Yofukashi no Uta/Call of the Night:
I was really weirded out by the direction and photography.
The neon colors could be cool if used ocasionally, but doing whole backgrounds on bright purple and using it for extended shots just didn't work. The backgrounds aren't heavily stylized either, so the clash with the coloring of the characters looks less like a stylistic choice and more like they couldn't integrade it well.
It follow the manga closely, which is great, but then there are these sudden cuts between shots that are almost disorienting. They seem to happen between what would be different panels in the manga, but you can't just do that 1:1 in an adaptation. The lack of transition was confusing more than once.
Going back to composition again, the difference between the detailed lighting and shading on the close up of the characters and the flat coloring of the distant shots is too stark. The sudden transitions between the two don't help either.
I also don't love how they're treating the comedy? The mosquito joke for example had a pretty flat delivery, which was pretty good, but then the soundtrack is this super goofy comedy tune which is going for a totally different feel.
The voice actors are doing a pretty good job though, and I really liked the insert song at the end. I didn't expect to hear Yofukashi no Uta since Creepy Nuts composed a new song for the OP, so that was a nice surprise.

Judging from just the first episode, nope. It doesn't really add anything.
It's a very boring 1:1 adaptation with weird directing.
This might just be my bias of reading the manga first, but YnU has such a weird style with not only how it flows, but also how it presents itself, that it's weird to imagine it as an anime.
Just seeing the backgrounds with all of the neon lighting already clashes with how desolate the environments are usually portrayed.
So yeah, I'm not surprised that it turned out iffy.
