    Versed (IC Thread)

The sun peeks through the clouds, once again illuminating the blue sky above. At the same time, a small breeze blows in from the ocean and brings with it the slight scent of fish, seafoam, and moss. In combination with the smell of the surrounding woods, it’s enough to give even the most acclimated of city-dwellers pause.

A gentle heat kisses the skin.

The sound of distant waves washes away all worries.

And the sounds of nature orchestrate the day that is yet to unfold.

Some people would shy away from such scenery- favoring the familiar comfort of their convenient homes. However, for the more adventurous sort, this kind of environment is merely a part of a standard day.

“Alright. How exactly should I start this thing off?”

Making her way along a mountain trail, a young woman poses a question to a nonexistent audience. As she ponders this thought, she brings herself to a stop just as her destination comes into view. A city, inching into view just over the treetops.

“Well… Let’s see,” The young woman, Rebecca Shore, pulls her traveling gear off of her back and sets it firmly on the ground. She zeroes in on one of the pockets and- after a bit of rummaging- manages to pull out her phone, “I guess I can just try a couple of things. Not like anyone is going to see it if I edit it out later.”

Rebecca checks her battery and messes with a few settings before hitting the record button. Naturally, having forgotten to first establish a good shot, she quickly places the city view behind her and raises her phone.

“Hey guys! It’s your favorite Chronicler again! Rebecca Shore!”

The blonde effortlessly performs her standard greeting with 120 percent regular enthusiasm. Still, despite her practice, she can’t help but laugh awkwardly and whence at the thought of how silly she must look.

“The things I do for clicks…”

Repositioning herself, Rebecca moves behind the camera and points it directly at the city in the distance. As she pans the shot, genuine glee begins to shine through her eyes.

“The year is 0098 After Loss. Estimated world population: 3.6 billion. About a century ago, everyone in the world lost all of their memories. To be more precise, just about everything aside from names and everyday skills were mysteriously erased from minds all across the globe. Fortunately, man was able to persevere and rebuild; however, the removal of history not committed to written word is something we still feel today. In time, we would come to call this event The Great Loss.”

A smile spreads across the girl’s face. The idea of discovering and experiencing a piece of human history brings her joy. But, even more than that, the prospect of unraveling a grand scale mystery steadily taking its hold over her.

“To this day, experts have still not been able to determine what exactly caused such a thing to occur. But, there are a few guesses,” Having gotten enough footage of the city, Rebecca turns the camera back to her, “The most notable being something that never appeared in any known history prior. The existence of magic and the supernatural. And that’s what has brought me here to Union City. The place people around the globe are starting to call the center of the new world.”

Satisfied with her preliminary take, Rebecca stops the recording and takes a moment to collect herself. She lowers the phone and finds herself once again gazing over the city. She doesn’t say anything more. She merely takes in the sight and allows a myriad of thoughts and questions to flood into her mind. Only after a minute passes does she nod to herself in affirmation and prepare to set out.

The blonde excitedly picks up her gear and tosses it over her shoulder- sprinting down the mountain trail. At same time, she quickly dials a number on her phone and brings it to her ear.

    “Hello? …Yeah, it’s me~! I’m on my way now!”

The fan hums in your ear. Words from the radio fill the dead air.

“In other news, officials are investigating the source of a mysterious sound that occurred late last night in the forest west of the city limits. At around 3:30 in the morning, multiple locals reported hearing what sounded like rolling thunder coming from the area. While it is widely believed that this may merely be kids up to some midnight mischief, initial investigations have revealed no evidence that magic was involved. But perhaps what is even more baffling is that officials have yet to find anything that could be causing these sounds so early in the morning. Making this the third unexplained woodland noise in the past two weeks.”

It’s another quiet day. Though that doesn’t come as much of a surprise. While it’s true that most people are probably out to lunch, the fact is that your humble little shop has never really pulled much traffic. After all, the only people who are really interested in collecting and perusing old books and knick knacks are the elderly. Rich elderly… But elderly nonetheless.

Still, that just makes your current set of customers all the more curiouser.

“And you’re sure this is what she’s looking for?” A girl with long, blue hair rather roughly handles an old history textbook, “Just looks like a stupid ol’ book to me. And the hell is up with this price!?”

“Yep,” Her friend responds calmly. Taking the historic text away from her companion, she gingerly pulls another book from the shelf to inspect it, “I’m not entirely sure what she wants with a bunch of old history books, but she is paying for it all. So it’s not like it’s much of an issue for us.”

“Tsch… Speak for yourself… We’re the ones that have to haul the damn things back to school. Awfully shitty club activity if you ask me.”

Students. Based off their appearances, you’d say they’re too young to be working on a dissertation… yet too old to be mere high school students. College freshmen, maybe? Even if that is the case, it’s strange to see customers their age here. School project or not.

While keeping an eye out for the well-being of your merchandise, you keep to yourself for the time being. You don’t want to approach them like some kind of eager salesman. Plus, you get the impression that they know what they’re looking for and where to find it. The girl in the cap could handle your items with a bit more care… But, so far, it looks like she has only touched things they have every intention of buying. You can let it slide. For now…

After a few minutes exploring your wares, the pair end up with quite a haul. Six… Nine… Twelve books by your count. And not small ones either.

The two gather up the books and have a brief conversation before the redhead hands the cap girl a pay card. Then, surprisingly, the blue-haired girl picks up all the books and begins walking them to the register.

    “Dusty ol’ books comin’ through!”

Meanwhile, her friend stays behind. Seemingly thinking about something rather seriously before wandering around the store some more. You get the feeling she isn’t looking for books this time.

During your time here in Union City, you’ve seen your fair share of oddities. Such a thing is inevitable in a day and age where magic and supernatural phenomena are quickly becoming the norm. Still, it would seem there are still oddities left in this city for you to discover.

“I hear tale that you’re pretty good.”

A rather peculiar guest has come to your office on this day. A girl, dressed fashionably in white, with the looks of a young teen and the subtle mannerisms of a mature woman. She stands at the center of your vision- brimming with confidence- wearing an almost triumphant smile. In a way, you feel as though you could describe this girl’s image as brilliant. However, all of that does little to draw your attention away from the halo hovering over her head.

It’s unlike anything you’ve seen before. Sure you understand what it is. You’ve just never heard of a person walking around with an actual halo. Let alone met one. And there’s more… Through a quick bit of observation, you notice that this halo neither casts a shadow nor does it seem to have a reflection. It only exists within your vision.

“Pardon me,” As if to pull you away from your own thoughts, the girl speaks up, “My name is Towa. Just Towa. And allow me to cut to the chase. I would like to hire you for a series of jobs. Though going into the details could take a bit of time. If you’re willing to hear me out, that is.”

This Towa girl is rather forward. Or perhaps assertive would be a more fitting word? The more you rest your eyes on her, the more conscious you become of her presence. No… Her existence in this room. If you didn’t know any better, you would almost say that her mere proximity to you is threatening to overshadow you.

