The faint creaking sound seemed to have come from an office in the back with its door half open. Whatever caused the noise, it didn't repeat itself, and the floor was eerily quiet once again. Except for the sound of groaning coming from beyond the ajar door.

Lying on the floor beside that open door were the two Secure squad members sent to investigate, apparently subdued by something or someone. As for the room itself, it had seemingly been ransacked, with desk drawers and filing cabinets pulled open, their contents scattered around the office. And across the room from Valravn was one window, wide open, a shoeprint clearly visible in the snow on the windowsill. Whoever may have left it, though, was nowhere to be seen.

"Fuck're you on, buddy? Take you there? Didn't you hear what I just said about auto turrets?" Clearly, Doug would need a little more convincing, if he would agree to the request at all. "And nobody actually calls people 'defense contractors'. That's just the nice-sounding name they put on official documents. A merc's a merc."

Oh, the man did know the way. This was most fortunate. Sting and Asura's initiative had proven more helpful than dangerous -- but still, Nuriel would rather they be more cautious.
Nuriel silently nods as Sting promotes the term 'defense contractor' to Doug -- not that she believes that Blacksteel can be simply labeled as such, but for her own conscience, saying that she works in defense contracting helps ease her inner demons a bit. The ones that still remind her from time to time that she was affiliated with a... questionable group.

Returning to more pressing matters though:

"Well it turns out that we have someone who would like to go there, Doug."

    The sankta turns to Muelsyse.

"Would you be alright with Dough bringing us to that 'dangerous' place? I presume that you could do something if we were to stumble upon Rhine Labs automated defenses?"

That wasn't asking too much right? But then, this was supposedly an unusual manner of ingress into the Rhine Labs complex, so it could be that there would be no convenient retina scanner or ID Card slot for Muelsyse to shut down any dangerous automated defense system. Perhaps that the Director could enlighten the squad on such details.

At any rate, she should also share her plan with Doug so he understands what Nuriel would like him to do. Nuriel is trying to think of a way to give him some deal to make the idea more attractive, since it is entirely possible that he wants nothing to do with the squad. Ah, well we'll cross that bridge when we reach it.

"If the guest we are escorting agrees to this plan, I would like to ask you if it'd be possible for you to lead us to Rhine Lab, Doug -- we will act as your escorts and keep you safe if you do, you have my word. Miss Muelsyse is uh, someone from Rhine Labs. Not your average employee either."

Scheisse!” Valravn runs over to briefly check that the two on the floor aren’t lying in a pool of their own blood before getting to the windowsill, footprint plainly visible in the snow. She leans out to look for signs of the footprint’s owner: first checking the street below, then the building immediately across from the window, and finally craning her neck up and behind towards the office’s roof.

With a practiced talon she brings her communications device up to her mouth. “This is Valravn! Doc to second floor, we got two Secure Squad ops knocked! Assailant likely escaped out the window, heading to roof to catch their trail!

Judging the distance to the roof was adequate the liberi channels her arts through her staff, disappearing into a swarm of dark birds that fly out the window and up to the roof of the Tourism Center before re-materializing into her human form and deploying the defense drone. Wherever the assailant was, the high ground would be the next best place to catch the next step of their trail. The defense drone’s camera could help view at odd angles and perhaps protect her a bit.

    Spoiler:

    Carrion Swarm: 3 SP

A spell that seems to have origins in Leithanian witchcraft. In a puff of smoke, Operator Valravn transforms into a swarm of dark-feathered birds that appear to be made of shadow. The swarm can fly through enemies, leaving a cloud of ashy feathers in their wake that causes Blindness. Provides a chance for the caster to reposition and attack.

    Operator Santonia
    March 9 – 3:00 PM
    Rocky Mountain Tourism Center
    Rocky Mountain, Columbia

    "Woulds makes Moss verys sads."
Said the pilosa, with a very threatening pat on her back. Unintentionally threatening, she hoped.

"Last thing I'd want boss, no worries. I'm not planning on torturing anyone... ever, I don't think." She said, quickly following Grave Moss. They'd spent too much time here already tiptoeing around the obvious answer and Dust had already been more patient than Santonia herself would've been in her situation.

She kept going, heading to the front desk with the intention of telling Dust they were going with her after all, hopefully loud enough for the rest of the team to hear. All this waiting around was getting on her nerves and if she could force some action, all the better. Though thinking on what just happened, she wondered if anyone could force Grave Moss... at all, to do anything.

