"That faith from the East? Not at all. My own faith is - a subject of some debate, I understand, but I will say that I do believe in something. In God. Perhaps not an old man with a beard, but a Creator, that we men might ascertain with our own two eyes. An idea, if not a man."
william blake?
"Though I take the comparison to a poet - even if it is an Englishman - as a compliment, you're quite off the mark."
Is your faith still widely practiced to this day?

"I would certainly say so - my actual upbringing was Catholic after all, though my personal faith remains my own. And likewise I imagine there are plenty who still hold faith in a Creator or author on high, even if not by strict adherence to scripture. Natural law was what I put my faith in, and that never changed. The exact detail of who or what wrote said law is irrelevant to me. The study of those laws is itself divine."
Did you ever end up criticizing Christianity itself?
"Natural history was indeed my field - or one among many, I would say. The study of our world is not simply the study of the life that walks it, but the very surface that life walks upon, and the laws that shape it. But yes, I gather most remember me best for my work in natural history. Though let us not beat around the bush and use the word biology while we're on the subject. I've a certain fondness for it."
"Far from it! I never saw any conflict between my views and the, ah... broader points of the faith. Quite the opposite, really; after my death, there were scholars who tried to brandish my work in defence of it, against a more radical truth. Misguided scholars, yes, but their intentions were pure."

"Hah! I can understand your reasoning all too well, and yet... No. Not quite."
OOOH you're Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, right? The french naturalist and soldier?

JEAN-BAPTISTE LAMARCK
wayward student to that sublime author
"And so I am exposed! Meteorologist, geologist, biologist and more, Lamarck at your service. A single student who hopes his weary eyes are still up to the task of taking in God's mysteries. The structure I'd imagined in life to bind our world and its inhabitants together may have proved fruitless, but in establishing a groundwork for the next generation of scholars, I do not believe my efforts were in vain. What I cultivated, I pass down - such is the way of things. A pleasure to make your acquaintance, all. Now... I feel as though I've an awful lot of reading material to catch up on."
(you know I really expected someone to get it instantly when I used the term sublime author)
Ooh, he was one of my other candidates for this contest, so I'm interested to see how this goes![]()
