

The high-rises form a valley with the street. The lights of Cosmoworld in the distance with flares of neon blues and reds. The sky above was darkening into blacks and greys as clouds gathered. It would probably rain soon. Hopefully not too soon. Mennie didn’t have an umbrella and didn’t want to waste money on a cab for a short walk.

She had no idea where that niche club Elle wanted to go to was, but she had spotted a quaint little eatery not far from the hotel in the cab ride from the airport. She could get something to eat there.

With her destination set, Menodora set out into the Japanese night. She had never been to Japan before. Her knowledge of the place and culture was limited to what was necessary to purchase figures. She bought them and painted them to sell online. Some people liked figures but didn’t have the skill and patience to do it well, and some liked to get custom jobs done. Outside of that, Japan was as foreign as it got for Mennie.

The same couldn’t be said for her sister or any of her family, really. Before she was born, the Strausses barely lived in their home in Pennsylvania and had been to Japan seven times, amongst the dozens of other countries they traveled to. Her brother and sister had spent their childhoods nation-hopping alongside her parents. They knew a dozen languages, been to over a hundred different countries, and had friends around the world.

All of that came to an end when Mennie was born.

She had been born sick. Too sick to risk travelling like they used to. Her parents settled the family down in their family home in Pennsylvania to take care of her.. When she was younger, they always talked about travelling again, but those days never came. After Lio left, hope dwindled and outright disappeared when Elle moved out. Now, any travelling that happened was done solo.

That was how Elle had sold Mennie on this in the first place. The beginning of a ‘sister world tour’ she had called it. Their first stop was supposed to be in London, but those plans changed and now they were in Japan. If Mennie cared to guess, it had to do with whatever Elle had run off to deal with. She’d seemed distracted since they got here.

Where they were going didn’t really matter to Mennie. To be honest, she didn’t care much about travel. Seeing the world had very little appeal to her. However, if Elle wanted to bring her little sister along on a world tour, then she couldn’t say no. She never did.

    ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾

    “Miss?”

Menodora started at the gentle call. She hadn’t realized how much she’d zoned out, now standing in front of the cafe she’d seen earlier. Tashtego written in plain English, the reason she had noticed it. A young woman in a uniform was leaning out of the door, giving her a curious look.

“Are you a customer?” Her English was accented but understandable.

“Oh, yes.” Menodora nodded and went inside. She took her seat and ordered a drink from the young woman; orange soda. While she waited, she pulled out her phone. No calls, not even a text from her missing sister.

Not surprising in the slightest. Unless she was in her direct sight, Elle rarely seemed to think about Mennie. They only talked on the phone when she called her mom or dad first. They saw each other when she visited home and Menodora was standing right in front of her. They only spent time together when Elle wanted to.

That was how it was in their family. Mennie watched TV with her mom because her mom wanted to spend time together; she read books with her dad because he wanted someone to talk to about them, and she did it. It made them happy so she did it. Whether she wanted to would be an irrelevant question.

She didn’t want to be short, but she was. She didn’t want to be fragile, but she was. She didn’t want to be eating alone in a foreign country, but she was. She didn’t want to be mundane, but she was. What was simply was.

The waitress returned with Mennie’s soda and asked for her order. Not wanting to risk something upsetting her stomach, she ordered an omelette with rice. The expectant way the waitress nodded told her that was a common option.

Menodora’s life with her family was a lot like that waitress. Regardless of how she felt about this restaurant, her colleagues, or the customers, she simply had to do as she was asked. Welcome people to the restaurant, write down orders, bring out the food. She played her role as a waitress to make it through the day and lead a happy, peaceful life. Menodora played her role as the little sister and youngest daughter for the same reason.

Did it make her happy? Yes. As long as her family was happy, she was happy. If they were unhappy with her, then she’d be failing in her role and then there would be no point to her. Thus, she always does as they ask of her and they loved her for it. Some people got less than that for doing more, so she couldn’t complain.