"Oh. Hey there, doc." Dust was still frozen in position, balancing on one foot after her lunge. On second glance, not exactly frozen; she was wobbling slightly, perhaps because of the heavy backpack she was still wearing. "Section 22? That's where I'm goin', so I fuckin' hope I know where it is."
    "Lucky us 'cause—"

This is Valravn! Doc to second floor, we got two Secure Squad ops knocked! Assailant likely escaped out the window, heading to roof to catch their trail!
She yelled out for those without radios: "Two ops out cold on the second floor! Val's on the roof after the mugger!"

Her playful demeanor gone in a second, Santonia dashes out of the building and looks up for any kind of leverage. Her tail swings back with enough force to crack like a whip and hooks onto the front sign of the Tourist Center, slinging her up to the roof already ready to have a go at whoever sneaked past them.

Naturally,” she replied to Grave Moss' aside in the hallway. It went without saying that she abhored the practice, but it was refreshing to hear the same from a mercenary, even if a part of Blacksteel's prestige was supposed to have come from being the most 'civilized' of the lot.

There wasn't much time to follow up on that or her conversation with Dust, however, as Santonia's radio crackled to life and Valravn's voice poured out from it. Oh. The medic broke off from the conversation and hurried towards the stairs, drawing on a pair of gloves and surgical mask as she walked. The Liberi girl hadn't specified where the injured were, but it didn't take too long to sweep through the office until she could hear the groans coming from the door on the far wall. She took care not to hit any possible wounded with the door as she stepped through and knelt down by the nearest of the two.

If you are able to describe your pains to me, please do so,” she ordered, setting down her bags and beginning the examination.

Follows the tailed operator with heavier footsteps. Calling after them as they jump to the roof.

"Bring Flappys backs, Assaults squads, nots Chase~!" There was no way the roof would support her weight, mission aside.

"Shorts Bow~! Grumpys Doc~! Mossy Assaults movings outs~" Raising her voice high enough to be heard through the building as she doesn't bother being so kind to the doorways this time. Avoiding anything structural, but there was a clear sign of her passage left. "Kitty Captain, yous havings locks downs heres yes~?" Waiting long enough for the other squad leader to reply before moving out.

A loud sigh escapes the metal shell she has ensconced herself in, the effort to complain about mission complications not something she was willing to expend.

The alarm was raised, and the team sprung into action. Valravn and Santonia flew for the roof, the squad's leader plowed through the doorway with Dust and the hooded Caster right behind, and Jessica followed Grapevine up the stairs to check on her wounded squad members. The operators on the ground didn't have much of a view, and the area seemed well-travelled enough that picking out any specific trail in the snow would be impossible. The two who'd made their way further up, though, could see over a few empty buildings and abandoned vehicles to spy a single figure running down the middle of the street. They seemed to be around 150 to 200 meters away, running... not particularly quickly, but probably fast enough that Grave Moss or Santonia would be unable to catch them without some form of assistance. From this distance, the only identifying feature Valravn and Santonia could make out was a fairly long tail.

Jessica was hot on Grapevine's trail as the Sankta hurried for the stairs and the second floor, calling to the makeshift infirmary as the pair ran past it.

"Wounded upstairs! Whoever is least busy, second floor!"

But the other medics would take time to respond, now matter how quickly they hurried, so Grapevine was first on the scene. Both of the collapsed Blacksteel troops had the same injury mirrored. A single fairly deep puncture wound, one in the left shoulder and one in the right. The muscle around the injuries was incredibly stiff, growing less pronounced further away from the wounds. It did seem to be reducing the blood loss, at least.

"Didn't see... as soon as we walked in..."

One of the downed men managed to choke out a sentence. His breathing seemed somewhat laboured, though not overly so.

"You guys are really persistent, eh? Must be some real important shit down there. That I want to know absolutely nothing about. Seems like the kinda thing they tell you, and then they gotta get rid of you after, yeah?" Doug leaned a bit to the side and squinted up at Muelsyse on the upper level. For her part, the elf waved cheerily back at him.

"I'm a director! N-not the director, b-but they'll definitely let me in! And they p-probably won't shoot at me with turrets!"

Doug sighed. What else was the poor guy to do?

"Right. Probably not turrets. And you're definitely a director. Which means a high-ranking Rhine Lab executive has showed up in Rocky Mountain with elite mercenaries, looking to break into her own lab. Supposedly."

Did the man sound any more convinced than he had a minute previously? No. He did not. But he did sound a little more intrigued.

"Let's say, hypothetically, I took you guys through the tunnels towards Rhine Lab. You'd be ahead of me, of course. If anyone has to get shot at, it's gotta be the elite mercenaries, right? Then once we get close, I'll just leave. No need to 'take care' of me for learning too much if I don't learn shit, right?"

    MEDICAL ROLL
    1d20+5
    Result: 25

Puncture wounds, deep. Non-fatal application of paralyzing agent. Outward effects reminiscent of Manticore poison. Blood loss manageable. Seal the wounds and get the patients out of the cold.

