I would imagine that this is related to how changelings happen.

I wouldn't go that far, but that might be because I get a little bit twitchy whenever the subject of changelings come up, because people tend to misunderstand exactly what changelings are.

But this isn't "Castellan talks about how White Wolf fucked it" so I'll hold off unless people are interested in the folklore of changelings and what they are and aren't.

I don't have the brainspace to make it a loreposting document (although wahey I will be bringing it up in Ninth Wave because Saoirse is a changeling) but basically it's not quite the same as with fairies.

"Fairy" is a term that has been proliferated fairly widely, largely because of the Victorians. When they were running roughshod over Ireland doing Victorian Things, they noticed that the Irish had these things they called "Aos Síde" that were supposed to be spooky outsiders who lived beneath the earth that the locals didn't want to disturb, and because these beings lived Outside, the British assumed they must have been associated with nature like the fairies of Germanic folklore. The same process happened with, say, the yaksha of Hindu mythology and folklore and many of the various beings that are under the umbrella term of xian in Chinese mythology. Shove things in a fairy-shaped box, pretend it's all the same thing, so far so Victorian. Eventually what came out the other end of this was the Fairy Faith, which is a real thing in Irish folklore that's been adapted and interpreted largely by the Irish themselves, but that's out of my wheelhouse.

But changelings predate that sort of...integration of the Aos Síde into a different folklore spectrum. Changelings are supposed to be fairies left behind in place of children who are abducted to serve in the halls of the Aos Síde. They kidnap the child, but since they have a cruel sense of equivalent exchange, they leave behind one of their own children to be raised among humans. Over time, the differences with the changeling often become noticeable, and depending on the era, the solution is usually either "baptism" or "kill it with fire." The crucial thing here is that "changeling" refers to the child that is left behind among mortals - the child that's been abducted and integrated into Aos Síde society doesn't have a catchy name like that.

And the thing is...there's a fairly strong folkloric and historical case to be made that changelings were a "real" thing, in the sense that they could very well just have been children born with congenital or cognitive disabilities. Whether Downs syndrome or some other disability that leaves a physiological impression and also presents some degree of cognitive impairment or difficulty communicating, they could be interpreted as the behavior of a "changeling" and if judged to be too much of a burden on the community, well...the solution was usually pretty grim. There's a similar thing in Germanic folklore, especially Scandinavia, where they're called "troll-children."

The last incident in Ireland concerning a village murdering a person for being a changeling happened in the 20th century. This is why I get a little bit twitchy when changelings come up because there's a very strong chance that you're talking about a story built on the bones of dead disabled people. It's not that I think the concept is sacrosanct (I'd be a hypocrite if I said that, some of my favorite characters I've ever written are changelings), just that I think it needs a little bit of a gentle and informed touch to not come across as kind of crass.

hm good question i must do a more deeper resedrach but for this you would have to look at the hinduistic Yuga cicles , through interstingly the Jain have a similar hint on it related with Giants .
