On a different track, the news that Strange Fake is returning soon with another Volume has me going back to some old unfinished sheets regarding SF's Saber's associates to see if I can finish them before SF has a chance to show any (more) of them off.

The people who were close to him in life naturally. I have actually published some of them already, such as Saber's father who, not to toot my own horn but is one of my finer pieces.

I'm totally tooting my own horn here, but I'd like to shamelessly plug in my own rendition of John and Eleanor. Some of my finer pieces as well.

i started wondering if there are any "evil moon" tropes in mythology.
Because most moon deities I am aware of are more mystical, benevolent and stuff. But "lunacy" has a special origin after all, admittedly much later, but still

Well, there is a fair bit of ancient folklore about how contact with the full moon's light can turn you mad. Like the Diana stuff with Caligula.

Yeah, the idea of the Moon causing lunacy goes all the way back to the Ancient Greek. Also I remember reading from Plutarch's account which says that the Dark Side of the Moon is also called Hecate's Recess, and it is where souls of the dead are tortured and turned into evil spirits, or something along these lines.

My armchair historian guess is that from ancient times, people feared the darkness, but the moon brought light to that thing they feared, so moon deities are commonly depicted as benevolent. That may also be why there are so many "evil" deities representing the lack of sun (such as that Chinese legend about the sun being eaten by a dragon, or Ra fighting Apophis every night so that the sun may rise), but not so many evil legends about the moon being evil.

I'd say BnEl15's hit it quite on the mark. Another thing is that the Moon was a very useful tool in ye olde times; it was the core of most time-keeping systems, as the most periodic system that people could observe and account from. The Moon is a point of order for humans because it's so easy to build a system of time, and even numerical paradigms based on the Moon.

I can't really think of any lunar deities who are wholesale vile across all variations of their myths. Aside from the accounts in Greek myths where the gods did as the gods were to do, I can only think of maybe one deity who can conditionally fulfill the condition.
    That would be Chang'e. Her story has many variations, but all agree on a few factors;
    • She's the beloved wife of Houyi.
    • When Houyi shot down nine of the ten suns, the gods of Heaven granted him two pills of immortality, for him and his wife.
    • When Houyi was out one day, Chang'e consumed both pills, and ascended beyond the Heavens, coming to rest on the Moon for all eternity.

What's not agreed on is why Chang'e consumed the pills.
Some stories say that an apprentice of Houyi tried to steal them, and in a panic, Chang'e ate them both to prevent that.
Others say that Houyi became a tyrant, and she ate them both to prevent humanity from suffering forever.
And others still say she was just greedy and wanted double the pills for double immortality.
It's mostly that last one that I'm talking about here; where Chang'e was just coldhearted and really wanted to be superimmortal. Even then, she didn't really do anything particularly evil, she was just greedy and didn't give a single crap about her husband in that version of her myth.
She didn't massacre humans, dominate the land, or attack and dethrone God or anything.
She just ate a couple of pills.
Honestly, it's quite impressive how squeaky-clean a record lunar deities have when that's all the worst I can think of is.

Welp, new mission. Find an evil moon deity or just make one deity into one with the power of nasuverse bullshittery

I mean, Actaeon would probably have considered Artemis evil.

Also this had better not be a big elaborate leadup to a Sailor Moon joke.