"Got it," she said simply, bracing the shoulder of the man who’d spoken and tapping her staff against the ground. A pale bead of light gathered at the head of her staff, the mechanisms turning more quietly than before. She twitched her wrist and sent it darting into the damaged tissue. A mild application of her Arts, but then again, she wasn’t one of those battlefield Casters whose priority was often to drown out injury beneath a flood of pseudomagical power. "I’m treating the poison first."

She said it as much for their benefit and Jessica’s, as well as to explain why the wound remained unhealed while she moved over to the other man and repeated her spell.

    SPELL CAST (2x)
    Purification Round 5.45
2 SP | Range: Short | Removes one status effect
A holy bullet to kill sickness. Until all the world's illness can be burned away.
administrative note: do not use these in the clinic, it scares our visiting patients

Now to seal the wounds. Again, she took a step longer than a combat medic might, reaching out to pull the damaged cloth away from the wound before summoning her Arts. The last thing she needed was a stray thread of ballistic fiber getting caught in the skin as it was sealed. Another spell, one of the two she’d used in the garage moments ago.

    SPELL CAST (2x)
    Healing Round 5.45
    3 SP | Range: Medium | Restores 15HP
A holy bullet to uphold the sanctity of life. Just point at the operating table and shoot.
administrative note (x4): please find some way to mitigate the concussive effect

Preliminary treatment handled, Grapevine removed one of her gloves and fished a bottle of physician-grade antibiotics from her bag, pouring a pair of capsules and pressing one to each of the pair’s working hands in a tissue. It'd give them something to concentrate on.

"For later. Let my Arts run their course, then take these at your medical officer’s instruction. Your priority is to get the affected area out of the cold and covered. Are you able to do so? I will remain with you until then." She replaced her glove and moved to cover each wound with her hands before turning to Jessica. "Your assessment, Captain? The depth of their wounds notwithstanding, their affliction resembles Manticore poisoning, making the placement of each a fortunate thing. It is not for me to suppose whether that was intentional or not, however."

Sting could only shrug to Doug's commentary regarding their jobs. After all, it's not like he disagreed with the young man's take on them, Sting didn't much see a difference between mercenaries and defense contractors either. It was only thanks to countless hours of orientation and staff training that had caused the term "defense contractor" to be drilled into him. Nonetheless, Public relations really weren't part of his job description, thankfully it seemed that his boss had a better handle on it than him.

"Important? Your guess is as good as mine, buddy. But, that's the job and I would rather not lose out on the paycheck that comes with it. Cost of living in Columbia is crazy, y'know?"

Sting pointed to himself with his thumb in answer to Doug's question regarding who'd be the one unfortunate enough to take the lead in their little expedition to Rhine labs.

"Don't worry, buddy, I'm the one who who'll be taking point, you just need to point me in the right direction is all! Though getting shot at? Ehh, I prefer dealing with problems like that before it reaches that point. Now as for taking care of loose ends..."

Sting crossed his arms and rubbed his chin as he appeared to contemplate Doug's words, before his gaze shifted to their team leader, Nuriel.

"Don't think that's part of the job description, is it, boss?"

"That isn't, thankfully," Nuriel nods in response to Sting's question before continuing: "though, I understand you mistrust towards us Doug, but I can guarantee you that there is no financial reason to stab you in the back. Besides... Sting can lead the way as he said. You just need to give us direction on where to go. I'll be next to you as well -- I will do all I can to keep you safe, just stay by my side. If things go wrong, we even have a doctor here."

The Sankta motions towards Operator Vitro, who was indeed, uh, probably, a certified medical expert. But then Medical Experts like... who was that strange person from Rhodes Island... Warfarin? Yes, these were often the most scary kind of people...

A small chill runs down Nuriel's back as she remembers her 'rehabilitation' process at Rhodes Island, though now is not the time to think about such things.

"Does this arrangement suit you, Doug? No risk for you, and I do my best to keep you safe."

She might have been able to catch up if she exerted her arts…but she would have overexerted herself and been too exhausted to apprehend the assailant. The healing arts worked quickly, and it was less than a minute before the two were upright and mobile again, grumbling apologies to the doctor and complaints toward their unseen assailant.

"What a joke. No casualties in the first skirmish, only to go down like a punk when we should've been safe."

Jessica gave the annoyed man a pat on the good shoulder before nudging the pair towards the door, with the secure squad's approaching medic not far away.

"Manticore, huh?" Jessica bit her lip, pondering the information Grapevine had figured out from the mens' injuries and symptoms. "The only manticore I know is Operator Manticore. She, uh, turns invisible, right? Are those normal Arts for manticores...?"