They annoyed her sometimes. Lio, her older brother, pissed her off most of the time being the snarky bastard he was, but she rarely voiced that. Usually, he poked at her, then her mother or Elle would come to her defence. That was the gag, the role she fit in the family. Any feelings she harbored about them stayed where they couldn’t hear her. Instead, she focused on what she loved about them and gave voice only to that.

She was already worthless, so she tried not to devalue herself any more than that.

    ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾

Soon enough, the waitress brought Menodora’s meal and she dug in. The omelette, apparently called omurice, was bigger than she thought, so it took longer than expected to eat. Once she was done, she dug some of the yen Elle had given her out of her sweater pockets and handed them over. The waitress came back with a copy of the check and some change.

The coins were strange. More specifically, one of the five 10-yen coins was different from the others. Rather than a dull coppery color, it was golden and there were no numbers on it. It wasn’t from age since the rest of the markings were on it. It was more like a misprint. Then again, for all she knew, the other four coins were the strange ones.

After thanking the waitress, Menodora stuffed the change into her pocket and left the eatery. It was fully night now with the streetlights on. The clouds were getting thicker and starting to move. Soon, it began to rain.

    “Damn it.”

Pulling her sweater up over her head, Mennie ran through the rain, which began to pour harder and harder. The storm had become utterly torrential in very little time, unleashing curtains of bitter cold rain. Thunder and lighting screamed in the distance with winds that nearly blew Mennie off her feet.

Through the rain, Menodora could barely see ahead of her but she could just make out the sign pointing towards the bridge across the road to the hotel. Soon she’d be out of this damn storm and she could drip her way up to the hotel room for a nice warm bath.

She struggled her way down the sidewalk with cars splashing her with wave after wave of water. The few other people outside were beginning to run into nearby stores and under alcoves as the wind and rain grew worse. It was like a hurricane had appeared out of nowhere.

Menodora started to think about hiding as well when she heard a screeching like the stings of a horror film.

Someone screamed something she didn’t understand.

    Ki o tsukete!

    Menodora was flying.

    ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾

Agonizing heat screamed through her chest and she was falling.

    Where was she falling from?

The ground met her ungently. Something cracked. Something was warm spreading against her head. Was that the rain?

She tried to get up but her legs were asleep. No. She couldn’t feel her legs. She just stopped halfway down.

Her chest hurt though. Her chest was on fire. Breathing was agony and if felt like there was something in her throat, but she couldn’t get enough to cough it out.

She turned her head and the world swam.

People were standing over her. But she couldn’t see them clearly.

    They were blurry.

    Everything was blurry.

    Everything hurt. Except her legs.

More blurry people were coming. They were saying things. Yelling things. It was still raining but they were standing over her in the rain. Like umbrellas.

She tried to talk but no words came out. Only gurgling and blood.

    Oh.

    Mennie was dying.

Something had hit her. A truck. A truck had hit her on the sidewalk? It must’ve slipped off in the rain. And now she was dying.

Just her luck. Hit by traffic on a sidewalk. Pathetic.

    At least Elle wasn’t here.

But she wanted Elle to be here. She wanted Lio to be here. Her dad. Her mommy.

But Mennie never gets what she wants.

Mennie felt her body getting colder and the world getting darker and darker.

    And then there was light.

It was everywhere. The blurriness faded from Menodora’s vision but she couldn’t see anything but the light from the sky, growing brighter and brighter like the sun was crashing into the Earth.

And she could feel herself moving again. Rising. Pulled up by her sweater. Up past the people, past the buildings, into the sky that was burning gold.

She couldn’t see. Was this what dying was like? Instead of endless darkness, it was endless blinding light? It hurt!

She had to close her eyes. When she did, she found peace in the darkness and felt herself drifting into unconsciousness, away from the terror of the light. And as her mind drowned in blessed sleep, she heard thoughts that were not her own.

“You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?”

    First Heaven: Beneath the Flowers

    ???