Something about this mysterious visitor is unnerving you on a deep level. As to what and why, it’s hard to tell. At the very least, you don’t get the feeling she has come here to cause any trouble.

Setting aside your thoughts for the time being, you smile and motion the girl over to a seat, inviting her into your office proper.

Towa answers your gesture with a warm smile and quietly walks over to a chair. You follow shortly after.

“To be more specific with my request, I’d ask you to investigate three different areas of interest to me. The first being the forest out to the west of the city. The second is the grand library located in this city’s historical district. Akasha, I believe it was called,” Towa leans back in her chair and crosses her legs. Her eyes seemingly studying yours, “The last is the headquarters of the international conglomerate specializing in cutting edge arcane research and history: Metis.”

The actual extent of her request throws you for a bit of a loop. It was all delivered so calmly that the actual absurdity of it almost gives you whiplash. The forest is one thing, but Akasha and Metis are two different things entirely.

“Oh. And don’t worry about the money. I pay well.”

Akasha not only serves as a general purpose library, but it also serves as a protected archival center for both known history and an international database hub. Metis… Metis is an organization that has basically become an international superpower. As it’s at the forefront of arcane research, development, and regulation, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say it has its hands in governments across the world.

    “Mr. Anderson?”

Once again, Towa pulls you away from your own thoughts. Your professional instinct advises you not to express your concerns outright… However, the gentle, yet impish smile spreading across your guest’s face informs you such efforts are in vain.

    “Do you have questions?”

None of this sounds like it’s going to be mere detective work.

You can feel your entire body shift on its side. A certain kind of grogginess and ache make themselves apparent, but this is immediately alleviated by your body’s desire to stretch on the spot. From there you are quickly greeted by a familiar comfort. The soft feel of silk and cotton wrapped around you and the subtle smell of disinfectant mixing in with burning incense.

“Ah. I see you’re awake. Good.”

Rolling over in the direction of the voice, you open your eyes and find yourself in the usual examination room. Not quite as well-equipped as the rooms you’ve been placed in until recently, but it does have a level of warmth unlike most hospital rooms.

Sitting in the chair next to your bed is your new doctor. A lady that introduced herself as Dr. Wu Mei.

“How are you feeling? Anything unusual? Anything feel off?”

Mei wastes no time getting to business. She doesn’t even raise her head to greet you. She seems far more interested in reviewing the stack of notes pinned to her clipboard. Although, you do notice her eyes look over the rim of her glasses momentarily.

“Your examination results came back just a few minutes ago. I’m going over them now, but it looks like everything came back all clear. There doesn’t appear to be anything inherently wrong with your body. No viruses. No irregular growths. Nothing,” The doctor pauses as she turns to a new page in the reports, “Though… Your mental examination seems a bit more… Colorful, shall we say.”

Wu Mei was just assigned to you two days ago. As such, you haven’t had much time to interact with her really. Outside of a brief introduction and interview, she has pretty much buried herself in analyzing your particular condition. Supposedly, while she is certified as a doctor, her main occupation is that of an arcane research specialist working directly under Metis. She seems highly-qualified.

“Ms. Chambers, are you certain you really have a condition? Or have you simply convinced yourself as such?”

Mei sighs as she lowers the clipboard and finally looks you straight in the eye. There’s frustration in her tone and a look of disappointment akin to a parent catching their child in a lie.

It feels like a lot of bothersome things are going on today.

First you’re told by your boss that you’ll no longer be coming into the office to work. Then you suddenly get a call from the director, telling you that you’re to arrive at this location by 0900 hours. He even made it very clear that if you were as much as a second late, you could kiss your job goodbye.

Upon your arrival, the receptionist already knew who you were. Before you could even explain why you were here, you were already being guided through a series of gates, metal detectors, and doorways by at least five different armed guards.

Ultimately, they brought you to what was definitely an interrogation room. At first you’d questioned whether you’d done something to piss off the top brass, but no one came to cuff you to the table. Hell, no one even came to keep you company. Instead, you were left with a single pen and a stack of paperwork to complete. Name, age, address, proof of insurance, proof of residency, marital status, driver’s license, bank info… Hell, at one point they even asked you to describe your typical schedule. That whole process took a whopping two hours of your life…

    And now…

“You serious, boss? This some sort of joke?”

At the end of it all, you were walked into a rather interesting office. In it, a short girl with long red hair and a less than enthused looking older man greeted you.

“Now, now, Louis. Let's not get our panties in a bunch over nothing. You should know by now that looks can be deceiving.”

“But she’s clearly still a kid. Looks may be deceiving, but I’m not going to sign off on a kid joining the force.”

“Well… I guess you’ll be happy to know that this strapping young lady is 25. That means she’s more than capable of buying her own drinks and making her own decisions. And let's not forget, I look much younger than her and you take orders from me.”

The male officer opens his mouth to object, but he just as soon sighs in defeat. This is not a battle he’s likely to win.

With the small quarrel over, the redhead smiles and turns her attention to you.

“Anyway.. Sorry about that. I’m sure you’ve got a lot of questions about what’s going on. Why don’t you take a load off and have a seat first though? I’m sure you’ve had a busy morning.”

The boss briefly motions you over to one of the seats before stepping over to the side, “Coffee?”

As she prepares two mugs, your attention is drawn back to the older gentleman standing next to the boss’s desk. He’s been staring at you a bit. Likely still objecting to whatever it is that’s going on.

“The name’s Johnathan. Jonathan Louis Lowe. Special Training and Tactics Squadron. Thirteen years on the force,” Stepping closer to you, he extends his hand, “A pleasure.”

“Oh right. I guess introductions are in order.”

The boss steps up to the table and places a cup of coffee, cream, and sugar on the table next to you. She then takes a seat on top of her desk before taking up her own cup of coffee that has patiently been waiting for her.

“You’ll have to excuse me. I already know so much about you that it’d completely slipped my mind. My name is Elynah Maddenson. You’ve probably already put this together, but I’m this stiff’s commanding officer. And now… I’m yours too.”

With a smile, Elynah takes a sip of her black coffee.

“Starting today. You work for me. Welcome to the Supernatural Countermeasures Force."

“We have a serious problem, you two.”

Not too far from the docks is a small little upstairs apartment. This little apartment is the humble home of the Kingsward Brethren- a small band of lowlifes. This apartment serves as their office. A base of operations where they receive and execute a number of requests they get on the daily. Nothing to write home about, but enough to scrape on by. After all, in a city ruled by major powers, many can’t be bothered with a bottom rung squad advertising themselves as “your friendly neighborhood criminals.”

Members come and go. More often than not, some youngster walks in off the street looking for some quick cash and a bit of respect from rolling with a gang. But after seeing what the Kingsward is all about, they usually leave to go join one of the bigger gangs ruling the city. Still, even if times are tough, you’ve always felt it was a nice and quiet life. Usually.

Today doesn’t seem like it’s going to be one of those days. Not too long ago, Charles- the boss man- called you and Jessie to his office. When the two of you finally returned from your morning rounds, you found a man stressed out of his mind.

