also buying domains isn't a static thing, you could just buy it for the alloted time and then be done which would make costs even lower

arkhangel.com was empty domain. It's vlov.com that we would need to pay major cash for. You probably know the deal about every possible 4-letter domain being held hostage by money leeches.

You can look for yourself: type in a random string of 4 letters and .com and a lot of the time what you'll come up with is a site for sale. The prices are all in the tens of thousands minimum. It's a really fascinating topic to look into, especially when you get into the problem of top-level domain registration. There are untold millions of dollars invested in domain names, and it's a great case of how absurdly speculative and exploitative digital capitalism can get.

Is there a graph out there of asking prices vs amount of letters? Obviously they're all bought to extort companies acronyms, but what if you use 'and' or 'of' instead of just the letter? How much would that drop of the price? Where is the biggest dropoff? Is that why so many Universities are uof'x'?

As you add letters the number of possible combinations increases exponentially, and since the asking prices are so high because of scarcity of free domain names, the dropoff is probably pretty steep. Although, domain name squatters are probably smart and took a lot of the ones that make actual words and phrases first, so the ones with 'and' and 'of' and so on.