"Nothin'? Can't see shit down here!" Dust had drawn her bow in the mad dash outside, but the diminutive vulpo didn't have a line of sight to fire on the fleeing attacker. The secure team caster stood on their tiptoes, trying to see something they might be able to target, but didn't find anything either. Shaking their head, they returned inside to their chair while Dust peered at the nearby vehicles.

"Requisition a car? Mountaineering vehicles ain't hard to jack, but-" The sniper cut off mid-sentence, interrupted by a rather conspicuous round of coughing before she could implicate herself further. "Uh, ahem. "No risk for me, huh? My own cadre of heavily armed black ops mercs to keep me safe?" The feline rubbed his ski-mask-wearing chin as he contemplated the offer. "You got a point. This is Columbia, after all. No point leaving me dead in a closet somewhere if you don't get paid for it, right?"

As Doug pondered his situation, Muelsyse descended the stairs to rejoin the squad, confident any possibility of violence had been averted. Still shivering, though.

"Hm. So, lemme get this straight." After a minute or so, Doug suddenly spoke up and began pointing at each member of the infiltration team, starting with Sting. "You're the sneaky guy, right? Team's always gotta have a sneaky guy, and you were the first one here. So it's gotta be you. Sankta is clearly the boss. Rhine lady is the VIP. Lupo is the caster, I guess. That leaves..."

"You are unharmed?" Grapevine asked, pacing up through the roof access and looking Santonia and Valravn over before leaning over the side of the roof to speak to the Vulpo out front. "I believe the company allows on-site procurement in the event of an emergency, Operator Dust. I'll defer to your superior field experience on the matter."

Well that was a relief. It seemed the team's new acquaintance realized exactly the type of outfit that he was dealing with. Good, good. Peaceful resolutions to these sorts of things were always preferable, since the other option...well, it's not that Sting wouldn't do it if he had to, but then came the process of cleaning his shirt...bloodstains are such a pain to remove. Buying a replacement wasn't cheap either, it was a Siracusan original, after all!

"Sneaky guy? Huh, that's a new one, buddy, though can't say its wrong. But y'know, I can do a lot more than just some sneakin'. Wait until we need to take someone out nice and quietly..."

With that Sting flashed a grin at the young man, coupled with a soft chuckle.

Demolitions guy? Actually, the group could actually use one of those right around now. But Vitro fitting that role? That probably wasn't the case...although considering the different kinds of concoctions the little guy has no doubt brought along, there's always a chance that the right mix could...

But nah, he wasn't the demolitions guy, no, he was...

"Oh, no, he's just our resident dru-" Sting's mouth clamped shut as he caught himself from finishing his wayward answer. He wasn't looking for another infraction from HR (his pay had been cut enough before this job had even started, after all) and so after a slight pause, he opted to provide a more...clean answer. "Doctor, yes. He's our first aid guy, the one who patches us up once the fighting is all done. And uh..." Sting then slightly leaned closer to Doug, one hand covering his mouth in order to whisper what seemed to be an important message, "You didn't hear it from me, but I'm pretty sure he can cook more than just your usual over the counter stuff, if you know what I mean."

Vitro kept his silence throughout the surprise civilian encounter. Squad Leader Nuriel and Specialist Sting took over communications just fine, so he chose not to butt in if he could help it. Until—-

Vitro puffed up at the remarks -- though more so at the Entoma’s implication than Doug’s ignorance.

“How rude! Technically I am a Supporter Operator, but I do have credentials as a licensed practitioner.” The Liberi shook his fist towards Sting, the gesture pointed were it not for the height difference and somewhat muffled voice. “Didn't spend years pouring over textbooks and writing papers to be regarded as some back-alley dealer…!”

Maybe it was a tad self-important to defend his ‘honor’ as a doctor, but the toxicologist was not someone to procure narcotics for monetary gain like some common thug. His concoctions, though unorthodox, were meant to aid the sick and afflicted first and foremost. And moreover, he was not those thrice-damned wolves in the Famiglie

Fuming a little more, Operator Vitro then cleared his throat to collect himself.

“...Anyhow, rest assured that I have the means to mend your wounds, be it my hands or my Arts. The latter, however, provided I have extensive knowledge of your height, weight and other peculiarities; but I trust you’ll maintain a safe distance should something occur.”

    Still, ‘demolition…’

“That said, you are not entirely wrong. If the need arises, my Arts do allow some more destructive applications.” Scratching where his chin would be, Vitro continued. “Nothing on the level of fiery explosions, per say, but enough to severely weaken.”

The Act of dozing off in the afternoon is a luxury indeed.
    Coffee would be nice, though.
