Synopsis

SHOW After the Alien God assaulted the Wandering Sea... Having only escaped after making many sacrifices, Chaldea sets out to enter the Seventh Lostbelt in order to put an end to the plans of the high-and-mighty god who sees itself as the Ruler of Earth. In the South American Amazon rainforests... This place was the cradle of this planet's life, it's fertile lands and thickets of trees nurturing numerous upon numerous of life-forms. Now, bearing the Roots of Fantasy within, it has completely transformed into a land of death, its lands having dried up, while thick thunderclouds close off the skies above. For what reason did the environment become like this? Just what happened in history here? Chaldea find themselves in the South American Lostbelt, its environment having become cruel, rejecting all life. There, they confront the sole life in which the Human Order still breathes.

So this is probably the chapter where all the shoes are going to drop, but I thought it would be interesting to have a quick look at the title:

So "Nahui" in Nahuatl means "Sun." While it has the obvious connotation of that great big ball of flaming gas, it has another layer of meaning in Nahua mythology, where the mythological epochs are delineated by a succession of Suns. You have Nahui-Ocelotl (the Jaguar Sun), Nahui Ehecatl (the Wind Sun), Nahui Quiahuitl (the Rain Sun), Nahui Atl (the Water Sun) and now, the Nahui Ollin (the Earthquake Sun.) Each is named after the force that eventually ended the world after the collapse of the sun.
Tezcatlipoca commanded his jaguars to eat everything on the surface after the collapse of the First Sun.
Tezcatlipoca turned all of humanity into monkeys during the reign of the Second Sun, and Quetzalcoatl was so furious he blew them all away with a hurricane, ending the Second Sun.
The Third Sun was destroyed when humanity kept petitioning Tlaloc (the Third Sun and god of rain) for water after Tezcatlipoca stole his wife and he became so annoyed with their inconsiderate prayers that he made it rain fire.
Tezcatlipoca made the Fourth Sun cry so much blood the world was destroyed and humans had to become fish to survive, so Quetzalcoatl decided to have one (1) more go.

The Fifth Sun (hello, this is us) was created by from Huitzilopochtli, the god of war, and was populated when Quetzalcoatl ventured into the Underworld (Mictlan) to recover the bones of those who had died during the reign of the Fourth Sun to make a new humanity. Initially, the ruler of the Underworld (Mictlantecuhtli) agreed, but reneged on his agreement, and Quetzalcoatl had to escape with what bones he had collected, leaving some behind. He dipped the bones he recovered in his own blood to create new humans for this new world. Meanwhile, the stars are now trying to eat the Sun, who has to fight them off every night alongside the other gods, who require blood in order to sustain themselves and the universe, hence the explanation for the human sacrifices performed by the Aztec empires. If these sacrifices ever stop, or the gods weaken for another reason, the stars will devour the Sun and the world will be destroyed in a massive earthquake.

So Nahui Mictlan roughly means "Underworld Sun," and I can see it being one of two things:

1) Something went awry with Quetzalcoatl's venture into Mictlan (if we take these myths at somewhat 'face value' for the relevant texture) and the current state of the South American Lostbelt reflects a world where either the Fifth Sun died and the gods got desperate, or maybe the Fifth Sun was made from the sacrifice of a different god, and there's a conflict going on between the living and the dead rather than a conflict between the stars and the Sun.
2) "Mictlantecuhtli," a deity associated with (among other animals) spiders, is ORT, and the story of the Fourth Sun is a less-literal rendition of a conflict in the past that, in our timeline, didn't result in it waking up, but may have resulted in a different outcome in the Lostbelt.

Either way it explains Itzpapalotl being grafted onto Douman - Itzpapalotl is a goddess who leads the Tzitzimimeh (the gods that make up the stars and try to eat the Sun every night), so it fits with the idea that the Apostles were surgically created to perform specific roles within the Lostbelts.

I think the issue is that the location of the lostbelt would make one think that this should be Inca territory (at least partly), but this lostbelt is shaping up to be Aztec instead for some reason that doesn't make sense geographically.