You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?
The world of dust is a cruel storm.
Its inhabitants are but glass in its winds.
    You have been broken.
But now, salvation shall be yours.
In heaven, you shall find glory.
Or you shall find hell born anew.
    Do not break.
    Rise.

    ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾

    Where was she?

Menodora bolted upright, panting, twisting around as her last memories snapped back into her mind. The storm, the truck, the light. She frantically patted herself down, searching for any sign of injury and only finding herself as healthy and whole as she ever was.

    What was going on?

Rising on shaky knees, Mendora stood up and surveyed the area around her. As far as she could tell, she had awoken in a garden. Vibrant was the best world to describe the place, as if she had been placed inside of avant-garde painting. Flowers cluttered every corner the eye could see from the lowest bush choked with rose to the tree that hung over her head that was draped with purple buds.

Without thinking, Menodora began to walk away from the tree, deeper into the garden. She needed to find an exit or another person to explain where she was and how she got there.

Nothing was adding up. She remembered the crash and the golden light, and the words of the woman she’d seen before she woke up stayed in her head.

You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?

That had been a dream, yet the words refused to fade away even as she was conscious now. And that didn’t explain the light or why she was suddenly fine.

    ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾

The garden grew more beautiful the deeper the girl moved into it. She didn’t have a strong knowledge of botany, so recognizing the plants and trees was beyond her, but knowledge wasn’t necessary to appreciate beauty. It simply radiated from every leaf and stalk and branch directly into her being. Drooping trees with vines of green and yellow and purple buds hanging from the boughs like clothes drying in the sun. Tall grass that tickled her ankles. Even the air was like a strong perfume, almost enough to make her eyes water.

She had never felt such a way before. She figured this was what being inside of a fairy tale was like. Yes, this place was a storybook painted into reality by a hand skilled in the creation of beauity.

    ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾

Menodora clenched her teeth hard enough to hear the squeak against one another.

Something had to have brought her to this place. Something had to have fixed her and left her in this garden, but how and why? Nothing was making sense. Yet, this was all clearly happening. She was certain she hadn't gone crazy. Of course, when nothing made any sense and was all the same reality, then there was one obvious explanation. Anyone else in this situation would have been lost for a solution, running their mind in circles until they burnt out, but she had the great pleasure of knowing the skeleton key to all worldy nonsense.

    Magic.

The combination of nonsense and reality.

That meant that this garden, the light, her dream, all of it was likely the result of a magus. The reason and method were unknown, but it made sense. And if she had been taken away without her family's knowledge to this place, then this must have been a kidnapping.

    A kidnapping?

It wouldn't be the first kidnapping she'd heard of between magus. They were underhanded and tricky. If there was an enemy of her family, and she knew that they had many, then she would be the perfect target to take. She would've thought her family would've tried to keep their cripple of a daughter out of the eye of the Moonlit World, but who knew? Regardless, she was the weakest link in the chain and Yokohama was a perfect time to take her. It was the first time she'd left the house in two years.

Honestly, it made too much sense and it was a bit of relief to have an answer. She might be wrong, but having a possibilty was better than the unknown. It almost made her relax.

    ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾

The young woman frolicked through the grass and the bushes, picking at the leaves and sniffed the petals, softer than feather down and smelling of sweet nectar. A song, a hum tha resonated with her soul, hung on the breeze that brushed her with warm air, setting a buzz across her skin.

Her body was set to move with the song and the breeze, uncaring of anything besides its own satisfaction. Even on clumsy feet that rarely saw more than a step a day, she moved with the grace of a dancer that would dazzle the audience of barked faces and petal covered smiles. She was a vision witin the garden and she knew that insude and out.

The atmosphere of the garden, cozy as the warmth of a fire after the stinging bite of winter, untwisted the knots that rested inside her, replacing them with an alien sensation of comfort that won the sweest of sighs from her. A small smile broke across her lips.

