Spring 2022 Anime, AKA the Spy x Family Thread

Decided to check out the first couple of episodes of "Don't Hurt Me, My Healer!" since I was hearing such mixed things about it. If I had to describe it, it's like taking Konosuba and turning up both the wackiness and the whole "Party being jerks to each other" schtick up to eleven.

Definitely not everybody's cup of tea, but I'm enjoying it so far and am willing to stick with it for the time being.

Damn, things are progressing fast in Summertime Rendering. "Ushio" is back, shadow Shinpei knows the truth about the loops and the shadows are about to set their ominous plan into motion. I'm guessing Shinpei is going to have to suicide to get out of this (OP even shows him putting a gun to his head) as it feels like the shadows are already too close to completing their goals now. On the next iteration one of the most important things to do would be to avoid getting copied himself so they don't find out about the loop again.

Ushio's shadow (I presume that's what she is) is really cute and basically confirmed to be the white sheep amongst the shadows, genuinely believing she's the real Ushio and having no interest in killing humans to replace them. Some good psychology where Shinpei clearly badly wants to believe his childhood friend is real and came back from the dead but is forcing himself to be rational and look at things from a cautious viewpoint. That fakeout scene with Shinpei's shadow was so effective. For all the talk of shadows being indistinguishable from the original we haven't gotten a scene where a major character has been actually revealed to be one until now. Seeing him totally overtake the real Shinpei's mannerisms even making shocked and goofy reaction-faces before showing his cold-hearted true nature really drives in the terror of implacable predators that can perfectly imitate humans.

Knowing for sure that shadows inherit their hosts' memories really makes me wonder if there's any way to tell them apart, and if not the heroes will have a lot of trouble strategizing in the future (as even So's plan relies on not being copied after setting the "passcode"). Well actually there is one way that'd probably work but I doubt it'd be reliable. Using the camera that creates shadows to test if a human is one since presumably a shadow can't be copied off another shadow. But that'd have obvious bad consequences if they were the original (unless shadows are vulnerable right after being formed) and would rely on having that camera on hand as I doubt just any would work.

Is anyone else even following this show? I know it's locked on Disney+ but I'd expect a forum founded on a Japanese porn-game that's still never been officially translated in the West wouldn't be deterred by that.

The true measure of a good OP is how well it sells the show in just 90 seconds. By chance the OP to "Ya Boy Kongming" appeared in my YT recommended feed and thinking it was a rhythm game based on the thumbnail, I clicked on it and was instantly hooked and have binged the show to catch up. There's something about this show, it's not that the plot is intricately deep or the characters super unique...but the way the voice acting, animation and especially the music all comes together that really make it feel heartfelt. Just like Kids on the Slope, it makes me curious how the original manga will compare given that it was a soundless medium.

Here's hoping the show will get a dub and not go the way of several other music focused shows of the past ten years.

Damn did SpyxFamily go hard this episode. That entire escapade was a visual treat. Loved the heel.

I don't think I've seen a sports anime outside Aoahsi where the manger has this much character. Okay, that's not true, but all those ones are shows set outside highschool sports clubs, like Megalobox, Ippo and Ballroom. Also what a MILF. (fuck knowing anime am I older than her?) Wait, are those soccer cleats? They look way too round and dull. I always though soccer cleats were sharper, which is why we weren't allowed to use them in rugby. Don't want the guys who go down in a scrum ripped apart by their own team.

Kongming: wait is Kabetaijin supposed to be Lu Bu? He got his start with an album called Red Horse, and his biggest rival has a Guan Yu jacket?Granted my Three Kingdoms knoweldge is almost zero so I could be way off. LVL help me out.

While it's nice that it took five episodes for DDD get to the obvious CG shots, and they use it really sparingly, a part of me wishes this show could have been made in the 90's when that just wasn't an option. Especially with how stylistic it gets later on in the performance. Then again if I had my way everything would look a mid-late 90's Sunrise show. How do you even do an encore for a ballet? Repeat a specific song/movement? Just redo the entire act? As someone who spent time in Band, encores are tough, I can't imagine having to actually be physically active the whole time and then do one.

Well, apart from Kongming and Red Hare Kung Fu, are the other characters supposed to be references to 3 Kingdoms characters?

Oh is he Red Hare? My sub didn't translate his name, so I took him mentioning Guan Yu in the street fight to mean that he was supposed to be his stand in. I don't think outside Kongming anyone else is going to be explicitly 3 Kingdoms, but more allusions. So the guy who supported Kabeteijin and constantly urged him on being named Red Hare makes him seem even more Lu Bu.

Yep. Sekitoba is the japanese name of Red Hare. Kinda like how Lu Bu is Ryoufu or Guan Yu is Kan'U

Wait what? That wasn't the strat back in my high school. Buy one cheap pair of cleats for Phys-Ed class that you then use for both soccer and rugby. If I had to buy two pairs every year I'd be broke.

Caught up on Summertime Render. After a bit of a slow first episode the show then guns it full throttle for the next three. I'm still 90% sure that Shin is an amnesiac villain given his backstory and unique powers. This one's going for 24, and if this is what four episodes bring I have no clue what 20 more are going to do.

Executioner And Her Way Of Life 6: Damn, so Akari has a split-personality that remembers previous loops and is much more ruthless in using her powers. A lot of people guessed that there'd been previous loops and even Akari was "save-scumming" to get things right but I never liked that theory as it'd take away the earnestness of her reactions. This way though it seems her self that remembers everything is more a split-personality while the "normal" Akari still reacts to things for the first time. It explains both Akari's trust in Menou (as feelings from the previous timelines carried over) as well as her ditziness (as from her point of view everything "just works out" and she has her other self to step in whenever things get bad).

And from the flash-forward it looks like I was too soon to call off Flare being an antagonist, as it seems she killed Menou in the original timeline (presumably for being unwilling to go through with her duties). And with a suspiciously crystalline-looking sword too... could Flare be the true holder of White? But that'd make her an otherworlder too...

The recent Shield Hero episode reminded how disgusted I am that many cliché "heroes" are more willing to mercy-kill their friends than hate-kill their enemies, especially when their enemies are among the arbitrary spook known as "humans".