He’s been sitting in his armchair for the past three minutes without saying a single word, tapping his foot repeatedly. Sitting on the table in front of him are two metal cases. One about the size of a large instrument case. The other is about the size of a jumbo luggage. Too large to be anything good. Both military grade. Both definitely smell like trouble.

“We got a job. A pretty big one.”

“And?” Jess interrupts. Irritated, “What’s the big deal, huh? If we get a job, we do it. Doesn’t matter how big it is. So hurry up and get on with it. I’ve got better things to do with my day than spend it hanging out with a couple of washed-up old men.”

Charles doesn’t even bat an eye at Jess’s words. Not because he’s got a steel pair or anything. Anyone could tell at a glance that Jess has a bigger pair. He’s just that freaked out by whatever this job is.

“We’ve been instructed to deliver this package to a secret meeting point,” Charles looks at the large case sitting on the table, “We were also told not to look inside. It’s likely a smuggling job.”

Jess raises a brow in interest. She looks at the case and weighs the options in her head again, but remains largely unfazed.

“Okay… Still sounds like easy money to me. I’m not getting why you’re sitting in here shitting your pants over this.”

    Another silence.

Charles once again stares off into the distance. You can see the sweat running down his brow even from here.

    “Right…”

Breaking the silence, the gang boss reaches for the smaller case, undoes the locks, and turns it towards the two of you.

“Holy shit…” Jess leans forward and places her hands on the table, “This can’t be real…”

Sitting on the table is what you’d expect. A case full of money. It’s the amount of said money that’s the problem.

“Thirteen… No…” Unable to contain her excitement, Jess reaches into the case and starts to count the money, “There’s gotta be at least fourteen mill here…”

“It’s fifteen and a half million,” Charles answers nervously, “I counted it earlier… And that’s just the advance payment. The client says they’ll triple it when we complete the job.”

Jess’s eyes widen as she slumps and loses strength in her limbs. Who could blame her? This alone is probably more money than the three of you combined would have ever seen in your lives.

“You starting to get it now? If we do this job, each of us could walk away from this with so much money that we could wipe our asses with it for the rest of our lives. But, no matter how you look at it…”

“Why offer this much to a shitstain gang like ours?” Jessie finishes the boss’s thought for him, “We don’t even own this turf…”

Charles’s expression grows even more grim.

It doesn’t take much to get where his head is at. This is a setup. No two ways about it.

    Time: Midday

The park is particularly peaceful today. Even though it’s lunch hour, there doesn’t seem to be many people around. You see a few people out walking their dogs. There are even a handful of elderly folk who have come here to feed the birds. Other than that, the park appears to be largely empty. Everyone else must be busy with work or school.

You’d decided to get some fresh air earlier. Go out, stretch your legs, pick up a snack or two from the local convenience store. All little things to help pass the time. Really, you were just looking for an excuse to leave the house. It’s likely your reluctance to go back that led to you taking a detour through this park. You want to clear your head a bit. Get away from those nagging worries that haunt you when you stay still.

The breeze whistles in your ear. Your footsteps provide a steady rhythm and let you just space out. Before you know it, you’re wandering. Time passes without much of a worry for the outside world. Until…

    “Um. Excuse me!”

An unfamiliar voice snaps you out of your daze.

You stop in your tracks and take a moment to look around. Whoever it is doesn’t sound to be particularly close.

“Heeeey! You there! With the short hair!”

It isn’t until they call out the second time that you’re able to pinpoint their location.

Off to the side and between some trees, you see a girl waving in your direction. Huddled around her are three men that look… a little less than friendly.

“Would you mind helping me out!? I’m being accosted by these ne’er-do-wells! I’d really appreciate it if you could help me out!”

The strange girl is waving and smiling at you. You wish you could readily do the same. You probably shouldn’t get involved.

“The hell did this broad just say? Something about a cost?”

“Beats me, man. But if she’s coming at a cost, I’m sure the three of us can work something out.”

Realizing that she’s in trouble, the girl panics. Her oblivious smile vanishes and she tries to create distance between her and the two men closing in on her. Unfortunately, her back quickly hits the nearby tree and leaves her nowhere to run.

At the same time, the third goon has turned his attention to you as a result of the girl’s shouting.

“Hey…” He starts stepping towards you with eyes squinted, “That girl ain’t too shabby lookin’ either.”

    Definitely not good.

“Hey, cutie! Don’t just stand there! Come join the party!”

"Convinced myself?" El asked, tilting her head as she tapped the side of her cheek with a frown, "I don't see how I'd manage such a thing."

Her blood laughed, and El looked at the doctor with idle curiosity, kicking her legs back and forth on top of the examination table.

"Especially since it's been with me since I was so young, right? Isn't it a bit mean to ask a terminally ill girl if she's faking the disease that kept her in the hospital?" El asked, stretching out her arms as she looked at the doctor once more, frowning slightly. "Shouldn't it be like... pretty well documented at this stage? Are you even a real doctor?! Or were you..."

She looked around surreptitiously, before leaning forward:

"Sent by that man? I know He has eyes and ears everywhere, but don't worry, Doctor. I won't ever rat you out, even on pain of death!"

El lifted up her arms and tried to flex, giving the woman a brave and determined face. It looked rather out of place on El's face, to be honest - she was too young to pull off 'determined' without looking a bit silly, and her features were too soft to accentuate 'bravery' without looking a bit like a fluffy animal.

Mei sighs and shakes her head. A slightly amused smile working its way in.

"Right, right. The evil boogey man in the sky."

The doctor sets aside her notes and leans in closer to you. Raising her pen, she gently pokes your flexed bicep. If you could even call it that.

"Well, Ms. Chambers, while it's true that your body has trouble generating and storing magical energy, that doesn't mean you're sick. It just means you're inept. Rare in this day and age, but not unheard of. All of your documents and physical examinations even support this. Though you score low in regard to energy generation, several of your physical attributes are notably superhuman. So it's clear that your body is generating some form of supernatural power. Which leads me to conclude that this 'sickness' is entirely a mental fabrication."

Yet another person that doesn't believe in your plight. But perhaps it's to be expected. After all, the good doctor does seem to be a lady of science. It's unlikely that she'd believe in powers that can't be explained by logic and reasoning. It's natural that she would not believe that He has blighted you for years without rest.

"Also," The moves her pen and pokes your cheek. Her smile widening, "You are aware what terminal illness means, correct? If your condition was nearly half as bad as you say, I doubt you'd be alive speaking to me."

Mei teases you a bit before leaning back in her seat. She picks up her clipboard and quietly jots down a note or two.

"But who knows. Maybe you'll roll over and croak on me right now? Or maybe you've already died and now you're stuck in your own personal little hell?"

You're beginning to think that the good doctor might have a bit of a rotten personality.

"Anyway..." Having finished whatever she was writing, the professionalism returns to the doctor's voice, "You still haven't answered my questions. If you disagree with my opinion, I'm sure you'd like your words documented for the other doctors to see. No?"

