I never liked Harry Potter. Disliked the first movie and I also got the fourth book, I think, for some reason as a gift. Maybe cause it was new and they assumed I was actually following the series? Also I really hate their word for non magical people. It sounds so stupid to me.
You guys do realise Harry Potter was always a kids' book, right?
The legions of people I see who, having grown up, turn around and go "well now looking back it's obvious she's a hack and thebooks weren't that good to begin with"- No shit, it's twenty years later (jesus is it actually twenty years now? I'm ooooooooold) and it was always a series about the magic of magic, aimed almost entirely at kids who grew up with the series.

There are plenty of children's/YA books that I still enjoy as an adult

Saying "it's bad because it's for children" is an extremely stupid take for several different reasons
I did a reread of deltora quest a while back, those really felt like... myths or fairy tales to me due to the riddles and puzzles and stuff
I would more explain that with the fact that you're just much more easily impressed when you're a kid. Kids books are, quality wise, just like all other books: some are really good, some are really bad and most are just mediocre. The main thing is that as we age, our tastes develop and our critical thinking skills (hopefully) also develop. So it's natural for there to be a discrepancy between how much you enjoy stuff now and when you were a kid. Of course, a lot of kids books deal with subject matter and themes for kids, so normally older people don't really resonate with them. As asterism said though, that doesn't mean that you can't go back and find that a kids book tackle various subject matter, whether it be for kids or adults, in a sophisticated way and therefore really enjoy it. That takes writing skill, though, which not that many people have.
In my instance I remember loving Percy Jackson books when I was a younger, but when I tried to read some of Riordan's later books a couple of years ago...I honestly couldn't get that far. I guess I just outgrew the man's style.
Also FYI I read all the Harry Potter books, but even if you forced a gun to my head I couldn't tell you anything about them. I just don't remember one goddamn line from them. Nowadays I respect the movies a lot more, purely for the effort that went into the production, set design and special effects, if nothing else.
I actually respect the movies less. Not only for cutting plenty of things, but also for all the added JK-isms that weren't there in the books. Like as a friend pointed out to me recently, the Irish kid who's only really shown blowing things up. Or the fact that the Goblins=Jews becomes so much more obvious when you see the bank with a bunch of Stars of David on the floor.

To be fair, I think Seamus Finnigan got new life of his own in the movies, and the goblins = Jews comparison was Rowling's attempt to critique anti-Semitism. It kinda fell flat in the Deathly Hallows with Griphook, but the attempt was there. Rowling did better with werewolves as AIDS sufferers.
