Is Melty a Main Anime Fighter?

Still got to be a main game at CEOtaku for like, every single year. It has had and continues to have some of the best netcode available thanks to CCCaster. Type Lumina is absolutely a "main" anime game rn. It's on the primary Evo roster, going to likely be on the Combo Breaker main stage, has main event slot at basically every major that's gonna happen this year.

Did it ever even get an English release, outside of fan translations?

I think you really underestimate how beloved Melty has been for all this time. Almost every single anime player has some character in Melty they can play, it's kinda nuts. Probably the most ubiquitous anime fighter of them all thanks to its longevity legacy + netcode. I would have never called AACC non-existent outside of jokes, you find Melty setups at literally​ every major.

Lumina is one of the Evo titles, it's been a beacon of good rollback, and it was one of the first doujin ones to get big

Well, Lumina's netcode is actually not that good for rollback standards, but compared to all delay alternatives it is far superior.

I wouldn't dispute that Lumina is huge right now, because like you said it's on Evo's main line up. Didn't know about CEOtaku though. I can only speak for myself, but it always seemed like I'd be sure to find Under Night running at any con I went to, but to see Melty I'd have to stumble on a guy running it in a suitcase setup in the middle of the hallway at 1am.

Well I wouldn't judge its presence in the FGC by con showings. I actually quit playing Melty as a serious game in around 2014 but I've seen it run with tons of people playing it at every​ major I've been to, and I've been to a lot.

that is completely detached from the extreme autism I have regarding the few FG I do play, but it's not a good look to jerk myself off in public (even if that public is... an anime/gacha porn forum)

Think of talking to girls like playing neutral. You have to space things out until you land 5b (get her name) and don't drop the combo (tell her your name) and optimize for corner carry instead of damage (get her number)

Then you always go for safejump (ask if she'd be cool with lunch sometime) and if it's a DP you baited it and if not you get a full combo in the corner (a date)

But I agree doing this at 2am on the bus is not The Tech.

Now me, I'm greedy. I aim for the fatal counter (her to approach me) and then I go for resets (stutter awkwardly) that turn into blue combos (she finds it cute that I'm socially incapable) and I get fully corner carry but drop it and somehow we swap sides and now I'm in the corner (she gets my number)

Was dicking around with Strive a bit because of the new story update, and I think my favourite type of fighting games are the ones where each character has a wildly different systems. Shotos are fine, but what really get my blood pumping is someone who does something no one else can do. I'd rather put in the days leaning how bullshit Menat is than just play Akuma. Which is probably the reason I suck ass at fighting games.

Even Street Fighter has it's moments. Decapre in Ultra was a rushdown charge character and I'd never seen one of those before. I might not like Blazblue that much overall, but they do a spectacular job in making every every character feel different. Except for the literal clones, I still don't know why they need 3 in one game.

The aesthetics of the hip hop music and paint spraying everywhere when you do certain moves is cool and all, but I'm not sure its enough to bring me back after not liking SF5.

How is everyone feeling about that new SF trailer?

As someone who never really played SF for a significant amount of time (but I do know its general history and how shit SFV was), this trailer does show me that the people currently in charge seem to give a shit about the franchise (funny how changing producers does that). What I mean is that they are addressing the major problems that SFV had on launch. The game has actual single player content now, it has an actual theme with the hip-hop and graffiti (putting the "Street" back into Street Fighter, as it were), the characters look like actual people instead of whatever abominations were in SFV, they finally aged up the legacy characters a bit instead of keeping them in perpetual limbo like they did in everything post SFIII, they gave characters new mechanics (for instance Ryu gets an install for the fireball that isn't tied to his V-Trigger) and they added a risk-reward system and new defensive options with the Drive System.

So yeah I do feel like they are on the right track at least.

Of course, they might still royally fuck this up in the end, but it is what it is I guess.

Yeah they added a new optional simplified control scheme for new players. They call it 'Modern' controls and the standard control scheme the 'Classic' controls.

The visual design is striking me as very odd. On the one hand, all of the hip hop graffiti art looks fucking great, especially taking the inkbrush of the focus attacks and making it all super colorful. But then it pairs with that god awful block lettering that is supposed to be stenciled but just looks kind of shit in isolation. It looks fine enough contrasting the graffiti but I hate it on its own, and the hexagon looks like an nft logo. Furthermore, I think it's too big of a deviation from the original logo anyways. Wish they'd just do a rendition of the fiery letters with the graffiti stuff to use instead, or at least together with it. The modern control style is going to gimp like 25% of a character's kit so I don't expect anybody playing it competitively to use it. I don't care either way because I don't play Street Fighter.