Lunch was important. Food in general was important, to be fair. But for one Angela Harris, it wasn't quite the same type of important as it was for your average person. Normally, you were supposed to eat the right types of food. Get your vitamins, your minerals, your carbohydrates, the usual business. In Angela's case, though, raw volume was good enough. Whatever she felt like eating on any given day was perfectly fine, as long as she had a lot of it. So she sat down behind the counter at Lost Finds with an oversized cheeseburger, two orders of french fries, and an extra large soda.

More noises in the woods, huh. No signs of magic... doesn't mean no magic, though. Just that investigators didn't find any.

Well, it wasn't her problem. Most likely. Random thunder or explosions from the woods, definitely nothing for her to worry about.

...well, Nova was right there. No harm in asking.

"'Ey, Nova." Angela's mouth was full of cheeseburger, but she managed to make herself mostly clear somehow. "Your audio sensors reach far enough to hear that?"

Probably not. Even if they were, she would have been in standby mode at the time. Expecting nothing, Angela grabbed a couple of fries to follow up the burger and dipped them in ketchup. In the meantime she kept an eye on the two girls collecting books. What were they doing here, anyway? If they were history students, sure, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to be buying the old books at Lost finds, but a club activity? There definitely wasn't a club related to hundred year old history books when she had been at university.

She couldn't really call herself an archaeologist if she just dug things out of the ground and tossed them in a junk pile.

"This everything? Looks like Red is still looking for something back there."

Before the girl with the cap could respond, Angela pointed a thumb towards her one and only employee.

"Nova over there'll get you. I'm still on lunch break. Nova, get off your phone when there are customers here, I swear to god."

"Hey... What the hell?" The blue-haired growls, "Hey... Don't ignore me."

The student lifts all the books up and slams them down on the countertop. Rather, she drops them on the counter.

"Just what kind of shitty shop are you running here? Half the shit in here smells like dirt and mothballs. And the only two people tending the shop can't be bothered to get off their asses when paying customers walk into the store."

Leaning over the counter, the girl slams the payment card down in front of you.

"Look, I don't care if you're on your lunch break or not. We're paying good damn money for these rags you call merchandise. And you're the only one sitting behind the register. So how about you stop stuffing your damn face and do your damn job?"

    Hm. Not what I expected.

Angela waited in silence for just a moment before setting her food down and standing up. Then she cleaned her hands with a santized wipe, dried them with a napkin from the burger place, and grabbed the stack of books.

Only to move them behind the counter and slide the girl's card back to her.

"Get the fuck out. If your friend wants these she can come up here and get them herself."

Angela returned to her lunch, leaving Nova to deal with whatever the girl did next.

    "Haaah..."

What a pain in the ass, but at least he's finally gonna say something about it and quit stewin' in his own juices.

I bounce my right foot where it's been resting on my other knee idly, chewing on a bit of something that was once something that tasted good about three or four hours ago.

I'd've gotten up and rooted around for a replacement, but Chuckie'd complain, he's real OCD about having this shit-hole dive looking exactly the way he wants it to.

A man comfortable and secure in his position, some people in the world may look down on that. Just content with a miserable life in the dregs.

    I sighed.

"Well, let's wrap it all up with a bow, yeah? We got 15 and a half mil right there on the table, with coming up on 46 an' a half waiting in the pipeline," I blew irritably at a bang in my eyes.

"There's a couple things ta consider with that; Uno: They think this business is worth spending a solid chunk of dinero on, so it's probably important, Deux: They're looking to get it done quick and dirty, or they'd hire someone more legal, or it's just straight up illegal from the get-go, smuggling or something. And, my personal favorite, San: We, the enterprising rockin' and sockin' brothers of the Kingsward, are apparently enough on the radar that people will spend money on us doing this."

    A small pause.

"Or think we're a bunch of idiots who can get lead around like lemmings with some money on a stick, but hey," I gestured lazily.

"That's 5 and a half mil each, right there."

I stretched, "Honestly if that's how much money it takes to go through myself in a meatgrinder, I'm flattered, you could get some hatchetman from the docks to come in with a doorknocker to take some people out for, what, about 6 thou? Half that if you don't give a fuck. Casually dropping a truckful for of that on some people..."

I chuckled, "Well, even a washed-up old chickenshit like me will set up and beg like a dog."

El nodded rapidly at the doctor's words, looking extremely serious. But as the doctor continued to speak, she started to look more and more perplexed, then snickered a bit.

"Hm. Hm. I get it, I get it, yeah." she said, waving a hand. "Some things don't seem possible, so we just like to ignore them and find easier answers for them."

El was, in spite of the doctor's words, a fairly sick girl. Having 'superhuman attributes' didn't get rid of the weaknesses of her body. She was something of a medical interest, at least in her personal opinion - having seen many doctors and heard many different hypothesis as to her condition, it was interesting to meet one who accused her of faking it. Her condition was fairly rare; to the point of being almost one of the only people on the planet with it. At least, according to other staff members.

This one was a bit of a lunatic.

"Unless you're saying that the rest of the hospital staff is incompetent," El said, crossing her arms and sending the doctor a serious look, "and have been keeping me here in order to steal money from my family for the last decade. That's an interesting hypothesis doctor, do you want to bring it up with the administration?"

The girl winked to let the doctor know she was joking, then coughed, a loud and hacking thing that wracked her body. She shuddered as it finished, taking a deep breath as her blood giggled in her ears.

El was, in the end, a sickly person.

"But sure, here it is: I feel the same. The cough still doesn't stop. I feel feverish and dizzy a lot. Sometimes, it feels like I'm freezing, even when the weather's warm. I can feel my blood bubbling every now and then under my skin."

She winked at the doctor, pointing at her with finger guns as she grinned, before turning away from the doctor to look out the window. At the courtyard. An outside that she'd only gotten brief glimpses of for much of her life, stuck in here as she was. A medical interest, and unable to be much else.

"You're a bit off, by the way. You should have checked my records! Storing and generating magical energy is something I can't ever do. My disease eats mana, Doctor. And it's always, always, hungry."
in the end we will make thoughtcrime impossible, for there shall be no words to express it

Four screens lay on the counter, angled up on the register so as to be out of view of the customers as she taps the screens intermittently. Amber eyes flicker between them as one sequence finishes. A flick and that program closes before she opens another on the phone, repeating the process again a moment later on the second device.

Progress was within acceptable limits so far today, an easy estimate placed her at finishing the necessary grinding before the close of the shop this evening with a small margin of error based on the current customers.

"Your audio sensors reach far enough to hear that?"
"Three instances of non magical, unexplained sounds in the previous 14 days."

Nova summarizes succinctly, not bothering to look away from the screens of her phones. High quality sound sensors easily picking up the radio, as well as the young customers disparaging remarks. She doesn't pause her tappings away at her multiple games, but does look up at this. Artificial eyes refocusing on the customers, not even needing to run the numbers on her employer's response. Perhaps if she acts quickly enough she can still complete the sale.

