I do recall liking the huge turtle with an island on its back, forgot which gen that one was but it was my starter for that particular gen.

That's Torterra from Generation 4. It evolves from Grotle which evolves from Turtwig.

I'm still undecided re: Delphox (I think the stick thing looks stupid-yes, I understand the design implications but you don't see Quilladin Chesnaught carry a sword around do you?), but it doesn't deserve the shade it gets.

I mean, gen 8, sure, trash away. But gen 6 designs were fairly solid all round. (special mention to Greninja pulling a reverse Treeko by having two stupid-looking evos followed by an awesome one).

My favorite starter will always be Chimchar->Infernape, but my choices have been:

Torchic->Chimchar->Tepig->Fennekin/Froakie->Rowlet->Oshawott in Legends.

Literally not true though? Sure, some breeds were literally never seen again (Sunkern, Sentret, Hoppip, Phanpy and their evos) but others have become almost ubiquitous in how often they show up. Igglybuff, Cleffa, Pichu, and all the other baby Pokemon? Gen 2. Espeon and Umbreon? Gen 2. Sudowoodo, Togepi, Marill, Heracross, Corsola, Houndour, all commonly encountered in other games. Scizor, Crobat, Slowking, gen 2 evos of very common gen 1 Pokemon. And then there's the entire batch that got new evos later: Misdreavus, Murkrow, Yanma, Gligar, Snubull, Aipom... or the one that got a Mega, Ampharos... I've already quoted like half the list, gen 2 is only 100 Pokemon.

Gen 2's problem is that it followed Gen 1 even in-game. It uses the same league, it has the same evil team except they have no charismatic leader now, there are many Gen 1 pokémon roaming in the new region, leaving a lot of the cool new mons to late/post game, and that postgame is literally the Gen 1 region. On top of that the hardware limitations made it so features every other Gen had were missing from Gen 2, like the Safari Zone and the many simplified maps.

HGSS fixed a lot of these, yes. And guess what it's still the best game in the franchise to this day. But Gen 2 itself is swept under the rug because of the aforementioned issues.

Also, again, gen 2 brought a ton of new stuff that have since become baseline in newer games. Day/Night circle and associated events (this one keeps going back and forth), the Pokègear, rematchable trainers, held items, item evolutions beyond stones, friendship, breeding...

The overall roster isn't that that reoccurring either. You can't really count the new evolution of Gen 1 either since they're only there because the original Gen 1 is.

If they put out a game where you could get all 3 Johto starters I'd buy that game immediately.