This place. For some reason, this place made her feel ha-

    ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾
Menodora froze. Her lips curled back down into a frown.

What was she doing? She had no idea where she was right now. Walking into a garden potentially owned by a magus of an unknown nature was beyond idiotic bordering on suicidal if they wre hostile. She knew that yet she felt the urge to keep moving deeper.

Was it a siren effect, she wondered, meant to lure her in?

Looking around, Menodora couldn’t see any sign of the tree she’d woken up under. She had gone further than she had thought in very little time. That was concerning, especially as she could feel the urge to give into those feelings returning. Perhaps she should go back to that tree, the one she awoke under with the hanging purple flowers. Realistically speaking, it wasn't any safer than anywhere else in this garden, but it made her feel better to be somewhere familiar rather than here. Plus, if that was where she began, it might give a clue on how to get out of here. And anything was better than being lost in a strange forest.

Menodora began making her way back the way she came, at least, where she thought she had come from. Now that she was aware of the effect, she began actively fighting the urges that came to frolic fancifully through the flowers and being very glad her sister wasn’t here to see that. Then she might actually want a truck to hit her.

Now, paying more attention, Menodora started to notice how strange this place really was.

It was beautiful. No matter how much she tried to think otherwise, no matter what flaws she tried to find, Menodora could not consider the garden around her anything but the pinnacle of visual aesthetic. There was nowhere else in the world that could compare to this place. Everything was perfect. The flowers were perfectly symmetrical. The branches grass was the same length all around. She was sure if she had any skill at mathematics, she could measure the angles of the branches and find them to be perfect angles where they bent and curved. There wasn't a petal out of place nor a single fallen leaf.

Even as the concept of perfect beauty bothered her internally, she couldn't bring herself to dislike her surroundings. The beauty of the forest was impossible to deny.

And then there was the singing. A hum that hung on the wind. There were no words to it, yet she understood it all the same. Not a message but a sentiment of comfort and harborage that forced itself into her mind.

Focusing on the song brought on another struggled against the temptation to dance about like a maddened nymph in the forest, but she was able to determine the direction it was coming from, somewhere off to her left and growing quieter as she moved out towards the tree. That might mean there was a person that way. Perhaps the magus that stole her away.

Would it be better to confront them now rather than later? She was helpless anyway, so it didn’t matter what threats they made, she was going to submit regardless. But that might make it more inconvenient for her sister to save her la-

    “WAH!”

It was fortunate the grass was so soft around here, otherwise falling face first into it might’ve hurt more. Menodora flipped over to see what she’d tripped over.

A knapsack. Blue and boxy with a long black strap, looking as new as one she might see on an Amazon webpage for far too much money. What was it doing here, sitting in the middle of a magical garden?

Menodora backed away immediately. As a shut-in with little else to do besides consuming media, Menodora liked to think of herself as genre savvy. Anyone with a brain should be able to recognize that seeing objects that are outside the ordinary for an environment spelled some sort of a trap. Was it a bomb? A mimic? A teleportation device? Two of those were unlikely seeing as she just kicked it by accident, but it still called for cauton. It also called for consideration.

If this were a trap laid out by her kidnapper, then there might be a benefit to springing it. She was already helpless and trapped wherever she was. Clearly, if they had healed her injuries, they didn't want her dead or severly harmed. Springing the trap might bring her closer to her kidnapper, taking away the dreadful air of mystery behind this whole thing. Plus, it might help get this over with faster. It was not too different from her idea to find the singer of the song.

Of course, she could be terribly wrong and this trap could, at best, do her severe bodily harm. But she'd fetl plenty of pain before. What was a little more?

Item of worth inside, perhaps, but what's important is something to carry other things we find along the way.

    3. We're going to investigate whoever's leaving trashes in the middle of a forest, we will find them back and we will give them one hell of a heart-wrenching speech on respecting nature and fighting against environmental degradation. Park Ranger Mennie, go go !