"191,560.64." Nova states the total at a glance of the stack of books, reaching towards the card.

Too slow apparently as Angela has already decided that the two were no longer customers.

    Her gacha funds.

    "This is not ideal."

However she doesn't take any further action, instead looking back down at her phones and returning to her games. After all, there were no longer customers in the store any more, so Angela couldn't complain further.

Recalculations must be made with the limiting of expected resources.

One of her favorite pastimes was to create stories about people going about their lives in the street. Sometimes, she saw a pair talking in the distance, and she would pretend they were lovers having a quarrel… Sometimes, when an old fed pigeons in the park, she would pretend they were talking about their ungrateful sons… A group of teenagers would be speaking about their boring parents… A woman walking by herself thought longingly about her partner, far away on a business trip…

It helped her to pass time. She would only go back home—or rather, to that house, which was never a home anyway—when it was really time. It was a good thing she had no friends, because if she did, they would hate her… She would find every available excuse to hang out in their houses… So, she would wander aimlessly, because that’s her life, an aimless journey with no end in sight. But it was fine. It could be worse.

How weird it was that today, though, she didn’t need to resort to her imagination to have a distraction… A small woman was being harassed by a bunch of men, during daylight!

Prim wasn’t a model citizen—she would probably just stand up and leave the bench, finding another peaceful spot to resume her aimless existence, truly. If pressed enough, she could even call the authorities, yes, but… She’d rather not bother anyone… However, those were not options, not when the girl called for her, with fear in her eyes (or so it seemed to Prim), clearly asking for help. And clearly making everyone pay attention to her.

A young woman with bright hair. Prim used to have long hair like hers—no, longer even—but she would only grow it out in order to sell later… It would be a shame if she was hurt, she was such a pretty girl. Leaving the place where she was sitting, Prim looked uncertain at that upsetting situation, her head spinning until it landed on a distant memory, an overheard conversation about strangers helping strangers.

The blonde had read about stuff like this, in the same way one would read about what to do when an alligator attacks you, or when you’re trapped in a snowstorm… Useless tidbits of knowledge you never know you retained in your brain, until one day it suddenly comes back to you. She had to try at least, right? She couldn’t just run away now, right? So, despite her shaking, and knowing full well that their attention was all on her now, unable to just pretend she has nothing to do with the situation, the girl goes against every survival instinct in her body as she approaches those men.

“Elise!” She exclaims, forcing a smile that seemed more strained than bright. “What are you doing, silly? Talking as if you don’t know me… Quit joking around! Let’s go, or else we’re gonna be late.”

She takes the blonde’s hand, gripping it with all of her strength, which was none. And quickly takes a step to the direction from where she comes from, hand in hand with this stranger. “U-umm, well… See you guys later, you guys, me and my friend, we’re taking our leave now. Nice to meet you…!”

Plenty of strange humans crawl into this shop asking all sorts of things, but for the first time he found a guest that could give the old detective pause. The curious nature of his guests can sometimes be payment itself but compared to this strange figure they were all boringly common. Indeed, it took a minute to properly digest a presence that filled the entire room. Still even as he calmed itself he never felt like he truly understood what he was looking at.

He wasn’t entirely sure what to make of the peculiar creature but his heart in all its infinite wisdom knew how to act when feeble mortal minds could not.

“Esteemed customer! Welcome! Just make yourself at home.”

He was quick to welcome her to his office, throwing the creaky door open with excessive force and ushering her inside as he followed closely behind. Casually he jumped into his little rolling chair, spinning around in it as he pulled himself up to the decrepit fancy desk he fished out of the dump. He really did not get tired of this world's funky little inventions. What sort of ingenious scholar could have come up with a spinning chair? These were fascinating times he lived in.

Finally settling himself he let her speak. Regardless of the unnerving oddness of the woman and her request he listened silently and intensely on every word. Despite everything she said being absurd he nodded along as if all was normal because he considered it polite.

Her eyes seemingly studying yours, “The last is the headquarters of the international conglomerate specializing in cutting edge arcane research and history: Metis.”

Such an absurd request from an odd being could only be something of the utmost importance. As a man of faith he could recognize a holy star when he saw one. Indeed, this guest might be properly special, a sign from the heavens, a lead towards everything his existence was designed to pursue. This woman carried the nostalgic vibe of God.

A holy aura and deific presence didn’t inherently prove a connection to what he hoped for, no need to jump to conclusions, but it was a mark of significance that must be grasped. If it was some other unrelated force of the cosmos then he just had another job, but if reality has bent to feed his aspirations then this should become everyone's new dedication. Yes, it was all just part of the master plan that he was currently writing now at this very moment. For now he decided to take his chances and take it as a sign of the coming inevitable past that such an angel would visit him on this day.

“I’m unworried about payment, I’m sure you can provide more than enough of what I desire. Rather the concern is um, how do I say this…..”

Lyle drummed his fingers on the table as carefully worded his response.

“You want me to do what now? Most requests come with a greater level of specifics such as: What I am looking for or what do you hope for me to find. Most of my cases have been urban legends so the target tends to be clear. Any information you can provide would be most useful.”

Many others would be intimidated by such an absurd request but Lyle was a man of faith. Miracle work was his purpose at heart, impossible odds are all part of the job.

“Everything else you need not worry about ma’am!”

With that Lyle gives the angel woman a salute.

Of all things to hear first thing in the morning, getting let go was not high on the woman’s list. Scratch that, it wasn’t on the woman’s list at all. Killing a manticore was on the list. Dealing with another outbreak of Known History-eating gremlins was on the list. Hell, picking up coffee for the office during the morning rush was on the list. Would she have to walk to the nearest store, ask for the manager, and give him a firm handshake and a printed resumé? According to what she heard second thing in the morning, apparently not. She’d been reassigned… somewhere… to a new job with very strict punctuality requirements. And also lots of paperwork. Was the paperwork from before not enough? Was this what life was After Loss? An eternity of forms, forms, and more forms?

Two mind-numbing hours later, the woman entered an unfamiliar office that was infinitely more interesting. Are those katanas!? Folded-over-one-million-times katanas!? Could-slice-through-that-desk-like-butter katanas!? I WANNA SWING ONE!

“Thanks! It’s been pretty busy, and all of that paperwork…” The woman sighs as she sinks into the nearest offered chair, crossing her legs. “Yes, please!” she answers immediately to the prospect of employment’s nectar. “Do you have any half-and-half? And turbinado sugar?” She shifts her gaze to the older man in the room, still staring at her with displeasure. He decides to talk, approaching her to offer a handshake.

"What the hell are you talking about," The twenty year old woman looks at you with a look of bewilderment and disgust, "Do you even hear the words that are coming out of your mouth? Do you think you sound cool, old man?"

On the other end of the table, Charles leans forward in his chair. Fingers interlaced. Eyes locked with yours.

