El melloi would have been a lot interesting, if he managed to write waver as someone inspired from Sherlock holmes as a personality. Not same to same but like it never fails no matter how matter how many times people do it.

I feel like Sanda likes Waver a lot but Waver's story is not what he truly wanted to write, so he made Waver into something else entirely.
Serving as a detective in magical incidents wasn't Waver's thing before, it was Touko's thing.
Having a standout understanding of magecraft that allows one to see details most mages miss wasn't Waver's thing before, it was Touko's thing.
Teaching teenagers cool power-ups to let them handle themselves wasn't Waver's thing before, it was Touko's thing. (ok, this one was part of Elmo 2's concept)
Being prone to insufferably long-winded infodumps tying Nasu-original elements to real-life mysticism in a way no one else really does wasn't Waver's thing before, it was Touko's thing.
I think it's no coincidence Sanda dropped Touko as a guest character at the first possible opportunity.
If only protagonist was touko. I think the concept of his character arc is amazing. Problem was his personality. If someone isn't interesting enough it feels like a chore to listen to them. He should have made it as touko's male version..like he made watered down female version of kirei as reines.

Early strange fake El Melloi 2 is more true to the character concept from Character Mats.
Though abandoned, forgotten, and scorned as out-of-date dolls, they continue to carry out their mission, unchanged from the time they were designed.
Machines do not lose their worth when a newer model appears.
Their worth (life) ends when humans can no longer bear that purity.
When do you think El Melloi first became more like the version we see in later on in later parts of Case Files & Adventures? Because it does seem he has gotten sanded down.
