It is my belief that Shinji does not exist solely to die painfully. Simply put, it is impossible for him to atone and become a good guy unless karma pays him back for all the evil shit he's done. Thus he gets horribly mauled to even things out and put him on the path to redemption. He's been tortured so much that he's actually become one of the more popular characters.

I don't necessarily mind Shinji surviving, but I feel that he does need at least some kind of karmic retribution for what he's done. I can accept his survival, but I can't accept him just living a normal life without ever making any attempt to atone for his abuse of Sakura.
Now you know how I feel about all these bloody post-UBW fics that treat Sakura as a fucking villain, or else ignore her entirely....I would have liked to read it, but now I can't.