"Look, Oliver, I get it. This is a lot of dough. Like seriously a lot of fine cheddar. Take even a small cut of this and you could run away to a nice island in the tropics and eat good for the rest of ya life. But listen, man... It's just too damn dangerous. And you're out of your goddamn mind if you think I'm going to send my boy off to die in the gutter like some damn dog. You're more than some two-bit foot soldier. You're my brother, man."

Charles's expression grows even more intense. He's serious. And he's about to walk away from a serious payday over a little loss of nerve.

Jess, on the other hand, is still fixated on the money. Recounting it here and there while giving you and Oliver odd looks. Even gagging at the boss's little display of brotherly affection just now. Shame the girl will never understand what the two of you have shared over the years.

"If you guys start making out, I'm leaving. If I have to watch two dudes make out, they've got to at least be moderately attractive."

These words push Charles over the edge. In a fit of rage, he brings his fist down on the table. Hard. In doing so, he shatters a nice glass ashtray that just so happened to be sitting there- sending little shards of glass flying in every direction. Now there's blood and ash all over the one nice table in this whole joint.

"Dammit, Jess! Will you take this seriously!?," Charles growls at the young recruit. Eyes practically bulging out of his head, "In case it wasn't obvious, this is clearly a setup! There's no questioning it! If ya think whoever is involved in all this is gonna let some nobodies like us walk away with this much money for such a simple job-!" Charles catches his breath. Probably realizing that he's losing his cool. He's only able to calm himself down so much though, "Then you're even more hard-headed than I thought."

Jess doesn't say anything in response. Contrary to Charles, she only seems to grow calmer as the situation develops. Staring the boss dead in the eye in silent defiance.

Charles sees this. It's clear as day. But he's smart enough to know that getting into a pissing contest with his subordinate will just make him lose even more face.

"Listen... Just give me some time to think things over. We'd be stupid to take this job. And we'd also be stupid to walk away from the money. But maybe it's best to quit while we're ahead and make off with what we've got here. Though I doubt our friends will make life that easy for us if they're tossin' around this kind of money... There's gotta be some kind of way for us to come out on top of this.

There's a brief silence as Charles pauses to think.

"...Hate to admit it, but I may even have to ask Emilio's gang for help on this. Let him know some shady cat is doing some serious business on his turf..."

Without a word, Jess reaches over the table and grabs the money case by the handle. Charles- almost immediately- reaches over the table and grabs her hand.

"The fuck are ya doin', Jess? I said we ain't takin' the job."

The boss's temper is starting to flare up again. His eyes lock in on Jessie and her eyes slowly rise to meet his.

"It's a simple job," Jess states with cold hostility, "We drop off the package and make some quick money. Good money. And last I checked, that's the only reason I'm tagging along with you losers."

    "And I'm telling you-!"

"You're telling us that it's too dangerous a gig because you're scared," Jess cuts the boss off with unwavering calm, "But to my understanding, Charles, your job is even easier than ours. After all, you're powerless. Right? All you have to do is give us the order while Oliver and I go out there and do all the heavy lifting... All you do is sit on your ass and wait for us to bring you back your cut... Honestly, if you ask me, it seems like you're really unnecessary. But if you're nice, I may let you have enough money to go buy a pair once all this is said and done."

Eyes locked in a heated struggle, neither budges. Both hands firmly gripping your advance payment.

Your approach is- surprisingly- unhindered. After answered the blonde's call, you approach the situation with false confidence and caution.

Your steps are measured. You stroll right past the first guy who was approaching you. Then walk right up to the other two. And, finally, you reach past them and takes the blonde's hand in yours. Not a single person lifts a finger to stop you. Everyone just watches the situation unfold with a dumbstruck look on their faces. Even the damsel in distress. Perhaps they bought into your little performance? Or maybe they're just taken aback by your blatant disregard of the mood. Regardless, even as you pull the blonde along with you, there is no protest as you remove the two of you from the situation.

    "H-Hey... Who's Elise?"

Just three words. Three little words and your heart skips a beat.

The mystery girl asks this of you, totally oblivious of how you're sticking your neck out for her. She doesn't even try to hide her confusion. And there's no way her voice was quiet enough for the other three not to hear... Your cover is blown. You don't even want to turn around and see the look of realization on the three men's faces.

    "..."

And yet... nothing happens. No angry voices. No one reaching out to grab you. Nothing...

After a very brief moment of hesitation, you tug on the girl's arm once more and continue walking in the direction you came from. Again, you don't look back. However, after you've created a sizeable distance, you can hear the boys talking behind you.

    "What just happened?"

"Man! I told you we should have just paid for her. No chick's gonna hang with us if we open with splitting the bill!"

They're clearly agitated. So you instinctively hasten your steps and- soon enough- break out into a full-blown sprint. You don't want to give them any chance to catch up to you.

    ***

After two minutes of continuous running, you managed to find a nice park bench to collapse on and catch your breath. Mystery girl on the other hand... Despite having kept pace with you this whole time- with a camping pack on no less- doesn't even seem to have broken a sweat. Instead of joining you on the bench, she remains standing and offers you a bottle of water.

"Hey, thanks for helping me back out there," Her tone has a certain cheeriness to it. Hard to believe this girl was in any kind of trouble minutes ago, "You really saved my skin, you know. Those guys just had a real creepy vibe to them. Ya know what I mean?"

Before you can get a word in, the takes a hold of your hand and forces the water into your possession. Then, with a smile, she blops down on the bench and scoots ever so closer to you.

"Name's Rebecca. Rebecca Shore. But my friends just call me Becca," She scoots in even closer, "Let me make it up to ya, okay? What do ya want? A smoothie? Lunch? A cute outfit? I may not lot it, but I'm good for funds. Just don't ask me to treat you to a five-star cuisine or anything."

Having made her offer, Rebecca leans back and tilts her head to the side. A thought seemingly having just crossed her mind.

"Oh wait... I'm supposed to be waiting for my friend..." A look of contemplation interrupts her abrasive cheer. Though she quickly shakes this off and turns her attention back to you, "Oh well. I'm sure she'll understand. You did save me, after all."

I rolled my eyes, sitting up.

"Fine, let's say it's a set-up, who the fuck would set up a couple of losers and some shitty teenager who breastfed too long?"

    I say, like I don't suspect.

"Let's put it all out on the table here," I said, speaking plainly, "If people with this much to put together want to set us up, they're going to get their way, like it or not. What, next they get tired of messing around and just send some of the other schmucks around to go make a raid on us?"

I waved a hand around, "All it takes is a nice molly through the window and this is all gone anyway. People with money like that got power, and we don't, so they can do whatever they want. That's how the world works."

"Chuckers, I get the caution, this is a big deal, it's rational to have doubts and worries, hell, I've certainly got them right now. People don't throw money out the door for nothing, either whatever we're carrying is hotter'n hades, or they're not interested in the cargo. Still, scurryin' away and going to tell people who maybe won't be so cautious, won't be as amiable or friendly as the three amigos right here..."

I scratched at my face, "Well, it sounds like a real pain in the ass."