    Beneath the Flowers II

    Unknown Location

    Unknown Time

    Status: Menodora Strauss
    Health: Good
    Energy: High
    Mental State: Stable

    ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾
Menodora did not consider herself an overly curious person. In most cases, she kept to herself and left well enough alone, having learned the virtues of keeping her nose out of other people’s things a long time ago. That being said, being lost in a magical forest after being hit with a truck felt like extenuating circumstances. Her only real hope was her sister finding her, but any answers to her many questions might help move that process along.

What if this was a trap? See the aforementioned ‘getting hit by a truck’. Her day could hardly get worse than that and whoever took her clearly didn’t want her dead. At least, she assumed so.

Regardless, the knapsack might have answers. There was nothing particularly special about its appearance. As far as she could tell it was a normal, bargain bin knapsack with a normal buckle to open and close it. Still, she approached with trepidation and cautiously undid the buckle before jumping back.

    Nothing happened.

“Don’t sound so disappointed,” she sighed. It was hard not to be though. Nothing happening left her with all the same questions. A complete waste of time. Though, perhaps something could be salvaged from the contents. She sat down and started rifling through the bag, hoping for something.

There wasn’t much. The knapsack apparently belonged to a student because it was full of school supplies. A blank notebook, pens, pencils, erasers, and a sharpener. It was strange that a schoolkid’s bag was sitting in the middle of a garden forest, but not exactly what she was looking for. However, in a secondary pocket, she found two much more interesting items.

The first was a carved wooden figure of a man wielding a sword, a katana to be more specific. The appearance was rough and unprofessional, but Menodora still searched it for any signs of writing or symbols. She knew a thing or two about magic that could use statues like this as a medium, but she couldn’t find a sign of anything she recognized. It was just a normal carved statue, a toy.

Putting the statue with the rest of the stuff, she pulled out the second item in the pocket. A lacquered wooden box painted pure black with a sliding cover she could lift off the bottom. She tried shaking it, but there was no sound outside of the top rattling against the bottom. There was definitely something inside of it, it was far too heavy not to be. She grabbed the top and began opening the box, when she heard a cough.

    It wasn’t her.

“Would you mind not opening that?”

A young man cast his shadow over her, looming with his hands in his pockets. Against the brilliant flowers, he was a tower of black and grey that sprung from the ground in the shape of a human.

He looked down at her with bottomless grey eyes that swallowed everything before them. She couldn’t even see her reflection in them. For most people, the almost judgemental way he gazed at her might’ve made them uncomfortable and small; fortunately, Menodora felt uncomfortable and small all the time.

To break the silence, she spoke.

    “Is this yours?”

    “Is it yours?”

He responded with a bite that made her wince. He had her there.

She slowly started putting everything back into the bag, occasionally stealing glances at the man. He didn’t move to help. He didn’t move at all, staying in the same relaxed stance he arrived in. His gaze never left her, even as she stood up and held the bag out to him.

He held still for a few more breaths before finally moving to take it back, slipping it over his right shoulder. The left held a long, thin case that went down to his legs. He didn’t bother looking at the bag any further, keeping his eyes locked on Menodora.

    “...”

    “...”

Were they having a staring contest now? He was just standing there, staring at her with that bored look on his face. She had expected him to say something when he got the bag back.

Maybe she should ask a question? She had a lot now. When waking up in a strange magical forest, he was hardly who she expected to find. Looking at him now, she was pretty sure he was wearing a Japanese school uniform. He looked Japanese as well, but he spoke English without a hint of an accent. What a strange young man.

    |CHOICES|

    1. Apologize for looking through the bag.
    2. Introduce yourself and ask his name.
    3. Be blunt and ask if he kidnapped you.

A Totally Normal High-School Student has arrived, what to do...

    3

(While 1 is the most sensible option here, better to errr -- clear things up, so to speak :VVV)
The Act of dozing off in the afternoon is a luxury indeed.
    Coffee would be nice, though.
