Is Alter-Ego a specific anthology? Or perhaps some sort of recurring character that shows up in a lot of works by different authors? Or is he neither?

Coming back to this - is the blood involved in Alter-Ego's existence that of fictional characters (as in murder mystery novels and the like), or does it refer to a real practice that involves/involved killing people (such as tameshigiri or whatever)?