I paused, "And I am kind of interested in the kind of idiot who'd just give all this cash out in advance. Who's to say we're even the only idiots who are going to show up, ah? Put us all in a giant death pit and fight it out for the cash prize."

I nodded idly, "Sounds a bit more like what someone with that much would do."

Gasping for air, at first the blonde barely registered a water bottle in front of her, still trying to keep her lunch where it should stay, inside of her, with all this commotion. When she opened her eyes again, and saw that beautiful creature offering that beautiful object though—oh, how thankful she felt! Without even asking for permission, she gulped almost the whole thing. Running from perverts was always this taxing...?

And how come this stranger was so nonchalant about the whole thing? She blew their cover as if it was no big deal…! Prim was still so shocked to find someone who was even more of an airhead than she was.

“T…Thank you. I feel better now.” She introduces herself as Becca, sitting down with her, and the girl couldn’t help but smile for a moment, in a mix of relief and solidarity. Well… Although still scared, there was something good about having saved someone… She had no hopes for things to work out so well in the end… “It’s a pleasure, Becca. I’m Primrose, but you can also call me Prim.”

Do you think she would remember this weird little girl who saved her from a situation that wasn’t even scary in her eyes, as much as Prim would remember that, once, she was useful to a total stranger? Huh… It’s a shame that thinking about useless things like that didn’t prepare her for a lavish display of generosity, courtesy of this same stranger. Prim wasn’t even drinking water anymore and still managed to choke on something.

“N-no… I… I-I couldn’t possibly ask for you to waste your money on me, please!” She shakes her head vigorously, almost jumping from her seat. The mere perspective of someone being nice was enough to send her into a spiral. “Just knowing you’re safe it’s already enough, really! Thank you for your offer!” She stops herself, lowering the hands that were gesturing for their life until now. “Then again… Um, if I could give you a suggestion, take this money and buy a great bath salt, and soak in the water for hours tonight. I know I’ll try to do that myself after this whole situation…” Of course she wouldn’t, as if the people who lived with her would even allow her such luxury. But a girl could vicariously live through someone else, right?

However, those happy thoughts were quickly interrupted by the mention of a third party. Miss Becca was supposed to wait for someone else? In this dangerous place? How horrible! If it was a lady as well, then she could very much be disturbed by those same no-doers.

“Umm… It isn’t very safe to be by yourself here… Y-your friend could be accosted by those men too, if you two decided to meet somewhere around here.” She started. Becca herself didn’t seem so preoccupied about her own friend—with anything, really—so, should she be saying any of this then? “Ah! But, if you’re fine with this, allow me to keep you company! We can just… Lay low, I guess? And wait for her to appear anywhere... It’s not like they’ll search for us or anything? Right…?”

    That would be a problem.

The twin-tailed girl closes her eyes and smiles- nodding softly to herself. She looks quite satisfied, though you can't ascertain exactly why.

"Of course. Though it may take some time to relay to you all the information I have. So why don't we go over the points of interest one at a time."

A perfectly reasonable train of thought. If you are to do your job well, it's a good idea to go over a much information as possible. Towa stated earlier that she wanted to get to the point; however, she doesn't come across as particularly rushed either. You had your suspicions before, but - if you read between the lines a bit- now you're almost certain that she intends for this to be a long-term assignment. It may be a good idea to carefully consider the information she has to offer and raise any questions you may have.

"Lets start with the library, shall we?"

Towa relaxes in her seat, following your example by slowly spinning around.

"As I stated before, Akasha is a grand library located at the center of this city's historical district. It's around 78,000 meters squared on the map, but in actually it's much larger than this. It's likely that the interior is enchanted. Apparently the library was designed with the intention of housing at least one copy of every public text throughout human history. But I'll return to this later. Carrying on, not only is the library home to several different literary works, but it also serves as an archive for accumulated Known History as well as a civilian database utilized by nations all across the world. In a way, you can say it's more like a museum than a library. Books, art, paintings, ancient tools, and all sorts of publicly available records... All housed under one roof. Truly, if you stop to consider things, it's a fount of information that would be cataclysmic if it fell into the wrong hands. And yet it hasn't..."

As Towa starts to trail off in her own thoughts, you catch her glancing at you. A coy smirk flashes on her face.

"You'll have to forgive me. I tend to ramble when discussing things of interest to me."

While you don't feel that statement is necessarily a lie, you do feel none of her words just now were unintentional. And the "sorry" look on her face communicates Towa knows you're aware of this.

"Getting back on topic, I want you to investigate a certain rumor that's been circulating about the library. Though I suppose that will require a bit of background as well."

Towa stops her spinning and turns her chair to face you. She brings her legs up into the seat- sitting cross-legged- and looks you straight in the eye once more. As her eyes begin to examine your every move, you feel a certain sense of wonder slowly rising within them.

"I said it earlier, but the interior of the library is likely enchanted. Though, I don't believe it's necessarily through arcane powers."

These words give you pause, but Towa doesn't so much as flinch. She simply continues on as if that statement doesn't warrant explanation.

"The space inside the library is transcendental. Warped, even. It's much bigger and much wider on the inside than public record would have you believe. A number of citizens have reported wondering around the library to see all that it has to offer. With it being as big as it is, I'm sure you can see certain people deciding to kill a day like this. However, it gets a bit more interesting. You see, the accounts of these citizens I'm referring to all end up with them getting lost among the books. Sure, the library may be big; however, it's not so big that a competent person couldn't merely retrace their steps to end up where they came from. And that's just the thing. Every single one of these accounts details ending up in a completely different place upon going back the way they came. Unfamiliar rooms. Different layouts. A complete change in architecture... One person even says it was like they crossed into an entirely different world at one point."

Towa's face briefly twists into a wicked- almost sinister- looking smile. Going by her actions so far, you want to believe it was no mistake that the girl showed you such a face. But, within a second, she's back to her regular expression of gentle confidence. It happens so fast that you almost want to doubt it even happened. If you'd blinked even a fraction of a second sooner, you would have missed it...

"And that finally brings me to my request for the library," Towa closes her eyes and bows her head, "There's another part to these different accounts. A common thread, if you will. You see, when these people became lost... Trapped withing an ever-deepening labyrinth of books, they all recounted seeing the figure of a person. Always out of the corner of their vision. Never getting a direct line of sight... And this figure would stalk them for hours on in, steadily getting closer as they retreated deeper into the library. And then, when the figure finally got close enough for breath to be felt on the back of the neck..."

Towa suddenly claps her hands, filling the room with a burst of noise.

"Every single person found themselves withing view of the library's main entrance. Outside the building."

Towa lowers her hands back into her lap. A long bout of explanation finally having come to an end. A brief period of silence follows.

Eventually, Towa raises her head and opens her eyes again.

"For the library, I want you to investigate this rumored figure and report back to me what you find. That is all."

What a strange thing a library is. An endless sea of knowledge for the public that dwarfed the big pit he stored his own books in, it was truly a marvelous concept. He had always wanted to visit and harness the power of a library for himself. In fact, he should take the time to read something if he’s going there. Indeed, efficiency is the best policy, no need for multiple visits if he can find the time. Though the entirety of all written human knowledge sounds like a lot for one trip even if you are very intelligent like him. Maybe two trips should be considered. Depends on the ability to stay overnight.

No, that’s too irresponsible he thought. The dream of potentially living for weeks on end in the library must be put to the side for the sake of this potentially holy mission. Analyzing all this information now requires his full attention. The investigation begins the first moment a word is spoken. The woman's speech and expressions tell their own story about her request. There’s a seemingly calculated nature to all her actions and words beneath the casual guise which attempts to guide this conversation down a certain path. Any manipulation hides unsaid intention. As far as Lyle is concerned it’s a kind of lying, not that he particularly resents the concept. The wonder in her eyes seems true at the very least. It is simply something to consider…..

Lyle could take all sorts of information in a causal and whimsical manner, but the heart of the mystery should always be pursued with great seriousness. It’s not just his job but the fact that it triggers his natural curiosity warrants full attention. Indeed, he must act in the image of God.

The rumor currently presented remains suitably mysterious for Lyle’s regular work. Something inherently supernatural is described but with enough vagueness that at least some of it could simply be a result of weak human perception, though his gut tells him this case shall not be so simple this time around.

Considering it can supposedly last for hours then much preparation must be made to appropriately spend that time. With the changing scenery perhaps it will be appropriate you get a camera to record the evidence. Similarly, as it’s a Library perhaps borrowing a book from the warped area may provide further information. Though, he should see if someone has beaten him to such a thing in the preparatory stages.

Based on the wording of her account it sounds as if this phenomenon only occurs to people who are alone, another point of interest to look into if he wishes to experience it himself. There’s also her statement about the library being warped. Considering this library sounds quite important, simply learning when these rumors started might prove to be valuable insight into the phenomenon and nature of the location. Then of course, there’s the nature of her making that statement at all.

The most important part of all this is how the library connects to her other two requests and why she is making them, but Lyle will simply have to wait for those.

“I see, I see. A mysterious being like this seems simple enough to investigate. However, a few more questions about the Library if you might indulge me. Do you know of anybody who has experienced the phenomenon? When did these rumors start appearing? And of course, what do you mean about the library being enchanted without Arcane?”

"Well... Lets just say I have a little job that needs some doing. One where your skills might just come in handy," Elynah smiles as she walks over to the side of the room- swirling her coffee, "Plus, I don't exactly trust my little lackey here to be delicate enough to do it on his own."

A slight grumble escapes Johnathan, but the boss's jab doesn't warrant more of a reaction. This level of back and forth is probably normal for them. Despite their work relation, they must be somewhat close.

Elynah returns to her personal little coffee bar and starts to rummage through its contents. Meanwhile, Johnathan leans against her desk. Ever since you introduced yourself, he's been silently pondering to himself. It's honestly a bit worrying. Troubling even... Especially considering her hasn't taken his eyes off you this whole time.

"Now I remember," Even when speaking calmly, the senior officer's voice holds a certain weight to it. Deep and commanding, yet laidback, "Fairlark Icecomplex- rescued by some harbor workers a little over a year ago. Age 24 at the time, you were discovered inside of a strange pod dated several decades ago. It was later discovered that you had amnesia. And, because of the unique situation surrounding you at the time, you were handed over to the government for questioning. But, because you barely even knew who you were, they had no choice but to release you. Although, if memory serves correct, you somehow ended up being their lapdog. A glorified treasure hunter specializing in the recovery of Known History."

    Dead on. Frighteningly so.

"Until yours truly, pulled some strings and got her transferred to the SCF."

Working her way back into the conversation, Elynah approaches the table with half-and-half, turbinado sugar, and a small bottle of bourbon whiskey. She sets the sugar and half-and-half in front of you but moves over to the opposite seat with the whiskey in hand.

"Louis said it himself, but he's a part of the Special Training and Tactics Squadron. STATS, for short," Making herself comfortable on the couch, Elynah pours a shot of whiskey into her coffee, "Publicly they're the part of the police force that specializes in suppressing high-level matters involving arcane individuals."

"But what we really are is a bunch of hired guns sent out by the man to take care of people with enough power to threaten the fragile order. Government backed assassins, sent out to handle our own kind."

A sigh and a troubled look. Breaking eye contact with you, Johnathan reaches into his pocket and fishes out a pack of cigarettes.

"Your name came across my desk back then. That's why I know so much about you. Small world..."

The male officer shoots the boss an inquisitive look, but she only responds by smiling. That and pointing at his pack of smokes before gesturing that she'll lop off his head. To this, Johnathan only grumbles and resigns himself to his defeat once more.

"Anyway, getting back to business," Elynah gulps down her coffee and sets the cup down on the table, "I'm assigning the two of you to a new human trafficking case centered here in this city. Recently, we busted a small black market auction that was specifically selling young arcane users. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to figure out where the main operation is taking place. However, we did find something interesting out. That being that no actual money was being traded for these kinds. Instead, they were being purchased with stolen artifacts, illegally acquired art, and even historical documents that were reported missing as far as nine months ago. In other words, they were buying up these kids with Known History."

Elynah pours some more whiskey into her mug as she lets her words sink in. Johnathan remains quit, but it's clear that he's already got a few thoughts going. He's already staring off into space- rhythmically tapping his unopened cigarettes.

"Oh. And in case you're still wondering how I got you assigned here," Elynah smiles mischievously as she sips on her bourbon, "Lets just say... I'm doing your old boss a favor by not telling the brass about where I found some of the artifacts he failed to report as missing."

"So...," Johnathan speaks up, but hesitates briefly before finishing his thought, "You blackmailed him..."

"Please, Louis. It's not like I'm holding it over his head or anything. I already got what I wanted, after all."

Elynah smiles innocently. You already know better than to trust her at face value. Though she has the body of a young teen, there might just be an evil monster lurking underneath.

"I'm counting on you, my dear little Fairylark~"

The woman sitting on her desk without a care in the world swirls her drink and aims a gleefully feline grin at Fairylark, like a cat that’s just gotten its paws on a particularly delectable bird. Fairylark, for her part, sighs into her half-empty mug of coffee. She takes a slightly-too-sweet sip before turning her head to look at the disquieted officer.

“You know, being a Record Finder was fun. I saw new things and learned new things. You said you’ve done this for 12 years; is your job interesting? Do you learn?” Fairylark takes another sip to wash away some of her pique. “Guess I can’t complain too much about eventfulness though. Known History and arcanes definitely lead to novel experiences. But trading one for the other through human trafficking?” She meets Elynah’s eyes. “That is a pretty awful thing.”

With that, Fairylark downs the rest of her coffee. She sets her mug on the table, leans back, laces her fingers, and asks a question without a drop of guile. “So if I’m a government assassin now, do I get a number? Like 007?”
